I've been raising my rates at night to be closer to my nearest hotel competitor. Previously the guest would pay $94 and I would clear $82. Tonight the guest paid $146 and I clear $126. By reacting quickly to supply and demand I was able to earn myself an extra $44!.

What the hell is it with torturing animals in the name of religion? Let's face it: there is no "humane" way to kill an animal. But since we're not all going to become vegetarians, the least we can do is try to kill them with as little pain as possible. Except, apparently, if you're a muslim or jew, in which case you want your animal to know you're killing it. I don't understand why people fight for barbaric rituals. Now trying to be a little nicer to the animals you're about to kill is being called anti-Semitism. And Islam is the religion of love, except for, you know, all the violent killing.

A friend came by last night, it was nice. I made us dirty rice for dinner and we sat around the guest house patio talking until the wee hours of the morning. I didn't realize just how nice that guest house is. I wish I could afford to live there myself, but I collect almost $4000 a month in rents so I need to keep it rented.

My friend stayed over in my house, in the guest room last night because it was so late by the time we wrapped up he didn't feel like driving home. He said that bed was the most comfortable sleep he's ever had. I tried sleeping in that bedroom once, but I couldn't do it because it was my grandmother's room. Too many memories in there for me to be able to sleep. Of course, it's not her bed. I got a new mattress and boxspring set when I converted it to an Airbnb. I also put a memory foam topper on it, so it's like sleeping on a cloud. It's... more »

DJ is still on a hunger strike since I changed her diet from two cans of Fancy Feast and unlimited dry food a day to one can of Fancy Feast and unlimited dry food. Last night she was trying to open the cabinet where I keep her canned food. Even if she got the cabinet open, she couldn't have opened the cans.

Last night I mixed cat treats in with her dry food to try to get her to eat it. She managed to pick out all the treats and leave the dry food behind. But I'm not relenting. One can a day!

I went to +SUBWAY Restaurants for dinner tonight about 8:15pm. I asked if they had soup. The sandwich artist said nope. I've gone in several nights around this time and asked for soup, and they never have any... so I asked "Do you ever have soup?" and she tells me that yes, they do, in the mornings. Then she said that people don't usually order soup at night so they don't make any at night.

Well, duh! If you don't make soup people can't order it. I wanted to tell her that, but meh. I wanted their cheddar broccoli soup. I'll just make my own cheddar broccoli soup tomorrow.

This is the state of things in the US now -- public shootings happen every fucking day. When is the GOP going to wake up and allow some sort of gun control? It is to the point where I don't feel safe leaving my house anymore. Fuck the second amendment and fuck anyone who thinks our gun laws shouldn't change. If you think the second amendment is protecting you, you deserve to be shot. My previously nuanced feelings on the matter have changed and I now oppose all gun ownership, full stop. I think everyone's guns should be taken away and destroyed.

I just picked up my prescriptions for next month. Without insurance they would have cost me $437, nearly $15 a day. Most people could not afford that and this is why the ACA exists and is necessary. I don't understand how anyone would want to deny people access to affordable healthcare and medicine.

Please leave a comment if you are against the affordable care act, also known as Obamacare, and explain to me why you think it is I shouldn't be able to afford the medications I need.

For as long as I can remember, Apple has run a back-to-school promotion around this time of year. Many years ago you'd get a significant savings on a Mac, sometimes up to $300 on a top-end model. That discount was on top of the education discount so in some cases students would pay $500 less than the normal price. Of course, for the $500 saved, you can now get a fairly decent Windows laptop, and for about half that you can get a meddling Chromebook or rickety desktop.

Then came the App Store and Apple started offing $100 app store gift cards. That was pretty lame, but at least it was related to the Mac you were buying and saved you some money you may have been planning to spend anyway. I often wondered if Apple even paid developers for purchases made with the back-to-school gift cards.

I often wondered if Apple even paid developers for purchases made with the back-to-school gift cards.

This year Apple is giving Beats headphones when you buy a new Mac. It looks like the customer still has to pay the sales tax on them however. The headphones retail for $200 but as we now know the headphones cost a fraction of that to manufacture. Total cost to Apple must be under $50 and possibly closer to $20. That's a shame. I wouldn't even take the headphones myself, because I'd be on the hook for $16 in sales tax. Beats headphones aren't worth $16 to me.

The other thing wrong with the Beats back-to-school promotion is that the headphones aren't at all related to the Mac you just spent at least a grand on. They don't have any real use in an academic setting. At least with the App Store credit you could buy software you might need for school or in general. And I think if you're a high school or college student who has at least a grand to blow on a computer, you probably already own headphones you like.

If you were in the market for a new Mac, which promo would interest you most? (Apple never offered $150 App Store giftc ard, but I'm using that as an option since it'd be silly to take a $100 gift card instead of $100 cash)___

I just got another person who emailed trying to book tonight because couldn't select it on the calendar since it's already booked for tonight. I've decided from now on to raise my prices after a certain hour. If someone hasn't planned ahead to get a room and is now looking to find an available rental at say 8pm that I should charge them more. If they're looking at my place that late it probably means there isn't much else available. Of course there are probably hotels rooms available but those cost quite a bit more, so all I have to do is still undercut the hotel but not as much as I already do. The hotel closest to me that isn't a dump isn't available tonight (my place was booked a few nights ago so I wouldn't be doing this tonight) so I could have charged a lot more. I think at 8pm I'll check the Ramada for rooms. If there are none my price goes way up. If there are... more »

Surely there is an attorney out there willing to take on this case. Please contact the OP if you can help.

Please help make this go viral..my name is Stephan Harz last year I was a victim of police brutality. I had suffered a spinal cord injury and since had 4 surgeries on my spine..due to the injury to my back, I have had heart issues along with other issues. The police officer that attacked me did so AFTER I made a police report against him an ON the SAME day I had to go to court against him....
My medical costs have been very high and since this has happened...I have not been able to work much due to my back an health problems. I have been trying to find attorney who will help to take on this case but I keep hitting a dead end. I have proof of everything and documents ontop of documents with video/audio.
I hate asking for help..but I need help badly...

This is the woman who canceled on me because of my dirty bed. She doesn't have any reviews yet so it looks like she went to a hotel instead of another Airbnb. That's good. She really shouldn't be staying in other people's homes. Her rate (which included a Friday night) was only $78 a night. That's cheaper than all but the seediest motel in the area. That motel is the one the city gives the homeless and released prisoners vouchers for. Anyway, I wish I had looked at her profile earlier: she's a vegetarian and that'd have told me all I needed to know about her.

I'm sorta tempted to email her with the other guest's review and say "oh so I won't be able to rent it, right?" or whatever. But I don't think Airbnb would like that very much.

A while back I did an "upgrade" in the room by adding a microwave, fridge, coffee machine, HDTV w/ Chromecast & Amazon Prime instant video, aforeposted charging stand, and a computer. All of my reviews since the upgrade have been Five-Stars. Before that my reviews were 50/50 Four-Star/Five-Star. The upgrade definitely paid off. I should hit the 80% mark for Five-Star reviews and get Superhost status on October 1. When that happens, my listings will be given higher priority so I should keep it booked more often. I also get a little badge which may let me charge a little more as well. For what it's worth, most hosts reach Superhost status. Most listings have at least Four-and-a-half-stars.

"Thank you for allowing me to stay at your lovely place. I really appreciate the details in your room, such as the charging cables and the passcode touchpad on the door."

It's really nice to know when the extras I put in the room are appreciated. The room has a charging stand that has cables for iPhone/iPad (lightning) and Androids (micro usb). That's the sort of extra you don't get in a hotel. You're lucky to even find an available wall socket in a hotel.

"The white folks in the south were willing to die and kill to preserve their right to own the black folks."

TO that I'll add that the 13th amendment that abolished slavery, did not abolish slavery as a form of punishment for convicted felons. Is it any wonder in a world of corporate owned, for-profit prisons, that blacks are jailed in hugely disproportionate numbers to whites? Now the white folks use drugs and ridiculous anti-drug laws with harsh minimum sentences to keep black folks enslaved and imprisoned.

A great result of this whole controversy with the queen would be that people wake up and realize that brainwashing kids with religion is wrong. I firmly believe if children weren't exposed to religion that far fewer people would pick up such a nasty habit as adults.

Evicted Friend Update

A few of you may remember I had a friend staying with me who I was trying to help but ultimately had to kick out of my home. I talked to someone who has seen him and they tell me he's homeless, sleeping on the streets with a homeless transvestite and always trying to score meth. That is, when he isn't locked up in the hospital. Don't let TV trick you kiddos. Drugs are bad, mmmk?

Lest you think Apple is any different when it comes to privacy vs the almighty dollar: Apple has patented something (I hesitate to call it an "invention" since this sounds like a troll patent--normal thing done on a computer) that targets advertising based on how much money you have available to you. And that's a pretty private bit of information at that. One of the last things I'd want a company to know about me is how much money I have available to me. Tim Cook is a hypocrite.

Dirty Room Update

The guest who stayed last night left a review already. Mind you, I didn't do any cleaning before he arrived. I only remade the bed and refolded the towels: the woman tore the bed apart (looking for dirt apparently) and unfolded the towels. And his review (emphasis mine):

Holland was very accommodating. Room was very clean with a nice setup. He even has a computer for you to use. Within in a couple of miles of the beach. Has a private entrance which was nice where I could come and leave without disturbing Holland.

"Very clean" indeed! Because a very clean room is what I deliver to each guest who stays here. This guest also had no problem coming and going on his schedule without having to ring my "broken" doorbell. Anyway, now I feel vindicated and I'll stop bitching and moaning about that woman who was so very... more »

I walked to Rite-aid for some late night ice cream. It was about 3am. The woman in line in front of me apparently was using a stolen card. She was on the phone with "her bank" to clear a $218 purchase at rite-aid at 3am. A shopping cart full of sundry items. The cashier never acknowledges me, so obviously no "sorry sir, it'll be just a moment". Just silence. Today has been a day lacking in common courtesy.

My guest for tonight checked in a few hours ago. So far, no complaints about the dirty bed. I emailed the woman asking her to return the key saying she was preventing me from rerenting the room and she had the nerve to say "And no one's willing to stay at a room with a dirty bed, unlike the clean bed promised."

I bet she ended up spending a lot more at a hotel for a bed used by who knows how many thousands of people. I offer amenities you don't get at a hotel, such as: 300mbit internet, free laundry, full use of the kitchen, Amazon Prime streaming, and the best amenity of all: DJ! I'd like to see someone get all that from a hotel in the area for the sam $90 a night I charge. (although, considering how quickly the room rerented (a few hours, with one guest being a same-day check-in) I'm thinking I should raise my rates)

The guest room has already been rerented for all the nights that woman canceled, including tonight. I didn't do any cleaning in the room since she left, I just remade the bed she'd torn apart looking for problems. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the person who has booked tonight will not complain about the dirty bed.

I made bready things. Usually when I make bread I use butter on the top and bottom. Today I used olive oil. And since I was using olive oil I decided to put a little shaved parmasian on top of each one. They are absolutely delicious! I should have made more than six.

The "dirty" bed "no one will rent". Because, you know I go to the trouble of tying a ribbon and a bow around the towels but I don't make sure the bed is actually clean.

This is the booking calendar for my beach cottage. Only five nights not booked this month. I get about $175 a night on average for the cottage, making this month's take more than $4000 after expenses. When I was renting it the traditional way, month-to-month or a lease, I only brought in $1170 a month. My two Airbnb rentals are my only source of income, and so I work very hard on them.

After almost a year doing Airbnb, now having two units, and having hosted more than 30 guests, I've had my first problem guest. I work exceedingly hard to ensure my guests all have a safe, clean, and comfortable stay.

This particular guest could not be bothered to sign in to the Airbnb app to read the information I sent her so she rang my front bell. When I got to the door she informed me that my doorbell didn't work. (apparently if you ring the bell, but don't hear it and someone answers the door anyway, the doorbell is still broken?) After that, I showed her in and she informed me that my boardwalk was dangerous. My boardwalk exceeds safety codes, and is well lit. Of course she couldn't know it was lit since it was day time and the lights are completely invisible when off. She finally got in her room and then rang the bell again (wtf?!) to tell me that the maid forgot to change... more »

After that, I showed her in and she informed me that my boardwalk was dangerous. My boardwalk exceeds safety codes, and is well lit. Of course she couldn't know it was lit since it was day time and the lights are completely invisible when off. She finally got in her room and then rang the bell again (wtf?!) to tell me that the maid forgot to change the sheets on the bed. "I checked the sheets like I do at every hotel and I see a hair! Your maid forgot to change the sheets." Well no, I personally did the laundry which finished just 10 minutes prior to her arriving, and I made the bed myself. The woman had long, unkept hair, that probably did fall off onto the bed, but I know for certain it wasn't there before she arrived. I then told her to contact Airbnb to find accommodations more to her liking.

I do not take the "the customer is always right" approach to customer service. I am not going to try futilely to please someone who cannot be pleased, and this woman is clearly someone who cannot be pleased. She was looking for problems before she ever arrived (she emailed asking "the bathroom has a lock for my privacy, right?"). This was my first clue she would be difficult, and so I made extra sure the room was absolutely perfect, including checking that there wasn't a spec or spot or anything else on the bed, pillows, flour or anywhere else. To have her suggest I offered anything less than the best was an insult and I won't take that.

She sat outside in my beautiful backyard (the joke's on her, because I know the chair she was sitting on had bird shit on it, but hell it's a chair outside under a tree) trying to figure out how to call Airbnb. I went outside to make my flower plot at this point and she asked me if I had their number. I told her I don't have it because I've never had a problem where I needed to speak to them.

Eventually, she left taking the key with her. She hasn't yet canceled through Airbnb. I'm glad to give people a complete refund when they're not satisfied (which happened once, when my water heater broke one morning. The guy didn't even have to ask, I just immediately offered him a full refund for his entire stay). However, without the key I can't rerent it, and so I won't give her any refund for nights I don't have the key.___
