Landscape Photography Show13,477*Landscape Photography Show #47: Fill the Frame* "Fill the Frame" is often the first advice given to a beginning photographer.  That's what we will focus on in this event.  For landscape photographs, that can be done in one of two ways.  1. Do it with through the viewfinder.  Move yourself to the proper location and angle or zoom in/out if your camera does this until you get a pleasing image that "fills the frame".  You don't want any extra space or elements that will distract from your composition.   2. Crop your photo to eliminate that meaningless extra space that doesn't contribute to your composition and eliminate distracting elements. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have "Filled the Frame". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. THE COMMENT IS REQUIRED. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) Curators of the @114888971165518552849 and the @105588730866970114510 theme may participate. 8) Technical Requirements: Enable "sharing" on your photo.  If it receives honors, we want to be able to share it!!  Enable "comments" on your photo.  We want to say how great it is!!  Enable "plus ones" so everyone can give it a big plus!! *Voting:* Feel free to leave positive encouraging comments on the entries at any time.  You know our photographers will love the attention.  Engage in conversation and see what you can learn!! *AFTER Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT (when the event ends) and BEFORE Friday, July 31, 2015 at noon CDT, you may add another comment and include the hashtag, #LPSFavorite LPS Event #47: Fill the Frame2015-07-20 17:00:00398

Landscape Photography Show13,477*Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds* In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.  We're continuing with this strong rule of composition by looking at the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  This event will be starting later today so you have a chance to carefully read all the rules. Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Remember in the last event that you imagined two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divided the space into three equal spaces.  Now, also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later.  For now, we will focus on the vertical lines.  Does your landscape have a strong vertical element that you want to capture?  Let's say it's a single tree.  We often like to put that tree smack dab in the center of the photo.  We may capture the tree but the photograph is boring.  Try putting that tree along one of the vertical lines separating the space into thirds.  Now the photograph has some drama and added interest.   That's what we want practice with this event.  Use one of your vertical lines to capture a strong vertical element.  Don't forget the Horizontal Rule of Thirds and Horizon that we had in the last event.  We want both rules of composition used in this event!! Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.    *1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.*   *2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.*   *3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.* *4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.*    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 3) OnlyLPS Event #45: Vertical Rule Of Thirds2015-06-22 19:00:00413

Landscape Photography Show13,477*Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds* Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Imagine two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divides the space into three equal spaces.  Also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later and also the vertical lines.  This event will focus on those horizontal lines. Study your landscape BEFORE you shoot.  In the viewfinder, place the horizon on one of those horizontal rule-of-thirds lines.  You will have 1/3 sky and 2/3 ground or 2/3 sky and 1/3 ground.  That composition is very pleasing to the viewer.  Having your horizon dead center is often boring and not interesting.   Horizons should be level!!  If you have sky and water, then having the horizon level is a MUST!!   If you have sky and ground, the "level" becomes more complicated.  If your horizon is very curvy with rolling hills for example, you won't have a level horizon and that's OK.  Your mind's eye knows that hills aren't level.  If your horizon is the boundary between sky and land and only a slight hill, you're mind's eye won't find it appealing when looking at the photograph of that view because the horizon isn't level.   You can trick your mind's eye by adding a vertical element to the composition that the viewer will "know" is vertical such as a tree.  You might put that vertical tree on one of those vertical rule-of-thirds lines.  Your mind knows that the tree is vertical and won't mind an unlevel horizon. Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.  You might try getting added drama with 10-20% sky and 80-90% ground or vice versa.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a horizon using the horizontal rule-of-thirds.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the horizontal rule-of-thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.  Feel free to leave comments and discuss on the main event as well. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) *You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don'tLPS Event #44: Horizon - Rule of Thirds2015-06-08 17:00:00578

In the Subway
This natural 'subway tunnel' is rather difficult to reach, aside from the permit you need, it is a long hike in and out over sticks and stones, or a technical descent through a tough canyon (and still a long hike out). What we did not expect is that the cool-looking section is really very short (basically only what is on the shot), but still, it is such a unique formation that it is worth the effort. Zion National Park.

Chiesa di Sant'Agostino
The second largest church in San Gimignano, Italy, after the Collegiata, and owned by the Order of Saint Augustine.
Sant'Agostino is an imposing 13th century building, with seventeen-panel fresco cycle on The Life of St Augustine around the high altar, painted by Benozzo Gozzoli between 1463 and 1467. The altarpiece is the Coronation of the Virgin by Piero del Pollaiuolo (1483).

Château de Versailles
The court of Versailles was the center of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV, Le Roi-Soleil (Sun King), moved there from Paris, until 1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.
This is a pano combined from seven shots I made in March 2003.

Père Lachaise Cemetery
Paris, France.
I am not sure what this sign wants to tell us - I think it is a common depiction related to the french national motto 'Liberté, égalité, fraternité', symbolizing the fight they all fought to get La Grande Nation.
Sorry if I made you all wait today, i had a minor accident while mountain biking, which delayed me a bit.

P.S.: This shot is from 2003...

Casa Belvedere, Toscana
This famous hill near San Quirico d'Orcia in the Tuscany has been photographed a lot and by many people, and mine is surely not the best (my excuse is that the weather was poor... and maybe I am just not the best). However, going there in person and seeing it in real made all the difference. The whole area is a dream come alive, I spent hours slowly driving around and taking pictures everywhere.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Franziskanerkirche Salzburg
There has been a church on this site since the 8th century, which was rebuilt in the Romanesque era; it was extended and received makeovers multiple times later. Therefore, the Franziskanerkirche is an especially fascinating church to visit due to its unique mixture of architectural styles. The Romanesque nave is still visible inside the church, and a 12th-century marble lion from that period is set into the pulpit steps. The tall, well-lit Gothic choir (1408-50) is supported by slender purplish columns, which reach up to an elaborate rib vault.
