Scientists have made a long-awaited breakthrough in human cloning, by using human skin cells to create early-stage embryos.
In what is being described as a "significant milestone" for medicine, the team from Oregon Health and Science University successfully used a technique which utilised a human skin cell and a woman's egg to produce an embryo which was a genetic copy of the original skin cell.
The resulting embryos were then used as a source of stem cells, which can be used to create specialised tissue cells for transplant operations.

The state of California tracks how many inmates move from local jails to state hospitals each year, a possible measure of which jails are doing a poorer job of treating their mentally ill. But a county-by-county comparison of these transfers is complicated by variables difficult to tease out. These variables include county size, jail population and the different reasons why mentally ill inmates seek such transfers.
Even so, when compared to counties of similar population size, Fresno County ranks near the top in the number of inmates it transfers to state hospitals. Over the past five years, state figures show, Fresno County has sent 386 inmates to Atascadero, Metro and Patton state hospitals. Of similar-sized counties, only Kern County, known for its hard-time jails, has seen more transfers during that period—492. Prop C: Battling Big Money in Politics
On May 21st, more than three years after Citizens United, Los Angeles voters will have an opportunity to speak out against the decision and ask their leaders to do something about it. That opportunity is Proposition C.
Proposition C is two parts question, one part instruction. The text reads,
“Shall the Voters adopt a resolution that there should be limits on political campaign spending and that corporations should not have the constitutional rights of human beings and instruct Los Angeles elected officials and area legislative representatives to promote that policy through amendments to the United States Constitution?”

California will confiscate roughly 40,000 guns from 20,000 Californians deemed too dangerous to own one. Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 140, which authorizes the Department of Justice to use gun purchase fees to eliminate the backlog in the Armed Prohibited Persons System.(1) That's the database of Californians who committed a certain crime or were diagnosed with severe mental illness after purchasing a gun legally.
