Swarm! The Science of Collective Behavior
A Google Science Fair 2013 Hangout On Air with National Geographic Explorer Iain Couzin
Why do different kinds of fish, birds, animals and insects act as one? What scientific principles guide their collective behavior? By understanding how and why creatures move together in synchronized ways, what can we learn about nature – and about ourselves?
Come to this "Field Trip Friday" Hangout On AIr with Iain Couzin, a National Geographic Explorer, and a leading expert on collective animal behavior. We’ll visit the CouzinLab at Princeton University to learn about different behaviors of different kinds of creatures, and hear Iain’s insights into the science of swarms.

Everything is better when it's about #ants. Today I've had two papers published in PLoS Computational Biology.
In the first one, we used robots programmed to behave like ants to test some hypotheses about the behavior of ants when navigating complex networks of galleries. You can find the paper here: http://www.ploscompbiol.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1002903
In the second paper, we present the results of a very comprehensive study on the building of bridges by the army ant Eciton burchellii. To facilitate the movement of sometimes hundred of thousands of individuals on uneven and unpredictable terrains, part of the ant workers link together their legs and bodies to form temporary bridges over gaps along the trails. And these living structures are fantastic: they are build in less than 20 seconds and they can last for hours until there is no more traffic on the t... more »

On the Importance of Basic Research
+Carl Zimmer argues for the importance of basic research:
"...if you want to bring back these birds with captive breeding, the birds have to breed. And if you don’t understand the equipment they use for breeding, then you’re doomed. Sniggering about duck penises won’t change that." And, after all, duck penises are an expression of sexual competition, a force which has shaped our own basic social structures, physiology, and can even be implicated in pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia. Plus, duck genitals are pretty cool in and of themselves.
