Title: Silence and Light VII
A little haiku for you ...
Light lingers, stillness.
Watered time condensed again,
Silence sliced thinly.

Pictureline very kindly took the time to interview me. I, once again, go on and on and on and on and on ... yup ... I do. I even say some things I have not said before.

The latest spotlight over at my eZine is on German, fine art photographer Bernd Walz. Bernd does wonderfully original work. Check out the images from his "Crystalline World" series, which are microphotos of crystalline structures formed when dilute solutions of common laboratory chemicals dry down. I always enjoy seeing what scientists choose to express artistically ...

self & other
I would just like to say that I flagrantly plagiarized myself to make this image, and I had the audacity to not even ask myself permission if it was okay.

There is, of course, no such thing as a School of Long Exposurists, but I am going to pretend that I am an art critic and coin the term myself. As I see it, there are three distinct periods so far (a) an older period which consists of photographers such as Kenna, Levin, Burdeney, Fokos, etc, (b) a middle period which includes photographers like +Joel Tjintjelaar , +Steve-Maxx landeros +Jeff Gaydash +Xavier Rey +Julia Anna Gospodarou Kevin Saint Grey +Moises Levy +Andy Brown and many others (too many to mention here), and (c) the newer period which includes, among many others, great photographers like +Grant Murray +Quincy Jefferson +Sandra Canning +Stefanie Loges and +Michael Salmela .
Michael is the focus of my latest artist spotlight over at my slices of silence eZine. I was really pleased with his very thoughtful answers to the questions-- and his photography speaks for itse... more »

Title: Silence and Light III
Last year I shifted to much higher key tones for my seascapes than I had been previously working on, but my roots are in the low key, moodier, dark tones. I am returning to them for a while ... they feel like old friends, like a comforting blanket to wrap around my head ...
... yup.

Looks like a dog spitting ... don't ya think?
I came across a blog today that was showcasing some of my photos. They titled the post, Cute Nathan Wirth Photography. Hmmm ... does that mean that I am cute? Or does it mean that my photography is cute? Or, maybe, that both my photography and me are cute? Ahhhh ... the true mysteries of life ...
Any Bay Area photographers want to guess where I took this image?

On October 6th, 2010, Juno award winning, Canadian Jazz greats David Braid (piano) and Phil Nimmons (clarinet) improvised some wonderful, spontaneously-realized jazz compositions in front of an audience at Petro-Canada Hall in Newfoundland, Canada. David asked me to provide some images for the CD booklet, seven of which appear at the beginning of this video. The rest of the images also fit the overall theme of the sea that resonates throughout this wonderful recording of that evening's music.
David and Phil will be releasing the CD to the public soon (and it includes a small book of my eight images-- all printed on high quality paper); meanwhile, you can view some of my long exposure seascapes (quite a few that I have kept on my hard drive until now) while you listen to this wonderful, improvised interview between David's piano and Phil's clarinet.

Title: self & mandolin
So ... every once in a while I pull out my Gibson mandolin, which, rather remarkably, was made in 1916, and I diddle a tune or two. I should, however, confess that I am an undisciplined, unpracticed and messy picker. And before you go and say that I am just being humble, let me just say that I am most definitely an unimpressive musician. I am ... I just am. I am willing to admit that from time to time I can take a picture or two worth looking at, and, as a writer, I can turn a phrase or two when necessary, but the musical genes were not infused into my personage ... that said, I was playing this tune when I took this shot ...
