The Spider Nebula
The spider part of "The Spider and the Fly" nebulae, IC 417 abounds in star formation, as seen in this infrared image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS).

Located in the constellation Auriga, IC 417 lies about 10,000 light-years away. It is in the outer part of the Milky Way, almost exactly in the opposite direction from the galactic center. This region was chosen as the subject of a research project by a group of students, teachers and scientists as part of the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program (NITARP) in 2015.

Probing Dark Energy
Researchers are using a large sample of galaxy cluster to investigate dark energy. The details of X-ray emission from over 300 galaxy clusters were obtained with Chandra. The galaxy clusters range in distance from about 760 million to 8.7 billion light years from Earth. The study shows that dark energy has not changed over billions of years.

These four galaxy clusters were part of a large survey of over 300 clusters used to investigate dark energy, the mysterious energy that is currently driving the accelerating expansion of the Universe, as described in our latest press release. In these composite images, X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (purple) have been combined with optical light from the Hubble Space Telescope and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (red, green, and blue).

Makemake, the Dwarf Planet and its Moon MK 2
Image Type: Illustration
Makemake is one of several dwarf planets that reside in the frigid outer realm of our solar system called the Kuiper Belt, a "junkyard" of countless icy bodies left over from our solar system's formation.

After discovering Makemake in 2005, astronomers had searched several times for a companion orbiting the icy world. Now, the Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered a tiny moon around Makemake that is estimated to be 100 miles wide. Nicknamed MK 2, the moon is more than 1,300 times fainter than Makemake, which is 870 miles across. MK 2 is 13,000 miles away from the dwarf planet

With the HTC vive and oculus rift hitting consumer hands is this the tipping point for VR/AR or do we still have a ways to go for wide spread adoption and use beyond the initial novelty. Will it be industry adoption or games that puts the knee in the curve.

Galactic fountains of gas, such as those erupting from nearby galaxy Hercules A, appear to be aligned among a dozen remote galaxies, a new study suggests

“Naively we expect that shouldn’t happen,” says Ryan Hickox, an astrophysicist at Dartmouth College who was not involved with this study. Black holes, even supermassive ones, are minuscule compared with filaments of galaxies that can span hundreds of millions of light-years. These filaments are the threads along which most matter in the universe congregates, branching through space like a cosmic spider web. Though galaxies live there, they are thought to form and develop independently of what the filaments are doing. A twisting filament should have no influence over what’s happening around one of its resident black holes.

And yet that’s the explanation favored by study lead Russ Taylor, an astrophysicist at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. “What we’re seeing is the result of a very large region in the early universe spinning coherently in the same direction,” he says. If that’s true, it adds a “new wrinkle to explain how large-scale structure formed.”___

Hubble has had 26 years of amazing photos but it has also benefited life on earth. The software fix for its blurry vision has been used to improve mammogram and cancer detection. Space exploration #forthebenefitofall

On this day in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery.

Despite an early case of myopia, has gone on to vastly exceed its intended lifespan, peering deeper into space that any other telescope. But perhaps its most valuable contribution to humanity was an unexpected one: software that was developed to improve Hubble’s blurry images also improved breast cancer detection.

Any idea on who has the inside track for the role
Although the reveal of the new companion comes in 2016, fans still have to wait until 2017 for a full season of the series, although a Christmas special will air this year. To make things even harder on viewers, the 2017 season will also serve as the last for showrunner Steven Moffat, who plans on handing over the reins to Chris Chibnall.

Cut one head off and two more will take its place
Reddit tried to make sense of the many factions of Hydra. Not sure it is a complete picture of what has been laid out in the MCU (mostly +Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and +Agent Carter )

Clickbait title since it is really disingenuous to call it a plan let alone grand
Coming Jan 2017 comes a new president and that means pivot (a betting man would say international effort to the Moon ) there is some technology development but SLS and Orion are budgetary albatrosses sucking up funds. Could we get there faster with commercial crew and existing near term heavy lift, maybe and probably cheaper. Could SpaceX go to Mars without NASA, I am not sure he can make the economic case close by going alone. The price tag for Mars is huge so it will take a concerted and international team but the problem is the ever changing politics (president come and go ever 8 years or so) why do you think Kennedy said boots on Moon by the end of the decade cause in theory barring his assignation he would leave office jan 1969 so is a new president really going to cancel going to moo if we were months away... more »

Now you are talking 20 years or more to Mars that is a lot of political turnover and consistent funding/plan isn't something we get theses days long term.___

From gunslingers to samurai to Jedi and clones it is a tale as old as time itself. Are westerns making a comeback?

The digital conversion of art
This is pretty cool to see your real time lines being converted from ink to digital.
+Christopher Butler and +Aaron Wood have you seen this? Would you use it?

I made a video to show how the new Moleskine Digital Writing set works - it's the pen, sketchbook + app together, and it's freaking awesome. I kinda love that my sketchbook sends emails, lol.

Ready for next Months expansion
In late May, BEAM will be filled with air and expanded to its full size. Astronauts will enter BEAM on an occasional basis to conduct tests to validate the module’s overall performance and the capability of expandable habitats.

Our Image Science & Analysis Laboratory (ISAL) team generated a video image overlay so that flight controllers in Johnson Space Center's Mission Control Center can monitor the inflation of the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) on the video view from the Space Station's robotic arm.  The ISAL uses a wide array of imagery analysis skills to analyze hardware installations, among other things.  See http://imagescience.jsc.nasa.gov for more info. ___Ready for next Months expansion

I was never really into the show( sort of too old for it when it came out) is this what you want Rita Repulsa to look like for the upcoming live action movie?

Two interesting and somewhat expensive accessories for your phone from the latest +Shark Tank**
First is Pop slate ( http://popslate.com/ ) a eink style screen for the back of your phone. Pictures, notifications, Calendar and more can be displayed. Though do you need this or is Google Now on your wrist a better method. Plus tool die costs make it prohibitive to chase every phone so it currently only supports iPhone 6/6S.

Second tech item is Frends ( http://www.wearefrends.com/ ) high end stylish headphones for the ladies with changeable caps so you can swap out to match the season or fashion sense.

Would you buy either? The sharks did not invest in either company.

So Kal-El is being split apart for a more global super-men team of heroes
Granted I haven't read superman since he split into red and electric blue superman decades ago. I guess regional super-men will make the comics appeal to a broader audience. Does China have a big comic book collecting community?

Y Marks the Spot
A sinuous feature snakes northward from Enceladus' south pole like a giant tentacle. This feature, which stretches from the terminator near center, toward upper left, is actually tectonic in nature, created by stresses in Enceladus' icy shell.

Geologists call features like these on Enceladus (313 miles or 504 kilometers across) "Y-shaped discontinuities." These are thought to arise when surface material attempts to push northward, compressing or displacing existing ice along the way. Such features are also believed to be relatively young based on their lack of impact craters -- a reminder of how surprisingly geologically active Enceladus is.

now if only they would support googlecast I might use it
Cause the few times I used the smarttv app on my Vizio it sucks. Plus Man in High Castle was underwhelming.

Now, customers can subscribe to Amazon Prime for $10.99 a month or just Prime Video for $8.99 a month.

The monthly Amazon Prime subscription comes with all the perks that annual Prime members also receive, including free shipping, access to music via Prime Music and TV and movies via Prime Video. The Prime Video option, however, offers Amazon's library of original and licensed video without the free shipping or music streaming perks.
