So according to the immigration office, a person cannot be moral without a supreme being? Does the Flying Spaghetti Monster count? Or, perhaps Cuthulu?

Can any lawyer or legally knowledgeable person speculate on why Scalia did this? Basic genetics isn't religiously or politically controversial, and people tend not to go out of their way to admit ignorance.

People ask me how I justify taking several years of income earning away to go to medical school. This is why.
It turns out that despite my lack of ability (well, more like tolerance) to argue with the economic right, I have a far better grip on reality than they do. Then again, they are primarily concerned with their own reality and not those below their station in life. Libertarian right, near as I can tell, are little more than social Darwinists.
I suppose my conclusions come from the fact I spent a significant amount of time as a 10 year old stealing other peoples' trash for personal use and to resell to others (after cleaning and repair) as a way of life.
Then I get to listen to Libertarians right wingers say nonsense such as "But why would anyone ever do something that puts them at great disadvantage?"
I don't know, maybe the need to e... more »

Today (June 16) marks the 50th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's landmark 1963 flight, which launched her into history as the first woman to fly to space, just two years after Yuri Gagarin performed the first spaceflight ever in 1961. 50 Years of Women in Space: http://oak.ctx.ly/r/6bij

Scientists, contrary to myth, do a lot of public speaking, but the way we go about it is kind of odd. DAMOP last week reminded me of this, leading to a blog post.

Today is the 50th anniversary of JFK's commencement address at American University, sometimes known as his "Peace Speech". The theme of the speech is peace, both with the Soviet Union and in general. Here are a few highlights (you can watch the full video and read the transcript at the link below).
What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children--not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women--not merely peace in our time but peace for all time...
Let us examine our attitude toward peace itself. Too many of us think it is impossible. Too many think it... more »

I signed this petition to let the White House - and yeah, the NSA - know where I stand on Edward Snowden, the guy who blew the whistle on PRISM. If you're a US citizen, consider joining me.
He writes:
We managed to survive greater threats in our history than a few disorganized terrorist groups and rogue states without resorting to these sorts of programs. It is not that I do not value intelligence, but that I oppose omniscient, automatic, mass surveillance. That seems to me a greater threat to the institutions of free society than missed intelligence reports, and unworthy of the costs. In one step, we’ve managed to justify the operation of the Panopticon.
The Panopticon was a building designed by the philosopher Jeremy Bentham in 1790's, which lets a watchman observe all the inmates without them being able to tell.

Lyon, France, operates a bike share program called Velo’v, which exemplifies how efficient bikes can be as a way for commuters to get to work. The program facilitates 16,000 trips per day, and that number doubles when public transportation workers go on strike. Only in France would this statistic be so important.

Does the proliferation of cell phones mean that future generations won't understand the meaning of, "Here's a quarter, call someone who cares"?

Still stunned on the loss of Tim Samaras, his son Paul and Carl Young in the El Reno, OK tornado on Friday.
I first got in touch with Tim Samaras and later Carl Young after the Vortex2 summer I spent with Mississippi State as part of my grad school geosciences program. They were one of the featured teams on Discovery Channel’s popular “Storm Chasers” series, as the group most often focusing on the real science of severe weather forecasting and tornado analysis. They were also the most likely to keep well clear of tornadoes - never with the intention to have their vehicle encounter tornadoes, rather leave probes and weather gear behind to study that for them.
I had last talked with Carl (who lived in Reno and from the Tahoe area) in March about him possibly joining us on our weekend morning newscast to show some of this year’s storm photography and research, then we had the news o... more »

How to count to infinity
One of the most basic questions in math is how to count things. You would think that this would be pretty simple, but it actually has a number of surprises in it -- some of which drove noted mathematicians mad. It turns out, for example, that “infinity” has a real and concrete meaning which you can talk about, and there are even sizes of infinity. Today I’m going to take a walk through the infinite -- and mind your sanity, please!
Let’s start with a simple question: what does it mean for there to be three somethings? In fact, what does “three” actually mean? “The number that comes after two” is a bit of a cheat, since then you just have to define “number” and “two.” You can point to three oranges and indicate taking some away and adding them, which tells you how to work with three, but actually giving a definition is a bit tricky. The trick (as discovere... more »

A feel-good public relations move that just might do some good… Coca-Cola has set up hyper-window vending machines in India and Pakistan that let you meet, play games or dance with folks in the other country, then toast them with Coke. I hope this isn't a one-off and that they will deploy dozens. Also, I hope the screens are Gorilla Glass viz the inevitable hate attacks. Clearly they must be set up in affluent and highly supervised shopping malls. Still… what fun.

"the novelty criterion has led to many authors desperately striving to delineate their own unique corner of the scientific territory, sometimes reminiscent of a second rate circus act proudly declaring that it is the first time ever that someone is juggling three clubs while standing on one leg in a bucket of water, simultaneously yodeling Auld Lang Syne. This is distracting, at best."

I listened to this song today and it made me think of the Tsarnaev brothers. A song that had nothing to do with terrorism when written but contains enough empathy to give you some insight into it can only be described as great.
