Black and Dark

It was a very dark day at Thingvellir National Park in Iceland.

The clouds were very low and this gloomy feeling was even further emphasized by the black pebbles and dark rocks near this nice waterfall called Öxarárfoss. The place is indeed located near a volcanic area.

In 930 the Icelandic Parliament was founded there.

The +Swiss Photography Club G+ would like to invite you to a photo walk in and near Luzern on Saturday 8 June. The walk will offer long exposure, street and landscape photography opportunities.

The Photowalk

We will start the day in the city center of Lucerne, where there will be opportunities to do city/street photography near the old town. At the end of the morning we will grab a few sandwiches in preparation for the afternoon part of the walk .

In the afternoon we will go up to the Pilatus mountain. Pilatus is one of the most legendary places in Central Switzerland, and one of the most beautiful. On a clear day the mountain offers a panoramic view of the Vierwaldstättersee (lake Lucerne) and 73 Alpine peaks.

Harmony of contrasts

Iceland is a land of contrast and extremes.

I love when I can capture such a scene where the sun illuminates a peaceful part of it while the threatening clouds are just at the corner.

This image shows how Iceland offers us such dramatic situations where everything can happen... and often the expected will happen!

Sheltered barn

I know that I have announced in my last post that it was my last winter post...
But after several days of spring (or even summer) with temperatures above 20°C, it has snowed again here in Switzerland!
So I thought that I would nevertheless share a last image of winter this season.
I hope you do not mind ;-)

Whan I saw this little barn and the surrounding forest, I imagined that it was in a sense protected from everything by the huge trees behind it.
Especially when I noticed those threatening clouds coming...

Plus One Collection 2012 Book Update

Hot off the press

Finally had the first production copies hot off the press, I have to say that it looks fantastic. The fine art printing carried out by Oddi from Iceland is top class! 216 pages of 150gsm Finess Premium Silk with all images UV matt varnished - is really something to behold. The quality in both colour and mono reproductions are beautiful.

Delivery
Dispatch of the books will be ready to send out in about 3 weeks, as the final shipment is winging it's way to +Ivan Makarov's garage as we speak! :) Anyone who wants to join Ivan in the pre shipping party, be sure to let him know, I'm sure he could do with your help!!

Attached a few 'rough' images of the book, I assure you the book looks a lot better than these quick fired shots...

The valley

This shot has been taken in Landmannalaugar, Iceland. The mountains are located only 20 kilometers from the famous volcano Hekla.

Below, in the valley, the plains of fluorescent green moss are mixed with clear flowing rivers.

After a day-hike, you can imagine how relaxing it is to bath in a natural warm-water pool created by hot-water streams and hot springs! A unique experience!

e-mails notification problem?

Does anyone also notice e-mail notification problems on G+?

I receive notifications in the red right corner, but it seems I do not receive any of these on Gmail (for example, when someone is mentioning me in a post).
(of course I have already set to receive this kind of notification via e-mail).

It was working fine until some days ago, but now some notifications seem to be lost in space..

Any experience on that problem?

Floating in the air

Do you remember the game where you have to put four identical pieces in a row - horizontally, vertically, or diagonally?
When I saw these isolated trees lost in the cold winter, I could not resist thinking I was winning the game even without having to play...

Sunrise over the Colorado

This is a very classic view from Dead Horse Point in Utah.

I like this kind of landscape at sunrise when nobody, or maybe just a very few other fellow photographers are on the same spot.
I really appreciate this magnificent moment where the sun is enlightening the first parts of this beautiful landscape below my eyes.

These trees were located right on the border between the fog and the sun.
In my opinion, they were eagerly waiting for the sun to warm them up...

Great start of weekend

Yeahhh, my image Between rain and sunlignt has been featured in Jarek Klimek's Plus Extract!

Between rain and sunlight

A typical view of an icelandic landscape and a typical day in that fabulous country.
Some heavy drops of rain were starting to fall and at the same time the sun was still enlightening some part of the region.
You can even distinguish the rain falling on the water surface in the left part of the image.

3 sisters in the mist

The mist was very insense last weekend while trying to capture winter scenes not far from home.

When I noticed these trees lying tight against each other, I had the feeling that, in their way, they were just here trying to warm up together in this cold and silent winter.
If only these trees could speak...

Godafoss

Godafoss is probably one of the most known waterfall of Iceland.

This iconic place can be very crowded at times, but I find this spot incredible due to its circular shape and powerful water flow.
This beautiful scenery was still enhanced that day by the dramatic weather that added an almost surrealistic look.

Birds shivering with cold

This time I have tried a high key capture for a change.

As it is a long exposure, some of the birds on the poles have moved a bit, although I had told them not to ;-)
By looking now at these birds on the image, I have the feeling that they were just shivering with cold (as I was myself this day)

Life prevails

After my last shared images that were definitely on the cold side, I wanted to warm you up with a picture from my last trip to the Moroccan desert.

It is always amazing that life can still prevail in such a harsh environment.
The green parts of this bush show that it is still alive despite the drought of the place.

PLUS ONE COLLECTION 2012 SUBMISSION

I am thrilled to submit my first image to the Plus One Collection coordinated by +Ivan Makarov.

I have much hesitated to choose my favourite picture from 2012. A color one? A b&w one? A long exposure? A desert? A lake?
At the end I have chosen Lonely heart because I think that this hidden heart is perfectly suited at this charity project: a little piece of my heart for this wonderful cause.

A new beginning

Now that the end of the world has gone, here is the time for a new beginning...

At this time of the year, I would like to say a big thank you to all my followers that appreciate my images, and greetings to all the friends I have met thanks to Google+.

Snowy winter

Last weekend a huge quantity of snow fell down in Switzerland.
The landscape was totally white, a beautiful scenery all around my eyes.
I could not resist to go out in the cold and in the mist and take pictures!

This one was taken at the end of a small path in the surrounding mountains.
I was alone to enjoy the winter show...

A Lake, a Pier and some Reeds

Some weeks ago I went with +Johan Peijnenburg to take pictures along the Lac de Neuchâtel in Switzerland.
At the end of the day, we were lucky to be in a lovely location when the sun was setting.

Johan's picture has been taken from the end of the pier, while I stayed in front of it to include the wooden pier in the image.
I liked the reeds around this nice wooden pier and the colours of the sun at that moment.

On the edge

Selfoss might not be the tallest or the most impressive waterfall in Iceland, but I like this wide plateau where the water falls into the river.
It is as if there were many little waterfalls feeding the river below.

The clouds accentuate this striking point of view, and the couple on the left edge shows the scale of this area.

Ghosts

This seascape was taken this summer near Quiberon (France) in a beautiful area called Côte Sauvage (Wild coast).

The ghosts that you see in the foreground are my kids.
I was tempted to remove them from the scene as well as the other people on the distant rock, but then I thought it would be a funny image to share for once!

And anyway we don't get rid of our children so easily ;-)

Rivers

It was an amazing day when hiking in this beautiful area called Lanadmannalaugar in Iceland.

The weather was overcast. Sometimes the sun succeeded in breaking through the clouds and illuminating some parts of the landscape and therefore creating some nice patches of light.

Unfortunately this game did not last long and I returned to the base camp completely wet...

Who needs a rest?

This image has been taken in a beautiful little village called Siglufjodur in north Iceland.

There were two lovely adjacent colourful buildings whose I could not resist to take pictures of.

I used the reflection of a window to include a part of the other yellow house while capturing the red one.

Couple on a bridge

This image was taken during a very cloudy day in Portalban on the shore of lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

At first, I did not want anyone on the bridge during exposure, especially if people would be displayed on the final image as ghosts.
I was lucky because this couple stayed without moving during the long exposure.
They were probably as wonderstruck as myself looking at the scenery that nature was producing at that moment.
