dear Hosting Team and other fans of collective intelligence & wisdom,

You may wonder why you haven't heard from me since a while. Here's the reason. I'm dealing with challenging health conditions that oblige me to have more rest and cut back on the time I'm spending on all projects. So, until I get stronger, I won't be able to as actively host and participate in this community as I'd like to.

The good side of this news is that it may inspire new hosts/facilitators/moderators to step forward and engage more with serving the evolution of the community, or we become truly self-organizing. The latter means that besides using this community space as a simple bulletin board, with the occasional random posting, no collective action will occur unless YOU care for, initiate and support it.

A society governed by the people's wisdom...
Last weekend I joined a small group exploring the idea that society could have the capacity to generate "public wisdom" and that we could empower that wisdom to support wiser public policy and popular behavior.
Because many people don't know what we mean by "public wisdom", we clarified that, for the purposes of this inquiry,
the word "public" means that
- the wisdom is generated by ordinary people
- in groups who embody the diversity of their communities
- for the guidance of officials and the citizenry (the whole public)
- regarding public affairs and the concerns of the citizenry
- in forms that are known about and readily accessible to everyone.
and the word "wisdom" means, simply,
- taking into account what needs to be taken intoaccount... more »

The G+ Flash Mob Riff

In the way Google+ has of creating serendipity and then amplifying it a post I wrote at the encouragement of +Bill Gassett was picked up by +Martin W. Smith whom I met through +Mark Traphagen and generously reshared by +Vic Gundotra and here, Mark adds the final touch to it with his contribution.

None of us would have known each other were it not for the ability G+ has of creating symmetrical relationships with a mutual benefit coefficient as standard. None of this would have been even remotely possible without the generosity of every participant who encourages, contributes, comments and reshares.

Collectively and with relatively little effort we created a post of lasting value that can impact upon the professional lives of many.

If anyone ever needed proof that the world has changed. This is it.

The http://peeragogy.org/resources/technologies/ section of the Handbook is indeed a marvelous resource! We should draw on it in the CIEL design, too. So, CIEL friends please look it up to see what we can learn from Peeragogy.

+Charlotte Pierce wrotte:

"How about a practical problem, like how to get reliable internet service throughout Africa so the vast reservoir of intelligence and wisdom there can be tapped?"

Dear Charlotte, would that be a project that you personally feel energy for and want to dedicate some and attention to? The reason I'm asking because I think the world doesn't lack great ideas for possible projects but enough people who want to commit to work on them, particularly, when a challenge is as complex as the one you named.

So if it was a project that you would want to get involved with and invite others in the community to develop a CICW approach to it, then a good place to start could be mapping the work  of the dozens or so NGOs and international government agencies, what they are missing and what is needed to accelerate it.

What do you think?

2013-02-25 07:59:46 (10 comments, 0 reshares, 5 +1s)

+Joe Corneli asked:
what kind of experiments does the Collective Intelligence & Wisdom group want to try?

Joe, unlike Peeragogy, CICW didn't come together around a project, but a very loosely interpreted and shared interest around the memes in the name of the network. So there simply is not a CICW group with a common identity and volition to try certain kind of projects.

The hosting team came together in our last hangout around suggesting this as a shared focus for the community: "Becoming a healthy, vibrant, co-creative self-organizing community of CICW interest, which makes a positive difference for the world."

Now, I guess our challenge is to discover how we can test and build alignment around that proposal, using what means and processes, before we can develop a group intention for any particular experiments.

The following design of this team hangout grew out from numerous exchanges among members of the community's hosting team.  The current structuring of our numerous areas of interest into the agenda sketched out below  is my suggestion.

Hosting Team hangout, 23-24 February, suggested design

date and time

Dan: Sunday, 7 - 8:30 am (Brisbane)
John: Sunday, 10 -11:30 am (Auckland)
Robert: Saturday, 4 - 5:30 pm (Warerloo)
George: Saturday, 9 - 10:30 pm (London)

overall Purpose

To establish a shared focus and common priorities of the CICW community hosting team

expected Outcomes

Agreements about 5 areas of issues:

1. What we see as a the overall purpose of the hosting team?

Roles and accountabilities

Roles in a self-organizing team or community are general areas of one's contribution, which also represent a creative or otherwise rewarding potential for the person who wants to hold that role. A person can have more than one role, and a role can be held by more than person. Roles can be chosen on a time-bound or ongoing basis.

An accountability is a gift to the community, offering my response-ability for a specific result within a time frame specified by me, thus letting my team mates know what they can count on me for.

Roles and accountabilities are the self-organizing antidote to the command-and-control way of coordinating group action. Without them no effective, freedom-based coordination of multiplayer, complex action is possible. Let's think about and share what roles and accountabilities do we want to offer to the CICW... more »

Collective Intelligence? Tired! — Connective Intelligence? Wired!

+Golda Dennis wrote, "it is important what each of us contribute to the "collective intelligence"...and that's the big picture!
and +John Kellden replied, perfect! Each one's unique contribution adds vaue to the collective intelligence!

What is slightly misleading about those statements is an "additive" overtone of CI that could be captured with the "two minds are better then one." Well, it is not necessarily so. If we just add our bits of knowledge to a common pool, it doesn't necessarily makes us more co-intelligent. In contrast to the additive, "pooled" CI, I started talking about "connected" intelligence that Alia also termed as "emergent CI" and characterized as "trans-human".See: ht... more »

What is a community host?

I asked +John Graves whether he would be interested to join our team of the hosts of this community? In spite his busyness with his PhD work, he said yes, and asked "if there is anything in particular you would expect me to 'moderate'."

To tap into the collective intelligence of what is needed, this moment, I asked that question from my fellow community hosts. +Robert Best replied and what follows is a combination of what emerged from the sensing by both of us of hosting tasks that need to be attended. I'm posting it here, thinking that it may serve other community members too who would want to know what it takes to be a community host/moderator.

Value Networks & Value Network Analysis

There are 4 well-known models of value networks developed in the past 15 years, used in traditional  and less traditional organizations. Some of them are supported by software.

I believe what Metamaps and Sensorica are trying to accomplish is more radical, i.e. going to the roots of creating healthy, co-productive relationships, yet, there might be something to learn from the older models of Value Networks

neurons that fire together, wire together
that's how they/we learn language and form memories

in "associative learning" simultaneous activation of cells leads to pronounced increases in synaptic strength between those cells... any two cells or systems of cells that are repeatedly active at the same time will tend to become 'associated', so that activity in one facilitates activity in the other. CICW Community Content Curation, draft 0.02

This version of the roadmap was developed by +Robert Best and George Pór, members of the CICW hosting and curation team.  The team also includes +Dan R.D.  and +Ferananda Ibarra, who will hopefully comment on the draft here.
