Got a letter in the post asking me to make pension payments for past years when I was a student. What's the deal with this? I understand paying will entitle me to a higher pension in the future (disregarding the fact I'm not Japanese), but I figure since I was a student (and not actually in Japan most of the time), I shouldn't have to pay this.

The payments date back to the year I came to Japan as an international student up until I came to Japan to begin full-time work in 2009 (when I began having pension payments deducted from my regular salary).

Anyone with similar experience?

I'm seeing the word 'trope' everywhere at the moment. Looks like it was a buzzword not so long ago too: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/mind-your-language/2011/sep/29/mind-your-language-buzzword-trope

Original meaning for trope was a 'figure of speech' - a non-literal expression such as a metaphor used to describe something else. E.g. 'I'm saving for a rainy day'. (I.e. Saving for a time of financial need).

These days though I'm seeing it being used for just about everything, doubling as a synonym for 'cliche', 'theme' or 'image' among others.

Whoah. Just momentarily blacked out - twice - after getting out the bath. Both times I felt as though a thousand thoughts and memories were rushing through my head in a dreamlike state. After I woke up I was honestly confused at what had happened. Had dizziness and temporary vision loss after getting up quickly before, but never actually blacked out. That was weird indeed.
