JONATHAN CHRISTOPHER KENDALL (1962-2013)
With the greatest of sorrow I, +su ann lim , have to inform you that Jonathan Christopher Kendall, my fiancé and love of my life, died suddenly last night on 15 June 2013. Despite the incredible efforts of our friends +Suzanne Jacob +Gaynal Brierley , paramedics and ambulance personnel he could not be revived.
Jonathan lived as he believed, telling it like it is, with wit and humour, enjoying life to the hilt, with honour, directness and compassion. I was incredibly blessed to be the recipient of his immense love, and as each other's beloved, to share unbelievable happiness for too short a time. Jonathan, I LOVE YOU with all my heart and miss you desperately.

A few lessons from 5 days with no phone...
Last Thursday I left my Nexus 4 on a bus, and thanks to the awesome Google transportation team I got it back today. But not without learning a few lessons:
- Brief periods of disconnecting are awesome: it's incredibly relaxing to have no notifications to worry about. While I'll no longer have the wonderful excuse of "I lost my phone," I do plan on turning it off for long stretches on a regular basis.
- Any device-dedicated messaging service is awful: Text messaging is terrible, but still the primary form of communication among people my age. No phone = no texts, and that's ridiculous. I'm exclusively giving out my Google Voice number starting today.
- The 3-5 inch form factor is bad at everything : My Glass is perfect for quick texts/calls, my Nexus 7 is perfect for movies, music, ga... more »

So Ubuntu has never worked with my laptop display, only on external monitors. Which wasn't an issue at school, as I only use my external monitor. But now I don't have one, so I spent the last hour trying to figure out why the display was black. It wasn't the display drivers, or the display settings, or any number of things I tried. It turns out that for my model of laptop, Ubuntu enjoys turning the screen brightness to zero upon booting up.
You have got to be kidding me.
