Read Build Connected Mobile Apps in JavaScript with New Salesforce Platform Mobile Services via +Quinton Wall:
"It should be no surprise that mobile has revolutionized the way we live and work. We can check-in, tweet, post, and follow just about anything with the swipe or tap of our finger.
Most recently there has been a resurgence of popularity around JavaScript – fueled by lightweight, mobile, responsive apps, and leading frameworks such as Bootstrap, Backbone.js, AngularJS, jQuery Mobile. Developers are building consumer mobile apps in a completely new way.
However, when you look at business mobile apps, the story is a little different.
Business mobile apps are often written in silos – disconnected from customer data and employees. The result is throw-away apps that don’t engage the customer, or add long term value to the business."

Good article on the importantance of strategy in your nonprofit's communication plan and website design.
"Smart strategy is what truly levels the playing field. Strategy helps you be bigger than you are; to win fights you shouldn’t; to be surprising, refreshing, and inspirational. Strategy gives you an advantage over larger organizations."

Fundraising Experts Wanted
Calling all fundraising and development people. I need your expertise. When viewing a single person/household/account record in your database, what are the heads up, inline analytics that you want to see with a graphical or visual representation? Here are some that I think are interesting, what am I missing?
- Year over year giving history over the past 5 years in a line or bar chart.
- Last 5-8 appeals, and giving by each appeal
- Donation breakdown by restriction or specific designation in a pie chart
What else would you find interesting about a single donor?

Crowdsourcing: More Than Just a Marketing Trick
This article is right on in so many ways. Crowdsourcing is so much more than getting user stories from companies. The underlying technologies for collaborating with customers is building critical mass, thanks to things like Salesforce Customer Portal and related tools from other providers.
It's not just the tool though. The real trick here is operational and attitudinal. Because this is really about making a culture shift towards a more open, more collaborative set of relationships with customers. This new relationship blurs the lines between those inside and outside the firm, and between consumer and producer.
In fact, this isn't really about crowdsourcing at all. It's much bigger than that. It's about blurring organizational boundaries. And the tools we now have are making that possible like never b... more »

Some great advice from +Blakely Graham on building apps for the enterprise... Concentrate on UX, make it easy to buy, don't hide your prices, and provide great support:
Well obviously there's no substitute for building great products. Great products come from great user experience design, so I'd tell you to really focus on getting the experience right. There's a ton of great resources out there to learn about usability and user experience design, so spend some time thinking about how to make your product great. And once you've got a great product, remember that part of the enterprise app revolution is in the purchasing experience. If you're not optimizing that you're missing an opportunity. We've all had experiences dealing with companies that just wanted to extract money from us, I'd urge you not to be one of those. Don't hide your pricing, make sure y... more »

I wanted to share a really amazing example of how +Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is using Salesforce and open APIs to help veterans transition back into civilian life.
In IAVA's Salesforce, they are tracking legislators and legislation to help them better advocate for veterans, and instead of hand entering this fast-changing legislative information, they are able to integrate directly with Sunlight Labs Congress API (http://services.sunlightlabs.com/docs/Sunlight_Congress_API/). This integration makes them more efficient and more effective, with current legislative data that they care to track right at their fingertips and in the context of their other important CRM data.
What's impressive to me about their Salesforce implementation is that they started from a strong grounding in their business needs, took advantage of open APIs to augment their data, and th... more »

Having recently changed jobs from Groundwire, where I was an onsite employee to a remote employee of the +salesforce foundation , I've been thinking a lot about the blurring lines the 'organization'.
Although I have a reasonably nice home office space, I was admittedly nervous about being cooped up all day without the opportunity for in person social interactions. I get a lot from the unplanned work-related and personal interactions, particularly because I lean towards introversion.
As luck would have it, I've signed on to become a member of +Hub Seattle just around the time I was changing jobs. I can't say enough about how enriching the experience has been to be surrounded by other social changers, consultants, customers and partners of my organization in a co-working setting. I find myself collaborating with people around the Hub who have ties to my new orga... more »

It's now been a little more than a day and the Good Business Community is getting some real traction. We're 200 people strong, and so far, we've been focused mostly on connecting with one another. I've been blown away by the caliber of people in this group, a group dedicated to the proposition that business can be more of a force for good in this world.
The goal is to balance a healthy tension between inspiration and staying grounded in the real challenges. No candy-coating or glossing over the hard work that's required to actually balance the needs people, mission and money.

The Foundation is a powerful force in the #NPTech community, boasting more than 16,000 customers on the platform. (VIDEO) Tesla Motors to build national network of free charging stations.
[Read this and watch. This is literally the most important news story of the year, if not the decade or century.]
Tesla Motors co-founder Elon Musk said there are three reasons people don't view electric cars as practical. Then he proceeded to solve each one.
1) "The range is too short." His new super charger will give high-end Teslas a 150 mile trip on a 30 minute charge. "You could drive for three hours, stop at a rest area and recharge for 30 minutes and be ready to go again." There are six stations already deployed in California. "This is not some figment of imagination that may be happening at some point in the future. We built these up in secret and we are unveiling them for the first time tonight...Within two years we will cover almost the entire ... more »

What is the best free screen sharing platform?
With preference placed on screen resolution/clarity and low lag time
GoToMeeting, ReadyTalk and WebEx are relatively expensive for a one person shop, all starting at around $50 per month.
I've used AdobeConnect's free version, which is decent but limited to 3 attendees and I've played around with Google+ for screen sharing minimally, as well as Skype. With all of these, either the resolution has been too low or screen lag too long.
I've heard good things about Join.me but have yet to kick the tires. Are there any other platforms I should explore?

Today is my first day as an independent contractor, and I'm spending it meeting up with some awesome clients and queuing some upcoming work. It's very exciting and I'm also realizing the services that I took for granted as an employee of a consulting organization. I'm in need recommendations for services geared towards independent consultants in the following areas:
* time tracking (leaning towards custom time tracking app in Salesforce)
* project management (leaning towards Teambox)
* Document signatory service (leaning towards Echosign)
* bookkeeping and invoicing (preferably hosted)
One caveat--since my long-term future is up in the air at the moment, I'm not interested in signing any annual service contracts, month to month is essential.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations and please feel free to share this out.

New Adventures
After 4 ½ years at Groundwire, I am stepping down as the Director of Technology Solutions.
When I arrived at Groundwire in 2008, I knew very little about consulting and even less about Salesforce.com. I certainly did not realize I was setting off on the journey of a lifetime that has come to define my professional career. I had no idea that I would work alongside the smartest colleagues and clients that the social change sector has to offer. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn from my coworkers at Groundwire and to serve so many amazing organizations in the community.
As I step back and evaluate what the future may bring, I will be taking on a few short-term consulting gigs. I look forward to continuing my relationship with Groundwire in my new role as an independent contractor and to the new and exciting adventures that I can only hop... more »
