Inspired by +Lauren Weinstein and +Sai's posts on Google+'s poor handling of long text posts, I've updated +Replies and More to auto-expand text posts.
This will automatically click the "Read More" link, and hide the "Show Less" link. Since +Replies and More is opinionated software, I've turned this on by default.

Well.... this is different.
Two functional problems preventing me from enjoying the new layout (ignoring completely aesthetic things, which while being new and strange I could theoretically get used to):
1) The third column runs straight off the side of the screen. Very unfortunate for the people whose posts appear in that column, as I can't see their entire posts. There is enough gray space on the left side of the screen to push everything over just enough for it all to work, but that's not happening.
2) Where is the Chat function now? Not hangouts, chat. I can't find it.
3) No more autorefresh on the main stream?
The last time G+ made a big change like this, we all complained, but we all adapted. I assume that will happen this time as well. But last time, a number of people decided to quit right then and there, and G+ lost a number of g... more »

My first post here. This is a lantern bug, Fulgora candelaria I believe. Very photogenic but quite common in Hong Kong where there are lychee or longan trees. Shot with a 5D3 and 180mm F3.5 lens +1.4x TC. ISO 1250, F16, 1/10s, tripod and cable release. I also shot this one stacked to clean the background a little more.
I am retired, a totally amateur self-taught photographer with a love of natural history. You will also see photos of birds in my albums.

!!!
So, if you guys remember that excellent portrait that +Mary C. drew for me on my birthday ( http://goo.gl/Nxct1 ),you may recall the fine detail that was the squidward mug... I think I even commented something along the lines of "if only I had such a mug in real life!"
Well, look what arrived in the mail today o.o
And not just any squidward mug, but a Mary C. original artwork squidward mug!
My life is now complete.
And I have the strange desire to take a selfy now recreating the scene depicted in that artwork now that I have the final piece to that puzzle.
To Mary and anyone else responsible, huge thanks!
(I know the pic is bad and I still owe you guys ladybugs, but I wanted to get a rough pic up for the time being because I'm too excited)

Sooo last week during my birthday onslaught +Dirk Reul mentioned something about how soon I would "meet the beetles." I didn't really know what he was referring to, but I got a package earlier and never in a million years would I have expected actual live beetles! Hahaha! So, for everyone responsible (I'm not sure who yet, but I think +Kyla Myers was also involved), many thanks for the ladybugs :D You guys are crazy ^^
I have no pictures yet. Wanted to make a post first. But expect pics soon :)

Dear +Google+ and +Google+ Help
Please stop hiding people's posts from me as well as hiding my posts from everyone else.
I have in the last several weeks noticed that many posts from people I have circled do not show up in my circle streams. This is not about my "All" stream but rather the dedicated circle streams where every single post from everyone in these specific circles should show up. This is not happening; not at all.
Today alone I have received several messages from friends who are telling me that my posts are not showing up in their streams. Even my friends who have me in "always notify" circles do not see many of my posts in their streams nor receive notifications of my posts.
This might seem like a pity issue to some, but I truly care about many people here on Google+ and I hate to miss out on the content, stories, and tho... more »

Mayfly
A closer shot showing this insect in all its glory.
For those unfamiliar with mayflies, they are short-lived aquatic insects that spend the majority of their lives underwater. Once they have matured, they climb out of the water and molt into their winged adult forms, in which they will only live for a short amount of time (at most, a few days, with some species only lasting a few hours), where their primary objective is to find a mate.

Mayflies ... mayflies everywhere
There seriously must have been millions of these guys... well, it is May, after all. I wanted to try to get a photo of the swarm but really, this photo doesn't show the half of it.
I love mayflies... though, I can't say that I love picking them off of my clothes/hair/skin quite as much...

Why oh why fly, why?
Buzzing merrily round me
Let me be gloomy
A little portrait of The Bug Guy from California as he sits all gloomy like most poets, trying to think a new indecipherable code of words that only the insanely brilliant (like himself) will understand. :P
Happy BUGSday +Chris Mallory! Hope you have a great one!! :D

After all this #BugsDay stuff I feel like I owe you guys a bug, since I haven't posted one in so long :)
Instead, here is some sort of... something ... that some creative kids (or possibly extraterrestrials) built on the beach one day. If you squint really hard, it almost looks like a bug.

What a day! I think I am finally finished with my notification backlog ! I think I've thanked all of you individually, so I won't do that again here. And half of me wants to share 10+ posts that I really loved, but, I think for now, I am Chris Mallory'd out and I'm sure some of you guys are too! I'm definitely not used to being the center of attention. So, for the rest of the night, let's not make it about me. Let's make it about you guys instead. Everyone have a good day? What's been going on in your lives?

o.o! Can't remember the last time I had this many notifications. Well, I mean, I can, but that's besides the point. Thanks everyone for the messages :) I dunno how long it'll take me to get through all of them, I'll probably only be able to get through a couple this morning, but I will get around to all of them... you know... eventually... I hope o.o

Elegant Terns
A small colony of Elegant Terns (Sterna elegans). This is a somewhat larger tern that winters in South America but migrates to Southern Californa/Northern Mexico estuaries to breed. There are only 5 known active colonies: 90% of the population breed in the Isla Rosa in the Gulf of California, with smaller colonies in San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles Harbor in California.

California Least Tern
The smallest tern in North America, this is an endangered migratory species that nests in several places along the California coastline from April-June. This photo is from last year, but I thought it'd be appropriate to share considering that it's nesting season once again. Locally, several beaches have areas fenced off to protect the nesting sites of these great birds, and if you happen to run into one do try not to disturb them since they nest directly on the beaches and as such their eggs can be easily missed. Successful conservation efforts have seen the total population of these birds increase from under six hundred individuals in 1973 to over seven thousand in 2005.

I think oftentimes its easier to discern what's going on in a person's head based on what music they're currently in love with, rather than through what they are willing to tell you.

SLUG SEX
A comment in my snail post last night mentioned that snails reproduce asexually. This is not necessarily true! Actually, snails (and slugs) both enjoy getting it on just as much as you or me. And oftentimes, it is a truly magical affair.
If you have never watched this before, it's an absolute must see. Trust me.

Regarding
+Natalie Villalobos ' post about community invite tips: https://plus.google.com/u/0/107150983484568200135/posts/NfWaaYyYQLA
This seriously doesn't help at all... it just makes us more closed off to those not in our circles... Especially in communities.
As a community owner I make sure that anyone can notify me so when I am away from my computer I can quickly act. Harassment is a very common occurrence in anything identifying as Women or Girl.
I'm obviously a very small voice in all of this, but I really truly feel like the last few months has been a lot of Google telling us they know better than we do on how to enjoy ourselves.
Harassing in a public community? Sorry, you can't change the setting/restrict joining/sort by gender. Make a new community, and try to migrate 3k users if you can't handle it.
Hangouts from random strangers at a... more »

Here's a photo for #WhatsItWednesday ; I don't know if that's a proper theme, but I know there is stuff like it.
Anyhooo, this is yet another interesting thingy (pupa) I found inside an acorn (I kid you not).
Please be so kind to shout out all your guesses as to it's ID, no matter how specific. Feel free to include images or image-searches of the presumed adult.
I do not claim to know the ID myself, but I think it should be funny to see if you can come up with something similar to the adult.
Yes, I do have a picture of this specific individual as an adult, because I took this thingy home and it eclosed somewhere today. I will post it tomorrow or whenever I deem proper ;-)
Silly curious me. I let it go after taking some shots.
In this image we can still see some remains of its last shedded skin as a larva, and I guess that the... more »
