Graeme McRae30,763Graeme's Circle of Active GooglePlussers! . . . This is a curated circle of active people on Google+ If you add this circle, you will see hundreds of new posts per day in your stream from this circle alone. If you’re in the circle (you’ll know ‘cause I notified you) then please reshare it! It's a circle of people I started following in May, and who have consistently posted something at least once a week during all of weeks since then. If you want an interesting stream, you should add this circle. If you're interested in how I curated this circle, and why I think it makes for a really great stream, read on. . .How did these people get in the circle?. . . They must have posted something interesting, at least once, because I don't follow people unless they post something interesting. By now, you're probably not surprised by the number of people on G+ whose pages are full of repeated posts, videos without comments, "what's up" and other uninteresting things. I don't follow those people. How did they stay in the circle since they were added?. . . After I add someone, I keep them in the circle of people I added around the same time. Then, several times a week, I go through all my circles and delete people who haven't posted (something visible to me) in the last 7 days. So the people who are left in the circle are consistent posters. That says something important about them, because consistency is a proxy for quality.Wait. What? Why is consistency is a proxy for quality?. . . I'll admit it: I don't have the science to back up that wild statement, but I'll tell you why I believe it to be true. People who post crap don't get a lot of followers, and the few followers they have don't bother to engage. After a while, the crappy-posting people start to think G+ is a ghost town, and they lose interest (or funding). On the other hand, the people who share (or re-share) interesting things get followers and engagement, slowly at first, but ever increasing, and this outpouring of love is what keeps them going. That's what I think anyway, and I'm sticking to it.People who share interesting things get lots of followers. . . This is another half-baked theory of mine, but hear me out. You might think this makes sense: Google+ offers suggestions of people to follow, especially to new users. Google+'s only source of names to suggest is other G+ers like yourself. The G+ers who have the most engagement are the ones Google+ knows will be good to follow, so these people get put out as suggestions more often, and some percentage of those suggestions are taken up. So the more engagement you have, the more Google+ will suggest you as a person to follow, and so the more followers you'll get. Completing the theory: the more interesting the stuff you share (or reshare), the more engagement you'll get, and hence the more followers you'll get.Do you punish people for unfollowing you by unfollowing them back?. . . No. Well, not directly. I only unfollow people who haven’t posted in the past 7 days. If you posted privately to your circles or your extended circles, and then you unfollow me, then I won’t see those posts any more, and I’ll assume you haven’t posted in the past 7 days, and, yes, I will unfollow you in that case. But if your posts are public, my methodology doesn’t care whether you follow me.Do you promise me there won’t be any spammers in this circle?. . . No, I can’t make that promise for 2 reasons. First, one person’s spam is another person’s interesting post. A plumbing contractor who posts fascinating details of pipe fitting, each with a link to his company’s website might go either way. Second, a clever spammer will intersperse interesting posts with annoying spam -- maybe 52014-08-12 05:51:49351364762

Kai Saffron8,422ANTI-CENSORSHIP CIRCLEThis circle is a highly diverse group of people, some of whom I've known here awhile and some new to me.The one thing that all these people have in common is that based on their plusses, comments, and reshares during my relentless onslaught of anti-censorship propaganda yesterday (and if you can read this- thanks for not blocking me!), it is pretty reasonable to assume they all agree that information needs to be free and censorship works against that.... and also maybe that the world would be a better place if more people learned to mind their own damn business! Anyone can be added or removed from this circle, and I will continue working on refining it.If not much happens in your Google+ stream, or if you just might be interested in introducing some new people to it, you might want to consider adding this circle.Feel free to share! And SCREW 'EM IF THEY CAN'T TAKE A JOKE! #StopCensorship   #StopCensorship   #StopCensorship   #ghostowngoogleplus  2012-08-10 11:53:5320233620

Peter Edenist2,051Main SCI-FI Circle Sunday share*I take this opportunity to share my feelings with all the wonderful people in my main SF circle. While I am constantly changing this Circle, I have added Circle SF2 as well.Recently it has come to my notice that people are putting up barriers to joining groups and circling - sharing, prove you're good enough etc. etc. I don't do that - I am a geek and I respect your inner geek. You may be interested in Science and SF and not hold a degree in astronomy, but if that's your geek I respect you. Everyone is welcome to my circles and all you have to do is say "I like that add me" and you're in.I do this completely pro bono - you don't have to add me, or reshare (I really wish you would reshare though since it makes my job easier). I spend substantial time here to keep my SF and Science passion fed!!!There - hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the wonderful people in this circle. Josh Ferry Woodard1,098Short Story Writers CircleRead my short story and re-share if you like it"I'm flamboyant… And I'm drunk." Sir William announces himself to me as he walks into the bar gracefully and stands beside me.He is an old man with grey hair, a large potbelly and relaxed wrists. He is wearing a smart light blue shirt that is tucked into his well-fitted black trousers. His friendly eyes, magnified slightly by his spectacles, give the impression of youthful exuberance curbed by worldly wisdom. His tanned skin is surprisingly healthy and his lack of wrinkles reflects his sanguine attitude toward life. We are sat in a booth at the back of the bar and Sir William is telling me about his experiences. He was a carpenter, and a sailor, and a saint, and a soldier, his father was an editor and his daughter is the Personal Relations manager for Manchester United Football Club. His sister is Korean, but North or South "It does not matter which because anybody who tries to differentiate between the two, really doesn’t understand Korea.”He asks me about my ambitions and is thrilled to talk about travelling the globe. He boasts of his time as a sailor: “I spent many years of my youth, enjoying day after day on the world’s most exotic beaches, building up an appetite to devour the local cuisine.” He leans in closer to me and holds my gaze, speaking softly and slowly. “And the thing is it does not matter if you speak their language, these women are sensual beings, they can communicate in the language of love.” And that is something to be treasured, he assures me.It seems something has struck a chord within him and he orders vodka lemon-limes for the two girls sitting opposite us. When the drinks arrive he beckons the two girls over. One blonde and one ginger, but both beautiful and young. At first they appear withdrawn, in their body language and in their conversation. But before the drinks need topping up, they are both drawn to his eccentricities and I can feel his aura of warmth enveloping their inhibitions; banishing them like a charm or a spell.“Sir William, why are you called Sir William?” The blond girl asks.“Well, because I am, a sir.” He replies, as if that was an explanation. “It all started when I was kicked out of Kings College at the modest age of twelve…”He goes on to describe a completely different story of how he and “good old Leo Wilkins” hijacked a cement mixer and took it on a joy-ride around “half of the school” demolishing a triplet of brand new tennis courts. The guilty apparatus was later found jammed into a freshly blossomed cherry tree draped with wondrous pink petals. Even the groundsman, he tells us, was compelled to appreciate the juxtaposition of the tragic tableau. But it was not enough. And he was therefore expelled from Kings College in the autumn. It turns out that his exclusion from all boys school opened a whole new world to the young William. Instantly, the advent of girls into his life affected him deeply. On the very eve of his first day at Thames-Valley Comprehensive he attended a raucous evening dinner that swiftly metamorphosed into a “decadent all-night-long party complete with booze, cigarettes, nudity and casualties. And this at the tender age of twelve!” One girl was found unconscious of alcohol poisoning, so William - ever the pragmatist - swiftly whisked off her clothes and placed her in the healing comfort of the cold bath. The girls are waiting on his each and every, soothing and well-articulated, word throughout this recollection so talk of his knighthood subsides. He asks the girls about their marital status and we find out that he is divorced but is currently having an affair with the head of the Merseyside Metropolitan Police Station. He tells us that she is fifty-four years old and has “tremendous breasts - d2012-04-28 17:14:53200113
Matthew Trotter63Okay. I've been collecting shared #writer / #reader circles for the past week or so, and I thought I'd share our combined efforts. Of course, G+ only allows you to share 500 people at a time, so this isn't a complete list, but it's pretty substantial.I've had a blast talking to and getting to know all of you over this past week or so. I've laughed, learned, and loved—a lot. I hope this circle will provide you the same pleasure that it has provided me.And just because you don't see yourself doesn't mean you're not in my circle. Like I said, there's a 500 person sharing limit. Still, if there's any doubt, you can ask to be added. I'm more than happy to.Much writerly love and salud,MattP.S. EARTH's MAGNETIC FIELD ABOUT TO REVERSE ITS POLARITY !!!

Earth’s magnetic field has flipped a number of times throughout its 4.5 billion year history.  The magnetic north pole became the magnetic south pole and vice versa.
A study conducted by an international team of scientists found that planet Earth is again on the verge of magnetic field reversal.  They said the last time this happened was about 786,000 years ago, taking about 100 years, a relatively short time to do so.
Usually the magnetic field remains steady and at the same intensity for thousands or millions of years but for reasons that scientists can’t explain, the field weakens and then flips direction over a period of about a couple of thousand  years.
Increasingly new evidence has led scientists to determine that Earth’s magnetic field intensity is dropping by a rate of 10 times as fast that it normallywould.more »

OSTEOPOROSIS

What Is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis, which means "porous bones," is a condition that causes bones to gradually thin and weaken, leaving them susceptible to fractures. Our bones are strongest at about age 30, then begin to lose density.
Due to its prevalence worldwide, osteoporosis is considered a serious public health concern. Currently it is estimated that over 200 million people worldwide suffer from this disease. Approximately 30% of all postmenopausal women have osteoporosis in the United States and in Europe. At least 40% of these women and 15-30% of men will sustain one or more fragility fractures in their remaining lifetime. About 2 million fractures occur each year due to osteoporosis.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis:
You might not even realize you have osteoporosis until you have a fracture or an obvious change in posture. In fact, you could have significant bone loss without even knowing it. Back pain, caused by changes in the vertebrae, may be the first sign that something is wrong.

Osteoporosis and Fractures:
Osteoporosis is the underlying cause of 1.5 million fractures every year. Spinal compression fractures are the most common -- tiny fractures that can cause the vertebrae to collapse and alter the shape of the spine. Hip fractures can cause lasting mobility problems and even increase the risk of death. Wrist, pelvic, and other fractures are also common in people with osteoporosis.

What Causes Osteoporosis?
Our bones are constantly being rebuilt throughout our lifetime. Bones are made up of collagen, a protein that provides the basic framework, and calcium phosphate, a mineral that hardens the bone. As we age, we lose more bone than we replace. The greatest change in a woman's bone density comes in the five to seven years after menopause.

Does Everyone Get Osteoporosis?
Bone loss is a natural part of aging, but not everyone will lose enough bone density to develop osteoporosis. However, the older you are, the greater your chance of having osteoporosis. Women's bones are generally thinner than men's and bone density has a rapid decline for a time after menopause, so it's not surprising that about 80% of Americans with osteoporosis are women.

Risk Factors You Can't Control:
Women who are thin and have a small frame are more likely to develop osteoporosis. Heredity plays a role, and so does ethnicity. It is more common among whites and Asians, though African-Americans and Hispanics may still be at risk. Some conditions, such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and hormonal disorders are also linked to bone loss.

Risk Factors You Can Control:
Smoking, an inactive lifestyle, and a diet low in calcium and vitamin D place you at greater risk for osteoporosis. Excess drinking is linked to bone loss and a risk of fractures. Corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat asthma and other conditions, increase your risk of bone loss. Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa or bulimia) can also take a toll on bone health.

Do Men Get Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is much more common in women, but men are at risk, too. In fact, about 25% of men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture. Osteoporosis may be under-diagnosed in men because it is often considered a "woman's disease" and men may not be tested.

Testing - DXA Bone Density Scan:
Your doctor may recommend a bone mineral density test if:
* You're over 50 and have broken a bone
* You are a woman over 65, or a man over 70
* You are in menopause or past menopause and have risk factors
* You are a man age 50-69 with risk factors
DXA (dual X-ray absorptiometry) uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone density in the hip and spine. The test takes less than 15 minutes.

Testing - What Your T-Score Means:
Testing compares your bone mineral density (BMD) with that of a healthy 30-year-old, since that's when bone mass is at its peak. The results come as a T-score in these ranges:
* 1.0 and higher is normal bone density
* Between -1.0  and -2.5 shows low bone density (osteopenia) but not osteoporosis
* -2.5 or below indicates osteoporosis
As your bone density decreases, your T-score gets lower.

Treatment - Bone-Boosting Drugs:
If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, you may be prescribed a biophosphonate: Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax, or Reclast. They can reduce bone loss and fracture risk and may actually help build some bone density. Those taken by mouth can cause gastrointestinal problems such as ulcers in the esophagus, acid reflux, and nausea. Injectable bisphosphonates, given one to four times a year, can cause brief flu-like symptoms. Bisphosphonates may increase risk of jaw bone destruction.

Treatment - Estrogen Agents:
Hormone replacement therapy, once used widely for menopause symptoms, is an option for osteoporosis, but it's used less than other medications because of concerns about the risk of cancer, blood clots, heart disease, and stroke. Evista is not a hormone but can provide similar bone-strengthening effects to estrogen without the cancer risks. Risks include blood clots and increased hot flashes. Forteo, a synthetic parathyroid hormone, requires daily injections and actually builds new bone. Leg cramps and dizziness have been reported with Forteo use.

Treatment - A Biologic Alternative:
Prolia is a lab-produced antibody that slows the breakdown of bone. Given as an injection twice a year, it is for postmenopausal women at high risk for fractures who can't tolerate other osteoporosis drugs or who haven't been helped by other drugs. Side effects include back pain, muscle pain, bone pain, a higher risk of infections, and lower calcium levels.

Bone-Building Foods:
Eating calcium-rich foods can help protect your bones no matter what your age. You need the equivalent of about three and a half 8-ounce glasses of milk a day. Fish such as salmon, tuna, and herring also contain vitamin D, which helps us absorb calcium, and leafy green vegetables also provide magnesium, which helps maintain good bone quality. Some foods and drinks are also fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

Foods That Are Bad to the Bone:
Some foods can sap your body's calcium. Minimize salty foods such as canned soups and processed meats. Most Americans get much more sodium than they need. Caffeine can decrease your body's absorption of calcium, but the effect is minimal unless you drink more than three cups of coffee a day. Heavy alcohol use can also lead to bone loss.

Which Foods Have the Most Calcium?
Drinking a glass of vitamin D-fortified milk is one of the best ways to get your calcium. Other dairy products vary in their calcium content. Yogurt and cheese are better choices than ice cream or frozen yogurt. Fish, such as sardines and salmon, are good sources. Fortified foods, such as cereals and orange juice, can also provide a lot of calcium.

Supplements for Healthy Bones:
Two types of calcium supplements are commonly available: calcium carbonate and calcium citrate, which are equally beneficial. Splitting your dose - taking half in the morning and half later in the day -- improves absorption. Check with a doctor about the upper limit for calcium. Too much can lead to kidney stones. Getting adequate vitamin D aids the absorption of calcium.

Build Strong Bones With Weight:
Weight-bearing exercise can help you build bone and maintain it. That includes walking, jogging, tennis, and other activities where you move the full weight of your body. Using small weights in many different activities helps bones. Women who walk just a mile a day have four to seven more years of bone reserve, researchers have found.

Exercise Caution:
While yoga and Pilates can help with balance, too much twisting or forward-bending can increase the risk of spinal compression fractures in people who have osteoporosis. High-impact activities also can be risky for people with low bone density. Swimming and bicycling can be great exercise, but they are not weight-bearing and won't provide bone-health benefits.

Osteopenia - Borderline Bone Loss:
If you have bone loss but not enough to be osteoporosis, you may have a condition called osteopenia. As with osteoporosis, there are no physical symptoms. Osteopenia can progress to osteoporosis, but with changes in diet and exercise, you can slow the bone loss. Your doctor will evaluate you to see if you need medication.

Can Osteoporosis Be Reversed?
Most medications for osteoporosis reduce bone loss or slightly increase bone density. Forteo helps build new bone, but requires daily injections and can only be used for two years because of potential side effects. But there's a glimmer of hope for a cure for osteoporosis. New research in animals indicates that an experimental drug that blocks serotonin from being synthesized in the gut could actually build new bone and reverse bone loss.

Build Bones in Your Youth:
Healthy habits as a child or teenager can pay off years later with stronger bones. Young people can build their bones by eating calcium-rich foods, getting enough vitamin D (through sunshine or diet), and exercising regularly. Here are the recommended daily intakes for calcium by age:
- Under 1 year: 200-260 mg
- 1-3 years: 700 mg
- 4-8 years: 1,000 mg
- 9-18 years: 1,300 mg
- 19-50 years : 1,000 mg
- 51-70 men: 1,000 mg
- 51+ women: 1,200 mg
- 71+ years: 1,200 mg
By age 30, the average woman has built 98% of her peak bone mass.

Preventing Falls - The Basics:
Avoiding fractures is also key to keeping your bones healthy, whether you have bone loss or not. To prevent a fall that could cause a fracture, minimize clutter and be sure that your area rugs are anchored to the floor. Eliminate throw rugs and loose cords. Wearing sturdy, rubber-soled shoes also can reduce the risk of falling.

It's Never Too Late for Bone Health:
Many people don't find out about their bone loss until they are in their 60s or older. But you can still benefit from boosting a low calcium intake to recommended levels and exercising regularly. Exercises such as tai chi improve balance, which can help prevent falls.

Living With Osteoporosis:
Osteoporosis doesn't have to interfere with your life. In fact, being inactive or immobile will worsen bone health. So get out and walk, and enjoy leisure activities. Ask for help carrying heavy grocery bags or other items, and use railings or a cane or walker if you need stability.___

"The patient had been wearing the Google Glass device each day for up to 18 hours for two months prior to admission, removing the device during sleep and bathing," the paper says.
"He noted that when he dreamed during his residential treatment, he envisioned the dream through the device. He would experience the dream through a small grey window, which was consistent with what he saw when wearing the device while awake."
The serviceman developed a dependence on the device, and without it "he was less confident and exhibited significant craving similar to patients desiring their substance of abuse," the study said.

A recent survey of 1,300 young adults, conducted by 'Digital Clarity', found that 16% of the 18- to 25-year-olds displayed symptoms of net addiction.
Almost all of this 16% admitted to spending over 15 hours a day online.
Experts remain divided over how real a condition internet addiction is.

Increasingly new evidence has led scientists to determine that Earth’s magnetic field intensity is dropping by a rate of 10 times as fast that it normally would.
Scientists believe that magnetic field reversals are driven by changes in the Earth’s iron core.
To make their findings, the scientists writing in the November issue of Geophysical Journal International took measurements of the magnetic field alignment in layers of ancient Italian lake sediments that are now exposed.
Researchers expressed concern that if a reversal in the magnetic field does occur, we could experience all sorts of calamity. It could cause our electrical grid to shut down.
And, since the magnetic field helps shield Earth’s life forms from the dangers of powerful streams of solar particles and cosmic rays, any temporary loss or weakening of the field that usually takes place before it permanently reverses polarity could pose a serious danger to our health.
The danger to life could even be greater if the magnetic field goes through long periods of instability before the flip, said the researchers.

He said there should be no discrimination, selectivity or exceptionalism in the context of arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament.

Pakistan called for measures to:
a. Address security concerns of states.
b. Carry forward strategic and conventional weapons limitation and reductions. Unilateral and bilateral measures undertaken by some are partial, insufficient and cannot substitute implementation of multilateral disarmament obligations.
c. Strengthen the international non-proliferation regime through policies that are equitable, criteria-based and non-discriminatory. There should be no exceptionalism or preferential treatment driven by motivations of power and profit.
d. There should be an end to horizontal and vertical proliferation of nuclear weapons. Extending nuclear deterrence to alliance partners amounts itself to horizontal proliferation.
e. Negative security assurances should be extended to non-nuclear weapons states. These assurances are cost free and do not undermine security of Nuclear Weapons States.
f. Instead of half measures, disowning obligations to disarm and by advocating a treaty banning only the future production of fissile material – which is not even a non-proliferation measure – there should be a reduction of existing fissile material stocks as well, which will be a genuine step towards elimination of nuclear weapons.
g. Along with these steps the international community should immediately start negotiations on a Convention for the elimination of nuclear weapons within a specified time frame. ___

HOW MANY YEARS ARE YOUR BAD HABITS SHAVING OFF YOUR LIFE ?
Terrifying graphic reveals how one cigarette cuts 14 minutes, while an alcoholic drink could cost almost 7 hours

You might think that just one cigarette or a single drink 'can't hurt'. But it could in fact !!!

* Smoking a pack of 20 cigarettes a day cuts ten years off a person's life
* Drinking two or more alcoholic drinks every day cuts 23 years off a life
* Cocaine addicts lose up to 34 years, with each dose costing 5.6 hours
* Methadone users cut their lives by 38 years, and die at an average age of 41
* A heroin addiction will cut 42 years off a person's life, killing them at age 38
* Lifetime methamphetamine users lose 42 years, each dose costing 11 hours

Body-snatched zombie ladybugs! It’s not science fiction, but a real invasion of parasitic organisms.

Ladybugs are said to bring good luck—but one infected by the wasp species Dinocampus coccinellae is decidedly unfortunate. When a female wasp stings a ladybug, it leaves behind a single egg. After the egg hatches, the larva begins to eat its host from the inside out. When ready, the parasite emerges and spins a cocoon between the ladybug’s legs. Though its body is now free of the tormentor, the bug remains enslaved, standing over the cocoon and protecting it from potential predators. Some lucky ladybugs actually survive this eerie ordeal.

A 'High Bred' Collar
The Jacobin pigeon is one of approximately 350 breeds of domesticated pigeon around the world. Most such breeds descend from the wild rock pigeon (Columba livia).
Pigeon fanciers have created different breeds to suit a variety of desires over hundreds of years. The birds range from homing pigeons that can stay aloft for more than 20 hours to acrobatic breeds that tumble in mid-flight and fancy show pigeons like the Jacobin, with outrageous feather features and colors.

QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON GREEK TOMB
Newly revealed mosaic may hold key to unlocking mystery: Who was buried in the massive mound?

Greek archaeologists have discovered the image of a young, red-haired goddess being swept off to the underworld inside a 2,300-year-old tomb near the ancient site of Amphipolis in northern Greece.

Identified as Persephone, daughter of Zeus, the goddess portrayed on a mosaic floor provides a key new clue to what in recent months has become a much publicized mystery: Who was laid to rest in the immense, marble-walled tomb 61 miles (99 kilometers) northeast of the Greek city of Thessaloniki?
Monumental in scale and Macedonian in style, the Amphipolis tomb (also known as the Kasta tumulus) lies close to the Aegean port that Alexander the Great used for his fleet. Archaeologists have dated the tomb to the last quarter of the fourth century B.C., likely placing its construction in the fractious period following Alexander's death in 323 B.C. All this has fueled intense speculation that the tomb was built for someone close to Alexander, but clear evidence has been lacking.
Greece's Ministry of Culture and Sport announced at a news conference on Thursday that the newly discovered image of Persephone closely resembles one in a painting from the royal cemetery of Vergina, where Alexander the Great's father was buried. This discovery, noted Lena Mendoni, general secretary of the Ministry, links the Amphipolis tomb to the royal lineage of Alexander the Great. "The political symbolism is very strong," Mendoni said.
The new find is raising hope that the tomb will add another chapter to the tumultuous history of the ancient Macedonian royal house. "Without doubt," said archaeologist Katerina Peristeri, principal investigator of the Amphipolis tomb, "the deceased was extremely important."
Carried Off to the Land of the Dead
Peristeri and her colleagues discovered the Persephone mosaic as they cleared the floor of one of the tomb's inner chambers. Extending over some 145 square feet, the finely executed artwork depicts the Greek myth of the abduction of Persephone. According to the ancient story, Hades, the god of the underworld, spied Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and the harvest goddess, working in a field, and decided to make her his wife. So he captured her and took her to the underworld, where she became his queen.
The mosaic portrays Hades as a bearded charioteer carrying off the curly-haired Persephone, who looks back wistfully toward her home. Running in front of the chariot is a third figure, the messenger god Hermes, who wears a scarlet cloak and hat and a pair of winged sandals as he leads the way to the underworld.
Peristeri was unwilling to speculate on the identity of the tomb's owner based on this new evidence. But Ian Worthington, a classical scholar at the University of Missouri in Columbia, thinks the excavators could be looking at "a female occupant of the tomb, because the mosaic shows a female being led to the underworld." If this proves to be the case, Worthington added, the tomb might hold the remains of Roxane, Alexander the Great's wife, or Olympias, his mother. Both women were put to death by one of Alexander's generals, Cassander, as he secured the throne of ancient Macedonia.
Surviving classical texts record that Cassander put Roxane and her young son to death at Amphipolis in 310 B.C., so it's very possible, said Worthington, that she could lie in the Amphipolis tomb.
But other evidence points strongly toward Olympias. Alexander intended to make his mother a goddess, like the female deity in Hades' chariot. Moreover, Olympias continued to hold considerable political power even after Alexander's death. Although she was murdered by Cassander and his allies, "I think she still could have been honored by such a tomb," said Philip Freeman, a professor of classics at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
Only time, and further excavation, will tell.

Photos:
The newly excavated Amphipolis tomb mosaic, seen here, depicts the figure of a woman identified as the goddess Persephone, queen of the underworld.
The woman featured in the mosaic is shown with fiery red hair and dressed in a white robe. Archaeologists believe the mosaic shows the abduction of Persephone by Pluto.
