Vũ Phá0So, someone asked me if when would i share a themed circle. I share circles of mixes of different people because i think it brings diversity of the circle.Well people, should i share a themed circle? Well if i would, it would be a different circle though, and it would be less frequent than my other two circles.. (this circle and the snowball one)Well circle Yulia seems kind since she did not remove any people this time, instead she added some!So everyone, this circle obviously contains people. They seem to be pretty normal perhaps.  Hahaha! :-P.Well they engage with people and they have great content in their profiles. Some in here are photographers, philosophers, humorists and everything nice! These guys are not only suggested by me but also suggested by others. So yea, i believe it's a pretty great mix... :-DNote: If ever you want to suggest someone to be included in the future editions of this circle, just tag them in the comments!2014-02-06 16:37:31501537
Gideon Rosenblatt38,394The People I Keep a Closest Eye OnThis is a small circle of 50 people and pages that have my closest attention here on Google+. Some are well-known and have many followers, some do not. All are interesting people (or in a few cases pages) and almost all are quite active here. I am not including myself. This is purely to help you find some interesting new people and pages - especially if you're just getting started here and want some interesting stuff in your stream.  #circleshare  2014-02-02 01:06:385019731

It is rare that a news article renders me momentarily speechless, sadly, this piece takes the dubious honour for 2013. Just the concept is sickening. A moment’s reflection leaves little hope for a sustainable future. How did we come to this sorry pass?

But wait. Maybe Pandora closed the lid in time. Read the article. Look at the disparate groups co-operating on all sides of the political, religious, equality, and freedom debates. Is it possible that we need such malignant idiocy to incite anger and foster reconciliation? Sad if so, but better this than the alternative.

Where is there a good tornado to be found when one is required? Preferably one that deposits itscap... more »

Dystopia or Utopia?—A Future Retrospective
This seems to be a perfect post for #caturday. I particularly like the line some thirty seconds into the video: “I lost eleven years of my life to the Internet... Looking at pictures of cats.”  Those viewers in the UK will appreciate the excellent imagery associated with the destruction of the ‘National Grid’. This seems to be perfectly accurate should Cameron & Co., be allowed to continue in office beyond the next election.

Looking at pictures of cats.”  Those viewers in the UK will appreciate the excellent imagery associated with the destruction of the ‘National Grid’. This seems to be perfectly accurate should Cameron & Co., be allowed to continue in office beyond the next election.

Coastal Contrasts
I am fortunate to live in a particularly beautiful part of coastal California, and to 'commute' to an equally attractive part of North Wales, equidistant from our UK development office and Dublin HQ.

Other than the rain—too much in Wales, too little in CA—the weather, even down to the coastal fog, is really quite similar. The variations provide manifold photographic opportunities. Unfortunately, they are of little value without a camera in hand. Thinks...

Note to Self: Remember to take camera when traveling... Then use it!

Peeking Over the Parapet
It's a weak excuse for such a long absence I know. However, it's the only one I have, and it does have the benefit of being accurate. I've been a trifle busy.

OK, maybe the reason is accurate, the excuse... Well, there is none really—there's always time to engage. It's overcoming inertia that's problematic, and building momentum that takes time.

Yes, I'm embarrassed to see that my last post was eight months ago. Worse, that I predicted I would be engaging more regularly. Ho hum. I do gain some comfort from the fact that my primary passion outside of work has suffered too. Until this last week-end I'd only played with my photography toys twice since September. This has to stop.

So, let me start by posting a few pix. I'll start with Simon to make sense of the headline here. Assuming that I can build, and then maintain, momentum I'll post some more. Hopefully, this will encourage me to take some much-needed time off with my cameras and get back to sharing.

PS: Oh yes, for those who remember me from the dim distant past, perhaps I should mention what's been so important that it's kept me away. Work!

Now, although from the early G+ days I have kept my business life separated from my engagement here, the exquisite irony behind my absence deserves an explanation... I've been working with a great team at building an advanced social media engagement, analysis, monitoring, and education ecosystem designed to increase social impact while minimizing time spent. As I say, there's irony!

The past eight months have been spent shuttling between Silicon Valley, London, Manchester, and the +Scredible HQ in Dublin, pulling the pieces together and... Well, and having fun.

An Angel—Or a Peculiar Bird?
Just over the 'hill' and up the coast from the adobe Mudd abode is the pristine coastline surrounding Davenport, CA. Although it can be a challenge to get to the beaches, the cliffs provide some great opportunities for candid bird shots.

These pelican shots are distinguished by the light as the sun disappeared behind an offshore fog layer—lighting the cliffs and beaches, but leaving the ocean in shadow. The individual shown as the cover of this album appears to be trying to prove its one-wing prowess and/or emulating an angel.

"We have got a CIA station just up the road – the consulate here in Hong Kong – and I am sure they are going to be busy for the next week. And that is a concern I will live with for the rest of my life, however long that happens to be."

Having watched the Obama administration prosecute whistleblowers at a historically unprecedented rate, he fully expects the US government to attempt to use all its weight to punish him. "I am not afraid," he said calmly, "because this is the choice I've made."

Visa Card Limits—Q: When is $500,000 Too Low?

There was a short, succinct, and on point post by +Steve Faktor yesterday on the inequities of the HB-1 visa and the impact on average earnings in the tech sector– http://goo.gl/ivNnP. Steve makes an excellent job of linking the tax code, lobbying interests, and the resultant downward spiral’s effect on education, opportunity, and equity. The post brought to mind the EB-5—a topic upon which I have written before but is worth airing again.

The NBC article linked here provides a good summary of the basis for the EB-5. The NBC article linked here provides a good summary of the basis for the EB-5. Also, it makes the point that there are those who, as I, believe the $500,000 investment requirement to be vastly too low. However, the article’s focus is not on the key danger nor the inequity—the types of job being created for those who are already U.S. citizens. Low wage jobs—typically minimum wage.

In this respect the EB-5 simply sets up the working-class American population as a mirror of those low-wage workers in offshore nations where the ratio of income to cost-of-living is little different. The only difference, in fact, being that the jobs created—hospitality and construction workers—cannot be taken offshore.

The solution is obvious and simple. As Steve mentions in his LinkedIn article, this is something that could be proposed by the team locked in the room with the sandwiches and beverages. Indeed, it would take them all of five minutes before they moved on to the tax code. Raise the limit to $5MM. Exclude all service industries and provide a discount or faster path to citizenship if tech or health related. Cut the red tape. Simple. Of course, the interest’s of the lobbyists’ clients won’t allow it to happen. Sad. ___

Commercial Communities Come of Age—Again
Although long, +Thomas Power's post shared here is worth taking the time to read. Of course, one could always wait for the book that would result from Thomas answering his questions with a couple of paragraphs each, and adding backstories and/or predictions to support his multiple statements. This is where you come in. Comments, suggestions and answers on Thomas’ OP—http://goo.gl/4e0Tn—will provide the necessary material for the book in no time.

As I commented on the original, for my part, I see the community and transaction elements merging—and quickly. We just need an effective barter platform and we’re back to a future defined by the past. As a metaphor, I immediately think of the wool trade in a market town on the edge of the English Cotswolds in the 17th Century.

+Google evolving from Transaction Company to Community Company

When you study the journey Google have embarked upon you can see Google are evolving from a transaction company based on search and advertising to a community company based on contribution and engagement. The Google-Motorola hardware is designed to make it easier to engage in that emerging community company.

This evolution Google call Plus (+) as in +Google+ launched June 28th 2011.

Google 1.0 or pre-Plus was 1998-2011. That’s thirteen years. Six years to build an internet business model and a further seven years to optimize it.

In the 1.0 period I am excluding the Orkut, GoogleSocial and Buzz experiments. All of these were attempts by Google over seven years 2004-2011 to appreciate and respect the concept of a community company. Even great companies of our age like Google may find it difficult to build a community company.

Those seven years 2004-2011 were critical to Google’s own development. I suspect most organizations may have to go through a similar experimental period as transaction people bump into and sometimes conflict with community people. We all know conflict (while painful) leads to growth. We also know some people inside Google love Plus while others remain unsure, sitting on the fence. The fence sitters are likely the transaction people (show me the money). Community is by no means obvious behavior. Community behaviour is the inverse of transaction behavior.

Google the community company thus begun in 2011. Google 2.0 or Plus.
I really like the concept of plus (+) and in time I think other companies will call their own evolution from transaction company to community company “plus” also.

All companies, governments, educational establishments and municipals will evolve communities as extensions to their brand and wider reach of their intention and purpose.

Community company’s do not replace transaction company’s.

Community company’s enhance and extend transaction company’s.

There might be a perception in the market that a community company is somehow non-financial or flakey or not real and only real transaction company’s make money. This is not the case. A community company is a complementary extension to a transaction company. A community company may in time be worth more in the marketplace than the transaction company that birthed it. I think we may even see community company’s acquiring their transaction company parents. That in itself is a weird sentence to write but I know it is a coming. It is a sense I have.

Transaction companies have a product that you pay for before consuming.

Community companies have a product that you consume first and pay for later (in ways various).

Transaction company’s are closed selective controlling (CSC).

Community company’s are open random supportive (ORS).

You can talk more on ORS in the leadors community:

https://plus.google.com/communities/102351823564702266781

The transaction company is task driven.

The community company is relationship driven.

Community companies provide a free service and somehow figure out how to make money from your attention and engagement. Monetization might be through the (big) data you give to them through your engagement and content contribution. Monetization might be through the attention you give as an audience.

The transaction company is a product company.

The community company is an attention company.

In this new connected world “Attention is The Product”.

“Attention is The Product” was first said to me in 2004 by +Ronald Wopereis. Attention has fascinated me ever since.

http://www.sunzu.com/articles/the-value-of-attention-37427/

Ronald believes that in the future post 2020 we will trade in attention. Attention itself will be a marketplace traded like a commodity. Again I sense Ronald is right yet I do not quite understand and am keen to see what you folks post below on this thread.

The transaction company is typically focused on its profit and loss account.

The community company is typically focused on its balance sheet and the value of its intellectual property and more deeply its intellectual product.

The transaction company is focused on scaling through distribution.

The community company is focused on scaling through licensing.

The transaction company seeks salespeople and dealmakers.

The community company seeks changemakers and content producers.

Neither is right, neither wrong, they are simply different.

The transaction company is an institution.

The transaction company requires institutional thinking.

The community company is a network.

The community company requires network thinking.

I suspect right now 90% of companies are transaction companies and 9% of companies are experimenting and transitioning the birth of their community company’s. The birth of a community company requires a skilled team of community people.

1% of companies I suspect are already community companies.

Who are these companies?

Do you think you know one or two of them already?

How do you think they have been funded?

Can you name them?

If so please add them below so I can study them, their intention, their process and their journey.

The question in directors’ minds is whether they can transform their transaction company into a community company or whether they need to start a separate new community company.

Transaction companies are buying (internal) social software in an attempt to become community companies.

Examples of social software might be:
http://www.salesforce.com
http://www.yammer.com
http://www.jive.com
http://www.webex.com/social/
http://www.lithium.com
http://www.bazaarvoice.com/
http://www-03.ibm.com/software/products/us/en/ibmconnsuit/
http://www.moxiesoft.com/solutions/socialknowledgebase.aspx
http://www.drupal.org
http://www.joomla.org

and of course the currently donation free and advertising free

http://plus.google.com

which for some transaction companies may make the perfect intranet.

I’m unsure whether these purchases will actually make those transaction companies become community companies. In reality the above social systems are often replacing email and make the transaction company more efficient and likely more automated with its engagement across multiple social platforms. The transaction company seeks the automation of all (social) processes ad workflow. This makes for a more efficient transaction company but it does not make it a community company. No.

When implementing social software the transaction company is typically focused on ROI like productivity gains, travel and entertainment savings and deeper employee engagement (happier staff). All three are internal measures. All three directly benefit the transaction company.

Q: How do they benefit the end user customer?
A: Most likely through reduced errors.

For a community company to emerge from within a transaction company the internal social system must be connected to an external social system where all stakeholders can engage. When I say all stakeholders I mean employees, future employees, shareholders, competitors, customers, suppliers, municipals, schools and colleges.

I think in many ways Google have already birthed this community company with Plus and yet despite this internally at Google many Googlers remain nervous about using Plus as I suggested earlier preferring only limited profiles or no posts (afterall they are at work). This is about confidence and trust in unfamiliar territory. Community is unfamiliar territory for most people because most people are transaction people. That’s how we’ve been brought up.

The GooglORS (Googlors) are still to emerge. By Googlors I mean those who think community in other words in an open random supportive way (ORS).

Perhaps an external team of open random supportive folk will evolve the internal Google to be even more “plus like” (not sure “plus like” is even a phrase).

Evolution from closed selective controlling (CSC) to open random supportive (ORS) needs to be gentle, non-intrusive and take time just like a garden cannot be forced to grow faster (even when you have the knowledge of what to do). Remember most people do not wish to change however tech savvy they are being short of time and comfortable with what they are already using.

The first part of the process in building a community company is to have the conversation internally about a community company.

Next it’s time to discuss a strategy for your community company. Is it to be evolved internally or is it to be done externally in a new company perhaps in a new building next door or down the road?

Then it’s time to discuss who would lead and form the team to build that community company.

What skills will be required?

What funding would be required?

Where will this capital come from?

Will capital come from the transaction company, new shareholders, sponsors, unknown stakeholders or donations from the community itself?

What kind of community will be built?

What will be the intention of this community?

How will this community gain attention?

How will this community retain attention?

What intellectual property is likely to emerge?

What intellectual product is hoped might emerge?

How can intellectual product be monetized in other ways?

How much time will the community be given to be born?

What software systems will be used?

Will the community company be connected to the transaction company?

How will these software systems be connected to the transaction company?

Who will be trained internally?

Who will be trained externally to be part of the community team?

Who will prepare the content?

Who will prepare the editorial calendar?

When will a pilot community begin?

How will we know a pilot community is working?

What measures will we use to define success, knowledge, insight, connections, users, contributors, license fees?

How will we scale up if (when) it works?

What’s the role of the transaction company in the community company, engaged or at a distance?

How will we support transaction people on their journey into the community?

Do the transaction people ever have the desire to be involved in the community company?

Who will we use to value our community and place a monetary (financial) value on its progress?

What’s our long term goal …for the community company to acquire the transaction company or vice versa?

Will we one day spin off the community company or will we one day combine these assets under one roof?

Questions, questions, questions.

This is the journey of evolving from transaction company to community company.

It is a journey Google are on which I admire them hugely for and it is a journey many companies have to follow so it makes sense to document and learn from Google’s experience. +Google+ is a living breathing case study with almost thirteen hundred people involved internally plus a team of external suppliers.

The best approach is to have a week by week, month by month, quarter by quarter plan of milestones you would like to achieve (ideally) so you can get a sense of what is possible and what is not. Remember there cannot be a right path there can only be the one you choose.

Where do you begin now?

The best play to begin is to begin by joining a community you are attracted to, find out if it works for you and see why it does or does not. There are plenty on Google+ and if I might recommend one to you it would be Conversation led by +John Kellden a Swede.

https://plus.google.com/communities/109257599738414342408

Then ask your employees which community actually holds their attention and why? Study those communities and understand exactly how they capture and hold attention particularly those communities that have done so for many years.

Now it’s time to return to your transaction company Boardroom and commence the conversation:

"from transaction company to community company …"

...are you ready with your business case in one hand and your adoption strategy in the other?

Good luck. Tx___Commercial Communities Come of Age—Again

The toll to cross the river on the town’s bridge is analogous to the ISP’s fee for bandwidth—an intrinsic part of the transaction flow. Naturally, the town would not exist if it were not for the community, typically formed around a river that, in turn, provided additional nodes to the network with the fees going to the ferrymen. The storage barns and depots along the way provided G ‘Drive’, DropBox, iCloud et al repositories, with escrow services, eBay, Paypal, etc., communicating and transacting with London, Amsterdam, Lyon,  Leipzig etc.

Spinners, weavers, and manufacturers—multiple examples here but let’s use paywalled media—added value to raw materials. Think community comment, actions, and activities, generating ‘news’ content to square the circle.

Hmmm, maybe that’s why the G+ logo is square with rounded corners. Thinking ‘different’ in circling the square. The market square?

The grim aspect is made crystal clear by economist and climate change expert Lord Stern in his comment last week on the future facing residents of Texas inhospitable environments: “The trouble will come when they try to migrate into new lands. The hopeful view is made equally clear in today’s Report. The researchers’ analysis that if global greenhouse gas emissions are cut rapidly, and now, then the negative biodiversity impact could cut by up to 60%.

However the focus here needs to be on the words ‘rapidly’ and ‘now’. We have less than three years. For the projected 60% reduction to be achieved, global emissions must peak no later than 2016 and temperature rises be held to <2 degrees C.

OK, so there’s the problem. Where is the political will?

#Caturday’s Not for Cats—It’s the Canine Sabbath
OK, finally I understand. Finally there’s proof that dogs have the upper hand paw—where’s that opposable thumb when it’s needed? That aside, we have proof now that #Caturday is a canine, rather than feline, conspiracy.

It’s a dog’s life. Yeah, right! All true ‘dog’ people know the twisted logic in that statement. Today, thanks to the Samsung S4’s translate feature now including Canine, there is incontrovertible proof that man’s, and women’s for that matter, best friend introduced Caturday to ensure a little peace for a seventh of the week.

While their arch enemies are being coiffed and pampered, given acting lessons, and made to repeat maddening tricks with infants, keyboards, and mice, members of the superior race are taking a well-earned rest. Thank Dog!

Thank Dog!

Excellent Advice—Maybe There's More That We Can Do
We could certainly start with doing everything we can to ensure that the 46 Senators who voted against the collective will of the 'People' never have the opportunity to serve another term.

We don't need the hyped-up cant and hypocrisy of television to achieve this end. The grassroots power of social media activists is vastly more powerful. It just needs passionate, peaceful activism.

Not, of course, that the Senate's vote matters that much. The measure would never have passed the House or committee stage, boundary re-districting has made sure of that. The only threat that most Representatives face is a challenge from within their own party.

Forget the Future, the Dystopian Present is Now—In Kansas
Of all the dystopian visions that are depicted with chilling realism in fiction, none matches the reality demonstrated in the article linked here.

Preferably one that deposits its captures not in a parallel universe, but in a forum beyond even the wildest imaginings of Dante. A place where the grief and reality of the lives destroyed by yesterday’s acts haunt the so-called ‘Christians’ of the Westboro Baptist Church for eternity.

Thank you +Alex Grossman for bringing this to my attention. Oh yes, a final note, for anyone selling ruby-red shoes, please ensure that you do a background check first.

Banking on the Brits—What Price the Euro Today?
I’m so sorry, I couldn’t resist the headline. What with the passing of the Iron Lady this week and the WSJ article shared here. Mind you, I do have to question the opening line of the second paragraph: “It turns out Canada can thank the French for their stable system...” I can only assume that the Murdoch’s ownership of the Journal doesn’t guarantee editorial independence. What about the Brits? Silly question.

OK, moving right along, there are some interesting concepts here that make reading Prof. Calomiris’ paper a worthwhile exercise. They certainly show that Margaret Thatcher did get some things right. In particular, her predictions on the power of Germany’s influence and the potential of the French hanging onto Germany’s coat-tails to the detriment of those nations unable to float their currency was on the money. It’s just unfortuna... more »

It’s just unfortunate that—the then young—Margaret, together with her Chancellor, Nigel Lawson, chose to model the UK’s regulatory system on that of the US and follow the misguided teachings of Milton Friedman.

It’s such a shame that Margaret studied Chemistry rather than History. A review of the financial background of the nations referenced as comparators by Prof. Calomiris, and highlighted in the WSJ piece, may have provided a few clues for a middle path: “Backing up their argument: Only six countries – including Canada — have been crisis-free and at the same time have banking systems that provide abundant credit. Three of these – Singapore, Malta and Hong Kong – are small, island-bound city-states where the homogeneity of the population makes it politically difficult to create losers. The other three – Canada, Australia and New Zealand – all share histories of liberal democracy.”

It’s interesting to note that the nations referenced here were once British dominions. Ah, but then that’s the benefit of hindsight.

Thank you +Steve Faktor for bringing this to my attention.

Digital Curation and Community—De Paris Pour Le Monde
Once again, in spite of my English heritage, I find myself promoting a French production. My only excuse is that I don't possess a single jingoistic gene. Actually, on second thoughts, if we go back to 1066, and were they alive today, my ancestors—having conquered the 'Sceptered Isle'—would say "Jingoism be damned". Besides, young Euro deserves recognition for his tireless efforts.

If it Ain’t Broke, Fix it—100% of Smug Google Utopians Agree
It has been my feeling for a while that we are being denied dramatic and productivity-enhancing developments in the online sphere. The cause appears to be twofold—corporate anti-competitive venality on the one hand, and the protectionism exhibited by individual managers within otherwise ethical corporations on the other. How many times can the wheel be re-invented?

In this increasingly dystopian world we really need a challenge to keep the mind active and prove that there are those out there with the intelligence and critical thinking skills that exceed those of the average gnat. Just the first line makes the point: Fast: Compose messages right from your inbox. What a concept! This explains why I never need to filter spam from Photoshop. Sarcasm aside, I have to ask whether the team that worked on the ‘Compose’ initiative could not have been applied more productively elsewhere. A replacement for Reader perhaps? Or something similar focused on consolidating news gathering and search results in a quick review format. Anything. Certainly there are multiple areas where finely-tuned targeting could save unnecessary searches and provide summary results with a synectic drill-down to act as a catalyst for intuition.

I had been considering this for the past couple of days when I happened upon this humuorous—but oh so on point—piece from Oliver Burkeman in today’s +The Guardian. Reading this made the whole thing clear. Contrary to my assumption, significant effort is being expended in research prior to the development of ‘improvements’. I just have one suggestion. Review the research panel and focus group members Replacing the Smug Utopians with a selection of those representative of the active majority would probably help us all.

Just a thought.

Update: I love synchronistic posts. As I was pushing 'send' in CA, +Alex Schleber was doing the same on a parallel post—http://goo.gl/nWCpA

Amazon Prices Hike—Time for Main Street to Dust off the Bike
What wonderful news as we head into a long week-end. For bricks-and-mortar businesses, from ‘Main Street USA’ to the U.K. ‘High Street’, the fact of Amazon taking a leaf out of Apple’s squeeze until the pips squeak philosophy and applying it to third-party traders is just brilliant. This move will do more to slow the decline of non-virtual retail SMB’s than any amount of Government inaction action.

It is an interesting twist to see Amazon applying pressure to the online merchant community in the same way that Apple exploits its loyal integrated—Apple TV, iPhone, iTunes, iCloud, Mac—user base. Well done Amazon, you’ve just saved/created many hundreds of thousands of jobs. You've doubtless increased your margins and made your shareholders happy too.

Well done Amazon, you’ve just saved/created many hundreds of thousands of jobs. You've doubtless increased your margins and made your shareholders happy too.

Currently one small business fails every hour in the U.K., and every twenty minutes in the U.S. Agreed, a number of the less-efficient Amazon traders will go bust with this move. However, the virtual job losses will be tiny. Particularly in comparison with those losses otherwise on the cards at the physical businesses that Amazon’s playing field leveling move will allow to survive through this depression/slow recovery cycle.

OK Main/High Street, you’ve gained some time. Use it wisely. Invest in understanding the digital and mobile economy. This is where your customers all went.

PS: Consumers, you benefit too. The survival of High/Main Street is critical for choice, true social interaction, and quality of life.

Hold That Thought—I Must Snap a Squirrel
Life is strange. Photography—certainly where squirrels are concerned—is simply a matter of timing. Having worked through the past two weekends, and suffering from the consequences known all too well to many of those in this forum, I decided to take advantage of a deferred meeting. I decided to take the day off... And rest. Gosh! I can still spell the word—r-e-s-t. Relaxation = Photography. Current target = Simon.

Having been walking this morning, then lurked on the decks supporting three or four kilos of camera body and lens, shot some deer—using nothing but electrons I would add—then some super springtime blossoms, I became bored. "Oh bugger"  thought I, “I may as well work.”

Back down in my office Skype spoke. There was Ayoub. We were just a few minutes into a call when I lifted my eyes from the video camera in the center of my main monitor and saw Simon feasting on the Chickadee’s suet feeder twenty feet from my office window. “Hold that thought Ayoub!” Luckily the camera, with an appropriate lens still in place, was on my desk. The images in the album attached to this post are the result. #squirrelsaturday ? Hey, it was my week-end.

The Power of Circles—And Hexagons
Having known +Thomas Power for many years and worked with him closely over the past two, I am delighted to see the 'Leadors' concept getting traction and finally making the 'Hot List' with the help of +martin shervington's excellent clear and concise post.

Many of those in my circles will already know the principle. For those who don't Martin's post is well worth reading.

Would you like to learn a little more about yourself and others?

I've teamed up with the brilliant fellow who started Ecademy, +Thomas Power who I've met in London on my last few visits.
He introduced me to the '8 Leadors profiles' you see below and I thought you too may be interested: http://www.leadors.co
Please note: I am not earning commission or anything similar from this activity just am very interested in this area. All about it here:

What is it all about?
The leadORS indicator gives you insight into your own communication style and the journey you need to lead to conduct effective "online conversations" personally, and within your organisation.

Why is this important in business today?
Attracting and engaging with customers, leading and retaining staff and staying ahead of the competition is of paramount importance for today’s business leaders. The leadORS indicator provides a solution to these challenges by understanding your communication style and helping you to transform business thinking through social engagement and digital citizenship. Sound good?

What do you do next?
Well, it take about a minute to complete the questionnaire here: http://www.leadors.co
I've done it. I am a 'Scout'

The indicator will…
• Identify your preferred communication style online
• Take you on a journey to become Open, Random, Supportive (ORS), the most effective way to behave on the internet
• Identify simple steps to build your profile and communicate effectively online
• Show you how you can interact with communities online
• Review your team styles and identify typical brand advocates
• Build your business brand online and stand out ahead of the competition
Once we are rolling I will give you some more information on it all as well.

Finished the questionnaire?
Then check out this post to see more about each style: http://goo.gl/RmWYn

Next steps: hangout to learn more:

+Thomas Power has agreed to do a hangout for the community to explore and explain this whole area, which should be fascinating - to be announced shortly.
Here is the link for the questionnaire again: http://www.leadors.co
Thanks for trusting and engaging with this one - I can see it playing a great role in our Google+ journey together.
Please share if you'd like more people to join in as well!

Pride and Prejudice—But Picture Purrfect
OK, I know, I am allergic to caturday, cat gif's, and a dog person through and through. However I am a photographer too. In a break between calls and meetings today I took a few moments to download some 'snaps' of a pet squirrel that inhabits our Santa Cruz deck. In a weird twist of fate, the better shots in the download turned out to be of 'Nellie'. Those who know me well, please don't ask. Nellie—a.k.a. 'The Cat'—inhabits the deck too.

Now, although not a cat person I can appreciate a cat that attempts to befriend not only a squirrel, but the birds and occasional rodent too. Further, her photogenic properties require that her images be retained.

PS: For those who feel the same way as I concerning cats, #caturday , and G+, please note that 'Samantha' the squirrel features in one of the shots.

Search and You Shall Find—Just Search Privately
This excellent share from +Gary S. Hart provides food for deep thought. For Douglas Adams fans, it should give the white mice and planet earth something to think about too. Taking the time to read the linked article and watch the full presentation is hopeful and chilling. The post reminded me of an exchange that I had with one of my old editors the other day.

During a chat on an ongoing research project, she made the statement that it was probably the growth of indexed content that made it more difficult to find truly relevant links these days. Now, knowing that this person was particularly skilled at structuring search phrases, I asked if she searched with ’Private Browsing’ selected. “Ah, that’s a thought.” Was the response. Inanimate objects are becoming sentient & everything is watching you!

Gus Hunt, CIA's CTO tells us how the CIA is using big data and where it is headed. You think Google, Facebook, and the rest of the Internet invades our privacy? You think it's a big deal that Google reads your email to serve you better ads, that Google and other search engines track your movement and behavior to sell you what they think you want? Think bigger and deeper.

How you walk, your gait, is a digital finger print. Yep, you don't even have to be on your phone anymore. How about group behavior. Every group has a unique persona. When Mary, John, Jan, and Joe are together, what do we know about them as a group and how can we use that group psychographic?

How does this trickle down into business and education and personal social planning. This is a double edged sword. Grouping students and employees, navigating an organizational chart, selecting who sits with who at conferences and weddings, casinos managing your black jack or craps table's mood with dealer, croupier, music, food and drink. Customized environments based on who is there.

How else do you see this playing out? Will the good outweigh the bad? Will dating and mate selection be reduced to push notices from a ubiquitous ever-present OS that collects and analyzes and decides where we should go, what we should do, and with whom we should do it with? Is the next generation primed for this promise of convenience?

I could go on about Big Brother and the realization of Orwell's Dystopian Society, but then I would be a conspiracy theorist, wouldn't I? Instead, listen to the Master Collector and Aggregator of Everything Us, Gus HUNT CTO for the CIA, and let your imagination roam wherever it wants while it still can.

Quantum Computing and Aliens—The Event Horizon Approaches
Quantum Computing is just around the corner. It offers the potential for Algorithms to break their bonds with humanity as Qubits cast off binary digital restraints and allow computer systems to make decisions without reference to their designers.

From the earliest days of cryptography practitioners have known that more often than not it is an anomaly, rather than a commonality, that allows a code to be broken. Like an errant thread, the pulling of which unravels a complex piece of knitwear, recognizing the disruption in a pattern is vital for success.

Like an errant thread, the pulling of which unravels a complex piece of knitwear, recognizing the disruption in a pattern is vital for success.

Yes, mathematics is important—evidenced by the core skills of Antoine Rossignol, and Alan Turing some three centuries later. However, the human brain’s ability to recognize, then parse, billions of data points without conscious effort is essential. Pattern recognition is key. We all have the ability to parse the data, but very few have a sufficiently broad data ‘pipe’ and the biological RAM to benefit.

This thought is brought into sharp focus by my first dip into +Meg Tufano‘s Spring edition—http://goo.gl/GCCvr—of The Journal for Social Era Knowledge, combined with yesterday’s post by +Jeff Sayre on advances in quantum computing research. There is a pattern here. The errant thread is becoming less obvious as the distinction between social interactions and binary data blend into a seamless whole and the event horizon approaches.

Indeed, when we cross the threshold, and when the importance of distinctions between ‘social’, ‘search’, ‘society’, ‘Socratic method’, and ‘semantics’, disappear down the slippery slope of predigested data, I have to ask what will happen to the human brain. Where will the critical thinking on these issues, so eloquently discussed, by each of Meg’s contributors be computed? Who, or what, will make the decisions?

At this point I have only had time to read the excellent contributions from +Giselle Minoli, +Leland LeCuyer, +David Amerland, and start Meg's opus. However, having skimmed the other contributions, I have a feeling that every one will blend humanity with computing. This is natural. This is the ‘Social Era’. But, for how long?

My contribution to the Winter edition of the Journal, from which the quote at the beginning of this post was drawn, may offer a clue. I thoroughly recommend reading the Spring edition to see how far we've advanced in just a few months.___

Swallows and the School Bus—An Evolutionary Parallel?
I have often been impressed by the aerodynamic acrobatics of the swallows that nest in the bridges on I5 between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their ability to avoid collisions with cars whilst grabbing a quick snack is remarkable. As such I found the report, cited below, of more than passing interest. It brought to mind an article that I wrote some twenty years ago on a possible cause for the abnormally high pedestrian accident statistics in the U.S.

I wrote the piece shortly after I moved to America from Europe and discovered, fortunately just in time, that over here school buses have flashing red lights—many sporting octagonal wings imprinted with the word ‘Stop’. I stopped. I then watched in horror as children dropped from the door onto the sidewalk and, looking neither right nor left, shot across the street.

At the time I was interim CEO of a small East Coast newspaper and, as I drove to meet with the editor, I could not help thinking about Darwin and the epidemiological aspects of the phenomenon I had just witnessed. A quick search on arrival at the office showed that pedestrian accidents were some three times higher in the U.S. than the U.K., on a per capita basis. The editor kindly agreed to let me take a break from management and don my journalist hat.

Back then, and sadly it’s not changed much in the past twenty years, the CDC reported that children ages 5 to 14 are more likely to die from traffic and pedestrian injuries than any other cause. Further, boys and young men—genetically encoded to jump or run first and think later, unlike the typically wiser female of the species—were twice as likely to be injured or killed. This is not surprising. School buses still have wings.

Now this is not the place for a ‘nature’ vs. ‘nurture’ discussion, both have their place in the evolution of all species. What is important is that nurturing children with protection, rather than education and training on good road-safety protocols, is a bad move in evolutionary terms. Instead of being taught to exit with care, look right, left, right again, then cross, kids are taught that their most aggressive predator just stops and waits while they run or saunter across the street.

Even worse, the training reinforces the belief that the best place to cross is in front of a stationary vehicle. The fact that this may work when the vehicle is bright yellow, but not when it’s blue, green, red, or any other colour, and without wings, fails to sink in for all too many.

Unlike the swallows that have evolved in as little as thirty years, the school bus has changed little. It’s time. Darwin awards are scant compensation, nor deserved, by those subjected to the consequences of ill thought out protocols—if they are thought of at all.

Under-employed—The Problem's Not the Work, It’s the Need

Buried within today’s PEW Research Center report on Modern Parenthood are some obvious, but disturbing, statistics. The gender gap is alive, and unfortunately well, although it is narrowing. That it is shrinking is good news. Less good are the underlying data.

Now although there could well be some valid discussion on the definition of the word ’prefer’, the fact that today one in three American mothers say that they would ‘prefer’ a full-time job, compared with one in five in 2007, is hugely significant. The statistic shines a revealing light on the true unemployment numbers—the rarely discussed python slithering under the table whenever the unemployed are discussed as a class. This is a 60% increase—10% per annum compounded annually—in the number of ‘working’ mothers seeking employment.

The statistic shines a revealing light on the true unemployment numbers—the rarely discussed python slithering under the table whenever the unemployed are discussed as a class. This is a 60% increase—10% per annum compounded annually—in the number of ‘working’ mothers seeking employment.

Now although I’ve not found a breakout of the data in my first pass through the report, I have a sneaking suspicion that most of these mothers are not so much seeking ‘work’ as ‘income’. Times are tough and getting tougher. A quick review of average salary and earnings growth for the entire economy over the same period makes this sickeningly clear. Indeed, there is a clue in the number of working fathers who are reported as saying that they would spend more time at home if it were possible.

Full-time jobs are a shrinking commodity. Those Jobs with the flexibility to balance work and parenthood fewer still. A quick search for phrases such as ‘get rich quick’, ‘earn extra income from home’, etc., will provide a disturbing overview of the number of ‘businesses’ exploiting this need and the trend.

There are a number of good models out there too. Unfortunately, their margins, and consequently PPC/SEM budgets, are vastly lower than their less ethical competition. Thus the few get richer and the majority suffer—most in silence. It really is time to address the issue. There is a solution.___

Titanic Failure—A Tale of Two Economies
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Titanic Failure—A Tale of Two Economies
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It’s a wonderful opening line, but since this piece has little to do with Paris, although much to do with Dickens’ unflattering social comparisons where London–read UK–life is concerned, then rather than cities perhaps I should start with two ships—the QE II and the Titanic.

Now I mention the QE II since the letters ‘QE’ stand for Queen Elizabeth; the UK’s reigning monarch whose image graces the currency of the realm—the Pound Sterling. In the Pound’s current state, and with the UK in the longest depression–the ‘triple dip’ euphemism be damned–for over a century, perhaps it’s time to review the adjectival form of the ‘Sterling’ noun. Adjectival derivations, bring me neatly to the second ship—the Titanic. The adjective titanic is a perfect descriptor for the failure of the UK’s Government to learn from recent history, or to understand the most basic principles of economic and social equity.

It’s a little late for the Titanic. However the QE II was rescued recently from being recycled into toasters and SmartPhones in China, with the ship moored currently in Dubai awaiting its conversion and upgrade to become a floating hotel. It is a shame that another of the ‘QE’ acronyms ’Quantitive Easing’ can’t be upgraded and converted into something that addresses its unsuitability for purpose given the changed dynamics.

The ‘dynamics’ to which I refer would be fiscal, rather than hydro. The ‘upgrade’ would be conversion into something that actually works. To explain further, it is worth focusing on this extract from the +The Guardian article linked here.

Alan Clarke, UK economist at Scotiabank, said only a strong rise in the services sector could rescue the economy.

“This is the penultimate nail in the coffin in terms of triple-dip – it’s pretty much game over now,” said Clarke. “Unless we have a stellar performance from the services sector, we’re almost certainly in a triple dip.”

The National Institute for Economic and Social Research emphasised the weak state of the economy after it predicted GDP contracted in the last three months. Only a day after the OECD predicted the British economy was slowing, the researchers said national income contracted by 0.1% compared to 0.2% for the three months to the end of January.

The dismal news will put pressure on the Bank of England to boost its quantitative easing scheme from its current £375bn level as it seeks to increase lending and growth.

I have two comments here. The first relates to the omission of ‘public sector’ from Alan Clarke’s comment on the ‘services sector’. It is time for George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer—and absolutely the most narrow minded since Nigel Lawson who proved categorically that supply-side economics only work when an economy is expanding—to realize that the public sector is not the enemy of private enterprise. Osborne, Cameron, and business leaders to the right, need to understand that the public sector is a valuable partner. In times of dire economic woes, when every metric other than unemployment and poverty is heading south, public sector investment is essential.

My second comment relates to the phrase ‘quantitative easing scheme’. QE is a ‘scheme’, and in a weak economy it’s a very good one. Properly managed, the inflation risk is minimal and the results gradual but tangible. However, I have news for Messrs. Osborne and Cameron, the UK’s economy is not ‘weak’, it’s on a gurney heading away from intensive care—towards the Mortuary. It’s taking the Nation’s currency, complete with QE II’s image, along for the ride.

This brings me back to the two economies. As many who live in London will be aware, the city is one of the few around the globe where property prices barely nudged down in 2008. Mind you, few ‘Londoners’ were buying, nor have for the past five years. Homes in London are purchased using Euro- and Petro-dollars, with many empty for much of the year. The weakening currency will only strengthen this trend.

The natives who are lucky enough to still have a home and a job lead degraded lives. For many their leisure time decays as long commutes are made worse by appalling traffic. Appalling traffic that a huge public investment in infrastructure could mitigate. Now there’s an idea. Investment—public and private.

Oh yes, one final thought. Last time I was in London I noticed that, just like the QE II, a number of larger homes near the West End had been converted into upscale boutique hotels. May I suggest that numbers 10 and 11 Downing Street receive the same treatment. I’m certain that the current occupants could be re-cycled.

Much Exaggerated—Rumours of my Digital Demise
For those of you never yet forced by pressure of work, seclusion in a Himalayan monastery, the luxury of a well-earned vacation, or other long and absorbing pursuits to take a social media break, I have a caution. Don’t! Don’t do it. At the very minimum find time to log on from your locked office, mountain top, or beach. 798 notifications in a single sitting can be a little daunting.

I know now that I could have found an hour or so between trains, planes, automobiles, offices, meetings, and the occasional doze, to log on. Hindsight is, indeed, 20:20. Maybe even as good as 20:15. Thankfully I don’t pretend, nor intend, to scale the walls of Facebook, restricting myself to G+ and a few specialized business and technology networks is sufficiently daunting. I’ve a lot of catching up to do.

As for those of you who were kind enough to tag me on posts and threads over the two months since my last post—queue music—Thank You! Thank you for keeping the faith. Please don’t stop. I’ve scanned all. As time allows, and assuming that relevance remains, I shall comment and/or ‘plus’.

Onward!

PS: Just as a matter of interest I should mention that, although I’ve been working non-stop, it’s been fun. Together with a great team I have been putting the finishing touches to a new model that brings together local business, the digital economy, entrepreneurism, opportunity, and equity—both economic and social. More on this soon.

HT to +Lori Friedrich for the text that inspired the graphic. Let’s chat tomorrow.

Debt Ceiling—Heads the US Wins, Tails the GOP Loses
Much as the headline writer in me admires the ‘cleverness’ of the headline “Toss a Coin”—say it quickly Brits—in The Economist, and the tag line, “A crackpot idea to circumvent America’s debt ceiling gains currency”, neither is justified as the article itself demonstrates rather clearly. Actually this is the best idea that I’ve seen come out of D.C. in the current age.

As to the article, it’s worth reading. Indeed, I feel that the author has more than a passing knowledge of history in so far as economics, global power, and currency are concerned. I just hope that the US Fed and the Treasury are studying their equivalents across the Pond. After all, the Bank of England pioneered the concept of using the nation as collateral for paper money, enabling the reconstruction of the navy, creation of jobs, andeventually getting even... more »

As to the article, it’s worth reading. Indeed, I feel that the author has more than a passing knowledge of history in so far as economics, global power, and currency are concerned. I just hope that the US Fed and the Treasury are studying their equivalents across the Pond. After all, the Bank of England pioneered the concept of using the nation as collateral for paper money, enabling the reconstruction of the navy, creation of jobs, and eventually getting even with the French.

At the same time, arguably the greatest genius of the Age of Enlightenment, Sir Isaac Newton was put in charge of the Royal Mint and moved the Pound Sterling to the gold standard. From then until the Whigs finally lost long-term control in the early 20th Century and the Tories took control, the UK went on to build history’s broadest and most successful empire.

Looking at the history, and considering the consequences of yet another climb down by this administration, or the Senate, as the House extracts its pound of flesh for the inevitable debt ceiling increase, I believe that the idea is far from ‘crackpot’. I believe that it’s elegant, clean, and just. Mint away!

“Unlike bank notes, which are liabilities of the Fed and thus part of the monetary base, coins are liabilities of the Treasury. The money the Fed creates to pay for the coins does not become part of the monetary base until the Treasury spends it, and it ends up in a commercial bank’s reserves at the Fed. The monetary base could eventually expand by $1 trillion in this way. But because the Fed has paid interest on reserves since 2008, it would retain control of interest rates and therefore of inflation.”

“Apart from circumventing the debt ceiling, there might be other practical benefits. Gary Gorton, an economist at Yale, says issuing the coins in smaller denominations of, say, $50m could provide companies with a risk-free alternative to current accounts, easing the financial system’s shortage of safe assets.”

A Broken System—A Lousy Deal—No End in Sight
The subhead on the cover of the forthcoming edition of The Economist is a perfectly crafted example of the headline writer’s art. Such a shame that it is accurate also—particularly the final phrase. The same cannot be said, however, for the headline itself. If only!

If only the U.S. would turn European in respect of money in politics. In Europe the venal and corrupt lobbying practices that enabled business to drive the agenda and the structure of yesterday’s last-minute climb down would have not been possible and/or resulted in long, and deserved, jail terms. In doubt? Just look at the corporate welfare that is now locked in for the foreseeable future and the human welfare that will be cut as the debt ceiling debate runs its course.

The Electronics Engineering Journal may seem a strange place to find hope interwoven with a brilliantly insightful piece on the inevitability of future production economics. It’s not. In reality it’s where such articles should be published. It’s just sad that the distribution channel is unlikely to reach the ostriches. But, and here there is hope, embodied within this article is a message that is easy to share and so clearly written that it must resonate with even the most entrenched ostrich. The following paragraph provides a glimpse of the message. Please read the whole article and share as widely as possible. This is our future.

“Hardware engineering is like architecture; software is like poetry. You need expensive tools and an expensive education to be an architect. You can’t simply wing it and hope your buildings stand up. But anyone can try writing poetry; it doesn’t fall down if it’s amateurish—not in the literal sense, at least. In economic terms, poetry and programming both have low barriers to entry. Anyone can try, and those with the talent and inclination can make a career out of it. You can’t really do that with architecture or ASICs.”___

Closing Resolutions—Of the Photographic Kind
Much along the lines of the military axiom concerning the futility of issuing an order that it is known will not be obeyed, I only qualify as an occasional ‘resolute’ when each New Year arrives. However, given the success of last year’s resolve to quit Marlboro’s evil weed finally, I’m going to have another attempt this year... Spend more time with my photographic equipment.

Actually, it’s not simply photography. It’s life. Spend more time smelling the roses rather than working to become fertilizer and positioning oneself to feed the roses from below. Spend more time absorbing nature rather than as ash being sprinkled upon, and then absorbed by, nature.

Actually, it’s not simply photography. It’s life. Spend more time smelling the roses rather than working to become fertilizer and positioning oneself to feed the roses from below. Spend more time absorbing nature rather than as ash being sprinkled upon, and then absorbed by, nature.

Having spent much of the past month completely absorbed by business—travel and ‘screen-time’—to the extent of ignoring not simply self, but the extended ‘G+ Family’, clearly the time has come to re-evaluate. Stage #1, take and post a photograph and write an apologetic post. Stage #2 provide triggers and incentives to drive compliance with the resolution. I’ve managed, I hope, to combine the two here.

The photograph is the view from my desk if I were to take the time to look over the top of my monitors! In this case it’s the view at 11:00 AM at this time of year—taken with a graduated filter clearly—as the sun finally bites and turns the night’s moisture to steam that percolates up through the branches and the determined last leaves of Autumn.

I have made this photograph my new ‘desktop’ on my primary monitor. The transition as I peer over the backlight LED’s to reality will, I hope, drive me outside, camera in hand. Hopefully, into the car or a hike to the redwoods with camera and wife. At a minimum my resolution is that I’ll photograph, post, and create something of value and/or engage once more—engage with, then extend, life. ___

The data and link posted by +Jeff Jockisch just now, together with the post by +Gideon Rosenblatt on 'Social Business' brought to mind a piece that I wrote back in September that would seem to add context to both.

Entrepreneurs & Economics—Seeding the American Dream

Entrepreneurs & Economics—Seeding the American Dream
Yesterday [September 20th, 2012] there was a particularly thought provoking article in the Washington Post—http://goo.gl/sbE9r. In the piece +Ezra Klein provided a perfect counter to Romney’s 47% idiocy argument and made the obvious, but oft-times missed, point that access to money and personal responsibility are inversely proportional. Nowhere is this more true than in the case of prospective entrepreneurs—the job creators.

As Ezra pointed out so succinctly: “The point here isn’t that Romney is unfamiliar with cutting-edge work in cognitive psychology. It’s that he misses even the intuitive message of this work, the part most of us know without reading any studies: It’s really, really hard to be poor. That’s because the poorer you are, the more personal responsibility you have to take.”

As one reads the article it becomes increasingly clear why the ‘American Dream’ is a fading memory for so many. Without Maslow’s base needs covered, either through employment or a social safety net, the mere act of survival absorbs all available cognitive resource for the majority. With a good idea it’s not the seed capital that’s in short supply. For those with the ability, it’s the time to focus, to seed, and to germinate, the idea—then to seek out the seed capital.

The difference between the U.S., and many other OECD nations, and the declining opportunities for the American Dream to become reality, were brought into sharp focus by an article on CNN World this morning. Writing from Australia, Paul Steffens made the point that:

“The United States, long seen as the bastion of free enterprise, continues to do many things right. In fact, at 12.3 percent the U.S. has the highest overall level of entrepreneurship per capita. Yet recent years have seen a dip in alternative employment opportunities in the U.S., meaning that a much larger number of new businesses are borne out of necessity.” How true Professor Steffens.

Now, the key word here is ‘necessity’. Losing a job and having either a pay-off package or savings is one thing. On-going income maybe necessary, but there is time and resource to stand back and consider options—to consider the option of starting a small business. Losing a job with no ‘package’ no healthcare, no savings, and worse, no safety net is another thing altogether. Here, for those in the U.S., the American Dream recedes to the vanishing point as reality strikes and survival becomes paramount. As Ezra Klein pointed out, it is difficult to think of the future when the present is all-absorbing.

So, what is the solution? Let’s look at J. K. Rowling—today one of the world’s most wealthy ladies.  Through being on ‘welfare’, Ms. Rowling was able to remove the pressure of survival by virtue of government support for both education and basic needs. Clearly, the majority will not achieve JKR’s success. However, with a socially equitable support infrastructure, a significant number of the 47% that Romney has consigned to humanity’s scrap heap would be able to remove sufficient stress to re-build their lives and, in many cases, build a business. Many of these businesses would, in turn, create jobs—reducing the 47% even further.

The best part of this approach is good news for Romney, assuming, of course, that he finds himself back in the investment business come November. The best ideas and more successful enterprises always require growth capital providing, in turn, investment income for individuals and retirement funds. This is distributed capitalism. It works. It’s a good thing.

It is just sad that too many of those driving the agenda of the far right in the U.S., missed the economics class where ‘distribution’ was discussed, and too many on the left fail to understand the basic human need for incentive—more often than not delivered through meritocratic and capitalist systems. Just look ‘Down Under’ for an example of the benefits.___
