Rob Salzman18,074This circle is the third of four containing people who've commented on content I share.  They make my stream come alive with compelling, interesting discussions.  If you want your stream to be active, you won't do better then including them.   Fair warning:  Some of these people are willing to take a stand that may be different then those I'd take.  :)2013-02-01 18:25:26500315
Shells Bells5,180Best of 2012 CircleThis circle is some of the G+ awesomeness that has enriched my life this year - and I am grateful.  A while back +Sean Cowen asked what G+ has meant to us.  After watching Brene Brown's TEDTalks (http://www.ted.com/speakers/brene_brown.html) I realize that for me, G+ has been a lesson in vulnerability and courage. I have been humbled by the courage of every one of you.  I love that women post no make-up pictures and that you all speak your minds (your clever, creative, crazy & beautiful minds...). I have been blown away by the public sharing regarding topics as deep as abuse and depression - talk about vulnerability and putting yourself out there - absolutely amazing.  By doing so, you have helped others in ways you may never know.  <3Inspiration's what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.  Led Zeppelin - Thank YouYou have inspired me. (warning TL:DR personal stuff below) Oh, & I did include some new peeps.  If they're freaks, blame +Ben Zaitz. This month, I gathered some courage and let three people see me in, what was to me, a position of vulnerability. The first was a very dear friend from Elementary School.  For the past few years, I avoided HIRLing because I was ashamed of my weight and I guess I didn't want to disappoint him.  The same reason recently kept me from seeing a dear High School friend.  I saw them and each did not care that I was not perfect, they love me for me.  Mann, it was great to see their faces again, talk in person and have some non-virtual hugs.  <3I attribute this change in thinking to your responses to a July post: https://plus.google.com/115807723984369772514/posts/Ui2TQBPuELKAmong the other awesome words from you peeps, +Alvin Stearns wrote, "Never again compare yourself to others so that you make unfair and useless judgments about yourself or others.  That includes comparing yourself to you in the past."  The third was that, with your encouragement on a private post, I actually asked a guy out.  I would have never even considered doing that a year ago.  (He has a gf, so no deal, but it's all good cause he was cool.)I know these are little things, but I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  And thank you to +matthew rappaport, Bobbi Jo Woods and +Tiffany Henry for coordinating the first NYCHIRL. Due to my kiddies, I couldn't see +Daria Musk and +Ryan Van Sickle2012-12-31 06:09:4450026231
Rob Salzman16,639Friday Circle Share:  This is the third of three circles that contains the people who make my streams come alive.  These are the passionate, witty, intellegent people who comment.   I may not agree with them, but I always learn somthing from them.  Fair warning.  Not everyone in this circle is a leftie.  :)2012-12-28 23:07:58459305

Joe Winpisinger0I have been blogging recently about the Power of Google+ circles for business. But the same go for Politics as well. Why is this? Google+ has a very good chance of being the next evolution of email marketing. I hear you already saying that you are not a marketer. If you are a political activist yes you are. Leaving that aside, any of us that are politically active probably have an email list of people that we send political information too from time to time. With Google+ that is easier than ever. All you have to do is circle them from Gmail and click on the check box when it asks if you want to email your update. If you do not have Gmail you can add them right into a circle by putting in the email. Why is this any different than regular email? This is because if you can eventually talk them into upgrading their account they not only get your emails, they have a circle of people that they can interact with. Seth Godin puts the power of this like this, "If you take a group of people, a subgroup of the larger population, and expose them to focused messages again and again, you will start to change their point of view. If you augment those messages with exposure to other members of the group, the messages will begin to have ever more impact. If the group becomes aligned, and it starts acting like a tribe, those messages will become self-reinforcing. And finally, if you anoint and reward leaders of this tribe, single them out for positive attention because of the way your message resonated with them, it will become fully baked in.That's a lot of power. Probably too much for the selfish marketer, lobbyist or demagogue to have at his disposal"Tribe building is what it is all about and Google+ make this easier than ever. All you have to do is put interest circles together, share the circle like I am doing now, and then ask who wants to receive more notifications from time to time. Most people are honored to be included in a circle that is being shared that they not only add the circle with one click they agree to receiving notifications. Add yourself into the circle and with each quick you added into another circle. More importantly you have other like minded people to network with and did not have to do any of the work to put the group together. I have interacted with everyone in this circle personally. Some more than others. But all are interested in politics and like to share their views. I like to learn from others and usually learn the most from those I do not agree with. So do not be afraid to reach out beyond your bubble and interact with people with different views. It adds to the discussion. Please let me know if you want to go into my "Politics" notifications circle by hitting +1 or commenting. I will send updates one of twice a month on important topics. I will also include Google+ and maybe other general social media tips as well.  I introduce you all to one another and hope a lot of good will come out of this.2012-10-11 00:12:0852104

Armando Lioss14,536“Active Engagers Shared Circle” 4.6Also known as the “Circle of Rivals” conformed by G+ users ready to stand for their points of view in an educated discussion and/or extending the discussion to their own streams... if you are looking into making your stream more dynamic, these are the guys you want to include... they are a diverse bunch of great plussers that include liberals, progressives, conservatives, libertarians, religious, agnostics, atheists… from all around the world. In this shared circle you will find some interesting people to add to your circles, all of these G+ users currently actively engage my stream as well as other G+ users posts, so you can be sure they are getting involved in the Google Plus community. This “Active Engagers Shared Circle” version has been built with an improved algorithm that will filter occasional users and those that use hate speech or other nuisances to the common user. The main purpose of this series of Shared Circles is to expose new G+ users that are active engagers, but you may find even first generation ones in them.If you do not wish to be included in my future shared circles, please let me know with a comment to this post. James Bowie0Based on the feedback I am getting from the people in it I must share again. People are reporting over 300 people in 5 days!! That is how we keep #googleplusisawesome I consider most of these people real friends now it is fantastic! Add them to your circle you will see what I mean!Yes, every one matters equally on G+, but these are the folks that #influence and are #engagers who in one way or another have helped me or have directly made my G+ experience more than awesome. They also have intelligent things to say and produce quality content. Most of them have less than 2000k followers with some exceptions you might recognize. Again, ALL deserve respect. That is how we keep #googleplusisawesome I consider most of these people real friends now it is fantastic! Rae O.5,343Not everyone has read or seen +Sean Cowen's epic post from Sunday and the comments (which is the best read on G+), here is the link to the original post:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103333429938529668020/posts/dGTBdCvPgnfThe comments have reached 500 so Sean started a new post so it can continue. https://plus.google.com/u/0/103333429938529668020/posts/fWcJTso8d1gWhat is this circle you may ask? It is everyone who commented on the original post with their two things. Why am I sharing it? Because these people were all willing to share stories about themselves and to include other people. I am sure in a thread that long that I may have missed some people and it is not a circle of 500 because people like me commented more than once. If you enjoyed what you read and want to add everyone at once, this is the circle. I named it Sean Cowen's Best Post circle. Also, if you are looking for your comment in that thread, or of someone else's: to find in this long string of comments, open the post in a seperate window, and then do a Find on this Page.cc: +CircleCount +Public Circles +Circle Plus +Shared Circles on G+2012-03-20 16:30:07280331733
Tania Walters104“Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2GPlussers, this is the latest version of my “Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2, a difference of other shared circles that include users with the most wonderful pictures, or those with the most number of users, or the nicest people in G+; this “Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2 just includes the GPlussers that are making Google Plus a great experience, with their frequent interaction, in the form of comments, shares or +1’s. All these GPlussers have interacted with my posts on the last week so you know they are currently active and willing to enjoy, share and comment on any good post.Disclaimer: This “Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2 includes GPlussers with different interests and a variety of political positions. I don’t necessary agree with all their opinions, but I certainly respect their point of views… even if while I was adding some of them to this circle I was trying to kick my own… well you get the point…I recommend you to make your best to hook these guys to your circle and the best way to make them circle you back is having some great public posts in your stream before you add them to your circle, follow the following tips to make the best of your Google Plus adventure…TIPS TO GET PEOPLE TO CIRCLE YOU.First thing, go to your profile and fill out the “About” tab, it is very important that you try to fill this out as much as possible, you may want to avoid personal information like your address and phone number, after all it is the Internet. A lot of people before circling you back will review this page and won’t circle you if it is blank. At least you should fill the Introduction, Bragging rights (something that catch the eye, brag about yourself), and Places lived. Also, it is very important to change the default photo, as beginner I would recommend to put one of your best pictures where the other Google Plus users can see your face, then later change it with your pet picture or whatever you want to have as your avatar. It is very important when you start that people feel like is getting to know you so they can feel confident to circle you back… don’t put that picture your friends shoot last time you fall asleep at that party… leave it for later, when enough people have circled you back..Don’t hide your information, there is nothing wrong with being new to Google Plus and don’t having too many people in your circles or not too many people that circled you back. A lot of people, like me, won’t be really inclined to circle back somebody that hides this information, it could be a troll or a spammer. I will remove you from this and any future shared circle I create, but I will keep you in my G+ circles.Furthermore, with each version I try to include new active engagers that are looking to meet other GPlussers to interact with, but I understand the old users may not have as much interest to meet new users and won’t circle them back, so I will prefer including users that really want to interact with new users. For TIPS TO GET PEOPLE TO CIRCLE YOU you may want to check: https://plus.google.com/u/0/111635150542674847021/posts/Q6c3ikBhdT3Para ser incluidos en mi Círculo “Posts en Español” déjenme una nota: https://plus.google.com/u/0/111635150542674847021/posts/QUCDRtgVoNTThank you for your help making Google Plus adventure and exhilarating one…#SharedCircle #CircleShare #ActiveUsers #Engagers #Commenters #TopCirclesP.S. _Several engagers were left out due to shared circle limits... you will be included on future circles...-2012-03-18 18:09:48500191726
Armando Lioss8,419“Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2GPlussers, this is the latest version of my “Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2, a difference of other shared circles that include users with the most wonderful pictures, or those with the most number of users, or the nicest people in G+; this “Active Engagers Shared Circle” v1.2 just includes the GPlussers that are making Google Plus a great experience, with their frequent interaction, in the form of comments, shares or +1’s. Besides, looking to the people you have in your circle and who circle you back may help to get somebody to circle you back, it has happened to me when I do not find enough posts from a user that interest me, I check their circle and if I find people that I know as interesting, I assume there is potential for this person to become interesting as well. Before you start adding people to your circle, fill your stream with great stuff. Armando Lioss7,406How to Get People to Circle YouIf you don’t want to get bored, jump to the tips and skip my blah blah blah…This weekend has being snowing and a bit cold for my taste, so I spent it social networking most of it… I had a chance to chat with a bunch of friends in FB and find out that several of them have tried Google Plus and gave up, because they couldn’t make friends… the word was “it is boring”, “it is dead”, “nobody friends you back for weeks”, “I have sent invitations to 100’s and just a couple friend me back”, …Well, been in FB myself for a while I can understand the culture, but the first thing one needs to be aware of is that this is not FB, here we have circles and we don’t send invitations, we circle the people that we find interesting, the goal is not to have a lot of friends, but to find people with the same interests, those we find amusing, entertaining, we can learn from or connect with. Yes, ideally we want to connect too and that is why it is not that important to have a lot of friends, but get the ones that share our interests so we can interact with them, but not all the people in your circles will circle you back. As you add people to your circle your stream will run faster and you don’t want to flood your stream with posts that you don’t care about, so make sure you circle the right people. The following are some pointers to get people to circle you back, most of it based on my own preferences, what I have learned from others in Google Plus and the errors I have seen chatting with my FB friends.TIPS TO GET PEOPLE TO CIRCLE YOU. First thing, go to your profile and fill out the “About” tab, it is very important that you try to fill this out as much as possible, you may want to avoid personal information like your address and phone number, after all it is the Internet. Every single one of my FB friends that complained about not getting “friends” got this page blank. We're talking about the people battling pseudoscientific nonsense and irrational beliefs with reason and evidence. As always, I recommend you import these folks into a brand new circle, so you can replace them when I reshare my circle again in the future. If I've missed anyone, please let me know.2011-12-03 02:31:2210818814

Jules Sherred0At the request of +James Russell I've created a circle of interesting geeks. These people range from musicians, scientists, bloggers, photographers, artists, writers and more. I have such a variety of interests, I don't group people based on what they do, but rather how I met them. I know I have a lot of people missing, but right now, my circles are a mess. It is not intentional. My family greatly benefits from Obamacare, I work full time, but being able to get my wife the medical care she needs was just out of reach. The Medicare expansion(OHP in Oregon) here was made possible by grants from Obamacare, without it we would have continued to wait in the adult lottery for access to OHP.

I may not agree with the entire program, or with this President on much, but I do greatly appreciate what Obamacare has done for my family. The law should not be repealed and replaced, it should be amended and made more efficient.

This is what globalization looks like, Chinese company, Chinese customers, listed on American Stock exchange. We may have lost millions of jobs, and the corresponding billions of dollars in Tax revenue, but parts of our society have gained tremendously(hint the tax code needs to reflect a global marketplace, not just a series of national ones, to smooth out the gains).
Anyone invested in any of the brokerage firms that got shares, or are invested in the indecies themselves, will benefit from this IPO. Even despite our insane tax code the Federal government and the State of NY will benefit tremendously from this IPO.

Bittersweet pills in this months job report, we have just barely surpassed where we were six years ago. Half a decade of growth lost and more to probably come with the actual labor market remaining fragile and weak.

Average hourly earnings grew by a single penny in July (to $24.45), and have grown just 2 percent over the past 12 months. This suggests that even though unemployment is coming down, the labor market is still weak. Theoretically, if there was healthy competition in the job market, companies would be offering higher wages, and we aren’t seeing that yet.

For me personally this part rang particularly true, I am today making just a lil over 5% more than what I was making back in 2008.

If this pans out it could be the beginning of a huge explosion in intra-solar exploration. A constant impulse engine that requires little to no fuel would open up most of the solar system to human exploration in the same way that improvements in hull technology opened up the "new world" to the Europeans.

Weeks to Mars a month or so to Jupiter and the asteroid belt means that vast quantities of valuable minerals without any of the environmental concerns or legal issues surrounding ownership suddenly become available.

Not only does the free thirty day trial give access to a huge selection of "free" books, it also comes with a free 90 day "trial"(or renewal if you aren't currently active) to Audible.

While you don't get to keep the ebooks if you stop paying, but the audible books you get to keep forever. Totally worth doing the free trial.

The recess appointment of 3 members to the NLRB was invalid because 3 days is an insufficient break in session for the President to act under the recess appointment clause. It appears that the minimum, baring exigent circumstances, is 10 days. http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/12-1281_bodg.pdf

On the recess appointment case I predict that from here on out the Senate, when not of the same party as the President, will never break for more than 3 days.

From the SCOTUS opinions today:

Aereo is no different than a traditional cable company and as such must pay licensing fees. (6-3 ruling) http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/13-461_l537.pdf

Cell-phones cannot be searched without a warrant during an arrest except when there are exigent circumstances, like a missing child or bombs exploding. (Unanimous ruling with Alito concurring in part and on judgement) http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/13-132_8l9c.pdf

The third case was about Employee Stock ownership plans : Court held that fiduciaries are held to a prudence standard, but that does not necessarily mean that they have to diversify. (this case is so far outside of my knowledge base that I struggled to understand exactly what it all meant) http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/12-751_d18e.pdf

This is what regulatory capture looks like folks - just like our Healthcare system is the worst and most expensive in the Industrialized world, on average, so too will our internet infrastructure/service. We are already paying more for less than any other industrialized nation, I can only imagine how this will get worse.

The beauty of all of these discussions happening online is that it is quite similar to what happened during the Renaissance. With more people than ever thinking, debating, and discussing deep philosophical questions who knows what new modes of living or thinking will emerge.

The web we have created has facilitated much more than just facile memes, kitten photos, porn, and flame wars. It has enabled, for the first time in human history, the the widespread dissemination of information and provided a platform for any and all to build upon to hawk their ideas, services, wares, and yes even what they had for dinner last night.

It has done this, in much the same way as Coffee houses and Salons, by providing equal footing for participants. Just like many of the ideas that were bandied about at those Coffee houses were forgotten, so too will much of the "frivolous" content that we all generate daily. But the good stuff, the truly revolutionary ideas will froth up and change society.

Because the thing is, no one knows that the next big idea will be. And if no one truly knows, then there is no ideal way to plan or drive towards it.

That all depends on neutrality though, which is under threat by lack of action by the FCC, who has refused to regulate ISPs as telecommunication services.

If we can maintain an equal footing among content creators and users alike we will look back at this time, turbulent as it is, as the "Enlightenment of the Commoner". Imagine what kind of world we could leave to our descendants if ours was the time that spawned their great thinkers.

Just as there was a push to electrify the whole nation, and not just those who could afford it(we used to believe in Enlightened Self-interest), there needs to be a push to network the whole nation. The more people who connect, the more discussions there can be. The more discussions there are, the more likely a revolutionary idea or way of thinking is to be found.

When we aren't active in our governments, other interests fill the void. Be heard by your government by participating in it beyond just voting once every four years.

Call, text, tweet, snail-mail or email your members of congress, go to your local city councils, stay in contact with your State legislators too, and always comment during open comments on federal regulations. Money may have power, but voices have just as much when spoken in unison.

While some of the gestures were crude, I can imagine this being a very good way to incorporate gestures for desktop pcs in a non-gimmicky way.

I would imagine though that for anyone doing image/video editing or anything else that required precision movements the good ole fashion mouse would still be superior.

But for chilling on the couch it would be nice if I didn't have to use a mouse.

A Motion-Sensing, Gesture-Controlled Mechanical Keyboard

This keyboard can sense "motion gestures performed both on and directly above the device" using infrared sensors interspersed with the keys of a regular keyboard. I want one! Much better than holding up your arms awkwardly to use other motion-sensing tech like that Leap Motion thing.

Read more about it here:

Senate starts debate today on a minimum wage increase. Should the minimum wage be be raised to account for inflation?

Given that the minimum wage is far below what it was, in purchasing power terms, in the 70s, and given that productivity of workers is at all time highs, it only seems fair that the minimum wage should be a wage that, if worked full time, guarantees that one won't be below the poverty line.

Extraordinarily, each was the first licensed female medical doctor in their country of origin. They were trained at the Women's Medical College in Pennsylvania, the first of its kind in the country. This was a time before women had the right to vote. If they did attend college at all, it was at the risk of contracting "neuralgia, uterine disease, hysteria, and other derangements of the nervous system” (according to Harvard gynecologist Edward H. Clarke).

An all-woman medical school was first proposed in 1846, supported by the Quakers and the feminist movement. Dr. Ellwood Harvey, one of the early teaching faculty, daringly smuggled out a slave, Ann Maria Weems, dressed as a male buggy driver, from right outside the White House. With his reward money, he bought his students a  papier maché dissection mannequin. Eventually, poverty forced him to quit teaching, but he still helped out with odd jobs. What a magnificent man!

Fate and fortune were to buffet Ms. Joshi's life. Married at age 9 to a man 11 years older, her husband turned out to be surprisingly progressive. After she lost her first child at age 14, she vowed to render to her "poor suffering country women the true medical aid they so sadly stand in need of and which they would rather die than accept at the hands of a male physician". She was first offered a scholarship by a missionary on condition that she converted to Christianity. When she demurred, a wealthy socialite from New Jersey stepped in and financed her education. She is believed to be the first Hindu woman to set foot on American soil. I didn't arrive until 1983 ;)

Times were tough then. The fate of these three intrepid pioneers was a sad one. Joshi died of tuberculosis in India at the age of 21, without ever practicing. Fittingly, her husband sent her ashes back to America. Islambouli was not heard of again, likely because she was never allowed to practice in her home country. Although Okami rose to the position of head of gynecology at a Tokyo hospital, she resigned two years later when the Emperor of Japan refused to meet her because she was a woman.

Times have changed. My own mother was married at the age of 13 to a man also 11 years her senior. My father recalls helping my mother with her geography homework in high school. She never did attend college, despite being a charismatic woman with quicksilver wit and efficiency. Little wonder then, when I was accepted into graduate school in the US, unmarried and 21 years young, my parents staunchly stood behind me against the dire predictions of friends and relatives ("She'll come back with a yellow haired American!" "Haven't you read Cosmopolitan magazine? They are all perverts there!"). Happily, I escaped perversion, earned my doctoral degree and even gained a supportive spouse of my own. In 2004, I became only the 103rd woman to be promoted to Professor in the 111-year history of the Johns Hopkins medical school, and the first in my department, the oldest Physiology department in the country. If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

All theological disputes aside, the science behind how artifacts like this are verified is truly fascinating.

If the papyrus fragment reflects religious writing copied from earlier texts, perhaps ones in the fourth century, it would speak to early Christian concerns about the role of the family in the early Church, which famously called upon its adherents to put aside family and civic loyalties, she suggests.

This is not evidence that Jesus was married. We don't know," King emphasized. "But early Christians were extremely interested in questions about whether they should be married or be celibate".

This isn't actually a joke, while many equate access to the internet as access to cat photos and status updates, in reality access to the internet represents access to information, of all kinds. Several Nations and even the United Nations already consider access to the internet a basic human right.

The internet is more than just a place most of us visit/create everyday, it is a cultural tool that is only rivaled by fire, agriculture, and refrigeration. We are only just beginning to see the benefits from access to the sum of all humanity knowledge has on the individual, but if the social media driven democratic revolutions, as messy as they are, are any this access will dramatically alter the course of humanity.
