Mount Snowdon Railway engine
This is a rack-and-pinion engine, designed to pull passengers up to the summit of Mount Snowdon in Wales, a journey of almost 5 miles. It is the only working railway of it's type in the UK as far as I am aware. My son is looking at it here on a VERY misty day at the summit and wishing he had taken a ride in it instead of walking up!
This photo dedicated to +Gene Bowker who is celebrating his birthday today #happybdaygene

The Scotch Piper
This pub is almost 700 years old
The Scotch Piper is a beautiful little thatched public house on the A5147 between Lydiate and Maghull in Lancashire. It is almost 700 years old! The bar is wide enough for two people to stand at it, and the beer is still for the most part hand pumped. There are lots of little quaint snugs to hide away undisturbed with a loved one - but there are downsides too - all the toilets are still outside in external outhouses!

My first ever attempt at an astrophotography picture.
This was using a telescope with a motorised mount I bought around 6 months ago. Tonight was first time I set it up with the motor, aligned it to polaris and stuck my camera on the back of it. Note the camera is not looking through the scope, merely using the EQ mount.
There is some movement in the stars but the plough is clearly visible so I am quite pleased for a first attempt considering the exposure was almost 16 minutes at f8!
Anyone have any tips, or can point me to any online guides for beginners that would be very much appreciated!

I really wanted to take a new photo today but life got in the way again so I am re-using this one, albeit with a different edit. I think I prefer this version to the original one I posted.

I have no words
What? Why?
Things I have often asked myself as I pass by these outside a farmhouse in Great Altcar near Formby, North-West England. To give you an idea of scale, it is almost 2 metres from the ground to the top of the bear's head.

I did an engagement shoot on Saturday for this couple who will be married in June. The ceremony sounds fabulous - the dogs will be taking part, as will the bride's horse... and the bridal car is crazily cool! Really looking forward to the day now, and praying for good weather :)

Detective Mystery
I did this for a recent community challenge and really enjoyed it. Had to find a location with an old looking lampost and had the idea in my mind of a black canvas with the shadowy figure off-centre, lit by the lamp.
It is a self-portrait, and I am lighting a match to light my face. Best viewed full screen to see any details!

Hopefully we will have a sunset or two like this in Southport this year.
The Pier, once almost destroyed through neglect, now a jewel of the town and a bit of a mecca for tourists.

Check out the short video below (it’s like 90-seconds or so) which explains why Adobe is doing this unprecedented sneak peek, but once you watch that, here are the specifics:
Who: Tom Hogarty from Adobe Systems
When: Wednesday, May 1st at 4:00 PM ET (New York time)
Where: Live on “The Grid” at http://www.kelbytv.com/thegrid
Why: This is your chance to get straight answers straight from the source and to see a sneak peek of some stuff I haven’t even seen yet — but I heard about them— and you’re definitely going to want to see ‘em! (everybody will be talking about it on Thursday!)
See you on Wednesday!

Epic Fail
... or how NOT to take a photograph.
This could have been a good photo. Setting sun, shot from a bridge in Warrington, North-West England. I saw it from my car and hurriedly pulled over, grabbed the camera and setup the tripod as the sun was rapidly lowering.
I thought to myself the Sun is through the trees, the church spire, all looking good, when around the corner of the river come several boats being rowed by some fit looking young ladies. It doesn't come better than this.
I get maybe 20 shots off before the sun disappears and head home delighted with myself. Load them up eagerly - and they are all out of focus. For a previous job I had put the camera on manual focus and forgotten about it. All looked OK through the viewfinder but was obviously not.
Gutted

Experiment today... When I joined the motorway network I reset my car's MPG. some 50 miles later, just as I was exiting the motorways, this was the result.
If only it would stay up there all the time!
By the time I got home (another 80 miles or so I reckon) it had dropped to 73mpg.
2008 Ford Focus 1.6 diesel econetic. Pretty steady at 60mph.

A recent sunset on a cloudy evening. There were some great "fingers of light" poking through the clouds on my drive home but by the time I found somewhere decent to stop these had diminished somewhat.

OK so here is my location, with the oldest looking lamppost I could find where I live.
Now I am just waiting for a dry night when I am not working...

Do I need a story by the way? I was kind of hoping the end photo would tell enough of a story and leave lots of unanswered questions.

I have found the location, and have a backup location that could work almost as well. This is really proving more of a challenge than I thought it would!
Costume is done but I am hovering between my original idea and a slight twist on it now I have seen the location. I may end up doing both ideas and see which one I prefer on screen.
I think a better title for mine is going to be
"What's black and white and vintage all over"

"What's black and white and red all over?"
After I discarded newspapers, I quickly settled on the next thing that came to mind - old movies, specifically murder mysteries.
I ended up with an idea for a detective in classic 40's garb, trenchcoat, trilby or fedora hat, cigarette, leaning up against a lampost, dimly lit apart from his face. Dark and moody, preferably slightly misty or smoky, we shall see.
Very basic sketch (I am no artist!) Hoping for an interesting background, yet to be determined, maybe a street view with a body or the chalk outline of one. Some blood could be spot coloured red.
I really hope I can finish this in time... John

Not sure what happened here in Delamere Forest, Cheshire, but there is a large area of dead trees in boggy ground. These two trees are the lone survivors.

Yes! Just won the auction for the 8Tb Buffalo LinkStation Pro Quad NAS. At last a home for my photos that won't fill up in a hurry :)
How do you store your photos and RAW files? I'd be interested in hearing any novel ideas for this. Currently I have 2 custom built Linux NAS boxes with a single 2Tb drive in each of them. One box mirrors the other for resiliency but they are nearly full and I figure I should be more professional and go with a RAID solution. I intend to re-use the 2x 2Tb drives in my new PC as local storage (striped) and back the whole lot up to the new NAS.
I have all wired gigabit network at home, so speed is not too much of a worry.
