last week at the GrimselPass in Switzerland, a great shear zone in gneiss of the Aar Massif ... we found in some deformed quartz vein like this one. We can see a rotation of a quartz and the 2 shadows of pressure.

Which is the sense ? counterclockwise for the rotation of the quartz ... and senestrial for the strike-slip.

Last week, during a geologic field trip acrosse the Alps ... the Ober Gabelhotn, one of the awesome 4'000m of the Imperial Crown. This is the name of the 41 summits (33 more of 4'000m) surrounding Zermatt in Switzerland ...

An another picture from my holydays ... an absurd idea from my beach towel. The idea is always to do a long exposure of a beach during peak traffic. The flint pebbles are perfect for this kind of situation!

Back from hollydays ... 10 days in the north of France, to spend time with friends and family. No desire to wake up early to catch sunrise and short drink in late afternoon really to strong to shoot the sunset ...

So ... take pictures in the middle of afternoon, under a great sun, between naps on the beach and swimming in the Channel ... why not ?? ... a big ND stop filter, 30 seconds of exposure and severals peoples on the beach ... it needs no more to take pleasure :)

I take this picture at Mers-Les-Bains ... with the lighthouse of Le Tréport, in extrem north of Normandy.

John Day Fossils Beds National Monument ... and the famous Painted Hills. This backwater in the desert of Oregon wins ... it is out of any main road, outside the tourist areas, 200km far from the famous places of Oregon (like Crater Lake, Columbian River Gorge or Newberry Volcanic NM). Coming from the north like us, it's simple, it takes at least half day's drive in the desert where we cross only small villages of 50 souls lost in the dry heaths. And when we realize that the gas gauge is at the end, tighten your buttocks, you do not play too much of the accelerator to make sure you reach the next pump + 50 km away. No way to break down here at 40 ° C, where it spent only two cars by hour! Anyway, a scenery worthy of the best westerns or the most glaucous movies ... this kind of place always reminds me a Stephen King book's where a psychopathic cop benefits breakdowns to help tourists and... more »

Definitely, i love Oregon !! .... I have not traveled throughout the U.S., the Great Plains do not interest me ... but after two trips to the west to go most states mountainous between Denver and the Pacific coast, I came to the conclusion that Oregon was my favorite. On the scale of the U.S. this may be the statement that presents the greatest diversity of landscapes ... green coast with awesome Rain Forests, in extremely dry desert of eastern state ... agricultural plains and vineyards from Portland to Eugene, high snow-capped volcanoes of the Cascade Mountains ... in 200km, we can travel from one to another ... super moist ocean climate to the semi-desert or mountain ...

In short, I think I fell in love with this state! ... In addition Portland is the greenest city in the U.S. and underground. Everything I like! pity we could not stop there.

More and more, there is for me the issue of black and white ... every time i postprocess an image, there is a small voice behind me says "hey! it could be pretty b & w finally!" ... when the light is there, the landscape is definitely "color", this issue disappears naturally. But with environments like this, a photo taken in mid-afternoon, with a thick haze which reduces visibility, treatment options are minimal in color and the image will look anyway ... bland. This is where the b & w occurs efficiently. I find it less sensitive to lack of light and can easily go far in the processing without it harms the image. If the grain appears, this gives a outdated side ... after all a Kodak TMAX 400 had grain! It becomes easier to develop a picture with an ordinary light ... with b & w. cheating would you tell me? ... can be ... but finally, the photographer can it not master those... more »

It seems that i never post this picture on G+ yet. A 4 old picture taken in the early morning in august 2008 ... the "Lac de Peyre" in french Alps and the "Pointe du Midi" under the first pink color of the day .... a 15s long exposure and ND grad filter to not overexposed the moon too much.

Cascade Head, Oregon ... a little moutain between Lincoln City and Pacific City. Perhaps one of my favourite point of view to the Pacific i found between LA and Seattle ... not in a National Park or a State Park, a free place without anybody ... just rain forest and grassland and a little trail not much marked ...

I love this kind of place, where autorities have not fully regulated, where we can go freely, in the wild ... like i can found here in the Alps. I decide to go "there", and i go ... to discover an awesome point of view, to do something different from the main touristic stream, to see something that mass tourism does not even suspect ....

Winter is ending in the Alps ... after a April really wintry with lot of snow in mountains, sometimes more than 1 meter in center of France to only 1000m high, spring is back and warm starts to come.

But i'm sure you have still many pictures of winter in your hard drive !

New Circle Announcement: European Top Photography

I am in the works of putting together a circle for great talent from all over Europe. It doesn't matter if you're into nature, portrait, street, or any other type of photography, as long as your feed contains good quality original work. There is no follower limit so everybody is welcome to ask for inclusion as long as your own images dominate your feed.

If YOU are an European photographer and want to be a part of the new circle, let me know in the comments. I ask you kindly to reshare this post so that I can promote as many talented photographers as possible when it'll be time to share this circle with the rest of the world.

Point Reyes - California ... an historical place in California. Only few pioneers from 19e century and a lighthouse, where we only ears the sound because of a strong fog. this place is swept by the winds, spray, storms in the Pacific ... windiest corner of the USA, the trees bend under the force of the westerly winds. Here nature suffers more than it flourishes. A few km further east, the weather is calm, semi-desert, under a blue sky unchanging ... U.S. contrast in all its splendor.

The extreme cold weather which occured in Europe has provided some awesome and unusual landscapes ... here is the Geneva Lake, after a storm of "bise", a northward wind who can reach more than 100km/h around this lake. Big waves break against the harbours and pray turns to ice on the pier, the rocks, the boats ... so rare, so beautiful ... Between Baltic sea and Baikal lake : the Geneva Lake ...
