The Puente Nuevo "New Bridge" is the newest and largest of three bridges that span the 390ft-deep chasm that carries the Guadalevín River and divides the city of Ronda, in southern Spain. The term "nuevo" is a bit of a misnomer, as the building of this bridge commenced in 1751 and took until 1793 to complete. There is a chamber beneath the central arch that was used for a variety of purposes, including as a prison. During the civil war (1936 to 1939), both sides allegedly used the prison as a torture chamber for captured opponents, killing some by throwing them from the windows to the rocks below at the bottom of the El Tajo gorge.

Plaza de España in Sevilla is a majestic architectural complex built as the central office for the Ibero-American Exposition, a world fair held in Seville in 1929.  At night, the fountains are turned off, the canals become still and reflective, and it is transformed into a magical wonderland. The plaza is a massive half circle; the building runs continuously along the outside of the half circle while a large fountain is located in the center. One can easily spend an hour here just walking around the courtyard.

An interesting tidbit ... Plaza de España has been used for some of the scenes of episode II of George Lucas' STAR WARS saga Attack of the clones.

When I was about 12 years old, I was told that we were moving to Gibraltar. I was so excited about the prospect of a new adventure, and sorely disappointed when the whole thing fell through. During the brief period of time when my hopes were high, I did a large amount of reading on Gibraltar. And of course, what excited me the most were the monkeys. And for the last 15 years, the Rock of Gibraltar has placed high on my list of must-see places. I wasn't disappointed, and I'm proud to say I have now seen the monkeys! One even sat on my shoulder (and didn't bite me, thankfully). So here you go … a Gibraltar monkey, perched high on the Rock. At present, some 300 monkeys in five troops occupy the area of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

Reflections in Sevilla

On my recent trip to Sevilla, I visited the magnificent Plaza de España, a majestic architectural complex built as the central office for the Ibero-American Exposition, a world fair held in Seville in 1929. It is located in the Maria Luisa Park, just south of Seville's historic center. It is a harmonious complex in a typical regional revival style, which was very popular at the time. The red brick structure is decorated with colorful painted ceramic tiles.

Sevilla is a beautiful city, full of life, energy and activity. I felt I could stay and party for a few more weeks at least :)

I had one of "those" newborn sessions - baby cried the entire time, 5 hours straight. I was able to catch this shot in between the chaos. I do like babies, but there's nothing like photographing a mountain lake or beautiful castle at sunset. Much more predictable :)

Stamford in Lincolnshire is best known for its medieval core of 17th–18th century stone buildings, older timber framed buildings and five medieval parish churches. A settlement has existed here in Stamford since around AD 60, and by the Middle Ages it had become famous for its production of wool and the woollen cloth known as Stamford cloth - which was well known in Venice during the reign of King Henry III.

Stamford's uniformity in architectural design gives it a very "old" feel, and it's a lovely place to take a stroll on a sunny spring day.

The medieval centre of Delft, with its canals, bridges, squares and historic building façades makes the perfect backdrop for hours and hours of strolling. Close to Amsterdam, Delft’s perfectly preserved historical quarter offers visitors spectacular stately mansions, pubs, grand cafes and galleries alongside interconnecting canals.

Delft has long been a city closely connected to the Royal House of Orange. And this goes back to 1572, so there are many traces of this family’s presence here. Examples are the Stedelijk Museum Het Prinsenhof and the centuries-old Nieuwe Kerk.

The beautiful neighborhood known as the Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere. Despite several changes undergone in the 19th and early 20th century, many of the buildings date from Medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. The narrow, winding streets create quite a labyrinth and means that it may take a while to get your bearings.

The village of Dalham lies in a lovely rural area of west Suffolk, close to the Cambridgeshire border, on the east bank of the River Kennet. The village is full of attractive traditional cottages, many of them thatched in Norfolk reed or straw.

We had a very long winter in England, so today's glorious weather was a welcome change. Sometimes a picture can't do a scene justice. To fully comprehend the beauty of this village, you would first need to hear the hundreds of songbirds in the trees, feel the warmth of the low sun on your face, and smell the first whiff of Spring ...

Hope this weather sticks around.

The Crooked Church

The Oude Kerk (Old Church), nicknamed Oude Jan ("Old John"), is a Gothic Protestant church in the old city center of Delft, the Netherlands. The Oude Kerk was founded as St. Bartholomew's Church in the year 1246, on the site of previous churches dating back up to two centuries earlier. During its build the foundations weren't strong enough to support the building, and the church began to lean. As they continued to build the church they tried to compensate its lean on each layer of the tower, but it remains to this day that only the 4 turrets at the top are truly vertical.

Not a bad little view from our hotel in Delft :) We're here to see the tulips!

The Delft medieval centre with its canals, bridges, squares and historic building façades makes this town exceedingly cute and quaint. Delft is known for its historical ties with the Dutch royal familiy, Delft Blue pottery, the painter Vermeer and scientist Van Leeuwenhoeck. It's a great place to visit if you're visiting the Netherlands and want a quieter place outside Amsterdam to relax.

When you drive across the surrounding park and see Chatsworth House for the first time, a grand pile of yellow stone surrounded by gardens, fronted by the River Derwent and backed by a tree-covered hillside, it fairly takes your breath away. It is not hard to see why this is the premier tourist attraction of the area. But while the outside is a spectacle to behold, the interior rooms are also a treat for the eyes. You can explore over 30 rooms in this palace, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire since the 16th century. Chatsworth House is also famed for being the house of Mr. Darcey in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Kiera Knightly. I'm not sure what I was expecting to see in this house, but it certainly took my breath away.

Brighton Pier was opened on May 20, 1899, and more than 3 million people visit this pier every year. However, its had a rough history: It was nearly destroyed before it was finished. During a storm in 1896, timber from another pier repeatedly slammed into the new structure, causing substantial damage. And then in 2003, it suffered from a large fire. Firefighters, whose vehicles could not pass along the narrow pier, ran the quarter of a mile to the end of the pier to tackle the fire. But here it is today, still in great shape.

Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, known simply as Barcelona Cathedral, is a Gothic cathedral and seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, Spain. The cathedral was constructed throughout the 13th to 15th centuries, with the principal work done in the 14th century.

The cathedral is dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona, co-patron saint of Barcelona, a young virgin who, according to Catholic tradition, suffered martyrdom during Roman times in the city. One story says that she was exposed naked in the public square and a miraculous snowfall in mid-spring covered her nudity. The enraged Romans put her into a barrel with knives stuck into it and rolled it down a street. The body of Saint Eulalia is entombed in the cathedral's crypt.

This photo was tricky. I could find no official policy against tripods on the website or posted in the cathedral, so I proceeded with caution to... more »

Anne Hathaway's Cottage

Just a mile outside of Shakespeare's home town, in a village called Shottery, Anne Hathaway's Cottage awaits Shakespeare-loving tourists. Although it is often called a cottage, it's actually a large, twelve-roomed farmhouse. The earliest part of the house was built in the 15th century. The cottage was originally known as Newlands Farm in Shakespeare's day and had more than 90 acres of land attached to it.  Today it sits on a small (but beautifully landscaped) piece of land, and attracts over 50,000 tourists every year.

St Peter's Basilica as seen from across the Tiber River at sunset. I took this picture in the fall of 2011, but only recently dug it up from my photo library.  Occasionally when I have some time on my hands, I like to find for photos I overlooked. This is why I don't delete any of my photos. It's also why I own several large external hard drives :)

Fall is a wonderful time of the year to visit this romantic city - the throngs of summer tourists have thinned out, and the crisp cool air is a reprieve from the hot summer months. I can't get enough of Rome.

Richmond Castle as viewed from underneath the Bridge Street bridge. I awoke quite early for this sunrise last sunday, and it didn't disappoint. Though just one hour later, a storm moved through and brought snow flurries. Richmond is a romantic town, and perhaps the most interesting place I've visited in England. The castle is set high on the cliffs, and the ancient town is built around it. It's quite a lovely experience walking through its old, cobbled streets.

Richmond Castle, founded in 1071, sits proudly atop a rocky spur overlooking the River Swale. The castle's primary purpose was, apparently, to defend Alan Rufus and his followers against attacks by the dispossessed English of the area who didn't look too kindly upon their Norman conquerors. Except for skirmishes with Scottish raiding parties, Richmond Castle saw very little fighting.

It has been said... more »

An English Landscape

One of the best parts about exploring the world alone is the opportunity to meet other people. There is something about being a lone photographer that seems to draw people to me, and so I meet a large variety of interesting folks.

Today a local man saw me taking this photograph in the field, and pulled over his car to come talk to me. We chatted about this area, and he had lots of interesting facts about the local village. The church featured here is St. Mary's in Dedham. It was apparently John Constable's favorite church, and he frequently featured it in paintings.

Abbey Ruins in Bury St. Edmunds

The Abbey of Bury St Edmunds was once among the richest Benedictine monasteries in England. The site became home to the remains of the martyred King Edmund in 903 and the acquisition of such a notable relic made the monastery a place of pilgrimage as well as the recipient of numerous royal grants.

Sagrada Familia

What a place. What can I say that could possibly do this place justice? The Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece, is one of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions. Construction on this church will continue for at least another decade, but it has already become Barcelona's most important landmark.

The idea for the construction of a new church was launched by a devout organisation whose goal was to bring an end to the de-christianisation of the Barcelonese, which had started with the industrialization and increasing wealth of the city. The organization purchased a plot of land in the new Eixample district in 1877. The architect Francisco de Paula del Villar designed a neo-Gothic church and led the construction which started in 1882.

One year later, the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí took over as lead architect atth... more »

Meet Carcassonne, France. Hubby and I stayed here on Valentines this year.  What a wonderful city.

First signs of settlement in this region have been dated to about 3500 BC, but the hill site of Carcassonne became an important trading place in the 6th century BC.

Carcassonne became strategically identified when Romans fortified the hilltop around 100 BC and eventually made the colonia of Julia Carsaco, later Carcasum. The main part of the lower courses of the northern ramparts dates from Gallo-Roman times.

This is the Château de Foix, a castle which dominates the town of Foix in the French département of Ariège. Built on an older 7th century fortification, the castle is known from 987. In 1002, it was mentioned in the will of Roger I, Count of Carcassonne, who bequeathed the fortress to his youngest child, Bernard. In effect, the family ruling over the region were installed here which allowed them to control access to the upper Ariège valley and to keep surveillance from this strategic point over the lower land, protected behind impregnable walls.
