I now have the internet and a new computer. How lovely it is to see the World Wide Web again.

So awhile ago I asked if anyone would be interested in reading my blog and a few people said yes. Now I'm here to mention that you can do just that.
My blog is called Tales From the Lost Lands and its subject matter is primarily about the intersection of writing, politics, anthropology and fiction. There's a little about photography that I'll probably throw in there too when I move and have a better internet connection. When is that? April 15th. I'll probably be on G+ more then too and posting photos again by the end of the month. But we'll see. Check out the blog here:

It has been so warm in Virginia that it's hard to believe it's December. If this holds through the weekend (which will hopefully involve moving for realz) I will be happy.

No one else here wants snow, but I want snow because of things like this bridge at Devil's Hopyard in Connecticut a couple years ago.

I contemplated blogging a few months ago and I discovered HubPages which is a neat site that asks you to write articles on whatever topics you are interested/expert in.
If you like reading about American History, Geology, Neat Places to Travel to (especially state parks) or Dungeons and Dragons gaming, check out my Hub Pages articles. I've also written a couple about photography projects I've done. Many of the hubs also feature my photos.

A Veteran's Day Moody Monday
Veteran's Day is celebrated in the US on November 11th. Originally this was Armistace Day, or the end of World War I. After WWII, the holiday was expanded to include commemoration of veterans of all conflicts. It is observed on the Monday following the 11th, so today was a holiday in the US.
In today's military we see a lot of moodiness. Depression, PTSD and other psychological ailments affect 25% or more of our armed forces at some point in their tour of duty or afterwards. It becomes increasingly important to evaluate and support soldiers' mental health as well as physical health. Thank a veteran for their service, and remember that many wounds are not obvious. Support mental health resources for our armed forces.

I've had a tough week. On Sunday I hit a deer on my way from the new house to the farm. I was shook up but unhurt and only my driver's side turn signal and some paint was damaged. Coming home from Warrenton on Friday night I hit another deer. This time the hit was at high speed on a busy road. I was lucky that I didn't hit anyone else and no one else hit me. I do have whiplash in my neck and back but was otherwise unhurt. My car, however...

My thoughts and hopes are with the people still struggling to recover from #HurricaneSandy . I hope that what is rebuilt is better, stronger and wiser.

Quick phone shot of the Rappahannock River near Fredricksburg. Definitely flooded over its banks still.

Survived Hurricane Sandy. Never even lost power. Wind was so loud it was hard to sleep, and house was shaking bad. Flooding all over the place, but I've actually seen worse (during the derecho in July). Thoughts and prayers with those of you north of here in Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. I know it was much more severe for you there than here in Virginia.

Tomorrow/Today is a special Halloween Moody Monday
I am in the path of Hurricane Sandy so I may lose power and internet tomorrow, possibly for a few days. In the meantime, share your creepy, chilling and disturbed Halloween photos for Moody Monday this week and don't forget to tag +Philip Daly and myself so we can comment on them when we get a chance! This is especially important when #MoodyMonday trends because going through the tag stream we get bogged down with the non-photo contributions! You can also tag our +Moody Monday page.

Bracing for Impact
Next week from Sunday - Wednesday the remnants of Hurricane Sandy are forecast to converge with a cold air mass coming down from Canada and a warm air mass moving in from the west. The resulting effect is being called the "Frankenstorm" and it is likely that I will not have electricity or internet some or all of next week. Just a shout out to all you #MoodyMonday folks and +Philip Daly, you may have to continue on without me :D

The Phantom Ship
To visitors of Crater Lake at the turn of the century, this igneous extrusion appeared like a ghost ship in the southeast corner of the lake. I don't really see it, but it is a really interesting piece of the volcanic legacy of the mountain.

Sleeping Volcanoes
The "Ring of Fire" is the series of active volcanoes that surround the Pacific Ocean. In the Pacific Northwest only a few are still functionally active (think Mt. St. Helens) - but that doesn't actually make them dormant. Once upon a time, most of the peaks in this photo erupted. If the right forces were to shift, these old cones could heat up again.

Hi Moody Fans! I just got home from working on renovations to my new house and I see we were trending this week! That's always exciting but it also means I have thousands of posts to look through to find the ones that are photo-related. I see +Philip Daly was burning the midnight oil and still didn't catch up to everyone, so our apologies if we miss you this week. Thank you to everyone who participated this week for making us a Top Ten topic and we'll see you next week!
If you want to toss in a last minute #MoodyMonday entry, feel free to tag your friendly neighborhood curators - myself & +Philip Daly and our +Moody Monday page.

There's just something about this that I really like. It's really different from what I normally shoot but when you see the larger version and get that delicious gritty texture it really pops to me.

A Sliver of Decay
One of the tough things about a photowalk is that everyone there takes a picture of the "highlights" and you feel compelled to try a different approach to your processing to make your shot unique. This building in downtown historic Winchester, VA was one such object. When I accidentally dragged the crop tool the wrong way I wound up with this shape and decided to leave it for a different way of looking at this building.
For +Ian Ference's #TuesDecay . Ian would like this building - it is being restored to it's historic beauty which will include preserving the original colors and facade details. We did joke with others on the photowalk that as we were all milling about on the sidewalk trying to find good angles to shoot over the people and barriers on the lower part of the building, Ian would no doubt already be inside somehow, shooting the... more »

The Ring of Fire
Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier from the air. Color variations are due to shooting through the multi-layered glass.
8000 years ago this would have been a treacherous series of volcanoes, and Mt. St. Helens was considerably taller.

This is the first real star trails picture I've ever taken, up on the edge of Crater Lake. It's a 40 minute single exposure (I taped the button down, har har). I think the light pollution in the lower center is Medford, OR some 90 miles away.
