The full release of the Android 5.0 SDK is now available! Download today and get started with the many features and capabilities in the newest version of Android. If you have existing apps, make sure to test them soon so they will be ready for the first devices to get Android 5.0 in early November!

If you're currently developing using the L Developer Preview, you should migrate to the new SDK. Android 5.0 introduces a new API level -- 21 -- and it has variations from the L Developer Preview API. In some cases you'll need to bring your app up-to-date with the new APIs.

Starting today you can also publish your apps that target API level 21 in Google Play. If you are developing for Android TV, watch for more information coming soon about how to publish your apps to Android TV users through Google Play.

With the latest release of Android Wear, build apps that work for wearables with built-in GPS technology!

With the latest release of Android Wear, wearables with built-in GPS like the Sony Smartwatch 3 can now give you a GPS location update directly from the wearable, without a paired phone nearby. You can now build an app like MyTracks that lets a user track their run even when they leave their phone at home. Implementing GPS location updates for Android Wear is simple. Learn more from Developer Advocate +Wayne Piekarski in the blog post below.

Smart Autofill - Predict with ease using the power of Machine Learning

Smart Autofill - Harnessing the predictive power of Machine Learning in Google Sheets

Much of Google’s work on language, speech, translation, and visual processing relies on machine learning, where we construct and apply learning algorithms that make use of labeled data in order to make predictions for new data. What if you could leverage machine learning algorithms to learn patterns in your spreadsheet data, automatically build a model, and infer unknown values?

You can now use machine learning to make predictions in Google Sheets with the newly launched Smart Autofill Add-on (http://goo.gl/dghCQs). Smart Autofill uses Google's cloud-based machine learning service Prediction API (http://goo.gl/WmHyAa), which trains several linear as well as non-linear classification and regression models to predict the missing values of a partially filled column in your spreadsheet by using the data of other related columns.

For more information and a tutorial, head over to the Google Research Blog.___Smart Autofill - Predict with ease using the power of Machine Learning

We know you have a need for speed, and here's a change that makes things faster. Update your snippets!

All Google+ widgets have been updated to use the script[async + defer] pattern! E.g. +1 button docs: http://bit.ly/YHoj96

What's the benefit? Loading widgets via script[async+defer] does not block the document parser (see [1]), and allows the preload scanner to discover the script resource and initiate an earlier fetch (see [2]). Net outcome, both your page and the widget load faster! Have a G+ widget on your page? Check out the docs for guidance on how to update your snippets.

Kudos to the G+ team for taking the lead on this! Hope to see more widget providers adopt the same pattern.

Did yesterday's teaser make you hungry? Here's the main dish!

Sudoku, Linear Optimization, and the Ten Cent Diet

Yesterday, we posted an image of a tasty looking dish, and asked you to guess what it had to do with Computer Science. The dish, Foie Linéaire à la Stigler, was made from a list of ingredients that are the solution to the “Stigler Diet”, a classic linear optimization problem (http://goo.gl/JUDpTg).

Today we’re proud to announce two new ways for everyone to solve linear optimization problems. First, you can now solve them in Google Sheets with the Linear Optimization add-on; Second, we’re open-sourcing the linear solver underlying the add-on, Glop (the Google Linear Optimization Package), as part of the or-tools suite.

At Google, our engineers work on plenty of optimization problems, such as the YouTube video stabilization system, and the lighthearted Google Sheets Sudoku add-on. Head over to the Google Research Blog, linked below, to learn more.___Did yesterday's teaser make you hungry? Here's the main dish!
