Shells Bells5,180Best of 2012 CircleThis circle is some of the G+ awesomeness that has enriched my life this year - and I am grateful.  A while back +Sean Cowen asked what G+ has meant to us.  After watching Brene Brown's TEDTalks (http://www.ted.com/speakers/brene_brown.html) I realize that for me, G+ has been a lesson in vulnerability and courage. I have been humbled by the courage of every one of you.  I love that women post no make-up pictures and that you all speak your minds (your clever, creative, crazy & beautiful minds...). I have been blown away by the public sharing regarding topics as deep as abuse and depression - talk about vulnerability and putting yourself out there - absolutely amazing.  By doing so, you have helped others in ways you may never know.  <3Inspiration's what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.  Led Zeppelin - Thank YouYou have inspired me. (warning TL:DR personal stuff below) Oh, & I did include some new peeps.  If they're freaks, blame +Ben Zaitz. This month, I gathered some courage and let three people see me in, what was to me, a position of vulnerability. The first was a very dear friend from Elementary School.  For the past few years, I avoided HIRLing because I was ashamed of my weight and I guess I didn't want to disappoint him.  The same reason recently kept me from seeing a dear High School friend.  I saw them and each did not care that I was not perfect, they love me for me.  Mann, it was great to see their faces again, talk in person and have some non-virtual hugs.  <3I attribute this change in thinking to your responses to a July post: https://plus.google.com/115807723984369772514/posts/Ui2TQBPuELKAmong the other awesome words from you peeps, +Alvin Stearns wrote, "Never again compare yourself to others so that you make unfair and useless judgments about yourself or others.  That includes comparing yourself to you in the past."  The third was that, with your encouragement on a private post, I actually asked a guy out.  I would have never even considered doing that a year ago.  (He has a gf, so no deal, but it's all good cause he was cool.)I know these are little things, but I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  And thank you to +matthew rappaport, Bobbi Jo Woods and +Tiffany Henry for coordinating the first NYCHIRL. Due to my kiddies, I couldn't see +Daria Musk and +Ryan Van Sickle2012-12-31 06:09:4450026231

Robyn Morrison9,230>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>The Sacred Sunday Thank You Circle<<<<<<<<    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>September 30, 2012<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Thank you everyone who posted to #sacredsunday    again this week. You've again shared with us what is sacred to you and we appreciate your participation very much!  This week's curators for +SacredSunday™  have been  +Manfred Berndtgen  , +Robyn Morrison    , +Justin Hill    & +Chatchai Rombix   .  We would all like to thank each of you for your wonderful contributions again this week.     SacredSunday is like a big travel around the physical and spiritual world, It brings people together and often gives us a wonderful glimpse into others' cultures and history. Our Thank You circle includes those who contributed to the theme this week (minus the trolls).  On behalf of the whole team:• Firstly, we would like to thank everyone. • There was a wonderful selection of very diverse contributions again this week and we are maintaining our great community of regular and new contributors. The team really appreciates your continued support• We realize that naming all of the curators can get to be a bit much so we ask you to name at least one of us and the page.   To make things a little easier for you, +Charles Lupica has set up a copy & paste function for curator names on the +SacredSunday™ theme page ( open the About tab)    Certainly, we all like to receive the notice so we hope you'll mention us all but we'll understand if you don't.Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you. It is possible we have missed thanking some contributors due to the numbers of people who post and the occasional glitches within G+ notifications. Don't worry, there will be a new circle next week and we will endeavour to include you all.Note: we want to be up front. Many of the people in this circle received a "notification" that we added them to our circles. This is2012-10-04 10:39:47167391131

They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to September 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting August 15th.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about2012-09-07 10:43:43345302

Many of the people in this circle are among the most interactive people on G+. Contribute top their themes, get to know them,  I think it will enhance your G+ experience.Best Regards+Charles Lupica ────────The circle has been checked for accuracy by most of the involved curators.  I would also like to thank +Steve Gill +Jason Borg +Manuella Betaille for their help in checking the existing themes. There are now over 400 themes, theme pages, and perhaps as many as 1000 curators but not all themes are created equal. I often talk about what it means to me to curate a theme and how I view things. To me, the best themes are the ones that have highly interactive curators. The vast majority also have a page to compliment their theme. A theme page is a great place for the curators to share information about the theme and to list the name or names of the people currently curating the theme. IMHO, a good theme page should provide information about the theme, how to participate, and who is curating the theme.  Most theme pages share some of the best work.  A few share all submissions. There are many themes that were created and then abandoned by their creator so I wanted to know, "Which themes rock?". I asked the G+ community to tell me which themes have highly interactive curators and an active community. This circle is based on community feedback and my personal view of what it means to have a theme that rocks.  ────────A good place to start if you are new to themes is perhaps the about page of +Monochrome Monday or the about page of +Daily Photography Themes +Daily Fine Art Themes.  If there are any themes that you feel rock that aren't mentioned, be sure to add a comment to this post, include the name of the theme, what day of the week the theme takes place or daily, the name of the page, and the name of the curators.  If there is no page, please state this.  Themes without a page are less likely to be listed but some very interactive themes don't have a page. 2012-08-29 13:45:173048691106

Jeff Sullivan131,363Daily Photography Themes on G+: Curators Circle v1.0Daily photo themes can be a great way to share your best work, or to find creative work by others for enjoyment and inspiration.Lists of the daily themes, with notes on any participation details, are maintained by the following people:+Eric Leslie - http://ericleslie.com/guides/daily-photography-themes-googleplus/+Kol Tregaskes - http://bit.ly/kolgplusphotodailyhashtags+Ray Bilcliff - http://www.trueportraits.com/daily-photo-themes.htmJust Include the theme like today's #SelflessSunday in the text of your post, and others can find it in searches and you can enter that tag in the search box at the top of the page to find photos by other contributors.  However, that only works if many people using a theme are looking at (and commenting on) each others' posts.  On G+, like in so many areas in life, you get what you give.I've created two circles: one containing theme pages and this one containing theme curators.  Theme curators are among the most active photographers (or photography lovers) on G+, but if they're actively curating their theme, visiting most or all posts and interacting with many (comments, +1s, shares), they're also among the busiest, especially as the G+ community grows.  Keep your expectations of them reasonable and you won't be disappointed.  The golden rule, karma, "what goes around comes around"... take responsibility and be the interaction you want to see.  As people come to recognize your comments and posts, you'll get to know people and develop circles of community members to interact with on G+.This is intended to be a comprehensive, inclusive circle, so if I've missed a theme curator please let me know, thanks!2012-07-08 15:27:4433222730

There are many themes that were created and then abandoned by their creator so I wanted to know, "Which themes rock?". I asked the G+ community to tell me which themes have highly interactive curators and an active community. This circle is based on community feedback and my personal view of what it means to have a theme that rocks.A good place to start if you are new to themes is perhaps the about page of +Monochrome Monday or the about page of +Daily Fine Art Themes.  This circle is part of an ongoing series and will eventually include, "Charles Lupica's guide to themes on G+™".*If there are any themes that you feel rock that aren't mentioned, be sure to add a comment to this post, include the name of the theme, what day of the week the theme takes place or daily, the name of the page, and the name of the curators.  If there is no page, please state this.  Themes without a page are less likely to be listed but some very interactive themes don't have a page.* *Because of the limitation put on posts by Google Plus, the curator names will not be hot linked nor will the page names.  Sorry if this causes an inconvenience but only 100 links can be put into a post and this one contains close to 300.* Let's rock.Sunday• Dawn on Sunday  #dawnOnSunday  +Dawn On Sunday  +Ray Bilcliff +Sherry McBriar • Sacred Sunday  #sacredSunday  +SacredSunday™  +Charles Lupica +Manfred Berndtgen +Margaret Tompkins +Robyn Morrison +Sherrie von Sternberg  • Selfless Sunday  #selflessSunday +#SelflessSunday Theme on G+    +Jeffrey Sullivan • Sentimental Sunday  #sentimentalSunday +Sentimental Sunday Theme   +Louisa Catharine Forsyth• Sign Sunday  #signSunday +Sign Sunday +Jonathan Davis +Lori Carey • Sky Sunday  #SkySunday +Sky Sunday - Photography Theme  +Randy Scherkenbach +Patrick Scherkenbach • *Zen Sunday*   #zenSunday +Zen Sunday +Charlotte Therese Björnström +Simon Kitcher +Nathan Wirth  ────────Monday• Backyard Birding Monday  #backyardBirdingMonday +Backyard Birding Monday #BackyardbirdingMonday   +Celeste Odono +Ricky L Jones• DOF Monday (Depth of Field)  #DOFMonday +DOFMonday +Mara Acoma +L2012-06-06 17:32:51260927778
Thomas Hawk2,461,0112,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev)This is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the first circle and includes photographers with the last name's A-Ev (although +Marc Evans you are in tomorrow's circle).  A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably 2012-06-04 16:53:26500235147424

So even if you don't add this circle, since Google+ requires users to circle a Page before that Page can share their posts, please be sure to add the Page so that we can include your image if/when we select it. Images that have more than a certain number of pluses (To be determined) will be added to the gallery almost without question. The curators of the theme will also pick images to add regardless of the number of pluses. This way, everyone will have a chance of being shown in the "gallery". The gallery shares will generally take place on Thursday or Friday.Hopefully the circle includes everyone that contributed to Monochrome Monday this week, but experience says we missed some. Everyone is important to the success of the theme and we apologize if we missed you.+Charles Lupica +Hans Berendsen +Jerry Johnson +Monochrome Monday and our newest curator +Manuel Votta would like to thank you for joining us this week. See you next week!!If we missed you we're sorry. Please let us know in the comments and I will try to make sure that you are included next week.Note: We want to be up front and transparent as your curators. Many of the people in this circle received a "notification" that we added them to our circles. This is a temporary circle that we have to create based on the tools available to us on this platform to build our circles, and please know that we can't keep everyone in the long term. Gene Bowker33,758Premium Blend v2 daytime reshare I shared this early on a Saturday Morning, so I wanted to reshare it on a weekday to be sure everyone sees it... these are some great folkI've made some additions to this circle since the last time that I shared it. I also dropped a couple of people who have decided to leave G+ for whatever reason. As with all of my circles that I share, this is a hand-selected group of folks who make my life on G+ a better place on a daily basis. Each one has a unique set of talents and the ability to interact. If you interact with them, they will take the time to interact back. To me, that interaction is what G+ is all about. There are some names on here that you probably already know and also some up and coming "stars" who I think will "name-brands" before they know it.There are also a lot of great folks who I interact with that are not in this circle yet. You'll find a lot of them in my "Extended Play" circle which is about 300 people. By the next time I share, a few more of them will have "graduated" to this circle which will always stay at less than 100.To my friends in the circle, thanks again for making G+ such a wonderful place to play.2012-04-16 15:28:488817214

I've had a tough week. On Sunday I hit a deer on my way from the new house to the farm. I was shook up but unhurt and only my driver's side turn signal and some paint was damaged. Coming home from Warrenton on Friday night I hit another deer. This time the hit was at high speed on a busy road. I was lucky that I didn't hit anyone else and no one else hit me. I do have whiplash in my neck and back but was otherwise unhurt. My car, however...

So awhile ago I asked if anyone would be interested in reading my blog and a few people said yes. Now I'm here to mention that you can do just that.

My blog is called Tales From the Lost Lands and its subject matter is primarily about the intersection of writing, politics, anthropology and fiction. There's a little about photography that I'll probably throw in there too when I move and have a better internet connection. When is that? April 15th. I'll probably be on G+ more then too and posting photos again by the end of the month. But we'll see. Check out the blog here:

I contemplated blogging a few months ago and I discovered HubPages which is a neat site that asks you to write articles on whatever topics you are interested/expert in.

If you like reading about American History, Geology, Neat Places to Travel to (especially state parks) or Dungeons and Dragons gaming, check out my Hub Pages articles. I've also written a couple about photography projects I've done. Many of the hubs also feature my photos.

A Veteran's Day Moody Monday

Veteran's Day is celebrated in the US on November 11th. Originally this was Armistace Day, or the end of World War I. After WWII, the holiday was expanded to include commemoration of veterans of all conflicts. It is observed on the Monday following the 11th, so today was a holiday in the US.

In today's military we see a lot of moodiness. Depression, PTSD and other psychological ailments affect 25% or more of our armed forces at some point in their tour of duty or afterwards. It becomes increasingly important to evaluate and support soldiers' mental health as well as physical health. Thank a veteran for their service, and remember that many wounds are not obvious. Support mental health resources for our armed forces.

Survived Hurricane Sandy. Never even lost power. Wind was so loud it was hard to sleep, and house was shaking bad. Flooding all over the place, but I've actually seen worse (during the derecho in July). Thoughts and prayers with those of you north of here in Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. I know it was much more severe for you there than here in Virginia.

Tomorrow/Today is a special Halloween Moody Monday

I am in the path of Hurricane Sandy so I may lose power and internet tomorrow, possibly for a few days. In the meantime, share your creepy, chilling and disturbed Halloween photos for Moody Monday this week and don't forget to tag +Philip Daly and myself so we can comment on them when we get a chance! This is especially important when #MoodyMonday  trends because going through the tag stream we get bogged down with the non-photo contributions! You can also tag our +Moody Monday page.

Bracing for Impact

Next week from Sunday - Wednesday the remnants of Hurricane Sandy are forecast to converge with a cold air mass coming down from Canada and a warm air mass moving in from the west. The resulting effect is being called the "Frankenstorm" and it is likely that I will not have electricity or internet some or all of next week. Just a shout out to all you  #MoodyMonday  folks and +Philip Daly, you may have to continue on without me :D

Sleeping Volcanoes

The "Ring of Fire" is the series of active volcanoes that surround the Pacific Ocean. In the Pacific Northwest only a few are still functionally active (think Mt. St. Helens) - but that doesn't actually make them dormant. Once upon a time, most of the peaks in this photo erupted. If the right forces were to shift, these old cones could heat up again.

A Sliver of Decay

One of the tough things about a photowalk is that everyone there takes a picture of the "highlights" and you feel compelled to try a different approach to your processing to make your shot unique. This building in downtown historic Winchester, VA was one such object. When I accidentally dragged the crop tool the wrong way I wound up with this shape and decided to leave it for a different way of looking at this building.

For +Ian Ference's #TuesDecay . Ian would like this building - it is being restored to it's historic beauty which will include preserving the original colors and facade details. We did joke with others on the photowalk that as we were all milling about on the sidewalk trying to find good angles to shoot over the people and barriers on the lower part of the building, Ian would no doubt already be inside somehow, shooting the... more »
