NuSTAR is keeping busy

NuSTAR has been busy studying the most energetic phenomena in the universe. Recently, a few high-energy events have sprung up, akin to "things that go bump in the night." When one telescope catches a sudden outpouring of high-energy light in the sky, NuSTAR and a host of other telescopes stop what they were doing and take a better look.

 For example, in early April, the blazar Markarian 421 had an episode of extreme activity, brightening by more than 50 times its typical level. Blazars are a special class of galaxies with accreting, or "feeding," supermassive black holes at their centers. As the black holes feed, they light up, often ejecting jets of material. When the jets are pointing toward Earth, they are called blazars. By using telescopes sensitive to a range of energies to study how blazars vary, astrophysicists gain insight... more »

I know I am in the minority in wanting more from the Prometheus universe

but glad just after the year anniversary things seem to be moving forward with a sequel. spoilers in the article for those who haven't seen Prometheus yet. Never heard of Transcendence so really can't say it Paglen is a good choice or not.

8 new astronauts selected by NASA
Given only 4 slots for NASA a year to the ISS one has to wonder when these 8 candidates will fly. First crewed test flight for Orion isnt until 2021 so that is a long way off and not really going to offer many slots either given lack of concrete missions.

All day class on an oil rig
One the areas NASA has found good synergy with is the energy sector since we both work in harsh environment, remote operations, extreme conditions and pumps and pipes. So today we are taking a class at the oil rig museum in Galveston to better understand the industry and identify where we can leverage our expertise, toolset and perspective to work on technology development #forthebenefitofall

Portland Concrete only lasts 50 years and releases more carbon where as Roman concrete has lasted for ~2000 years. It will be interesting to see which applications will use Roman concrete in the future.

my father in law bought a trailer is trying to figure out how to get tv in the trailer for when they go on trips. At first I was thinking of just getting an extra sat box add it to my account, but then I realized I needed to fill out a waiver for him to get NY/LA feeds of Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC since once he left Houston area he would be SOL for locals. The other option is this GenieGo box which would download shows from my whole house DVR to the box to then transfer to his laptop or iPads for on the go.

 Directv Box - all the channels all the time while on travel, but monthly cost for the additional box plus satellite dish on tripod ($150). I have a few old SD boxes so I should be able to just add it to the account maybe.

(Sat03) ESA's Cargo ship docks with the Space Station

ESA’s fourth Automated Transfer Vehicle, Albert Einstein, completed a flawless rendezvous with the International Space Station on 15 June when it docked smoothly with orbital outpost at 14:07 GMT (16:07 CEST).

The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is now connected to the Space Station.

“Bravo Europe, bravo ESA, bravo ATV. Thank you Member States, thank you industry, thank you CNES, thank you Russian partner,” commented Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of ESA.

“With the fourth ATV now ready to support and supply the Space Station with essential supplies and scientific experiments, ESA again proves itself to be a reliable partner in the international station upon which the future can be developed.”

Pumps & Pipes will be holding a Mid-Year Conference hosted by the Johnson Space Center on Monday, July 29th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The event will be held at the JSC Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) and will have a Uniquely Houston theme.  Conference presentations will focus on ‘the other guys toolkit’ with imaging, trajectory control, docking, simulation, and design in virtual space for energy, medicine and aerospace applications.  Once again, Pumps & Pipes will voyage from inner space to outer space with stops in between.

Nearly 900 extrasolar planets have been confirmed to date, but now for the first time astronomers think they are seeing compelling evidence for a planet under construction in an unlikely place, at a great distance from its diminutive red dwarf star.

The keen vision of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has detected a mysterious gap in a vast protoplanetary disk of gas and dust swirling around the nearby star TW Hydrae, located 176 light-years away in the constellation Hydra (the Sea Serpent). The gap's presence is best explained as due to the effects of a growing, unseen planet that is gravitationally sweeping up material and carving out a lane in the disk, like a snow plow.

I guess I assumed Guardians would be part of Avengers 2 given they are part of Phase 2. then again I know nothing about the Guardians so maybe they are across the galaxy from Earth so there isn't a chance for helping fight Thanos on Earth. But if they aren't part of Avengers 2 then how do they fit into the bigger phase 2 or is it something in phase 3 and just some origin for them and sidequest for mcguffin that dovetails into Avengers 2.

M31: Black Hole Bonanza Turns up in Galaxy Next Door

Twenty-six black hole candidates – the largest number found in a galaxy outside our own – have been discovered in the Milky Way's galactic neighbor, Andromeda. Using over 150 Chandra observations spread over 13 years, researchers identified the bonanza of stellar-mass black holes, that is, those that form from the collapse of a giant star and typically have masses between five and ten times that of the Sun. This composite graphic shows the Chandra view of the central region of Andromeda, also known as M31, as inset (purple) in context with an optical image (red, green, and blue) of this spiral galaxy. It is expected that billions of years in the future, the Milky Way and Andromeda will collide and many more black holes will be created.
