What a great thing to get one's blood coursing before breakfast.
A small example: 

Chapter 3. 

_I don’t want art that needs fixing. I want art that sends me back to the studio to fix my own.

There’s a certain sour pleasure looking at work and seeing its faults and knowing how it could be better. Years of teaching has made this automatic for me. Unfortunately, this happens too much of the time.

There is nothing like the provocative thrill of finding something that looks right back at me and asks, “Is your work this good?”_

I'm Not A Fan Of Blogs

I'm not saying ALL blogs are bad, but there are a lot of them, and a lot of those aren't worth the bandwidth they occupy.

You know I'm right.

That being said, there are the exceptions to the rule...

Take this entry in this blog for example. I just want to jump up and say HALLELUJAH when it comes to #5. Someone who just needs to bawss all teh things and using my work as a springboard to one-upmanship is THE biggest irritant of all. Tell me what I should do? FTN.

Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before

I came across this anonymous blogpost earlier today and was gobsmacked by the similarities to so many stories of former adjuncts, myself included.

In my case it's a dozen years of my life that started with so much promise and ended in rejection, but you know what? I am free of the passion of belonging to that particular club now, and I am free to say/do what I please without fear of recrimination from those who would consider themselves my betters simply because they were tenured and I was not.

There is a code of expected silence and behaviour around sessional employment, especially when these adjunct positions come to a screeching halt through no fault of the adjunct. Somehow we should be grateful, as if someone did us a favour in letting us teach, getting paid less than a living wage for the experience of sniffing... more »

OK, googleplus.  The way I see it, with any major UI change, there are about three categories of problems.

(Edit. Google sent this in mid type, editing to fucking complete it.)

There are ACTUAL bugs.  So for example:
1) The current tendency to send posts or comments in mid composition IS A BUG.  Fix it.
2) The notification box's (blue or red) UTTER INABILITY to count IS A BUG.  Fix it.
3) Incoming notifications marking unread notifications as read IS A LONGSTANDING FUCKING OLD BUG.  Fix it.
4) Completing a hashtag at the end of a post and being sent to the top of your edit post IS A BUG.  Fix it.
5) The notification panel randomly closing on you while reading it IS A BUG.  Fix it.
6) Under more, the layout option between multicolumn and single column affects only the main stream.  THIS IS A BUG. It should be across the board, and whilewe'... more »

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the violent birth of the most controversial, influential and important piece of classical music written in the 20th Century, Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. 

When this piece was premiered, at an illustrious Paris concert hall attended by the elegant, sophisticated glitterati of the age (including Jean Cocteau and Claude Debussy), it caused a riot. A ballet. There was stunned laughter, shouts and cat-calls, people throwing things at the stage and fist fights breaking out. A police presence had to attend the second half to subdue the audience. Epic Resignation

Teaching has become a bureaucratic yes-man's maze. This teacher says no to a transfer intended to silence her refusal to accept the changes in contemporary education.

Good for her. The video is 10 minutes worth of damning accusations, and as anyone who has ever taught likely knows, it's also highly, sadly accurate.

This is so cool...  Among many other tidbits:

Juvenile birds learn these things early in life by interacting with the predators through testing their reactions. Juvenile ravens often will land nearby and nip them from behind. This so-called risky “play activity” is dangerous but ultimately aids in the birds’ survival by providing information about the capabilities of various predators. By deliberately provoking them, ravens learn which animals they can trust and how far away they must stay to remain safe.

There is a lot of confusion around this word, so let me break it down for you.  There is nothing wrong with the actual word, midget; it’s just a word to describe something that is very small, for example, Midget Carrots, Midget Car Racing, my ex-boyfriend is an emotional midget.  The word midget becomes offensive when it’s used to objectify a person of short stature, as in Midget Tossing, Midget Porn, Midget Rentals, where you can literally rent little people for parties and events.

Don't Like 21st Century Abstract Painting? Don't Look.

I got home from the studio and my husband asked if that was paint on my thumb. I took a look and said to myself, yep, I've acquired painter's hands. 

It started out as a crappy work day, ultimately sabotaged by those very hands dropping a freshly glazed board covered in the last of the reserves of the gray paint.

No problem! The will is strong even when the body is tired. I did what all artists do: cleaned up, carried on, and at the end of a rapidly improved day came home to revel in the first lilacs of the season.

Mmmmmmm. Lilacs.
