More thoughts on the new Hangouts

If your friend is on the road with his or her phone in the pocket, would you then count that person as online for chat? You were about to answer yes to that question, right? :-) However, technically, that persons status would be idle. The only scenarios in modern day computing where a person will count as online for chat, is if that person is 1) actively using his or her computer, phone, tablet etc, 2) is logged in to the relevant chat program, and 3) has not muted notifications.

Would you only contact a person, if all of those criteria were in place? If the answer is no, do you then honestly care whether anyone is online or not?

ATX: Art Wall
Every few days new art appears. Every few days they paint over it. Then the art reappears. Now someone's knitted cozies for the concrete barriers. I love the tenacity of the artist and how the graphics cheer up this dreary wall next to the railway underpass...the one otherwise unpleasant part of the walk between Ladybird Lake and the so-called Market District.

6 Things to Love About The New Google+ Photos

There are a lot of features to discover in the new Google+!  Here are some of my favorite updates to Photos you might not have found yet.

1. Highlights view. The new photos landing page is called Highlights and it's your photo timeline -- showing you not only your best photos, but the best photos your friends have shared with you.

2. Trash view. Now when you delete photos, they go to the trash for 60 days. When you visit your trash, you can choose to restore photos (for those "oops" moments) or delete them permanently.

3. Photos search. When you do a search from the photos page, we'll search all your uploaded photos. It's pretty smart too -- we've brought all the awesomeness of Google search to your photo collection.

4. New organize mode. We have... more »

Photo-running in Delémont
We are spending part of the weekend at my parent's, in the town where I grew up, and I took my running gear along, just in case. The case presented itself rather quickly and strongly with a beautiful sky and a rain that kept procrastinating half hour by half hour to my great satisfaction. The pics are geo-tagged, directly uploaded from the Xperia P to Google. Enjoy!

Understanding the new Hangouts

The most important thing to understand is that is that messages will always be posted to the recipient. The difference lies in when the recipient is likely to see the message. If the recipient is 1) sitting right in front of his or her computer, 2) is logged into Hangouts, 3) has not snoozed notifcations and 4) is not idle, he or she will see the notification immediately.

If all of those requirements are in place the recipient will show up with a green line underneath on the desktop version of Hangouts. Until now, no one has been able to confirm that the mobile app has a similar indicator

To me Twitter is dying. Even if they have a large user base, the service is not so active, and people is more using it as a news source. I have been a big Twitter user during the years, but lately I have stopped using it. Actually it was after Google killed Reader and I decided to use Google+ as a news source instead, then I felt there was no need for Twitter anymore.

Hi there,

I like the new unified messaging system a lot - but I find it hard to understand the meaning the washed out pics on the contact list (not in a Hangout). Initially, I thought a clear pic was equivalent to a pic with a green line under on the desktop - but that can't be as I see people with clear pics on the app who don't have a green line on the desktop. Thoughts?

Thanks for putting up this community!

Good article - but not entirely correct about the meaning of the green line under profile icons.

"About Hangouts availability

You can start a Hangout with anyone you want, anytime you want. When you start a Hangout with someone, you can look at the person's profile picture in your Hangouts list to find out whether the person will be notified about the Hangout immediately or later on.

Profile picture with a green bar underneath it: This person will be notified about new messages or video call invitations immediately.

Profile picture without a green bar underneath it: Users in the status are likely on a mobile device, have Snooze Notifications enabled, or are idle on their computer. They will be notified about messages and video call invites, but they may not see it immediately"

G+ has become an orgy of whining and misinformation. I'm seriously thinking about taking a summer break.

2013-05-17 17:35:31 (7 comments, 0 reshares, 8 +1s)

I find it quite amusing that most critics of the alleged focus on images over text often communicate in a pretty aggressive visual style using animated gifs, memes and every other visual trick in the book to get their point though.

This post is mostly written to prove that a post containing only text will be wasted even on the most intense critics of the visual focus. Below is a really simple way to keep enjoying G+ which is entirely based on information readily available to every G+ user. I predict that that method will drown completely in the very loud critique and in lots of widely applauded but extremely tedious workarounds to keep the text alive in the face of evil, evil Google's attempts to reduce us all to mindless social zombies.

Never mind Plato or Aristotle. The real deep question of western philosophy is whether Hangouts show offline status or not. Well...the answer is: no. I'll happily repeat that answer for you. It was: no.

If you don't believe me, I can recommend something really radical: read the help files. Here's something to get you started. Of course, you run the risk of understanding why the concept of "offline" is completely obsolete, if you read on. You have been warned

Google launches tool for Google+ recommendations on mobile news sites.

When you're reading a news article on your phone in the near future, you'll see a linked field at the bottom offering related content on Google+. As you continue to read the related content, more related content will be offered.

It's a smart feature. News sites will want to use it because it will send readers to their Google+ content and supports their Google+ pages while still keeping them on the web sites (the Google+ layer comes in on top of the news article. When you dismiss the layer, you're back on the original article).

Readers will like it because it will enable them to explore an issue by just following the related content links.

And Google will like it because it brings people into Google+.
