Storm over Lake Powell
Wahweap Overlook, Page, Arizona

My first visit to Lake Powell was memorable as I arrived there with an impending storm on the horizon. I didn't realise how quickly the storm was approaching, or how strong the winds would be. I had difficulty making my way back to the car. Learnt later that the wind speed was ove 60 MPH!

* Washington D.C. Sunset*

I completely love the way this shot turned out. From the moment I took it, I knew it would be one of my favorites from that first weekend in Washington D.C. It was taken from the beside the U.S. Capitol reflecting pool, looking back towards the Washington Monument. The nice thing is that it was still early enough that the scaffolding wasn’t high enough to show.

This shot got me an Honorable Mention in the +Chrysta Rae's Photography Scavenger Hunt put together by +Chrysta Rae. I was elated by that fact, given the number of incredible photos submitted.

Seacliff State Beach Sunset

Sitting here trying to survive the allergies that have taken over my life, and started processing a few old images cause I can't really focus on anything important like this.
The shipwreck is the old concrete ship The Palo Alto. The state beach is one of the nicest places for a sunset in late fall and so this was taken back in November of 2012

I’m up along the far northern California coast, scouting for my upcoming redwood workshops. I found a redwood grove that gets sunlight very late in the afternoon, and watched beautiful amber light streaming through the forest as I walked along the trail. This image is the result of one of those fortunate combinations of light and subject, where the rhododendron happened to grow in a spot illuminated by one of the very last rays of sun. Mono Lake Sunrise
I was shooting a time-lapse video on this morning when the card filled (I had forgotten to format it). I changed the card but that created a small glitch in the timelapse.

Then the battery died! I changed that. To get the battery out I also had to take my Canon off of the tripod head using a Manfrotto quick release plate. It doesn't necessarily snap exactly back into place, so you also typically get a sudden jump in some direction of a few pixels.

Both happened during the peak sunrise color, so I couldn't simply make a video from before or after the glitch, I had the best light interrupted twice!

I did keep shooting though, so I have lots of still pictures from the morning, and this is how we learn. I'm a lot less likely to make those same mistakes now when I shoot.

Mystic Mountain

I love mountains, fog and snow, so I am always happy when I can combine these three elements in an image. I captured this one during a snowshoe hike last January. It was a bit of a dull day with lot’s of fog and clouds … and it was way too cold. Most of the trail was in the shade, so there weren’t a lot of wide-angle opportunities. The fog around the mountains on the side of the trail was rather nice and interesting though, so I decided to focus on shooting them to see if I could get something intimate and dramatic. The only thing I badly needed was a 4th element to play along: the light. And it did!

No filters were used for this image. I already knew that I was going to process this one in B&W when I shot it. I used Adobe’s Lightroom 4.3 and Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 to get to thisresult.more »

Queen's Bath

Tried to bring something different to this amazing location. It's a natural pool on the Northeastern coast of Kauai. Fish swim in it, and so can you. As long as the ocean isn't dangerous. This whole area of coast is fairly dangerous, and claims lives every year...*

I used a polarizer to cut the reflection to showcase the fish that inhabit the pool here.

The Falling Light
Silver Falls State Park, Oregon, USA

My day at Silver Falls started with perfect weather - overcast with just an occasional light drizzle. By the time I headed down the trail to Lower South Falls, some breaks in the clouds were letting some sunlight through, so I had to wait for the clouds to block the sun from the water as I was shooting.

I (very) briefly considered converting this to black & white, but I couldn't bring myself to removing the color from this one. The color plays a big part in the mood I wanted in this image.

The Narrows

Navigating the Narrows at Zion National Park is one of the most fun hikes I have ever done. From nps.gov - "The Virgin River has carved a spectacular gorge in the upper reaches of Zion Canyon: 16 miles long, up to 2,000-feet deep, and at times only 20 to 30-feet wide. The Narrows, with its soaring walls, sandstone grottos, natural springs, and hanging gardens can be an unforgettable wilderness experience. At least 60 percent of the hike is spent wading, walking, and sometimes swimming in the river. There is no maintained trail because the route is the river. The current is swift, the water is cold, and the rocks underfoot are slippery."

So needless to say, carrying all my camera equipment was a challenge. I used a wetseal bag to make sure that if I fell in the river, my equipment wouldn't get soaked. I look forward to doing this hike again next week!... more »

Mono Lake Sunrise
I was shooting a time-lapse on this morning when the card filled (I had forgotten to format it). I changed the card but that created a small glitch in the timelapse.

Then the battery died! I changed that. To get the battery out I also had to take my Canon off of the tripod head using a Manfrotto quick release plate. It doesn't necessarily snap exactly back into place, so you also typically get a sudden jump in some direction of a few pixels.

Both happened during the peak sunrise color, so I couldn't simply make a video from before or after the glitch, I had the best light interrupted twice!

I did keep shooting though, so I have lots of still pictures from the morning, and this is how we learn. I'm a lot less likely to make those same mistakes now when I shoot.

When I was exploring the Moravian Windows with my friend & photographer Jana Vanourkova we found this canola filed with a group of trees surrounded by the canola. It was such beautiful landscape. I like the line in the field leading your eye to the trees and the beautiful clouds in the sky.

I think it was supposed to be a 15-minute stop, but it must have turned out to be an hour by the time all was said and done. I'm glad no one was in any huge hurry -- this was a really scenic spot.
