Piotr Tymiński6,921URBEX PHOTOGRAPHERS v.2A circle of my urbex photographers for you to enjoy. A wide variety of styles - from HDR to almost documentary but all with a taste of abandonment. I'm sure you will be inspired by some of the work presented in the streams of these fine ladies and gentlemen.I did every effort to include only the people who show their own original work and do not jam their streams with garbage. But since I am only a fragile human it's possible (although unlikely as I am also a genius, too) that I made a small mistake or two. Don't be scared to yell at me then and I'll do my best to clean things up.There are some more good photographers which I stumbled upon, but since the accounts did not seem to be updated recently I decided not to include them. So hopefully no junk or dead pages here.G+ is a vast resource and there's no way on Earth I could find all the great people of the genre so if you think you would fit in in the circle please give me a shout. Your kind suggestions in respect of adding some folk which I had surely missed would be greatly appreciated.Sharing of the circle is obviously appreciated, too. It's for everybody to enjoy and get inspired, so no harm in sharing:) Your suggestions are always most welcomed - I'm sure I've missed a lot of nice people - G+ is a huge place. And no, you do not need to circle me, buy me vodka or feed my cat just because I included you in the circle.#sharedcircle #sharedcircles #sharingcircle #sharingcircles  #circle #circles  #topengagers #circleshare    #circlesharing #photographycircles #urbex2014-05-23 13:15:17114996CC G+

Jamie Robertson9,433EXCEPTIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS CIRCLEIf you like to see truly exceptional photography in your stream then I urge you to add this circle.I've been building up this circle for quite some time. At present there are only 49 people in it but I am looking for more suggestions. I want to add photographers of the highest calibre, people whose work stands out well above the rest. I don't care how many followers they have, what gear they use, where they are from or what subjects they specialise in. I simply want to see stunning photography. If you think your work meets the standard, please tell me in the comments section and share this post.Likewise, if you know someone who should be included, please mention them here and share. Please don't be offended if I don't add you to this circle but I welcome all suggestions :-)People currently included in this circle are: +Richard Bram +Kjetil Greger Pedersen +Andrea Acailawen +Jim Kunz +Kieran O'Connor +Michael Riffle +Marc Muench +Kevin Smith +Ian Ference +Peter From +Rob Daugherty +Art Wolfe +Michael Breitung +G Dan Mitchell +Alfred Pleyer +2014-05-10 10:59:19491529CC G+
David Bowden37,155Its been awhile....For over three years I collected and shared an exclusive B&W circle. This circle "was" one of the most shared on G+ for awhile. I would share it once a month with everyone as a part of my personal desire to share more quality B&W images and photographers. The requirement for being in this circle was that the photographer shot at least 60% B&W images (I tend to shoot 80%).There are some excellent photographers and friends here. I encourage you to take a look at their work. While I know that bulk circle sharing is a thing of the past or no longer the norm on G+ (which is a shame) I wanted to re-share a collection of truly inspirational people. You wont be disappointed. Re-share if you like their work</david>2014-05-06 23:16:1649012223CC G+

Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204CC G+

Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113479149CC G+

Or, I had a senior moment and missed them.  I thought I had avoided that this time but I still managed to miss +Magnus Ericson should should be around 454. I noticed some interesting things when compiling this circle.  There are a lot of people that moved into the top 500 that abandoned G+ for some reason or their interaction has become one post a month.  I have also noticed that many of the photographers in this group have a lower follower count than they had 6 weeks to 8 weeks ago.  I'm not sure what conclusion can be drawn from this but I find it very curious. To view the lists please see the following links.001 to 080: http://goo.gl/mmr7w  4'431'409 - 55771081 to 160: http://goo.gl/mXuup  55368 - 37454161 to 240: http://goo.gl/rLmy1  37343 - 30457241 to 320: http://goo.gl/o06Hy  30131 -25785321 to 390: http://goo.gl/747Lf  25760 -23013390 to 450: http://goo.gl/xDc2D  23006 - 21347450 to 510: http://goo.gl/sEnac  21321 - 194402013-02-23 23:33:145001353999CC G+

Gene Bowker45,757Photographers to follow 2013 #alphabetcircles    by +Gene Bowker First Name H-JSo how did I decide who is in the circles this time?1) Active : They have posted within the last month. With the holidays a lot of folks have slowed down but these folks are still there. Yes, I visited each stream.2) Original These photographers are sharing "THEIR OWN WORK" and their stream is mostly photography. 3) Interactive I try to find folks who are interactive and comment on their own posts and the posts of others. There are some names you will recognize in here for sure but there are also some folks you probably don't know yet. Hopefully you will take some time to check them out and see if they have room in your circles. Not in hereGo ahead and circle the folks in the circle anyway =) Then you can read more about how I select at https://plus.google.com/111112809838472063992/posts/NeJZXLJ6oQBBe Original. Be Active. Be Interactive. There is a good chance we'll cross paths before I share the circles again.Feel free to reshare in your stream!I love it when people take the time to reshare these circles. It allows my friends to be introduced to your friends.. and promotes some great photography on G+.Here are the #alphabetcircles for 2013A-Chttps://plus.google.com/111112809838472063992/posts/YUPre2B2kckD-Ghttps://plus.google.com/111112809838472063992/posts/4ZJPzcPtrizH-Jhttps://plus.google.com/111112809838472063992/posts/eKB7DCAVG3tK-Mhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/111112809838472063992/posts/HvFzPoFpE7CN-Shttps://plus.google.com/u/0/111112809838472063992/posts/TX3VXzpLCeWT-Zhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/111112809838472063992/posts/THeMhf2Am7f2013-01-25 01:12:01159692352CC G+

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard. Here is the 6th and last part  of my list of the top 500 most followed photographers - Here are links to the previous parts of the list.Group 1: http://tinyurl.com/cf58vws - 1 to 100Group 2: http://tinyurl.com/bodaspk - 101 to 193Group 3: http://tinyurl.com/bsb87u4 - 194 to 250 and circleGroup 4: http://tinyurl.com/d4ulv6q  - 250 to 340Group 5: http://tinyurl.com/cjpmgy4 - 341 to 420 Group 6: 421 to 500 and circle of 500 (this post)If you are on this list, I urge you to comment, plus and share the post. I have sifted through lots of pages and circles as well as http://circlecount.com/  to try to get an accurate list. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive. The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.#Top500CircleDec   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  420 +Jennifer Luzio 21797421 +Matt Suess 21794422 +Nichole McCall 21754423 +Dane Clingan 21718424 +Xavier Ruiz Canadell 21700425 +Emi Fujimoto 21697422013-01-07 15:33:25500221350CC G+
M Monica0#SharedCircles   #Photography  Small Photography CircleThis is a small circle of my favorite photographers on G+. Some are well known, but the majority are not- some are just starting out here, and barely known. These are the people I check most often because I like their style. (Also a couple of artists thrown in here.) If you want to add a small circle, I really recommend it. BTW if you want to be added to this circle, follow these steps:1. Reshare the circle.2. Plus mention +M Monica and let me know you feel you qualify as a beginning photographer. I will add you to the original circle. I'm building this one up to 100 people, at which point I will share again. 3. Please don't add your name or ask to be added to the circle if you don't qualify or are not interested in photography. This is not about getting more followers; this is for people interested in photography to add like minded people and connect with others who have just started, or who already know a lot. +Best Shared Circle +Shared Pages Circles +SharedCircles 2012-12-13 17:50:17252112CC G+
Thomas Hawk4,072,391Congratulations to the first 100 contributors to the Light Box.  All 108 of these photographers have had images voted into the Light Box.   The Light Box is a fun new dynamic photography community on Google+ http://goo.gl/jisrZ  where photographers submit their photos for voting/critique by their peers.  10 saves and the photo is voted into the Light Box.  10 deletes and the photo is rejected.  Check it out if you have some time (remember to vote on 15 photos before submitting your own).  These 108 photographers are talented, active community members who you might like to get to know. Check out the great work they've had voted in so far here:  http://goo.gl/c45MQI'll share this circle again when we get to 200.  :)2012-12-10 18:36:14108241470CC G+

If you're in it, why not recommend a few people for me to circle up, or share the circle out with your stream? :D #thethreehundred   #circleshare   #sharingiscaring  2012-10-22 15:52:142971201281CC G+

A Big Announcement!

So many of you have probably noticed that I've barely been around on social media as of late - the reason for this is that I've been negotiating for a book project with People Inc. Press of Buffalo to write a monograph on my favorite building.  I can officially announce that contracts have been signed and work on the book is underway!  So here's the first of many new images from my favorite building to be posted, this one of a stack of chairs left in a sickly-yellow room on Ward 4 in the building.  Thanks for bearing with me during my absence, and I can't wait to share more details (and photos) as work on the book speeds up!

Good friends, good staircase, good moon!

So I just returned from a roadtrip with comrade-in-arms +Amy Heiden and new friend +Todd Sipes; we rocked 4 locations over 3 days.  One of them was another trip to Hudson River State Hospital - the location I was initially least excited about, having been there dozens of times over the years.  But when it came time to shoot Blue Hour, I knew right where I wanted to be - on the grand curved stairwell in the Administrative section of the Kirkbride asylum.  When I finally got into position in this corner, civil twilight was already waning, and by the time I got the shot composed, almost over - but I noticed something.  The waxing gibbous moon, almost full, was shining in and hitting the wall to the left.  Lacking time to meter the situation, I just guessed - ISO 200, f/9, 15 minutes on Bulb.  And then, right at the end of the exposure, twopeople... more »

Serenity in the Ruins

Another from my most recent roadtrip with Ms Meggo; in order to get this shot, I had to traverse much of the building to get to the other side of the collapse while she got ready to kick up the dust for the "smoke" effect and then quickly hit her pose...

My account was just suspended for "pornography".

This is important, people.  For the last couple of days, my Google Plus account was suspended for "pornography", even though I have never posted a pornographic image in my life.  I post fine art nudes.  I am going to continue posting fine art nudes.  I am not going to stop posting fine art nudes.  So if you don't like fine art nudes, please unfollow me now.

I am saddened that some people who chose to follow me decided to flag my photography.  I am saddened even more by the fact that Google Plus temporarily suspended my account because they were unable to tell the difference.  I have been a member of this community for about three years, and have been posting nudes the entire time.  In fact, it was my "polemical argument about sexism" that went viral and led to a wideraccepta... more »

Restless Sleep

Okay, a second post today, just because Mr. +Ricardo Williams is clearly waiting by his computer for one to come down the stream.  ;)

Ms Meggo - the model in this photograph - is a total badass.  If that pose looks easy (or painless) in any way, go find a hospital bed and try it - seems like all that yoga has paid off!

I swung out for a while...

So I haven't made any new posts in over a month.  You may be asking "well why is that, Ian?"   I've basically spent two months on the road, shooting - making new photos like this one.  Expect to see many more in the coming days!

For those that may be interested, I've recently released three new limited editions of some of my favorite staircase shots (larger at http://bit.ly/1oUGtwQ).  The editions of 10 are giant - 24x36" - signed and numbered on verso.  But the first impression in each - the (1/10) - is available on auction for cheap at eBay!  The link is here: http://bit.ly/1oUGtwQ - so if you're looking for some new art for your walls, this might be your chance!  And if not, but you'd like to help out - share this post so that more people have an opportunity to get in on the action.  :)

Serenity in the Ruins

Another from my most recent roadtrip with Ms Meggo; in order to get this shot, I had to traverse much of the building to get to the other side of the collapse while she got ready to kick up the dust for the "smoke" effect and then quickly hit her pose...

Greeting the morning.

I just got back from two weeks on the road with the incomparably beautiful and talented Ms Meggo, during which we took on several abandoned hotels, a few asylums, and a center for delinquent youth.  Here's the first of many shots from an amazing adventure!

And then, right at the end of the exposure, twopeople... more »

Well, my dear friends and followers, I just noticed that today I ticked up past 25,000 followers!  I'm thrilled and honored that my work is noticed and appreciated by all of you.  As long as you keep watching, I'll keep posting - and in that vein, here's one more of Ms Meggo from this past weekend before I head out on another road trip tomorrow!

Sleep Evasive

On the second day of my roadtrip with model Ms Meggo, we'd slept a mere 3 hours when we entered an asylum and set up a shot during civil twilight - seemed like a good time to explore the theme of insomnia!

Homage to Robert Mapplethorpe

Whenever I see a model posed within a circle, I think of Robert Mapplethorpe's work, and I was thinking of his work with circles when I shot the beautiful and immensely talented Ms Meggo on the first day of our road trip.  Of course, Mapplethorpe used male models, and did not take photographs inside cylinders used to test rocket engines at abandoned military installations.  But it was still an intentional homage.

Life is Good!

Well, some of you might have noticed that I've been relatively absent on Google Plus of late - this is due to writing a book; I've barely shot any new work.  But I just spent 4 days on the road with Ms Meggo, an awesome model out of Baltimore; we hit 4 locations and took 70+ GB of photos - and most importantly, had a great time!  So look for a bunch of new model photographs over the next few weeks, as I have time to edit them.  Here's the last exposure of the trip - we decided to pose for a promotional shot to commemorate an awesome trip!

I just realized that I've been so caught up in this whole "writing my first book" project that I haven't shared anything in ages.  So here's an up-until-recently unpublished photograph from last summer, featuring my friend and model Rayne (raynetupelo.com) and taken in an abandoned insane asylum in Virginia.  I miss you all!  Someday, my book will be off to the publishers, and I will have a life once more.  Meanwhile, I'll try to keep my stream active where I can!

Celebration time!

So I had a deadline unexpectedly pushed forward on me - instead of March, I had to get all of my photos of Buffalo State Hospital finished up by this week.  Which wound up in a roughly 100 hour work week, very little sleep, and canceling all social functions.  Last night, when I finished up and got the last file uploaded to my server, I put on a British murder mystery show and promptly conked out for nearly 12 hours.  But, having a great feeling of accomplishment, I woke today feeling like a normal human being as opposed to a semi-conscious zombie!  So now it's time for celebration - which in my case means a mix of relaxation and photo adventures.  Here's one last photo of Buffalo State Hospital at night, before I completely ignore the place for a few days!

The Best of Memories

This photograph of some patient beds mouldering away in a patient dormitory at Buffalo State Hospital comes from what was probably my most memorable trip to the asylum, with three friends.  We faced difficulty at every turn - at one point, we couldn't find our way past barriers constructed to block the wards off from each other, until we realized that we had to climb the dumbwaiter shaft.  At another point, we broke for lunch just as the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, brilliantly illuminating our picnic area.  We slept on foam insulation, telling stories until we were tired enough to sleep.  When I photograph these places, I'm doing my best to create art.  But I'm also doing my best to create wonderful memories such as these.  Looking at this photograph nearly 8 years later brings them all flooding back!

An Early Success

So of all the negatives I've scanned for my book on Buffalo State Hospital, this is possibly the one I'm proudest of.  It was some time in the early or mid 2000s, and I had just about zero experience with light painting.  But when I came across this vault door in the basement of the Administration Building (the one with the towers), I knew I had to give it a shot.  I had my camera loaded up with 160 ASA portrait film, and now my task was to set up the shot in near-darkness and then figure out my exposure time - as well as to evenly light the scene.

I used a combination of an LED torch and an LED lantern; the lantern allowed me to compose the shot and acted as a key light.  But then I had to figure out exposure.  So I set the lantern up in position near the ground, pointed at an upwards angle, somewhat left of frame.  And I turned on my torch, andpoint... more »

The Joys of Old Negatives

Over 7 years ago, I made perhaps my most memorable trip into Buffalo State Hospital - the asylum I'm currently writing a book on.  Among other things, I was finally able to access and climb into one of the signature towers that mark the building, and bliss out on the roof.

But in 2007, I had a hard drive melt down on me and lost all my scans.  My negatives were all in storage.  So, it's been over six years since I've seen these photographs - I recently dug them out of my storage locker in Charlotte, and have begun scanning in earnest.  It's amazing every time a new image gets realized by my scanner; each negative brings back a wonderful memory.

Like this one.  After goofing off in the Eastern Tower of the Administrative Pavilion with my friends for the better part of an hour, I took a shot down the stairs, back into thebuil... more »

Stairs unsafe - use caution.

In my travels, I come across dodgy staircases on a regular basis.  This one, in the Forst building at Trenton State Hospital, isn't that bad - with a little creative navigation, it was easy enough to surmount the missing stairs and get to the next landing.  In other buildings, it is perhaps more difficult.  To get to the top level of the Beury Building in Philadelphia, it is necessary first to climb a section of stairs that was pulling away from the wall, its railing missing, and then to climb a shaky wooden plank replacing a half-dozen missing steps over a void that led down about 12 stories.  I brought a model there once; she said it was the scariest experience of her life.  I've never seen the top floor of the North wing of the Nurses' Building on North Brother Island.  I tried to climb the remains of the rotting staircase leading upthere... more »

Asylum Camping

The notion of camping out in an abandoned insane asylum, waking up before first light and catching faint glimpses of lighting from outside hitting cracked paint, might not immediately appeal to all.  But it's actually quite a wonderful experience.  Entering a building in the middle of the night, quietly setting up a campsite with minimal light, and then popping off to sleep to wait for your alarm to tell you that you have 10 minutes until you must start your first exposure is a singular feeling.  There is a unique quiet, an omnipresent solitude that inhabits these places that are inhabited by little else.

I had three campsites at Buffalo State Hospital between 2003 and 2008.  The first was rudimentary; it consisted of a group of us sleeping on our jackets in a random room in the central pavilion, right under the giant Romanesque towers.  The second wasslig... more »

Dorm Life

Although the popular vision of the public asylum envisions a single patient in a bedroom, or perhaps roommates sharing a space, common dorms - such as the one pictured here, from Norwich State Hospital - were very common, particularly after the increased overcrowding that began at the end of the 19th century. It was, of course, more cost-effective to house many restful patients in one room, and this allowed nurses and orderlies to keep watch with minimal effort. But one wonders what impact a lack of privacy may have had on the patients of these institutions - solitude only attainable sporadically, and only at the whim of the staff.

Stark Tower

The medical tower at Harlem Valley State Hospital, in Wingdale, NY, is a stark place indeed.  Much like other asylum buildings built on the mid-19th century tower model - Bonner at Danvers, Terrance at Rochester, Cheney at Hudson Valley - every design decision was utilitarian.  Pictured here is a nurses' station overlooking the recovery ward outside the surgical suite in the tower, placed and designed for maximal view in multiple directions, and designed so that nurses could reach patients quickly.  The starkness of this 11th floor scene is emphasized by the early morning light.

Evidence to the Contrary

Buildings F, G, and H at Mayview State Hospital - only two of which still remain - are often referred to as the "tubercular wards".  But were they?  Certainly not at the end of their lifecycles of use.  While their general layout certainly points towards their use as containment buildings for patients infected with pulmonary tuberculosis, this note - found tacked to the back of a door in one of the buildings - makes it clear that their final use, likely in the mid-late Sixties, by the date at bottom left, was as a nurses' residence.  Note the use of "persons" instead of "patients" and the clear level of self-responsibility assigned to residents.  Nevertheless, by the Sixties, Mayview may not have needed tubercular wards, and that could indeed have been their original purpose - further research is required.

Tombstone for The Steel City

Pittsburgh has two notable nicknames.  It is perhaps known best as "The Steel City", in honor of its history as the seat of the American steel industry.  And it is also well known as "The City of Bridges", in honor of the fact that it boasts 446 bridges - more than any other city on earth.  But in this day and age, it seems appropriate to consider retiring the first of these monikers - already declining by the 1970s, the steel industry imploded in the 80s, and has largely vanished from the city and its outlying regions.

Perhaps the best memorial for the city's steel industry are Carrie Furnaces #6 and #7, the last remaining non-operational furnaces in the area, operated from 1907 to 1978 and located just outside of the city in Ranking.  Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, these furnaces were a part of theeno... more »

Be Quick or Be Dead

Being a modern ruins photographer can be stressful.  When I heard about the imminent destruction of the Clocktower building at Worcester State Hospital, I knew I had to get out there as quickly as possible for a final round of photos - I hadn't been inside since 2006.  This stately building - the centerpiece of a grand Kirkbride-plan insane asylum in central Massachusetts - was being demolished because the state couldn't be bothered to stabilize it; there was talk of saving the actual clocktower, and we'll see where that goes.  But in any case, within weeks of hearing, I'd made it from North Carolina out to MA, hopped the three fences standing between myself and the building, and found my way inside.  I spent some glorious final hours shooting during the best lighting conditions I've ever seen in that building, and then it was time to scamperbef... more »

I debated on whether to post this link here, I'm so embarrassed.  At this point, 30% of my blog's readers are from France, another 22% from Great Britain.  I can't see Paris commissioning the destruction of a Rodin; I can't see Downing Street pouring acid on a Picasso.

But I live here, in the USA.  Where we trash historic buildings as if they mean nothing.  They're trying to bury this one ASAP - the Samuel Sloan designed Kirkbride building at Greystone apparently deserves no consideration.  And now that a number of firms are putting plans on the ground that show adaptive reuse - they're going to level it, ASAP.
