Landscape Photography Show13,036*Landscape Photography Show #47: Fill the Frame* "Fill the Frame" is often the first advice given to a beginning photographer.  That's what we will focus on in this event.  For landscape photographs, that can be done in one of two ways.  1. Do it with through the viewfinder.  Move yourself to the proper location and angle or zoom in/out if your camera does this until you get a pleasing image that "fills the frame".  You don't want any extra space or elements that will distract from your composition.   2. Crop your photo to eliminate that meaningless extra space that doesn't contribute to your composition and eliminate distracting elements. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have "Filled the Frame". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. THE COMMENT IS REQUIRED. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) Curators of the @114888971165518552849 and the @105588730866970114510 theme may participate. 8) Technical Requirements: Enable "sharing" on your photo.  If it receives honors, we want to be able to share it!!  Enable "comments" on your photo.  We want to say how great it is!!  Enable "plus ones" so everyone can give it a big plus!! *Voting:* Feel free to leave positive encouraging comments on the entries at any time.  You know our photographers will love the attention.  Engage in conversation and see what you can learn!! *AFTER Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT (when the event ends) and BEFORE Friday, July 31, 2015 at noon CDT, you may add another comment and include the hashtag, #LPSFavorite LPS Event #47: Fill the Frame2015-07-20 17:00:00400

Landscape Photography Show13,036*Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds* In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.  We're continuing with this strong rule of composition by looking at the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  This event will be starting later today so you have a chance to carefully read all the rules. Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Remember in the last event that you imagined two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divided the space into three equal spaces.  Now, also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later.  For now, we will focus on the vertical lines.  Does your landscape have a strong vertical element that you want to capture?  Let's say it's a single tree.  We often like to put that tree smack dab in the center of the photo.  We may capture the tree but the photograph is boring.  Try putting that tree along one of the vertical lines separating the space into thirds.  Now the photograph has some drama and added interest.   That's what we want practice with this event.  Use one of your vertical lines to capture a strong vertical element.  Don't forget the Horizontal Rule of Thirds and Horizon that we had in the last event.  We want both rules of composition used in this event!! Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.    *1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.*   *2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.*   *3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.* *4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.*    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 3) OnlyLPS Event #45: Vertical Rule Of Thirds2015-06-22 19:00:00417

Landscape Photography Show13,036*Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds* Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Imagine two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divides the space into three equal spaces.  Also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later and also the vertical lines.  This event will focus on those horizontal lines. Study your landscape BEFORE you shoot.  In the viewfinder, place the horizon on one of those horizontal rule-of-thirds lines.  You will have 1/3 sky and 2/3 ground or 2/3 sky and 1/3 ground.  That composition is very pleasing to the viewer.  Having your horizon dead center is often boring and not interesting.   Horizons should be level!!  If you have sky and water, then having the horizon level is a MUST!!   If you have sky and ground, the "level" becomes more complicated.  If your horizon is very curvy with rolling hills for example, you won't have a level horizon and that's OK.  Your mind's eye knows that hills aren't level.  If your horizon is the boundary between sky and land and only a slight hill, you're mind's eye won't find it appealing when looking at the photograph of that view because the horizon isn't level.   You can trick your mind's eye by adding a vertical element to the composition that the viewer will "know" is vertical such as a tree.  You might put that vertical tree on one of those vertical rule-of-thirds lines.  Your mind knows that the tree is vertical and won't mind an unlevel horizon. Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.  You might try getting added drama with 10-20% sky and 80-90% ground or vice versa.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a horizon using the horizontal rule-of-thirds.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the horizontal rule-of-thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.  Feel free to leave comments and discuss on the main event as well. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) *You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don'tLPS Event #44: Horizon - Rule of Thirds2015-06-08 17:00:00584

Art through the Apeture Photography (Paula)11,495There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! The Barn
You can probably find this barn in every second National Park calendar, it is Thomas Alma Moulton's Barn, and is standing in the Antelope Flats in Grand Teton National Park, WY.
I only have an evening shot; supposedly the light and view are much better in the mornings, when the sun illuminates the mountains (and the barn front, of course). Still a place worth going to  - I love the serenity it radiates.

Val Passiria / Passeier Valley
This view opens right when you cross into Alto Adige, Italy, coming from Austria over the Passorombo / Timmelsjoch.
From my motorbike days, I remember this pass as one of the most impressive; you work your way slowly up on the Austrian side, mostly between mountains, and it feels like it takes forever, and suddenly the view onto Italy opens up, showing valleys and drops of nearly 5000 feet elevation difference.

Dresdner Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady)
This well-known church is located in the capital of Saxony; it was destroyed in the bombings of WW II, and only rebuilt after the reunification of Germany, as a symbol of reconciliation. It has one of the largest domes in Europe, and an impressive Protestant baroque architecture. I'll show the interior in another post.

Island in the Sky
Canyonlands National Park, my #1 destination recommendation for anyone interested in nature and visiting the US (ok, I have only seen 28 National Parks yet; but from those, this is my #1).
This is the view to the West, after you walk from Grandview Point all the way to the tip of the Island in the Sky (and climb on top of it - on your own risk!). Check the two ladies in the foreground for scale.

Danger
I picked this shot more for the view than for the sign. It was already getting dark, so I had to use ISO 12800, which obviously results in some quality loss... I hope you like the feel anyway.
This is taken on the Pacific Coast in Northern CA, on Crescent Beach Overlook.

This one is designated as an Outstanding Natural Area by the BLM, and can be found along Hole-in-the-Rock-Road, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Not Pluto.
Contrary to most other pictures you see today in the internet, this is not Pluto - it is a view from Leadfield Road on the way into Titus Canyon, just about at the NV/CA border, in Death Valley National Park.
The mountains present themselves quite colorful, as in many places in Death Valley NP. Minerals of all kinds are found in the rocks, which makes them that motley.

Make sure to take the short (but steep) trail to Saddle Pass, for this and other great views of Badlands National Park, SD.
The colored bands in the rock are pretty impressive, as is the rugged terrain.

Question to the more knowledgeable people: Where would the radial structure within the blue of the sky come from? The sun was in my back, but they seem to radiate out from behind the horizon, that doesn't make sense. Could that be a lens error??
