We live in colonies - 2

Another different view of more of the fungi I found on a rotting stump of a tree in a Blue Mountains valley. You can clearly see the gills on the flared part of the stem of the stalked cups. Interesting looking lichens and mosses on that tree too.

We live in colonies

During our tiring climb back out of the Blue Mountain valley last weekend, I spied a large "colony" of fungi quite a bit off the track and down the hillside. Was a bit dicey going there as it was heavily overgrown but went regardless. It was worth it. There was a dead tree (half a tree, really) still in the ground but it was full of a large number of fungi. They looked a bit like Oyster Mushrooms but were obviously not those. I can only narrow it down to the Tricholomataceae family of the Agaricales order (gilled mushrooms), and that's obviously too broad. Drosophila evidently liked them as there were quite a few fruit flies on the mushrooms (you can see a few in the image).

Little purple beauty

I came across these little purple flowers in heath not far from West Head Road in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, in the north of Sydney. Quite tiny, they're less than 1 cm in diameter. They were absolutely swarming with little bugs, and you can see a couple of them here, but I couldn't see many of them with the naked eye but saw them once I looked at the photos on the computer. I couldn't find ID for the flowers but they were in the same area as lots of Pink Spider Flowers and Tea-tree flowers.

Tell me who you are

I found this "thing" sitting on the bagged wall of our deck. It's a small little thing, perhaps about 8mm in length. It stayed there for quite a while, not batting a metaphorical eyelid while I photographed it from all sides, with one flash, and then with two, or made three focus stack sequences... On the computer later, I could see that there were small movements but wasn't visible with the naked eye at the time.

Now, what is it? The wings are like those of a soldier fly (family Stratiomyiidae), but the eyes and antennae don't appear to be those of a fly.

Reach for the sky

We came across quite a few of these tall guys during our bushwalk in the Blue Mountains on Sunday. This is a very old Turpentine tree (Syncarpia glomulifera). They are native to parts of New South Wales and Queensland, and can live as long as 500 years. There is a distinct smell of turpentine when you crush the leaves, hence the name.

We came across this one while descending into the valley, in the region where the wet sclerophyll forest meets the temperate rainforest. This was a huge tree, probably about 60m tall and that base was so wide it would probably take 8-9 people standing in a line next to each other to obscure the base. This is not the whole tree - its height wouldn't fit even though this was a wide angle lens.

A million pointed fingers

Don't be so quick to judge
Don't accuse because you feel you must

A very close look at another Banksia - a Banksia integrifolia this time, with the remnants of a poor insect, perhaps an unfortunate ant, hanging from its styles. Sunlight streams through the outstretched pointing fingers, backlighting the flowers against a dark, green background.

There is still a sun!

The sun breaks through and shines into the depths of dense tree covered temperate rainforest. Had a most magical bushwalk today. Starting from one of the towns in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, we walked the tracks meandering down the steep hillsides to the bottom of the water filled valleys between the mountains. We walked through wet sclerophyll forest into temperate rainforest. In most places, little light reaches where we were walking, trees tower over our head desperately reaching for that elusive sunlight, thick vines trailing from the heights of those trees down to the fern filled undergrowth. At this spot, the afternoon sun broke through and shone at the spot where we were in the middle of a creek, bringing cheer to the gloom!

Radioactive Saltie?

A Saltie on an outdoor wall. The flash bounced off the white wall and besides the front lighting, also backlit the Saltie, making its limbs almost translucent and added a glow near its body.

Yoo hoo! Look at me

I missed seeing this little mushroom on the way out during my bushwalk last weekend but spotted it on the way back. It was nestled under a tree root right in the middle of the bush track. A small little thing, it was probably about 3 cm in size.

Give me five

This little beautiful flower is from the Pink Wax Flower plant (Eriostemon australasius). It is quite commonly found in heathland and dry sclerophyll forest in New South Wales and Queensland, along the east coast of Australia. The plant is from the Rutaceae (citrus) family, and puts on spectacular wildflower displays in late winter and early spring. Now that's where there is a problem. This is autumn and yet, I find this flowering all over. Somethin's not a'right.

The flower is very similar to the Boronia from the same family. However, Boronia has 4 petals whereas Eriostemon has five petals. It is a little flower - this one was just under 2cm across.

And they say caterpillars are slow

Try photographing one when it doesn't want to stop walking! I chased this one for quite a while but it wouldn't stop moving. I slipped a sheet of paper under it and it stopped for a short while - long enough to fire off several frames for focus stacking. I later noticed that even though it was stationary, its last pair of prolegs kept flicking in and out and you can see the motion visible there. The paper also served to highlight it as the concrete it was on earlier was close to it in colour.

Let me be. I'll be OK

I came across this bee walking fast in the sand on a fire trail in the bush. I wondered if it was injured and attempted to entice it on to a leaf to move it to the side of the trail so it wouldn't get run over in case someone else came by but it surprised me by flying but just a little and came down again. Was such a task trying to photograph it because it wouldn't stand still. After so many blurred photos, it stopped for a second because my flash was in its path and I got this shot, and even here its wing got cut off a bit in the photo.

You challenging me to a duel, mate?

A Spider Wasp (Pompilidae family, probably Priocnemis bicolor), sitting on a flower and facing me down. These wasps hunt spiders larger than themselves like Huntsman and Wolf Spiders and put one paralysed spider into each cell of their nest. They have a very powerful and painful sting (you see why I'm relatively far away? ;)) with which they paralyse their prey. As I came closer, it just sat there and flicked its wings ominously!

Come closer! I dare you!

I came across four of these female Golden Orb Weavers with their webs very close to each other and almost parallel. Together, their webs completely covered the space between two trees in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney. I had to take this handheld (camera in one hand and flash in the other) as there was no place to put a tripod down because of the webs. Didn't get the quality of macro I wanted because of the conditions - I couldn't get the camera or flash close enough, and the webs overlapped so had to shoot through them. I kept a respectful distance from them, especially this one, because including legs it was a bit larger than the size of my palm.

Look Ma, no hands!

I had to go on all fours to get under this tree that had fallen across this stretch of bush track. Made it very difficult because that at stretch, there was a narrow rocky pass which was the only way through and this tree was right across it. While under the tree, I noticed that the underside had graceful lacy fungi growing hanging down from the trunk. A very soft floppy fungus, growing in clumps like this on the wood. Had to lie down on the rocks to shoot straight up. No idea of ID.

Patience pays

This unique orchid was bought at a garage sale many years ago (seven years, I think) and has bloomed for the first time ever! Each of those pretty pink and blue flowers is quite small, about 2cm in length. Don't know what it is called.

This spider is pink

The Pink Spider Flower (Grevillea sericea) is one of five Grevillias commonly known as Spider Flowers. This is actually not a single flower but an inflorescence of many flowers. This was about 3cm across. I found them flowering very widely while on a bush walk a couple of weeks ago. A bit surprised to see them as they normally flower in Winter through to early Spring (July - September), I thought. They are native to the Sydney region and very popular with honeyeater birds seeking nectar.

Mushroom cloud

This was a somewhat unusual find, at least for me. I came across what looked like a mushroom in the middle of a little frequented bush track. I lightly touched it with my boot to see whether it was hard or soft when it suddenly exploded in a cloud of yellow spores, almost filling the air just above it, also covering the front of my boot with yellow. There was quite a breeze at the time so the spores got spread far and wide. Pretty efficient mechanism, I would say! So, when I came across another one soon after, I photographed it. There was no room to get low and photograph it from the side so had to be content with a shot from the top.

Capture the flag

I always treasure these delightful flowers because I don't encounter them very often, plus they're delicate pretty, little things close to the ground. This is the Native Iris, also called the Silky Purple Flag (Patersonia sericea)), found across Eastern Australia. The flower is about 4 cm in diameter. I always stop and admire them when I encounter them on my bushwalks, and if I have to photograph them, it must be on my outward journey, not on the way back, because they live less than a day, opening only on a sunny day, and by late afternoon have started closing, never to reopen. The great thing is that all the flowers in the same area all open on the same day, however few there may be, and add wonderful spots of beautiful purple to the forest.

The purpose of my existence

Episode 9 of the Banksia series. View full screen for the detail. This is the final image in this series. This is what the flower spike of the Banksia ericifolia looks like after it dries up while still on the tree/shrub. Even though there were so many flowers on the spike, only a few form fruits. You can see the fruits on the bottom half of the spike. These fruits are woody follicles embedded in the rachis (or spike) of the inflorescence. The fruits contain the seeds that will enable this plant to propagate. The fruit is like a bivalve that splits open to release one or two seeds. The wonderful thing is that in many cases these fruits open only when there is a bushfire (which is a pretty regular occurrence), releasing the seed which then falls to the ground and germinates.

Episode 7 of the Banksia series. Here we see just one pair of styles of a single flower of the Banksia ericifolia inflorescence, lit up by a snooted speedlight, shining like neon tubes. You can see the symmetry, with the styles perfectly turned in opposite directions, yet their stigmas (seen dark here) face the same direction.

Ever get the feeling you are being watched?

Episode 6 of the Banksia series. This is a view of the flowers of the Banksia ericifolia close to the spike (or axis, named a rachis), where you can see the floral structure, including the styles and stigmas. A thing I noted is that even though the inflorescence appears red/orange overall, close to the spike most things are golden. You can see that the styles turn red only where the 'hook' forms, which is the topmost visible point. You can also see that there's always a pair of flowers arising from the axil of a common diamond-shaped bract. What's fascinating is that these floral structures are packed together in a regular grid, perfectly symmetrical.

Colourful characters now

Time to have a look at the "colony" of larvae on our Oriental Lilies. They really develop quite rapidly in the space of a week! Last week, they were brown, had a studded neck band, and lighter studded rings on the body, and were 1 cm long. They've acquired some colour now, with a dark green/black background, with thinner white longitudinal stripes interspersed with broader yellow stripes. The studded neck band is black now and the 'studs' are less visible on this band as well as the other rings. They've put in a burst of growth and are 2.5 cm long now, long enough that I couldn't use extension tubes on my macro lens this time.

That green stuff appears to be their waste, and they're sure been eating a lot. Just small parts of the leaves are left now, with the majority having been worn tissue thin and are yellowed. The... more »

Episode 3 in the Banksia series. Here you can see the base of the Banksia ericifolia flower spike or infloresence, showing the bases of the individual flowers and the hooked styles. The green shaft is the spike itself, off which all the flowers emanate. The point of attachment of the flower spike to the branch is just out of frame to lower right. The spike is at an angle to the branch, as the spike must be vertical but the branch is not necessarily horizontal.

Jumping through hoops

I had posted a photograph of a whole Banksia ericifolia flower spike yesterday (https://plus.google.com/u/0/111760994834428090634/posts/WFe6f2v5uwD). The next image featuring the Banksia shows the flower spike at an angle. As this is a macro and the DOF is very narrow, showing this depth in focus requires a focus stack. This is a focus stack of 30 frames, taken sheltered from the rain (was a drizzle at the time). You can see a couple of water drops that sneaked in anyway! The hoops (the hooked styles) are prominently featured here.

Hooked you in style

This exquisite flower spike, or infloresence, is of the Heath-leaved Banksia (Banksia ericifolia). These are flowering right now in Autumn and on my bushwalks, the heath is ablaze with the orange, red and yellow tones of these flowers. Each spike, which grows vertically, contains hundreds of flowers, each with the characteristic hooked style that you will be able to see from the image. This plant attracts plenty of honey-eating birds such as Rainbow Lorikeets, Noisy Miners, Eastern Spinebills and New England Honeyeaters, as well as a large number of pollinators like bees.

I spent around an hour shooting this flower spike from several angles and perspectives, including focus stacks, and will post those as I process them, which is why I created this album just for the Banksia.
