Thanks +Jolie O'Dell, this article is awesome. I video-interviewed Mary Lou Jepsen several times over the last few years at http://armdevices.net/category/companies/pixel-qi/
I can't wait to see what she does at Google X. I'm kind of disappointed that there was no new Google hardware announced at the Google I/O keynote, so I expect the whole range of Smartwatches, Chromesticks, new ARM Chromebooks, Internet of things, robots, Android home consoles, Google Drones, Moto X phones and hopefully Google funded Pixel Qi LCDs for Android phones, tablets and Chromebooks, all the Google hardware to hopefully be announced and shown sooner rather than later.
Now is the time to massively improve hardware as billions of people can hopefully soon get access to the Internet for the first time using these devices. The Internet experience on these devices should preferably be an extremely... more »

List here reasons for Intel not making ARM chips going forward.

$299 ARM Chromebook Pixel would have been way more impressive than a $1299 Intel Chromebook Pixel. I thought Intel's ex-CEO was quitting his Google's board of directors seat, I guess not yet.

We're adding an awesome new Android device to our Google Play line-up — the Samsung Galaxy S4 with the Nexus user experience. Coming June 26! #io13

New Google+ activated here. Now checking it out.
How cool are recommendations? I need to find new explore and auto hashtag features!

Developers can use Smartwatch, new ARM Chromebooks, Chromesticks, Internet of things, robots, Android home consoles, Moto X phones?
I didn't know Google I/O was a non-hardware event..
Google I/O shows no atoms, only bits.

Google+ Recommendations, it's going to be a very very big thing. I've been talking about it since Google+ was launched in 2011. Here's a part of it Google is launching for mobile websites.
Google+ Recommendations is going to be the biggest usage of Google+.

Bring on the Culture Tax +François Hollande !!
not just a bit of corporate taxing on Google and Apple, make it 5€ per French citizen per month in average, that'd be near 4€ Billion per year for French culture on the web! You can do it! Fix the whole culture problem!

Android Chrome OS merger does not mean same firmware.
Merger just means Chrome gets better on Android (full Chrome on Android, mainly about WebGL, Native code, Chrome Extentions, higher memory bandwidth better multi-tab support) and that some Android apps can work within Chrome Extension (limited Android app selection, only few that work without touch/compass/accelerometer/etc only the Android apps that work great with mouse and keyboard).
Basically it means that an ARM Powered Android laptop can run pretty much as good a Chrome browser that is on an ARM Powered Chromebook. Also within that new full Chrome on Android browser you can sleep/resume and have same speed/security/simplicity as when using Chrome OS. And it means that any Chrome browser including Chrome OS browser can soon get an Android on Chrome Extension, one with heavy use of native code and webgl to be able to run Android... more »

Comon Google, do the right thing. Google Play Games with a $5/month unlimited gaming subscription (let Google Play Game developers opt-in and/or opt-out).
Google can have 100 million Google Play Games/Apps subscribers in a year (5-10% of all Android users), that's potentially $6 Billion per year for developers, leap-frogging game developer revenues from Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and Apple platforms within a year!

It's so cool of Google to develop the 100% free and open source WebM VP9 video and Opus audio codecs, let's see how VP9 compares to HEVC H.265. YouTube may save half its bandwidth usage per video view by encoding and delivering a WebM VP9 stream instead of VP8/H264.
Let's see how VP9 and Opus hardware decodes on all the existing and upcoming cheap Android hardware.
Since software patents are most likely soon invalid in most of the worlds courts, the software patent issues vs MPEGLA for WebM is not going to be an issue.

Most Apple and Microsoft patents are hereby invalidated and worthless. Have a nice day.
Let's be clear: if all of these claims, including the system claims, are not patent-eligible, this case is the death of hundreds of thousands of patents, including all business method, financial system, and software patents as well as many computer implemented and telecommunications patents. says Judge Kimberly Moore.

Ming-Chi Kuo says new $199 Asus Nexus 7 has APQ8064, 1920x1200 LTPS screen, 4000mAh, so it has to be true?
I think Google showing off a $99 or $149 Nexus 7 Lite would be more aggressive.

No more passwords please.
I want to just type my same 4-digit pin code in my phone on a defined secure mode within an ARM TrustZone session (hardware encrypted un-crackable), my same little pin code can on my phone log me in to any website on the web, no passwords required.
The pin code on your phone could be replaced by face unlock, biometric, swipe unlock, any other pin-code like authentication action that you want. But the basic 4 or more digital pin code is likely going to be the main way to do it quickly.
Consider it may be like this:
1. enter URL or click in your browser for site that needs authentication
2. look at your phone, its screen turns on, secure pin code screen shows up (an LED light on side of phone for example a green LED light may also certify that you are in secure mode that you can for sure trust), enter your pin code, for example 4-digit pin... more »

+Eric Schmidt at D: Dive into Mobile, last month. http://allthingsd.com's video system is purposefully confusing, they prefer people read their many articles and pay the expensive conference ticket prices rather than watch full length videos on their non-YouTube (thus purposefully non-popular) video channel, but I found the video.

Guess Android activation count Google will announce at I/O:
2 million Android activations per day?
1 Billion Android devices activated?
Just 1 month after Eric Schmidt's 1.5 million activations per day announcement, it may be weird.. but I think 2 million per day may be closer to the real daily Android activation count.
Again I think that the trick is if Google counts non-certified Android devices also, like all those Chinese phones, tablets, HDMI sticks and more. Non-certified Android (but still with Google Play store mostly pre-installed without Google's permission) may be more than 25% of Android shipments worldwide.

Microsoft Windows 8 RT at Next Berlin I'm asking Microsoft Germany's Windows Product Marketing Manager Boris Schneider-Johne some questions about the status of Windows RT, I also ask about the Android competition, RT vs Pro market share, everything on Windows RT is encrypted, Surface RT is his secondary computer (Photoshop/Ligthroom doesn't run on RT), how often does RT crash? Connected Standby (gets latest info all the time through Connected Standby API), and I even ask questions which he obviously can't answer, about Microsoft claiming ownership over Android (announcing certain Microsoft Partner Android companies paying Microsoft a licence for Android) Cheaper Windows RT? $299 instead of $599? 13.3" RT? 7" RT? 8" RT? and the idea of making a Metro UI for Android (he says it can't work).

Android saves Sony. The massive profits that Sony is able to get from their rapidly growing sales of ARM Powered Android smartphones is subsidizing the massive losses coming from Sony's HDTV and Playstation businesses.

Yet another Android games console. What CPU does Bluestacks gamepop use? $6.99/month for unlimited gaming sounds about right, but I'd rather Google offer that for $5/month on Google Play store and give 95% or more of that subscription money to game developers.

I didn't read +Jolie O'Dell's article, but I'm going to comment on the first paragraph:
"the device only serves to make us look awfully nerdy"
People wearing it get masses of people starring at them and surrounding them, everyone is desperate to try it on themselves, Google Glass is the worlds strongest fashion statement.
"to make us economic targets"
at the risk of your face being filmed and stored online for police to look at. Glass like devices are likely going to be $299 unlocked without contracts within months from now, that means Glass costs half as much as a high-end phone, why should criminals want to target glass owners once it's a public device.
"to make us less aware of the world around us"
I can list you 20 apps that will make Glass wearers more aware of the world around them. One... more »

I filmed BenQ Joybee GP1 mini Projector review about 4 years ago, then I've contemplated buying a 1280x800p BenQ Joybee GP2 on ebay but now there is the Joybee GP3, I got to check it out and see where the LED DLP pocket projector market is at. Those pocket projectors are really amazing, you can find the older 800p DLP pocket projector models on ebay for below $300, I'll check http://www.projectorcentral.com/popular-pocket-projectors.htm for the latest that's available before buying my next projector.

Publishers are totally useless in the age of the Internet.
We need to get rid of the publishers as soon as possible for better e-reading and for authors to thrive.
Just as for the bogus software/design patents, just as for white spaces, just as for the adoption of self-driving cars, political intervention may be required.

Maybe this is what's going to happen at I/O:
Android 4.3 upgrades all current hardware.
Android 5.3 is same as Android 4.3 but for future hardware, for ARM Cortex-A15 and above, 2GB RAM and above, 12.3Gbit/s memory bandwidth and above. Android 5.3 uses hundreds of megabytes more in the firmware file to combine most of the features of Chrome OS and Google TV within Android. Android 5.3 may include Open GL ES 3.0, GPU Compute, full Native code and WebGL in Chrome (because you get same full Chrome browser as in Chrome OS). Android 5 devices may dual-boot any other OS like Ubuntu supported by default.
Android 5 would be for Laptops, Desktops, Set-top-boxes, Consoles, and for convertibles doing it all.
Samsung Galaxy S4 may upgrade to Android 5.3 but most other previous Android devices may stay at Android 4.3 (and perhaps Android 4.4 etc).
Does this make... more »

So maybe Singularity is just one algorithm away?
The idea arises from experiments suggesting that the portion of your brain dedicated to processing sound from your ears could also handle sight for your eyes. This is possible only while your brain is in the earliest stages of development, but it implies that the brain is — at its core — a general-purpose machine that can be tuned to specific tasks.

Some highly-requested improvements to Hangouts On Air
Have you ever missed the beginning of a live Hangout On Air and wanted to rewind? How about viewing and sharing your recording right after your broadcast, versus waiting for "processing…"? Today we're launching these, and two other features, to improve your Hangouts On Air experience:
- Rewind live broadcasts. Regardless when you start watching, you can always go back to the beginning.
- Access recordings immediately after your broadcast. Once you're no longer On Air, your recording will be waiting for you on YouTube.
- Watch higher quality Hangouts On Air on the go. If you're tuning in from your mobile device, you'll notice better-looking video.
- Start live broadcasts without having to refresh. When you visit a page with a Hangout On Ai... more »

This is just the last step of assembly happening in Brazil. Nothing actually gets manufactured in Brazil, they likely ship all the ready-for-final-assembly parts from China and do the last bit of assembly in Brazil and call it "Made in Brazil".
I'd like to see Brazil do something better than to force companies do final assembly in Brazil to escape a large protectionist tax. If Brazil wants to be protectionist, they should do it the correct way and support Brazilian brands instead, make new consumer electronics with Brazilian companies, comon Brazil, I know you can make a much cheaper and much better Android based home console, make it by a Brazilian consumer electronics company. Get better at it and export your innovation, you can still final-assemble in Brazil but do it on your own products, not the products of Apple or Sony.

Why can't users pay twice as much as advertisers pay to remove the YouTube ads?
Would you pay $10/year to remove the ads from your YouTube experience? (they can cap it at 3000 video views per year, then you have to pay more).
And what if people who can afford it can choose to pay $50/year for ads-free YouTube, thus paying the content creators (and YouTube) maybe 5x or 10x more than if they just were showing ads. The money can be distributed a bit more to videos that get +1 thumbs up ratings by that subscriber.
I want a YouTube subscription, but not for just one channel, I want it for the whole of YouTube, removing all the ads (content makers can still opt out but then not receive any part from the ads-free subscription money).
