*IR Test II

On a meet with +Ben Locke at Sgwd Gwladus waterfalls, Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales.

Another shot from the IR converted D40x, basically as shot with a slight contrast & S curve adjustment.

IR Conversion Test Shot

A test shot from my newly converted D40x using a piece cut from a Hoya R72 to replace the hot mirror. My sincere thanks to +Julian Provis for his expertise in doing the conversion.
Basically replacing the hot mirror means I can now use the camera as a dedicated IR body and have no need to attached a Infra Red filter in front on the lens meaning easier composition and shutter speeds that enable handheld shots (although I will no doubt be adding the Lee Big Stopper to creat some LE work in the future).
The first version has been channel swapped, whilst the other is a B&W to show the difference in what can achieved.
ISO100, F8, 1/200th sec - handheld.

Bossington Beach
Exmoor National Park, Somerset.

Bossington beach is composed of a steeply shelving shingle bar that has extended across Porlock Bay.

This is one from the archives -  I have previously uploaded a slightly different composition in B&W but I like the colours in this and the more minimal feel without any headland. Slightly longer exposure in this one at 181 seconds to bleach out the sky.

Hoya R72 IR Filter F22 @ 140 seconds.

A new IR shot from last weekend, spent in lovely sunny South Wales with the family. My ten year old son did a pretty good job at staying still for 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Sorry I haven't been around recently, I had a bit of time yesterday to catch up with some of my circles recent stuff - been really busy just doing normal family stuff since my wife started her new job, also trying to catch up on some maintenance stuff around the house.

Llansteffan Castle stands on a hill south of the village, overlooking the Tywi estuary. It was one of a chain of castles the Normans built to guard the river mouths in the early 12th century. But its history as a stronghold goes back much further, with the Norman castle taking advantage... more »

Bluebells

Slight breeze, hence the 10stop trying to capture the movement of the leaves.

This one was taken 2 years ago, the bluebells are just appearing here in The Forest of Dean, hopefully be able to get some new shots soon.

Sorry I haven't been on much the last month or so. My wife has been poorly, now on the mend thankfully, and my creaking old PC has had a re-install after a few weeks of crashes - hopefully now sorted.
So I will try and catch up with everyones streams over the next week or two and hopefully get some images processed to share with you all.

A shot of me standing in a churn - which is a word used in the Forest meaning an underground void caused by the mining of the Iron Ore which would have filled the space left.

Taken a couple of weeks ago on the River Severn with fellow photographer +Ben Locke at one my favourite local locations. It's only 15 minutes away by car and due to the high tidal range (at 14.5 mts/48 feet it has the second highest range in the world) you never get the same experiance twice!

It has been snowing here in The Forest of Dean this afternoon, quite a light but consistent amount and enough for it to stick. Hopefully we should get more overnight meaning that tomorrow may bring some photo oppurtunities as well as some fun for the children, who are excited about buidling snowmen etc.
This one is from a couple of years ago and was taken not far from where I live.

Burnham Lighthouse

Taken in appalling conditions at the weekend on a trip with fellow photographer +Ben Locke. It was very windy, hence low angle to shot (I am sure the tripod would have blown over had it been any higher), with severe gusts and sporadic drizzle. I think our outings may involve some sort of atmospheric change that renders all weather forecasts of bright sunny spells & nice sunsets as completely wrong! Be warned if you plan to meet us at the next outing :-)

Over the last three days I've posted three circles of 500 each of all of the photographers that I'm currently following on Google+. For the most part these are active, engaged photographes on Google+ and represent some of the people that you may want to get to know if you want to participate more in the Photo Community that has emerged on Google+.

The Google+ Photography Community is the most active, engaged, positive group of photographers I've ever seen anywhere on the web. I'm constantly blown away and humbled by the quality of the work that people post there day in and day out. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend, hopefully going on a shoot to Somerset later today with +Julian Provis & +Ben Locke , the weather doesn't look to good at the moment, hopefully it may clear up.

This was shot about 20 minutes before sunrise, taken from Pendennis Point looking over towards St Anthony Head lighthouse, as a fishing boat passes Black Rock heading out into the bay.

Of all the Museum's galleries, the Minerals gallery most faithfully retains Alfred Waterhouse's original architectural vision. The original oak cabinets dating back to 1881 allow an uninterrupted view of the finely decorated square columns along the length of the gallery, and provide an airy display area to explore the mineral specimens.

Feeling Old? Well not as old as this ammonite, which could be anything between 65-240 million years old.
Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossil, possessing the typical ribbed spiral-form shell. They became extinct along with the dinosaurs. The name 'ammonite' (usually lower-case) originates from the Greek Ram-horned god called Ammon. Ammonites belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus.
Taken last night on a fairly cold, but, rewarding trip to the River Severn a few miles from where I live - one of my favourite local spots for sunsets.

Natural History Museum
Kensington, London.

The Natural History Museum is one of three large museums on Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London, England (the others are the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum).
Originating from collections within the British Museum, some of which date back to 1756, the landmark Alfred Waterhouse building, shown in the image, was built between 1873-1880. The new museum opened in 1881, although the move from the old museum was not fully completed until 1883.
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 70 million items within five main collections: Botany, Entomology, Mineralogy, Palaeontology and Zoology. The museum is a world-renowned centre of research, specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. This is one of the bunkering vessels that runs out of Falmouth Harbour on it's way to fuel a waiting ship out in the bay as the sun starts to rise over Carricknath Point.

Missed out on a meet today with +Ben Locke & +Chris Day in the Brecon Beacons - haven't felt well for the last couple of days, so keep an eye on their streams for some shots from today.

Cefn Coed
Nr Crynant, South Wales.

Located near the village of Crynant in the Dulais Valley five miles north of Neath, Cefn Coed Colliery was once the deepest anthracite coal mine in the world - the best coal came from the deepest seam called Big Vein, broken into at a depth of 750 yards.
At such depths and with frequent mining accidents due to methane gas and roof falls, it was one of the most dangerous coalmines in Wales, gaining the nickname ‘The Slaughterhouse’.
The site is now run as a museum and is well worth a look if you are ever in the area.

The Darwin Centre Cocoon
Natural History Museum, Kensington, London.

Happy New Year to all. We had a couple of days away in London between Christmas and the New Year which our children thoroughly enjoyed - I hope you all had a great festive season.

The £78m building, opened in 2009, was designed by C F Moller Architects, and built by HBG Construction, is an eight-storey "Cocoon", encased within a glass atrium.
The temperature-controlled Cocoon houses 20 million of the museum's 34 million plant and insect specimens, and laboratories for up to 200 researchers.

Buried within more than 3km of cabinets are rare gems collected by Charles Darwin on the voyage of the Beagle, and by Sir Joseph Banks, who accompanied Captain James Cook on his first great expedition.

From 1953 to c.1957-1960 the Carboniferous Pennant Sandstone was quarried from vast underground workings.

Dan yr Ogof

Situated at the head of the Swansea Valley, Dan yr Ogof is one of the finest and best preserved caves in South Wales. Scheduled as a National Nature Reserve, the cave is afforded a special level of protection under the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981).
The first section of the cave is open to the public and is one of Wales' most popular tourist attractions - also recently voted "Britain's finest natural wonder". Beyond lie at least 17km of passage under the Black Mountain, much of it large and superbly decorated.
This was taken a couple of years ago whilst on holiday in Wales and shows my wife and children inside the cave complex open to the public.Uploaded towards #SquareSunday curated by +Matt Soave.

Taken on a recent(ish) meet with +Ben Locke at Garden Cliff on the banks of the Severn. I didn't feel really in the groove that night and wasn't overly impressed with what I got when I reviewed the images once home. However I sometimes find that an image grows on me over time - this was processed the day after the shoot and has been sitting on my hard drive in my "working" folder.I looked at it again yesterday and thought yep..so here it is with a few final tweaks.
Hope you are all having a great weekend - we had our first bit of snow here overnight, mostly slush by morning, but the kids had fun throwing a few snowballs around.

Occasionally whilst shooting long exposures you'll get a shot you weren't quite expecting.
This is one of those.
I like shots into the sun. But to get a decent long exposure shot into the sun is, to be honest, a hit and miss affair (with me anyway). The movement of the sun and the glare you normally get render the resultant image useless.
Don't get me wrong, this shot is far from perfect, but.....I quite like it. The colour of the sea has not been enhanced, sometimes with long exposures, colours get magnified, so much so that I have to tone them down....in this I like the way the light and the long exposure have come together to give the lovely blue tone to the water.
