beacon | pigeon point, ca
I've shot the Pigeon Point lighthouse before, but never from the dunes to the south. I would have loved to get down to the beach, but it didn't look possible. Actually it did, but it didn't look advisable. Anyway, this is from an outing last Tuesday evening. I was able to get off work, get home to feed the dog AND make it to the coast with time to set up for shooting. Woo-hoo...gotta love late sunset season!

Don't you half expect the next photo I post to be of a baby dinosaurs hatching from these orbs? Heh
+Greg Benz and I shot here at both sunset and sunrise, and in both cases we had to shoot in turns with other photographers. The beach is pretty shallow and the boulders are all pretty close together, so there's a bit of cooperation/jockeying for position that has to go on to get a people-free shot of the composition you're going for. Fortunately everyone was pretty well-behaved. Bonus: at our sunrise shoot, we were pleasantly surprised to run into fellow #queenstownadventure participant +Dave Ball --- that was fun.

Last Saturday a group of Sydney and local photographers, +Ana Andres +Ali Sadreddini +Jason Ruth +Jason Baker +Keith McInnes Sharon McInnes +Michael Blyde +Rodney Campbell +Grant Galbraith Belinda Campbell +Dianne Hall and myself went to Forresters Beach on the Central Coast of NSW for a sunset shoot and a Light Painting session.
Forresters Beach has a lot of interesting rock formations and I was like a kid in a lolly shop with too many image compositions to choose from. I was in heaven with wet feet and often wet from the waist down getting in nice and close to the action as always. :)))

Haven’t posted in a while. My apologies for that! I’ve been crazy busy with travelling and all sorts of other (good) things. I am back at it though, and hope to be posting a bit more regularly again in the coming months!
This image is the last one in a series of images that I captured during a long exposure sunset shoot at Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) near the Swiss town of Morges. I shot this with my Nikon D800E and made a conscious choice to turn of long exposure noise reduction on my camera. The good part of a sunset doesn’t last that long, so turning it off allowed me to get away with more images. Never again though! The D800E adds thousands of tiny white spots to each image when that setting is turned off. I was aware of that and it can be taken care off in a post … but wow … what a time-consu... more »

I gave up my waders to a client and went in the water in bare feet for this one. It was freezing cold and my feet were like ice blocks after about 20 minutes in the water, but when the light broke free of a cloud and illuminated the spring foliage it was totally worth it!

I was fortunate to spend 2 wonderful weeks in the Kruger National Park recently and although the grass is high and the bushes are dense at this time of the year, wonderful sightings are still possible with a little patience and endurance. I met these two white rhinos on the dirt road one early morning, the first rays of sun started to penetrate the still lingering mist. At the ever increasing rate of rhino-poaching for their horns, these impressive animals are unfortunately walking towards an uncertain future - even possible extinction - of the species. For

Remember When the Days Were Long

As the sun nears the horizon towards the west, the contrast between light and shadow in the rolling hills of the Palouse is a photographers dream. With so many possibilities for amazing photographs, the sun will probably set before you can shoot them all. That's why you get up the next morning and do it all over again at sunrise.

Where They've Saved a Place For Innocence
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, California, USA
I made a spur of the moment decision to go to Rodeo Beach last night and this is the result. 289 Seconds of the Pacific Ocean slamming against the sea stacks as the sun melted into the sea.
Even at 289 seconds, the water wasn't as smooth as I wanted, so I enlisted the Tonal Contrast filter in Nik Color Efex Pro to help out. By sliding all three sliders to the left in varying amounts, it reduced the texture and gave the water a smoother appearance. Give it a try the next time you want less texture or detail in one of your photographs.

The Falling Light
Silver Falls State Park, Oregon, USA
My day at Silver Falls started with perfect weather - overcast with just an occasional light drizzle. By the time I headed down the trail to Lower South Falls, some breaks in the clouds were letting some sunlight through, so I had to wait for the clouds to block the sun from the water as I was shooting.
I (very) briefly considered converting this to black & white, but I couldn't bring myself to removing the color from this one. The color plays a big part in the mood I wanted in this image.

Shine
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, California, USA
Every sunrise at the Golden Gate is an opportunity to find a new way to photograph a familiar subject. The changes in weather bring the possibility of getting a spectacular sunrise such as the one last month that led to this image.
There are also mornings like today when the fog cleared momentarily, long enough to allow a few shots before the rain got heavier and the bridge became cloaked once again. I may have something to share from that brief shoot later this week. Until then, I hope you enjoy this one and have a great week!

Sunrise at Moraine Lake 2
Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
Moraine Lake is one of the worlds iconic landscape photography destinations and I was fortunate to experience a spectacular sunrise while I was there. In addition to the classic horizontal view of the lake and the peaks shot from the top of the rock pile, I did some vertical compositions as well.
One thing I noticed repeatedly when processing photos taken at several lakes in the Rockies is the shift in color of the water when converting the image to sRGB before uploading. The colors are fine in ProPhotoRGB and AdobeRGB, but the deep blues and greens of many of the lakes appear to be out of the sRGB gamut. Has anyone else noticed this?
