I've been working on the business side of my light-up shoe business today. My first prototype shoes had about $130 in parts, and took me almost 4 hours to make. After consulting with the person who is going to be my first beta tester, I narrowed down the parts list a bit. I also sourced parts and supplies from China instead of from Amazon which brings down costs quite a bit (the lights themselves went from $65 to $20). My final cost to customize a pair of shoes is now only $35.63 and will take only an hour of my time. This cost optimization will allow me to sell them on Etsy for around $100 instead of $200 with the customer providing their own shoes.

After my first beta user has a chance to put the shoes through their paces I'll be looking for more testers. Testers will need to ship me a pair of shoes and pay for the return shipping at least, and maybe pay for parts depending on how close... more »

I watched a science-y thing last night that made a good argument against intelligence evolving by default: sharks have been evolving in the oceans for 400 million years and have not evolved intelligence.

And take a look at what humans have done with intelligence. We've brought the planet to the bring of uninhabitability. Whether we slowly poison our atmosphere and water, or kill ourselves off with a nuclear bomb, I believe humanity will bring about its own demise.

I don't think there is intelligent life out there to be found. Either it simply isn't a trait that evolves with any regularity, or intelligent life always ends up wiping itself out.

This is the final design of the shoes I've been working on. I got the parts for these from Amazon. Now that I've finalized my design I've ordered the parts in bulk from China. I'll make a bunch more shoes and a good video of them in April when I have a model to show them off on video.

I think Hillary Clinton just changed my opinion on the death penalty. Or maybe she helped me clarify it a bit. I have always been against the death penalty in all cases because I don't think the state can say "killing is wrong so we are going to kill you".

Clinton said she supports the death penalty in very limited circumstances for very heinous crimes and that got me thinking.

I now believe the death penalty is appropriate for treason when someone directly kills, unprovoked, a representative of the government. That doesn't mean killing a police officer. But if someone were to assassinate the president I think the death penalty would be appropriate. There are other offices I think may apply, perhaps a supreme court judge. I'd have to think about it more.

So the 10000mAh is a flat out lie. I'm not surprised, but shouldn't this be illegal? It's 20% less than it claims. What if a TV said it was 40" but turned out to be only 32"? Surely that would be illegal. In fact, isn't it even less than this since it's a 5v output but a 3.7 battery? It claims to be a 50.0Wh battery but it's really just over half that at 29.6Wh.

I think once I finalize the design and get the price down a bit I'll be able to sell these pretty well on Etsy. Just look how much better the bottom shoe is! New controller + batter pack on right

Note, the final battery back will actually be about half this size. For this one I used one of those DIY project boxes. When I have a custom box made it will be quite small and the same microUSB that powers the lights will also recharge the controller/battery box. My goal is to get it small enough to fit under the shoes laces.

With the little bit of energy I had today (although still quite sick, haven't eaten any solid food since Friday) I worked on my light-up shoes some more. My new design uses different LED strips that boast 144 LEDs per meter, up from the 60 LEDs per meter I was using before. Another benefit is the controller uses only 3-leads instead of four and it's a lot smaller. the controller itself is a mere 32.3mm x 12.1mm x 4.4mm (think about the size of a stick of gum folded in half). My previous controller was as big as a deck of cards, plus an equally sized battery pack. This will run on 2x AAA batteries and uses a standard microUSB connector. The previous setup took me about 4 hours to do a pair of shoes. This setup I can do in about an hour, or a little leess!

But with all that miniaturization comes the draw backs. Instead of the 133 patterns of my previous controller, this one only has 22. But now the bad news. The cost of the previous controller was $12, plus another $20 or so to build a battery pack with charger, and $15 for the lights themselves and $5 worth of adhesive... about $50 in part. This new setup is $15 for the controller, $10 for the battery pack and a whopping $70 for the lights for a total of $100 in parts! Twice the price in parts but a quarter of the labor.

One nice thing though is the lights are brighter, with more density and less wiring involved (no more cords up your pant leg!

For the end buyer on Etsy I think I can get away with selling these for $180 instead of my previous $250 estimate.

Photos with and without flash so you can see just how damn bright these are.___

I've been really sick for the past few days. It started on Friday but by Saturday I was more-or-less bed bound. The 20 minutes I've been up right now is the longest I've been out of bed in days. I'm about to take a first full of ativan and go back to bed. Maybe I'll manage more than 20 minutes of awake tomorrow. Wish me luck.

The shoes are made! One controller can power and control both shoes.  There are two steps left to this endeavor. I need to make the extension cables that run up my pant leg, and I need to make the battery pack to power it all.

The controller can do 133 different patterns which includes simple solid colors. The controller is about the size of a deck of cards, same for the battery pack. So it won't be too bulky to keep in a front pocket.

Once these are complete I'm going to make a video and try selling custom light-up shoes on Etsy. Unfortunately, they'll be pretty expensive since each pair is a custom job. The person will have to send me their shoes and I'll have to make the lights to fit attach to the shoes, make extension cables the right length for their pants, etc. Parts will run about $100 and they take about 3 hours of my time so I'm thinking $250 a pair.more »

Would any of you be willing to pay $250 for a pair of shoes like this? Plus supplying your own shoes that is. A pair of Vans old skool are about $80 on their own.

Sometimes I even impress myself, and this is one of those times. The other day I started a project to make light-up shoes. I got them built and ran into a problem—the PCB would snap and break as the shoes flexed. The solution was to use a different type of light strip that was in this flat tube. It would still be water proof and give it the flexibility to move with the shoe without breaking. I needed to solve another problem... the wires usually come straight off the end of the light strip, but I needed the wires to come off at a 90 degree angle so the wiring can run up my leg and into my pocket where the controller and battery pack will be.

I managed to solder this by hand, these little tiny wires onto a flexible PCB at a nice right angle. Now it's all mounted on the shoe and it works, it lights up, there's enough flex that I'm not worried about the PCB breaking. That's ones... more »

After the second shoe I have to make an extension wire that will run up my pant leg into my pocket. I already built the battery pack. It runs on 3x 14500 3.7V Li-Ion batteries. They look like AA batteries but have 2.5x the voltage, which gets me to 11.1 volts. These lights typically run on 12V but since the run is so short (only 14 segments, and 12V usually will power 50 segments) it should work out fine.

Soon I will have the coolest shoes in school. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to board a plane with them though.___

I'm modifying my home security system with a laser today. Specifically I'm mounting a blue/violet cutting laser on one of my pan+tilt+zoom cameras. The idea being if an intruder steps on my property I can point the camera at them, then hit the button to turn on the laser and burn the person. It won't be lethal but it will be quite a surprise when their clothes catch fire. It may hurt a little as well.

I'm really surprised how cheap these cutting lasers are. I'm starting with a rather low powered one. It'll be powerful enough to light clothes on fire after a few seconds (at least I assume so—it's advertised as being powerful enough to light a cigarette).

Look at all the data I move. 51.96MB/s, wow! My ISP says I've moved 600GB this month. That does look like a real world routable IP, but it's not. I like to use the of't forgot 172.16.0.0/12 private address space.

It's sad, I'd say, to see a species go extinct. If not for human activity, this rhino would still exist. I also think there's merit to the idea that we're in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event. Human caused or not, I don't think this is a problem humanity can solve except by going extinct ourselves. That will inevitably happen.

I buy into the theory that the reason we haven't found intelligent life out there is because either a) we're the first or b) intelligent lifeforms go extinct before they spread about the universe. But I think it's also possible that we are ourselves transplants from another planet, or galaxy.

While obviously dinosaurs never had the chance to evolve into an intelligent enough species to leave Earth I think they could have. I think life crops up all over the universe and lasts for a very short period of time (short in... more »

While obviously dinosaurs never had the chance to evolve into an intelligent enough species to leave Earth I think they could have. I think life crops up all over the universe and lasts for a very short period of time (short in the cosmological sense). Some of that life becomes intelligent enough to leave but either destroys itself or just in the natural order of things goes extinct before it has a chance to spread in an evolved form.

Thinking about this stuff makes me want to watch the original The Time Machine, or Planet of the Apes, or even Idiocracy. I think it's interesting to see how people envision humanity evolving.

I knew Rand Paul was a moron, but this has to be one of the most idiotic, and ironic things ever.... Using a social network to beg for donations to defeat socialism. Is that like bombing for peace? This is what's wrong with libertarians. They only ever think of themselves. No thought is given to anything outside their self-centered narrow worldview.

Making a Murderer

Netflix heavily promoted this ten-part miniseries. I recently watched it and the overwhelming feeling I got was basically that not a single person endeared any sympathy. This about sums up my take on the whole thing. Please discuss.

At the start of the series I felt like “he was totally framed!” by the end, or actually part seven, I felt “who fucking knows what happened”. I lost interest at part seven but watched the rest anyway. I still don’t know if I think he’s guilty or not. What I do know is that the series made me dislike everyone involved from the prosecutor, to Avery, to the judge, to the kid. The only person I didn’t end up disliking was Halbach.

Was Avery framed? Quite possibly. Was Avery guilty? Quite possibly.

And even though I didn’t like the kid, I’m baffled how he was found guilty. He said whatever hethought the polic... more »

And even though I didn’t like the kid, I’m baffled how he was found guilty. He said whatever he thought the police wanted to hear, or what he thought his mom wanted him to say. The fact that they prosecuted and convicted the kid does make me feel like the police had it out for that family and that they may in fact have framed Avery... but then again maybe they framed a guilty man.___

I had been wondering how restaurants were handling this. But how do they choose which water supply they get?

I'm watching the Republican debate without Trump. It's slightly better because they're actually talking about stuff instead of insulting each other. Too bad nothing they have to say is any good.

Disneyland Here We Come!

I finally found a plusser to go to Disneyland with me—for three full days. I'm super excited! I've been wanting to go for quite a while but I couldn't find anyone with free time to go with me. I do enjoy going on my own, but it's more fun with someone else, especially someone who loves Disney as much as I do.

We're going midweek in April, after easter, so the weather will be nice and it won't be too crowded. I'm sure we'll post pictures and stuff.

I expected to be up and to the left more, but this still feels right. I've taken t his exact test a few times in my life and although my results have varied, I'm always in the green.

A politician's religion doesn't influence my support or lack thereof for them. If Obama had been a Muslim I still would have voted for him. If Bernie Sanders turns out to be Muslim I would still vote for him.

Actually I take back the first part of what I said. I would be much more likely to support a candidate who is atheist. If all else being equal between two candidates and one is an atheist and the other is some religion (even if it's the flying spaghetti monster) I'd vote for the atheist.

But other than that, religion does not influence my support or vote.

In January 2015 (just over a year ago) the Michigan state government started shipping purified water to the state office building in Flint Michigan so that state workers wouldn't have to drink the poison tap water. That means that for at least a year (and likely longer governor Snyder knew that the tap water in Flint Michigan was toxic, yet he told residents that it was safe to drink.

Governor Synder doesn't need to resign. He needs to put in jail for the attempted murder of nearly 100,000 people.

#JailSnyderNow

And while Snyder is serving his 100,000 consecutive life sentences, he should only be given Flint tap water to drink and bathe in.

I hear that "tarp man" has been killed. He said he wanted to die, and now he's dead. I wonder if it was a case of suicide by cop. And apparently six or seven of the terrorists/traitors/treasonists/militiamen have been arrested. I've read the phrase "defend a peaceful resolution" a few times. Not clear on what that means exactly, but I think these guys basically wanted to overthrow the federal government. Nothing about their actions was peaceful or a resolution.
