Google Local San Francisco832,179*RSVP Here* — http://goo.gl/6Uh6A Got a flair for design? Learn to build your own private terrarium world at our DIY Terrarium Workshop & Cocktail Party.  Don’t worry if you’ve never designed your own terrarium. The fantastic designers behind *MakersKit* (http://makerskit.com/) will be on hand to offer personal instruction and advice. You’ll also have everything you need to make your own glass terrarium to take home with you: charcoal, pea pebbles, soil, moss and an abundance of succulents and indoor plants from which to choose. Personalize your eco-creation with a found object, rock or figurine — we’ll have a few to pick from or bring a favorite from home. After we’ve created our tiny living worlds, we’ll sip on layered ‘terrarium cocktails’ hand-crafted by local bartenders and nibble on gourmet treats. We’ll also engage in a little show-and-tell; the designer of the most creative, original and novel terrarium will be rewarded with something extra special to help further their creative spirit. *Be sure to RSVP for you and up to 1 guest. We’ll send you a confirmation invite as soon as we’ve read your fantastic new reviews*. — http://goo.gl/6Uh6A Remember that Power User events are ONLY for our most active Google+ Local users (those who have written a large number of quality reviews and continue to write new, quality reviews each month), and their guests, so start reviewing places you’ve visited.Power Users + Friends: DIY Terrarium Workshop & Cocktail Party2013-07-11 18:30:0061

"What sets the Apple Watch Edition apart from your average Rolex is the everyone knows exactly how much it costs. People will be like, "Ho. Ly. Shit. Doesn't that thing cost like $10,000?" Then people will know you have that much money."

I honestly, sincerely, 100% believe that this is the worst thing Apple has made within the last decade. Apple has always been uncomfortable close to having their products be status symbols over functional technology. With the Apple Watch Edition, Apple is basically saying, "Fuck you. You'll buy it because you care about asserting your status. We're motherfucking Apple." And THAT is what bothers me the most about this watch and the people who buy it. San Francisco tech culture already has a serious perception issue with copious consumption and Apple isn't doing its community any favors.

Welp, after 11 years, my 52' Sony Bravia died. After months of flickering and negative images, it was time to replace it. Thanks TV. You were a good companion (and you somehow survived a cross-country trip in U-Haul).

After much debate, internal strife, researching, and acknowledgment of brand bias, I went out and acquired a 4k 65' Sony Bravia (X850B to be exact). After some fiddling, messing around, and finagling, my first impression is that I'm impressed. While I wish I could have waited until later this year or two for an OLED TV, this definitely feels like a future-proof, solid option. Because I love reviewing tech, I'll be sure to let you know what I think about it after some more time with it.

I can say, however, that I spent about 2hrs watching 4k nature.... moving images? I regret nothing. My favorite was desert.

I'm still obsessed with money-saving plan Digit
Check it out here: https://digit.co/r/ipK-i

Since writing about Digit a few weeks ago, I've only grown more enamored with it. My friends and I have started making saving a competition, I think about saving all the time, and I occasionally get GIF's sent to me by a robot. When I imagined the future, I never imagined one where I'd enjoy saving money. Oops.

For those of you who don't know, Digit isn't an app. It's a service that communicates with you through text messages only. Every morning I wake up a text that says, "Your balance is $X. Yesterday it was $X." I can text back to see what transactions I made or, if I got a direct deposit, I'll wake up to that good news instead. If I want to save money, I just text Digit an amount. Withdrawing works the same way.

Digit is like a poor friend I send money to on occasion.

So how does it all work? Digit will sync to your bank using your bank's API (for BoA all I had to do was sign in) and the money you save is held in a Digit account (like Venmo before cash out) that's FDIC insured. It's a super simple, painless setup process and the webpage you use to check transactions and savings is super simple as well.

This is your, "Man, I'd do that if I had some extra cash," fund.

The question I get most often about Digit is whether or not your saved money earns interest. It doesn't - but that's not what Digit is supposed to be used for. I plan to spend my Digit money within a few months of accumulating it. I've got my savings account for longterm savings and I feel terrible about taking money out of it. Digit, on the other hand, is for saving up for trips, a gadget, or something else special.

Saving is fun. And it shouldn't be.

At the end of day, I've never spent so much time thinking about saving money than I have after using Digit. That sounds stressful, but it isn't. Digit makes it fun. There's little to no pressure to save when you can't and the occasional celebratory GIF's don't hurt either. I know I've recommended Digit before, but it's because it's actually, 100% the coolest thing I've used in 2015.

I'm in love with a computer who texts me to take my money.
You can also fall in love here: https://digit.co/r/ipK-i

I seriously suggest giving it a try. Honest. From the bottom of my heart, especially if you find yourself in the, "Man, if only I had a few hundred bucks for that...." camp like I do.

A tale of two brands and the changing of the guard

Technology is important to me. We rely on it every day and depend on manufacturers seeking profit to innovate for us. That's kind of scary, but it usually works out. We're not always sure what we want, but we know that we want to record our memories, interact with others, and be more efficient both individually and collectively. There is perhaps no more important piece of technology in someone's hands than their smartphone. It's a tiny little computer, more powerful than the massive towers of 15years ago under you desk, that we touch hours of every day and that we depend on for all the essentials. Technology is important to me. We rely on it every day and depend on manufacturers seeking profit to innovate for us. That's kind of scary, but it usually works out. There is perhaps no more important piece of technology in someone's hands than their smartphone. It's a tiny little computer, more powerful than the massive towers of 15years ago under you desk, that we touch hours of every day and that we depend on for all the essentials. Like it or not, the technology inside of your device matters. It affects you every single day.

Every year, at the Mobile World Congress, the manufacturers of these devices unveil their newest creations to improve our lives. They ride a fine line of meeting existing expectations and delivering the unexpected. Speaking strictly about smartphones and not VR or wearables, this year was surprising for two reasons: HTC worried itself too much with meeting expectations while Samsung delivered something wholly original and unexpected.

Let's start with HTC... If you thought my introduction was hyperbolic, you should have watched their announcement. Not only did it begin with a narration from Robert Downey Jr. about how "we are all one" and "quiet, yet brilliant," but every introduction was accompanied by a flashier and flashier video. The amount of muscle flexing in the video was a stark contrast to the awkardness unfolding from the presenters on stage, but one thing was clear - HTC was presenting itself as the best designers in the game. The HTC One M9 was coming and it was getting lots of hype.

I can't go much further into this description without setting the stage though. Long story short: The HTC One M8 is simply one of the best designed phones ever with its all metal body, crisp screen, and insanely loud Boomsound, front-facing speakers, despite its lackluster 4MP rear camera.  With HTC struggling for cash, everyone expected that something stunning would be shown given the momentum of the M8. Some early leaks confirmed a beautiful new device, but later leaks showed the M9 disappointingly looking a little too similar to the M8.

Still with me? While it isn't fair to hold HTC to expectations of leaked renders, it IS fair to hold them the standard of pushing devices forward with each release. They owe their customers something to dramatically improve their lives. Say what you will about Apple's iterative process, but each phone brings a major new feature with it. What did HTC bring with it at the Mobile World Congress?

The M8 with a more megapixel-dense camera (without optical image stabilization). Full stop.

As the owner of the HTC One M8, I was ready to throw my money at HTC, but, unfortunately, a phone so similar just doesn't cut it - and not just with me, but with the mobile landscape as well. The screen is the same, it has a faster processor, a better front-facing camera, and the power button was moved to more convenient spot. All that would be fine if HTC did something to meet the claims it made during its introductory videos or if there was even some standout new feature. Alas, HTC instead decided to rest on its laurels from M8 and M7 (the device released two years which looks very similar to the M8). That's three years of the same design with an "improved" camera that's getting less than lukewarm reviews. It's so similar that The Verge even poked fun at it by introducing the M8 for its M9 video only to say, "Oops, no THIS is the M9."

If you really want to get nasty, the M9 looks like the M8 in a dummy case thanks to its very awkward no-longer-flush-on-the-sides design.

One hour later, it was Samsung's turn to announce the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge... Samsung has been on the chopping block for a while now about releasing plastic, non-premium feeling phones that only see minor or gimmicky improvements year after year. With poor sales of the S5 hanging over its head, Samsung shouldn't have had much confidence - but they showed that they were willing listen while also creating a new design identity.

Samsung phones are adored by Android-fanatics for their removable batteries and Micro-SD card slots. Not too sure what that means? Don't worry, most people don't. Samsung took a risk this year by removing both of those features from their two flagships. While HTC chose a, "You told us you like this.... so here it is again!" approach, Samsung was ballsy enough to remove things some fans loved to improve the device for many more people - and it was the right call. (FYI - Galaxy phones had a plastic back so it could be easily removed to switch out the battery.)

While the regular Galaxy S6 is interesting, the Galaxy S6 Edge was the show stealer.

Both devices rock metal sides with a glass back, but the Edge's screen slopes over the sides of the device for a curved screen. It's completely bizarre, weird, and brilliant. It solves the issue of ugly side bezels and utilizes that slope in interesting ways - like having it flash different colors when face down to show you which of your favorite contacts is calling. Gimmicky? Maybe it is, but it's new. And it doesn't stand alone.

Say hello to a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization, real-time HDR, a 577 PPI screen (almost twice that of the iPhone 6 that can be used for VR), a fingerprint reader, and some nice touches with the front camera - like being able to take a selfie by tapping the heartbeat reader on the back of the phone. All that is addition to its new premium design and toned back custom version of Android, Touchwiz.

It was a surprise to almost everyone. More than that, it was as stark a contrast as it could be to HTC's minimal evolution from last year.

As an owner of HTC and Samsung phones, I have to say that I'm completely surprised to be going back to Samsung this year. I love my HTC One M8 and the HTC One M9 is still beautiful, but Samsung was looking forward and trying new things, unafraid at ruffling feathers from their most avid fans in the name of better design. Whereas HTC only had to truly fix one or two things to wow, it appears to have missed the boat by using a three year old design as Samsung speeds by with something we never thought we needed. That's the kind of innovation we need to be seeing more of.

Community Manager Appreciation Day, #CMAD , is a strange day for me. Still in its relative infancy, I can't help but shake the thought that CMAD exists to give all of us Community Managers a chance to explain, defend, and broadcast what it is, exactly, we do. If my experience on the east coast taught me anything, this profession is a nuanced, generally poorly understood profession. So, in the spirit of what I think CMAD is, I'd like to write about what it means, to me, to be a Community Manager.

Luckily, I've had a lot of practice explaining what I do - specifically to my parents. Over the years, I've tried all sorts of explanations ranging from "I'm the voice of the customer to the company, and vice versa" to "My job is to retain valuable customers after they're brought into the app" to many other variations.

A cornerstone of all of my explanations is that I'm a marketer and that happy, passionate communities have intrinsic value. This, undoubtedly, leaves people saying, "Wow! That's great!" while at the same time wondering what my day-to-day activities and what kind of company would pay me a living wage. Through all of the confusion about me working in support (a personal pet peeve of mine), I'm generally pleased with how understanding most people are. I guess I have the total weirdness of Silicon Valley to thank for that. "Oh, that's what you do? Well, if we can have a startup that sends your enemies glitter, I guess your job seems pretty reasonable."

Damn straight it's reasonable!

One of the most important lessons I ever learned as a Community Manager is that my job is to support the community that already exists instead of viewing my job as a "Community Builder". No matter where you are, no matter what industry, no matter how small your company, you already have a community if you have customers. My job is the reach out to those people and give them the tools they need to foster their own communities. With Community Management essentially revolving around organic metrics, I don't like to measure my success on the size of my community or on any 'salesman tactics'. If I have to sell someone on being a part of my community, they probably won't stay long or will end up being toxic. I prefer to identify passionate people and reward them with more tools to do what they love doing (like beta programs over free 'swag').

So if my metric for success isn't something like 'Number of Twitter Followers' (Product Marketing does this by the way), what is my metric? It's engagement. It's retention. It's fixed bugs or product influence. Sometimes, it's even stories.

In gaming, if I could boost the number of attacks-per-hour with a development-light feature that also solved a player concern (for instance, having a hard time getting experience points), it would be a success for me and validate my... well... worth. If I can sit in on a product meeting and say, "Ohhhh. No. Don't do that. The community will literally shit themselves" thanks to my understanding of my users and avoid a clusterfuck, I've done my job. If I can motivate the team by sharing an inspiring story about how a user did something great with our app, I feel happy. If more people answer, "From a friend" when answering a survey about why they used the app, I can assume that I've done what I'm supposed because organic growth is super tough to track - so I'm just going to take (at least some) credit. :)

At the end of the day, I've found that people are relieved to know that companies employ someone who is reading tweets and shit to represent their feedback to the company they're interacting with. With more Community Managers, we can show people that their opinions and preferences really do make it back to the people making the decision. I hate the ideas that so many people feel so detached from the brands they love and feel like they're just along for the ride. Now that we have hundreds of apps on our phones, I want to differentiate the ones I work on by connecting my users to both the brand and each other. Happy communities have intrinsic benefits.

If you want to become a community manager, work for a company that believes that. Trust me. It will make your life a whole lot easier.___

This coming week I will start as a Senior Community Manager at PicsArt - a photo editing, drawing tool, and social art community!

It was tough for me to leave the gaming industry. I love games. I admire the craftsmanship. I appreciate the strong gaming community. But, most of all, I've always been fascinated by visual storytelling. After studying film at American University, I decided once and for all that I need to be working in a creative space. I need to be somewhere that gives people tools to express themselves and be inspired by others.

Even though leaving gaming is hard, I realize that working for a creative platform, namely PicsArt, is the right move for me. This realization is strengthened by their mission and drive.

Yesterday, I gave notice at KIXEYE.

Leaving this company is hard for me. KIXEYE is absolutely filled to the brim with incredibly talented, fun, unique, and interesting people that I have loved seeing every day. I am truly entrenched in the culture here and have had a blast whether I'm in a meeting or winning at a KIXBALL game. (Seriously. My meetings were fun.) More importantly, every day was a new professional challenge. KIXEYE has allowed me to grow, learn, and experiment. I've become a better worker by being here and am grateful for every single chance I've had.

I debated with myself about when I would tell my friends about this, but came to the conclusion that I hate secrets and that I didn't want to surprise people on my last day when I'd be emotional. So where am I off to? What am I doing next? I'll leave that for another post, but I'm thrilled.___

The last Christmas before a new tradition.

I get incredibly reflective around the holidays. Always. It was probably my dad's incessant joy for Christmas that eventually rubbed off on me to make me someone who plays Christmas songs before Thanksgiving and who says, "I love you. Seriously." to all of my closest friends. Every year on Christmas morning, my dad will make my mom and I sit at the top of stairs. He'll run down to turn on the Christmas lights and, when I was younger, set up a toy train. He'll then shout from downstairs, "I think Santa came.... Do you want to see?" After a photo at the top of the stairs, my mom and I will venture downstairs to see.

After a photo at the top of the stairs, my mom and I will venture downstairs to see.

This tradition has been carried out in Chesapeake, Virginia for almost as long as I can remember. We've done it over 20 times. This year will be the last year it happens.

In Chesapeake at least.

That's because my parents, ever the cunning planners for the future, have completed a new home. You see, my parents have had quite the journey. Starting their relationship young and poor, my dad took out a loan for a home that my mom thought was too much. He made her cry with the amount they'd have to pay each month. My dad isn't someone who likes to settle. Having grown up in a room with five siblings his entire life, he feels very strongly that a home should have space and, most importantly, a big bedroom for just him and the love of his life. So there they were. Broke, stressed, and working two jobs in Norfolk, Virginia.

As my mom completed school for clinical psychology and my dad came to grips with just getting back from serving as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, they started talking about, well, me. I didn't exist yet, but I was in their plans. If I was going to exist, I was going to need a bedroom. So they moved to a bigger home. As I grew, they moved to an even bigger home. This home is where our top-of-the-stairs Christmas tradition takes place.

Though we haven't moved in over 20 years, my parents seemingly sold and bought houses every few years. We had a home in Washington, DC where my dad spent the work week and we also had a beach house that we rented out all but a few weeks a year. I've always been proud of my parents for what they've been able to accomplish. But I don't think I've ever been as happy for them or as proud of them as I am this very second.

Last year, my dad told me that we were selling the beach front property we had bought just a few years before. I didn't understand. I thought it was excessive. And, honestly, I was pretty attached to it. My dad didn't think it was good enough, so he informed that work had begun on a new property. A dream home, on the ocean. It would be the fifth house my dad has built.

He assures me that it will not be his last. I told him he was crazy. He told me that he has one or two left in him.

I tear up as I write this, in front of the Christmas tree in my living room while my dad washes dishes. I'm calling out to him to make sure I have my facts right. You see, I think of this post as a permanent documentation of the way I'm feeling right this second. I want to remember it. I want to remember the tree the looks out on the street I grew up on. I wan to remember that I want to start a fire in the gas fireplace, but don't know how and am too embarrassed to ask dad like I am every year. I should know how to do that by now. I want to remember that my mom is upstairs taking a nap. I want to remember the guilt I feel for being so self-focused in 2014. I want to remember how happy I am because I've been so self-focused in 2014. I want it to sink in how special this moment, in this living room, is to me.

I want to remember this house and sitting at the top of the stairs before we sell it and move into our new home.

Next Christmas we'll start a new tradition. I don't know what it will be. I don't know where the tree will be. I don't know how I'll sit at the top of steps since my new room opens up directly onto the living room. Will I remain trapped inside while my dad yells out that Santa came? Will I sleep downstairs so I can walk upstairs? What will happen when my parents are too old to carry presents to the tree in the morning? We'll have to figure out all of these things together.

It will be the first Christmas tradition that we figure out together. I can't wait. I'm so excited for the future as I try, desperately, to be in the present right now. When I wake up tomorrow morning, groggy, I will hold my mom extra tight at the top of the stairs. I might cry. I'm almost crying right now. My mom's awake from her nap and helping my dad with the dishes. They don't know how special this moment - this house - is to me in this very moment. It's my secret. I hate showing them that I'm sentimental. I don't want my dad thinking that he's rubbed off on me too much.___

I got to do something I never thought I'd be able to.

If you know me, you know that I have a huge thing for pandas. Specifically, I have a huge thing for red pandas. I think they are the fucking cutest, best, most stupid, most adorable creatures on the planet. Hands down. I never thought I would ever have the chance to get close to one, let alone touch one. I was wrong.

My boyfriend Shane (oh yeah. I've been dating this really hot, really nice, really awesome dude for 8months. More on that later...) told me weeks ago that I couldn't make  plans for Sunday. So I, of course, spent the coming days trying to figure out what we were doing. About an hour before we went, I figured it out. We were going to the zoo! BOOM BITCH! I figured it out. I'm a genius. I'm so smart.

Nope. I was wrong. Well, at least I didn't get the whole story.

As we're walking about the zoo, Shane is insistent that we go to the children's part of the zoo. This is very confusing for me, but hey - there's the insect house and some goats to pet. So I'm not too upset. While we're there, we run into the red pandas. Tenzing is San Francisco's red panda and the cutest red panda ever, and I make sure I spend a ton of time looking at him. I'm having the best time ever. He's eating grass. He's walking around. It's perfect. He's perfect.

As we're walking to the goats that I want to pet while I pretend they're red pandas, a zookeeper shouts out, "Shane! Hey! How are you?" She's holding a cup. It has grapes in it. They chat for a bit and she says, "Okay! I'll get everything set up and I'll see you soon." I think this is strange, so I look at Shane and ask who that is. He says he met her at an event. Shane is a grant writer for the Red Panda Network.

And then it hits me and I'm completely overcome with emotion.

By that I mean I am crying and in complete shock. I'm also embarrassed because it's Sunday and there are a lot of people at the zoo. I don't know if you've ever seen the Kristen Bell / Dax Shepard sloth video, but it was pretty close to that.

Flash forward a few minutes later and I am doing something I never, ever thought I'd do in my entire life. I am feeding a red panda. His little nose touches me and one time he licked me. One time Tenzing took the whole grape and sorta choked a little bit and I was terrified because I knew I'd have to move if I accidentally killed San Francisco's prized red panda. He was fine. Just excited.

It was perfect :D___

I just couldn't justify buying a whole tree. I'll settle for this Charlie Brown-Inspired version until I go home to the real tree. ;)

That makes it all the more disheartening to me when I see people upset at minor bugs or minor usability issues on GPlusSanta.com. I don't like people to think of this as a service that they're entitled to. I want them to think of it as a "nice thing" that's "cool to have" around the holidays. Now, the people that are frustrated are in the minority, but man, if I haven't seen it.

At the end of the day, this is the simplest, easiest to use Secret Santa yet. It's that way because I and the elves feel passionately about making sure more holiday stories come out of it. That's what we're here to do: spread cheer. :)___

Threats. Facebook. Intent. SCOTUS. And the First Amendment.

Awesome article from my friend Tess van den Dolder about threats on Facebook, intent, and the First Amendment. Also, I'm quoted in it - which makes it more awesome. Obviously.

"Social media is inherently different than an in-person conversation, sound bite, or even books. Statuses are often reactive, bite-sized chunks of information which often have certain context restricted by privacy settings or are posted to select audiences, but seen by unintended ones regardless,” Gibson explained to GVH Live. “Being a blogger, I've had my intent misconstrued despite having what I thought was an obvious tone or amount of sarcasm. I'm not sure where that line is, so I always try to engage in dialogue with a person to figure it out if I'm alarmed. Threats online are difficult. We say what we would in person, but the context is missing. I think anonymous threats are far more dangerous than ones from individuals because they don't have any context at all."___

Say it with me: I have racial bias.

I do. I have racial bias. I feel things sometimes that I know are unfair or racially motivated. Honestly, that's okay. We all do. Instead of getting defensive, I think we need to acknowledge the prejudices and biases we have in order to move past them. We need to be aware of our racial biases in our pursuit of equality. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing a lot of that introspection happening at a time it should be. Having racial bias doesn't make you racist. What makes you racist is the actions you choose to take with that bias in mind (or 'not in mind' if introspection isn't your thing). Oh, I have white privilege too. The same applies to it as well.

I saw a tweet last night that really resonated with me. It says: "White people: your privilege lives in the fact that you can be outraged, horrified, and upset about tonight. But you are not afraid." (via @jazzedloon) We need to stop being defensive about this privilege and thinking that having it means we aren't good people. Bottom line, you can't help it. You were born with it. You will die with it. How you deal with it is up to you, but we're going to move past this shit a lot faster if you acknowledge it.

Listen, I get it. Talking about race is really difficult, but talking about looting is really easy. Looting. It's wrong. Racial bias? Complicated. Nuanced. Challenging. Personally, I'm not that interested in talking about a small minority of people who abused a situation. Unfortunately, it appears that a ton of you, my Google+ peeps, are. From memes that imply black people don't have jobs to sarcastic comments about how this is "absolutely helping" to the "Why, I would never act that way!" statuses, the importance of the looting has been greatly exaggerated as people, once again, try to ignore the bigger issue and focus on something easier to understand.

To those people I say: May you never feel the anguish, frustration, or as shorted as the people protesting do now. Everyone reaches a breaking point. I empathize with the protesters, but I don't encourage violence. I say that with the knowledge that without justice, there can't be peace. Honestly, if I were in their shoes, I don't know what I would do. I'd probably want to set a car on fire too. You have no idea what it feels like to be born into a society that wasn't made for you. That doesn't mean I dismiss the actions of the looters, but it means I understand them. I try to look at all of it through that lens.

As an aside, I'm incredibly disappointed with my gay friends who say that the protests are too violent or over the top. Do you not remember what people did to get you your rights in the first place?

If you've noticed, I haven't said much about the actual verdict yet. That's on purpose. The reason why I haven't is because I'm not sure talking about it is productive yet. I'm not sure we're ready to talk about someone else's racial bias when we can't even acknowledge our own. We're not going to make any progress on deciding whether or not the grand jury made the right call if we're still thinking we aren't racist because we have black friends. So let's use this moment productively and think about what it means to have racial bias. If all we can see is looting, we have a long way to go.

I don't pray, but my thoughts are with you #Ferguson .___

Becoming an accidental hero, deserter, or role model

Disconnecting yourself is a truly strange feeling, especially when you've got followers. Now that Google+ has been around for quite some time, I've had the opportunity to engage with it and the people on it in varying degrees of intensity. From checking it all the time to not checking for months, my interest and availability has ebbed and flowed. What I struggle with is A) whether I view this platform as a place for fun or more like a job and B) people's expectations of me.

What I've found is that you can accidentally become someone's role model, enemy, hero, or biggest deserter. Every way someone paints you in their head will affect you. They will project their expectations on you, imagine themselves as more meaningful than they actually are to you, or think that they have a close connection to you... more »

They will project their expectations on you, imagine themselves as more meaningful than they actually are to you, or think that they have a close connection to you because they've been following your posts. This is the part that freaks me out the most and something I'm written about before. People can be truly hurt by you when you haven't done anything.

My actions affect people in unintended ways. I can ruin someone's day by not checking notifications. If I miss someone's important life event because I'm out of town, that person can think I'm heartless. When I took some time off here on Google+, I felt the need to tell people. It's another obligation, but that's one I think is reasonable.

There are so many people here that I still deeply care about. Even if we don't talk every single day, there are many, many people that I would help out if they reached out to me. It's possible that I'm projecting my attitude about taking a step back onto other people, but I think the lesson I'm learning is that I can't be responsible the way I make people feel sometimes - even if they've helped me in an online capacity. When you someone thinks you owe them something you don't, it gets messy. All you can really do is apologize and move on. ___

This family looks insufferable....

That being said, speaking to something in my home is pretty sweet, especially when I need to know how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon when my hands are covered in flour (seriously though).

THAT being said, the only time I've ever found the Kinect useful is that one time I had three kittens on me and Netflix wanted to know if I was still watching with my controller across the room.

"I believe two parents of the same sex raising children, while they could love the child as any other parent would, violates a child’s inherent right to both a loving mother and a father." It's funny... I feel like the way YOU feel violates my inherent right to raise well-adjusted children in a loving, supportive home free of the limitations of the 'holy way' to do things and without the fear-mongering of hell. Your absolutely unsubstantiated fear of a child missing out on a mother and father is so deeply rooted in your own idea of what child raising should look like that you ignore the overwhelming amount of science at your fingertips. Children raised by gay parents are, simply and factually, normal, adjusted, loved, articulate, and have no additional risk of longterm emotional issues other than people like you who tell them that they've been robbed.

I'm disgusted by you every time I see you post something. You end your post saying that need to show gay people love and respect, but what you imply is that you pity them and their children. You don't have love for them. You look down on them. You call their choice to raise children a poor one and liken it to child abuse. You have no idea what you're doing and are so, absolutely, wrong on this.

Let me tell you what Ryan...

When I raise my child, I will not repent. I will not tell my child that he or she is less because of the absence of a mother. Instead, I will think of you when my kid laughs, plays, socializes, and goes to college. I will, without hesitation, loudly broadcast that I have raised the most perfect child. You will be a case study to my child about how hateful, spiteful, and self-righteous some people in the world can be.___

Man. This is a great Android ad.

This is amazing differentiation from Apple and I'm glad Android nailed it so well with this spot. Android's biggest strength (outside of all that Google stuff that works so seamlessly) is the diversity of its products. From Apple's stark, monochromatic, device worship-inducing ads about the "best X ever for everyone", Android has taken a really smart step to left with an energetic ad that quickly and effectively messages "There's no one Android for everyone, but you have choices. You can express yourself with the phone you choose. There's a phone for YOU." It's a great, fun ad!

Movie adaptions of video games can work. Without agency.

I've never disagreed with Satchbag more. His conclusion is that video games adapated into movies lose player agency, choice, and atmosphere. All of this is, of course, possible, but making a blanket statement like this about art puts very little faith in creators. Movies aren't about having a choice. They're about participating in an immersive story as determined by the director, writers, producers, and countless other roles. Satchbag brings up some choices in Bioshock as being core to the game, but I never felt that my choices in any Bioshock game had massive repercussions that dramatically altered the game's narrative. Sure, I got a different ending in the original (that felt remarkably detached from the previous 15hrs), but I was in the world Kevin Levine's wanted me to be without choice for most of it. Hell. Not having choice at all is the big twist. Levine wanted to tell me a specific story about Rapture and my role in it. It's not so different than what a film director would do.

For a story driven game like The Last of Us, a movie would work brilliantly. For World of Warcraft, there's more than enough lore to create an interesting vignette. Assassin's Creed could even narrow in its scope to create a compelling story. Mario? Grand Theft Auto? Maybe not so much. I would have appreciated this video a lot more if it focused on the kind of game that could work most easily or has the greatest potential to fail. It came across that Satchbag is so desperately in love with the experience he had with Bioshock, that he rejects any other interpretation of it without considering its potential as another piece of art. We've heard this argument before about how books are better than movies - but we know it isn't necessarily true. Put in the hands of a great creator, movies based on books can become faithful representations of the spirit of their source material (I'm looking at you Paprika and Lord of the Rings). With something like Bioshock which has so much atmosphere and, frankly, a very straightforward, singular story that deviates very little throughout most of the game, I could see a movie working very nicely.

Movies don't require agency. They require believability. Is the character reacting a reasonable way to their situation? Does the atmosphere give me the same tension the game did? Is the story compelling? Did I learn something about this world? If those things succeed, agency isn't required for a masterpiece. Agency is not required for great art. People don't need agency to feel the feelings that give a game its spirit. Claiming that video games are some kind of super medium is misunderstanding the different strengths of each medium. The adaptations that work best are the ones that best take advantage of those strengths. Books for immersion and world building. Movies for feelings. Video games for agency. What matters most between them is the spirit which can be retained if treated respectfully. There's a reason Alien Isolation worked better than Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Long story short, Satchbag's conclusion misunderstands the intrinsic values of certain mediums while simultaneously ignoring successes and disasters in movie / game adaptations to protect a property he loves. That's fine. It's okay to be protective over material you love. But instead of placing video games on a pedestal, this video would have been much more agreeable if it focused on HOW Bioshock could become a movie, using examples of past adaptions that became masterpieces. It's no secret it can work if it's in the right hands.___

Comcast is making me crazy - So I'm going to do something about it

After learning that my internet speeds were slow and #Comcast  refusing to credit me for the time my modem's firmware was out of day, I've decided to do something a little wacko: record my internet speeds every single day.

Backstory
I called Comcast's billing department yesterday asking to know how long my modem's firmware has been out of date. The reason why is because I recently realized that my internet speeds are 1/3rd of what I'm paying for. My plan? To get credited for every day that my modem's firmware was out of date since its reasonable to assume that my speeds had been slow since the firmware went out of date. To get credited for every day that my modem's firmware was out of date since its reasonable to assume that my speeds had been slow since the firmware went out of date. Comcast updated my firmware a few days ago giving me the speeds I required, only to have the speed dip again back to where it was, reaching an incredible 2mps down yesterday.

The call
Immediately when I called I was told, "Bro. You can't just call and say your internet's been slow for a month. You thought it was just dandy. I mean, come on bro." Yes. They called me bro and tried to start a fight like I was talking to someone in a bar. Let's not forget that you pay for peace of mind when you get a fast plan. I don't expect to push it to its limits every damn second. I eventually talked him down and he told me he could only credit me for the days I could prove my internet was slow. I asked him to tell me the day my modem went out of date and to credit me every day since then. He didn't like that and told me again I'd have to prove the slow speeds. I asked if this meant that I would have to use Speedtest.net every day and call every day. He said no. I said that that's what he was telling me to do. He said no.

So here's what I'm going to do
I'm going to do a Speed Test every. single. day. and take a selfie in front of it in my apartment to prove that it is, indeed, in my apartment. Is it crazy? Vindictive? Annoying? Fuck yes it is, but holy shit am I dedicated to showing them that I'm paying for more than I'm getting. Comcast, like a punk ass teenager, apparently need constant checking-in with.

I can't wait to publish my results :)___

I hate Comcast.

Long story short, my internet speeds have been 1/3rd of the advertised for some undetermined length of time.

I noticed when I thought Destiny was lagging. It shouldn't have been as my apartment's internet plan is 105 down, 20 up (we use about 600 gigs every month as a house). Running a speed test yesterday, I found out it was 45 down, 20 up. So I contacted support and they said that they would do a health check on my modem. That's when I learned my modem's firmware was out of date yadda yadda yadda. So they rebooted it and touted, "Mission accomplished! I'm seeing great improvement!" My speeds had increased by 10mps, brining it to 54 down. I told them this and they said that it should take 24hrs.

Oooookay.

So then I searched my inbox for Speed Tests that I've done and it was all over the map. From 50 down to 120 down, it was obvious that my internet (which is really expensive) was not living up to its promise. So I asked for a credit. I sent them links to my other speed tests and their answer was: Buy the Triple Play plan for only $30 more a month! Are. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me.

What bothers me most about this that I had to check myself and contact them. They don't care if my speeds are super slow compared to what I'm paying for. They also don't treat me like a customer, instead viewing me as a sales opportunity even in support interactions. So I guess I get to run speed tests at regular intervals to check up on my service going forward? Ugh. Come. On.

Caveat: Yes, I know that every site won't have 105mps speed, but a speed test absolutely should be the advertised speed.___

Fighting a $150,000 fine in Oregon for discrimination after refusing to bake a lesbian couple a wedding cake, this woman broke into tears describing her process at the Values Voters Summit (a Republican summit as exemplified by the clapping in the video). What's funny to me is that it appears her "values" aren't about her intricate process of making people happy with highly personalized cakes, but rather with discriminating against certain people who aren't like her. Now, this makes me happy - and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Is someone sad? Yes, absolutely. Are sad people good? No, not always. Don't try to be politically correct by saying, "You shouldn't relish in anyone's unhappiness." Untrue. What you're witnessing when you're watching this is someone experiencing a consequence. This person is realizing that her actions are not socially acceptable and not in the greater interest of their declared values. While I'm not saying we shouldn't be empathetic at the risk of making these people double down, we need to realize that moments like this advance equality across the nation. It's not an easy realization for everyone to make.

In a post on Facebook she quotes evangelical pastor Rick Warren in response to her bakery shutting down: "...to love someone means that you must agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate." Well. Yes. Yes actually you do. What a dangerous, dangerous belief if helping people is your honest motive.

God damn it. I'm addicted to Destiny.

Destiny is deeply flawed first person MMO that ultimately succeeds because of its refined mechanics. While Bungie is clearly committed to supplying players with continuous new content, Destiny holds too much back for its own good. It feels incomplete, but hey - at least character progression and loot drops are exciting. Despite the game completely failing on many of its fronts, Destiny's a game that keeps bringing me back time and time again to play with my friends and continue crafting a badass Warlock.

Story
Destiny's story is shallow, incoherent, and obviously an afterthought. It's a shame given the amount of potential in its top-level lore. There's a Traveler that brings light with it.

The Darkness is coming to kill the Traveler in the form of several alien races. You play as a Guardian who tries to stop the Darkness from hurting the Traveler. There was a great war. Paired with the game's epic and detailed set dressing, there's more than enough to create a compelling story. Unfortunately, the story doesn't go deeper than the opening cut scene and it's the biggest disappoint about Destiny.

A simple story isn't always a bad thing, but Destiny's is hackneyed, shallow, and delivered poorly. The characters start to sound like parodies of sci-fi tropes early in story, dramatically referencing vague events that are never explained. There's only so much, "Light is good. Dark is bad." that the player can be hit over the head with. It's hard to care about what you're doing when most of the story gets drowned out by gunfire and you know little to nothing about the enemies you're fighting other than their weak points. Unfortunately, the most interesting parts of the story (read: almost all of the actual lore) are only available on Bungie's website.

Destiny left me hurting - badly - for an interactive experience more like Mass Effect. In Destiny, there are no characters to talk to, nothing to read in-game about what you're seeing, and nothing or no one to care about. Moderately interesting characters do show up about halfway through the story, but their mystery is left a mystery with absolutely zero arc. You don't know their motivations or back stories - and you never find out. Who is this mysterious figure? Why is this woman telling me to get something? Why don't I ever see them again? Who are the Awoken or Exo? The player is left without any answers, shy of a short paragraph that they can read online.

Games' stories should be allowed to grow over time, but Destiny's doesn't go anywhere in the 10ish hours it takes to complete the campaign. It's an unacceptable outcome for a game with so much more to give. Destiny's story is, surely, already determined, but Bungie left so much of it out that it ultimately hurts the player's sense of purpose. It would be especially annoying if the story players want is included (exclusively) in DLC. Bungie should not be excused for their mishandling of Destiny's story delivery. I want to know more, but Bungie gave me nothing.

Gameplay
This is where Bungie nails it and it's hard to stress this so much because it's a feeling. My review may sound negative, but THIS is why it's so fun. The combat in Destiny is obviously its own, despite its similarities to Halo's. There are familiar enemies from Bungie's past games, but it's also extremely rewarding to nail head shots, take down massive enemies, and strategize about how to take out a room of enemies. If it wasn't so fun, or if the shooting didn't feel so snappy, the game would have been a tiresome trek since the game's missions repeat over and over again. Repetition is the name of the game. Ride on your Sparrow to an objective. Deploy your Ghost. Defeat waves of enemies. Take on a mini-boss. Take on the main boss. That's it. There are absolutely zero set piece moments, and I was left struggling to remember an especially exciting story mission.

Luckily, players are given special Strike missions that keep things interesting. After level 20, Destiny becomes and entirely new experience. The challenges are a high-octane blast and clearly the best part of the game. With new missions promised for quite some time, console gamers are given the MMO experience that PC players have had for years - and that's a good thing. With the promise - but not always delivery - of legendary loot, these missions are Destiny's end game that will keep players for months. With special shopkeepers that only come on the weekends, there are tons of reasons to keep coming back. There's clearly a lot borrowed from Diablo and World of Warcraft, but it ultimately creates a very compelling experience.

While the Strike missions are varied and often enrapturing, the same can't be said for Destiny's weapons or classes. There are only minor differences between the Hunter, Warlock, and Titan, all of whom bear the same, generic weapons. Classes may have different jumps (the Warlock's glide is especially useless), but they all have a set of grenades, ultimates, and stat-boosts. Sure, the Hunter is faster and the Titan has more armor, but there's very little mastery required for each class. Character progression is ultimately tied to loot since the "skill tree" only has a very variants to choose from. It's all very familiar and leaves you wanting more sci-fi in your sci-fi, but the game is easy to pick up and play. Hopefully Bungie will introduce more exciting ways to take out your enemies in future updates. The raid is a GREAT first step and the Queen's missions spice things up even more.

The Crucible is a bare bones PvP game type that is fun, but poorly balanced with matchmaking that makes it incredibly hard to enjoy. Level 5 players are playing against level 25's, and with abilities from the main game carrying over, the Crucible is not a welcoming place. On top of that, there are very few game modes, no variants, and, like Destiny' story, feels intentionally incomplete. I didn't spend much time in the Crucible and don't see a reason to as someone who doesn't often play competitive PvP.

Oh, and if you play a Warlock, you don't have a double jump. The game HATES you for this until you upgrade your abilities.

Social
Destiny is the most isolationist MMO I've ever played - which is a shame because it's best played with friends. The Tower, where Guardians go to mingle and buy better gear, feels devoid of life. Though all maps are multiplayer, you won't find too many other players out in the world with you. There are only four ways to emote, and no way to say, "Hey! Come with me on a strike!" There's no proximity voice chat - but I'm really not sure gamers deserve that given the number of awful things they're very comfortable spewing into their microphone. Bungie, very obviously, wants you to play with your actual friends. This creates a better user-experience - unless none of your friends are online. Once you do start playing with friends though, it's incredibly fun and strategic to work together in fire teams, despite the decision to limit them to three instead of four players.

Presentation
Destiny is beautiful, but generic. The textures look great on the PS4, but items are reused so often that I had a hard time differentiating areas. Indoor areas look like every other indoor area. Every planet has a dilapidated city. Every area is laid out as arenas with narrow passage ways connecting them. Despite the repetition, the areas are beautiful, if not lacking in character. Sci-fi has been done so much better so many other times, but there's no denying that Destiny looks good. The sky boxes don't always work (especially with a ship superimposed on top of it), but when they do they really wow. Dynamic day and night cycles always look amazing and the lighting always looks dramatic and natural. Unfortunately, not everything always does. Especially noticeable was that character's faces don't animate unless they're a robot, with your character's helmet on in all cut scenes. This makes it hard to identify with your avatar. Character design is often good, though two certain characters you meet look like emo rock stars. All in all though, the presentation sometimes wows, but obvious considerations were made for last gen consoles, making this game look like it could have existed years ago.

Overall
Destiny is very lucky to be very fun and be focused on ongoing content because so many other parts of it fall so flat. Despite the completely lackluster story, the co-op, constant new content, and loot keeps me coming back time and time again. The game is simply very fun when these parts align. 8/10

OH! And if you want to play with me, send me a friend request! I'm CartaGEE on PS4.

If Apple released this instead of a iPod Nano with a wrist band, it could have made the Moto360 look like an ugly, industrial behemoth. But it didn't. THIS is what the #AppleWatch  should have been.

Thinking on it more, Apple really missed with the Apple Watch.

Apple Watch looks stuck in the past while other manufacturers give us a glimmer of what wearables can be in the future. These are first generation devices, and they're not expected to be perfect, but Apple released something that looks remarkably like the most boring of wearables already available from Samsung and LG. They did NOT create a new product category. On top of that, with no mention of battery life, screen resolution, or internals, I'm not sure what's setting this watch apart other than its astronomical price tag of $350 and its iPhone compatibility. Unless, of course, you want to sext by sharing your heart rate.

The Motorola Moto360 may not play well with Android Wear's square menus right now, but when I look at first generation devices, I look for a window into what a product CAN be. The Moto360 does that in spades, whereas the Apple Watch reminds me, a little too much, of the Nano wristwatch. Siri hasn't been delivering lately on its promises as Google Now excels, and those features are, essentially, the backbone of a wearable for at-a-glance notifications. Apple didn't talk a lot about the specs inside the watch, but it doesn't look like the step forward Apple is historically known for (although, those straps were very nice). That excitement was quenched by Motorola. Who wants to fiddle with an analog nub when there's a touchscreen right there?

As for more integration, Google has been going full steam ahead on Android Wear and they'll have the first mover advantage of knowing what their consumers want by having products out in the market for almost a year before the Apple Watch comes out. Again, as with most first-gen devices, I'm not too worried about that sort of stuff. I know it's coming - and fast!

Sidebar: that smiley face Apple displayed.... oh god. Is it 2002? Haha. So bad!

Anyways, that's where I'm coming with all of this and why I see the Moto360 as a much more promising piece of hardware and vision of what a smart watch can be. I mean, just look below. Which one do you think looks most 'Apple'? Which one makes you go, "THAT'S what a wearable should look like!"?___

Sorry Apple. I think you've been bested.

Can you tell which one is Apple and which one is Android? The times have changed kiddos. Apple is, officially, no longer the greatest tech designer. I'll opt out of the Apple WATCH - Nano Wrist Edition.

Getting LBF back on track.

I’m not above admitting when I bite off more than I can chew, and that’s exactly what I did with +The LittleBigFund.

It’s been a few months since we featured new nonprofits and our communication has gone dark. This is entirely and completely my fault, but I'm excited about using what I learned to start fresh. Without going too deep into why LittleBigFund went dark, my professional career unexpectedly went to a new level, I retreated after burning out, and I lost a little bit of my passion in the project after I gave away a little too much responsibility in managing LBF’s day-to-day. I find solace, however, in knowing that doing anything is better than doing nothing.

I broke my promises to my community and myself.
This one kills me the most and the reason I, admittedly, avoided getting LBF back on track sooner. As a professional Community Manager, letting my community down is the literal worst thing I can do. LittleBigFund promised to actively communicate, be transparent, and help nonprofits every month. We learned our lesson here.

‘Draw the rest of the fucking owl.’
There's an image out there with two steps to drawing an owl. Step one is two circle. Step two is "draw the rest of the fucking owl." Starting The LittleBigFund and getting it off the ground was like drawing the circles. I knew how to do it and it worked. After that I got a little lost and it got incredibly daunting. ‘Drawing the rest of the fucking owl’ takes a lot of consistent effort. I frequently sat down to ‘draw’ and didn’t see an end in sight. So I got up instead of scribbling something down. It got worse with time as ownership and tasks piled up.

So what now? How do we make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Failure is an unacceptable outcome. Just do it.
Dropping the ball on something I care very deeply about is a tough lesson to learn. At the recent age of 24, I have a lot of passions, projects, and adventuring to do - but I’m also responsible for all of my actions. As a terribly consistent procrastinator, I’ve thought about a few ways I can avoid getting under water again. They include content scheduling, a regular date and time to work, a scheduling calendar, and taking back more day-to-day decisions so I don’t have to wait for board approval. Additionally, I’m more than happy to bring someone along with me to help and am keeping options open.

Some initiatives, like a Google+ Community, were a distraction. It’s time to focus on The LittleBigFund’s storytelling and fundraising core above all else.

Nothing wasted.
All donation received over the past few months will be evenly distributed across the next  three cycles. All operating expenses except for hosting will go to deserving nonprofits. Your donations are safe, sound, and ready to help out.

Longer cycles
Three nonprofits a month were too much. Instead, we will be moving to three nonprofits every two months, for a total of six cycles a year. Subscriptions will still be monthly, and this will give us more time to raise more for fantastic causes.

Rebuilding trust.
Finally, I’d like to sincerely apologize to The LittleBigFund’s supporters, believers, donors, board, team, and lurkers. This nonprofit project has so much promise left in it and you’ve all helped get it this far. It’s time for it grow up and for me to give you all a reason to believe in it again. Momentum was lost, but it can be earned back by doing exactly what The LittleBigFund should have been doing. I’m more ready than ever (and humbled) to do it again.

The LittleBigFund will feature three new nonprofits this month.

Thanks for your continued support.___

There have always been people with amazing opinions. Unfortunately, those people couldn't always get their opinions out to a wide audience. With the internet though, they can. The internet has always been a place of discovery for people to find like-minded individuals. When all of the 'others' come together you find out you aren't as isolated as you once thought you were. Starting with forums, people slowly figured out that they weren't so alone with their opinions, problems, joys, and preferences. As access to the internet expanded, there's seemingly an opinion to everything that someone will relate to. Everyone has a voice.

It doesn't take long to see how important our individual voices are. I'm sure you can think of many instances where a certain threshold of comments online lead to real, permanent change. All of a sudden, our voices decide what the press talks about, and not the other way around. That's incredibly powerful and it comes with some new responsibility. We're liable for what we say, our facts have to be correct, and when we speak we have to be ready to be a part of a conversation. We understand that we will be challenged or backed up with every claim we make. By being exposed to so many opinions so rapidly, we come to understand that every issue is less black and white than we originally thought.

With even CEO's participating in AMA's, I'm so thrilled that we've entered into an era where not only does everyone have the ability to voice their opinions, but that they're expected to. Participation in society makes it better and the collective problem solving we do every day is magical. Think about it the next time you post a status.

Resident Evil did the same, and then the once-promising Dead Space abandoned its roots as well. I pretty much gave up on AAA survival horror games, relinquishing anything scary to indie developers.

Imagine. How. STOKED I was during Gamescom when a new Silent Hill game was announced. Initially skeptical, any worries I had were gone the moment I head that the game was being headed up by Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear) and Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, etc). Silent Hill would return to its narrative roots! It was hope that the thought put into Silent Hill 2's enemies would return. On top of that, Kojima doesn't give audiences what they want. He doesn't care about tradition and he's exactly what the series needs to adapt to modern game mechanics. To help support this, 'PT' was released last night as a 'Playable Teaser' for Silent Hills (the new game) and is one of the best pieces of video game marketing I have EVER seen.

Here are some of my reactions:
- PT uses the Fox Engine and the graphic fidelity is insane. The image below is NOT a photograph.
- The "demo" lasts about 1 to 2 hours and that's more than enough.
- It's positively terrifying. PT is scarier and gives a better sense of place than most recent horror games. There's an awesome amount of detail within the house.
- Fucked up 'creatures' make a return in a really uncomfortable way.
- Hideo Kojima isn't afraid to do grisly things to characters. This was obvious in Ground Zeroes and now in PT. If fetuses are what they tackle in the TEASER, I can't wait to see more fucked up shit.
- Starting a Silent Hill teaser in first person is ballsy and fucks with expectations. Silent Hill is a third person game through and through, and I think that the full game will indeed be third person (as indicated from the final cutscene). They wouldn't pay an actor as famous as Norman Reedus to not show him, especially with all that fancy mo-cap.
- Ghosts? I wasn't too thrilled about ghosts. Silent Hill isn't a ghost game, but I'll roll with it for now.
- PT frustrates the player. A lot of it is random, demands patiences, and leaves the player feels lost, angry, annoyed, and anxious - EXACTLY what a game like this should do.
- I'm not sure how this will stack up against The Evil Within which is coming out later this year, but my money is on Silent Hills.
- Atmosphere was present absolutely everywhere. Your surroundings would change as you kept going through the looping door and you never knew what to expect. PT surprised me many, many times.
- The narrative style of Silent Hill is making an obvious return. Listening to the radio, reading the walls, looking at photographs, etc. "Look behind you. I said, look behind you." AH!
- Jump scares were fine. I've read some people complain about them, but meh.
- Why Silent Hills with an 'S'? The looping doors and narration seem to indicate alternate realities (something familiar to Silent Hill), but given The Order's symbol being the loading icon, I think Silent Hill has expanded past the 'real' Silent Hill. The game will surely be about a man's descent into madness, and messing with perception, reality, and dimensions are just as fitting as they once were.

So. Am I stoked? Yes. Is this the greatest thing that could have happened? Probably.___

Aren't we all? Regardless, we should always be considerate of content creators and do our best to accurately attribute credit when possible.

Last night I made the incredibly rash decision to buy last minute tickets to Beyonce and Jay-Z's On the Run tour. I regret nothing. Say what you will about Beyonce (and the only thing that's reasonable to say is that she is perfect and awe-inspiring and amazing), but she is undoubtedly an incredibly singer. She hit every single note, danced her ass off, and had incredibly stage presence. She knew EXACTLY what to do to get the crowd riled up.

The stage was the main stage from Coachella and the audio quality was super crisp. Unfortunately, there was serious reverb off the back of AT&T park especially when Jay-Z was performing. I imagine that they tilted the speakers down due to noise complaints after the first night.

Technically, the show was incredible. The video was crystal clear. The lights were massive. There were trap doors and stripper poles and props and ahhhhh! Video bits played between songs and told the story of Beyonce and Jay-Z on the run as gangsters. Cheesy? Sure. But it was a blast. The screens would move around constantly as well, always giving people something to look at.

The set list rocked, but I was a little sad XO and End of Time weren't performed. Countdown had it's usual moment as a transition piece and Ring the Alarm was a huge highlight.

They had chemistry during the show, but at one point Jay held Beyonce from behind and it did NOT look appreciated. They were more lovey dovey at the end, but there some moments of tension - and I don't think I'm projecting.

Jay-Z was (mostly) good for bathroom breaks.___

Fortress of Solitude.

My boyfriend and I have a saying: "I'm going to Fortress of Solitude tonight." What it means is, "I'd like to be alone tonight." It's an understood necessity that we need time to recollect our thoughts, recharge, and focus on our passions for a little while. My boyfriend is an introvert, so it makes sense that he needs this time, but increasingly I, as an extrovert, have been needing this time more and more. My roommate picked up on this too saying, "You seem less extroverted now. Well... you're still super extroverted but you seem to need more alone time." She's right and I think I figured out why.

I have a set reserve of emotional energy that I can spend. I spend it differently every day but it eventually runs out. As my roots grow deeper and deeper into my work, relationship, and city, I spend more and... more »

I have a set reserve of emotional energy that I can spend. I spend it differently every day but it eventually runs out. As my roots grow deeper and deeper into my work, relationship, and city, I spend more and more of it. I'm highly involved at my company. Being in San Francisco longer means more friends to meet up with. As someone who's been single over three years until recently, I'm relearning a lot about myself in my new relationship. It's... a lot to spend my emotional energy on but I love every second of it.

A few months ago, I burned myself out. Work was insane, my nonprofit became too much to handle, and my personal life was nonstop mayhem (in the greatest way possible). It didn't help that I would use the hours of midnight and 2am to relax and unwind. This can only last so long. Soon, I was too tired to catch up with what I needed to do. For the first time in my life, I let emails stack up, notifications go unread, and was ignoring text messages from even my best friends. I'm not sure whether to blame technology and how easy it made finding me or myself taking on more than I can chew, but the bottom line was that I needed to cut back.

The fear of missing out is real, especially these days, but the more I communicated that I was going to be alone, the happier I was doing things that were normally enjoyable. Alone time has become a necessity in my elder year of 24, and it makes life mean more. Not every moment needs to be lived 'in the moment' and I find myself coming out of my Fortress of Solitude with a revitalized understanding of what's important to me. Don't be afraid of being alone for a bit - even if you're as extroverted as I am.

Do you have a story about #TheNew  Alone Time? I want to hear it. See how Chevy's doing the same here: http://s.chevy.com/PLg #Sponsored  ___

My weekend.

My boyfriend Shane and I (along with my good friend James and his boyfriend) retreated into the wilderness this weekend to camp, hike, cliff jump, eat, and pretend to be mountain goats. We looked on +Google Earth for some small lakes to the northwest of Tahoe and decided that Downey lake would be the greatest to go to. We were right.

It was glorious and I loved every second of it. Actually, I'm ready to go back. Right. Now.

California's drought is not great.

This is Folsom Lake near Sacramento. It's sad because it's dry. If you're living in California, be aware of your water use. Also, don't water your lawn if you have one :)

Man. The amount of time we spend defending our 'right' to prove we're the biggest asshole on the internet is astonishing. "No. I won't think about whether or not being a troll hurts my or the internet's ability to be a persuasive, legitimate, and respectable force in the world because being a troll is funny. I like funny."

Sigh... People need to understand that, in order for their voice to be taken seriously, that they need to not harass the people they want to listen to them. Thinking being a dick for the sake of being a dick is unnecessary shouldn't be a controversial thought.

There are better ways to make a point.
