Moonstone Beach Sunset Tree (California)

Check how photo looked straight from the camera, how it was taken and processed
---->http://www.phototraces.com/deconstructing-photo/moonstone-beach-sunset-tree-california/

If you follow my blog regularly, you probably read my tutorial Lightroom Organization in 3 Simple Steps and you know when I start editing new photo in Lightroom I move it from CANDIDATES collection to IN PROGRESS collection and it stays there until I am happy with the final result and it is ready to be saved as the final JPEG and published.

Sometimes photo stays in IN PROGRESS collection only for minutes but sometimes for months or even years. When I am not able to achieve the desired result fast I tend to jump to another image giving up on unfinished one for a while.

Today’s featured photo stayed in IN PROGRESS collection for more than two years and I tried to complete it on more than a few occasions without much success. But, when I saw it yesterday, I recognized right away that this photo would illustrate the best the power of HDR processing technology and it took me only minutes to process it and publish to my blog.

SHOOTING AND PROCESSING

Before taking the featured photo, I was well aware of the extreme dynamic range of the light in the scene. It was at the sunset and the sun was still above the horizon making the sky extremely bright. At the same time, the forest behind the tree was pretty much in complete darkness.

I took 7 bracketed shots on a tripod using the shortest possible focal length of 10mm with the oddly shaped tree in the foreground as the main attraction of the composition.

Even though the light was extremely dynamic, I did not need all 7 bracketed images for HDR processing, 6 was enough.

I used the HDR Pro module of Photoshop to merge 6 bracketed shots to HDR and, when I had newly merged image back in Lightroom, I applied Gentle Wave preset from my Free Preset Collection and I was done. ___Ganda ng treatment

Houston, we have a problem.

Housing lens cover got corroded during exposure to sea spray and sunlight while I was shooting the kiteboarding festival at Emerald Beach.

This is a bummer, coming from a company that supposedly produces photography equipment intended for extreme element exposure when outdoors. Bought it only last December.

Today in History: World’s First Scheduled Airline Began Operations, 1914
On January 1, 1914 — 101 years ago today — the world’s first scheduled heavier-than-air airline began operations. The airline was the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, organized by Percival E. Fansler, and the fleet of planes consisted of 2 Benoist XIV conventional biplanes (two parallel wings), called “flying boats.” Total number of passengers per flight was one, and the single passenger sat next to the pilot in an open cockpit. The first scheduled flight between the yacht basin in St. Petersburg and the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa departed just before 10:00 AM and was piloted by Tony Jannus, an early pioneer and daredevil in aviation history. The flight covered 18 miles (29 kilometers) and took under half an hour — about 11 hours less than the best alternative travel service by rail.

The flight covered 18 miles (29 kilometers) and took under half an hour — about 11 hours less than the best alternative travel service by rail.

The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line was founded by Percival Fansler and Thomas Wesley Benoit (the designer of the biplane used for service). Their company negotiated a contract with the St. Petersburg Board of Trade, which agreed to subsidize 50% of the costs for starting the airline, to provide 2 daily flights per day. When the contract expired on March 31, 1914, the company had transported 1,204 passengers without injury and lost only 4 days to mechanical problems. A decline in business and lack of continued funding from the Board of Trade caused the end of the service.

We, fiction writers (and poets, to a lesser extent) do this all the time. So, don't dare mess with us. You could end up being caricatured or renamed as the most atrocious villain in a novel. And the worst thing is it will only be you who will notice that you have been fictionalized. So, it doesn't make a good proposition for a libel case.

hehe.
