OK, this post has been a long time coming. I was around for the death of FriendFeed. I remember the posts over and over that the community was still thriving up until the point where it was clearly toast. I stuck with Buzz until it was beyond a graveyard. I hate to say it, but the Google+ we all knew and loved for years is dead.

I was around at the start of Google+. In fact, I was in the day before the general public was on thanks to the invite of a generous Googler. That Googler is unfortunately no longer active on G+, like many others I remember from that time.

The death of a community is slow. We don't "quit" a site, but we quit posting and visiting as often as we did. We forget to re-install the app or add the bookmark back to the browser on a new device. It starts at the fringes with people who didn't get much interaction. They eventually see fewer and fewer... more »

OK, this post has been a long time coming. I was around for the death of FriendFeed. I remember the posts over and over that the community was still thriving up until the point where it was clearly toast. I stuck with Buzz until it was beyond a graveyard.

They eventually see fewer and fewer conversations and +1s on their posts and just leave. That means fewer and fewer interactions for those who saw more at the beginning and so on, up the chain. Eventually it hits everyone.

I was really pumped about G+ at the start. I've invested a ton of time here posting, working on my +Replies and More extension and interacting with people. I worked on implementing "Share to G+" in the apps that I was building, even though there wasn't enough demand to justify it. I think it was the best community and is still pretty damned good, but you can't deny that people we'd see regularly in years past are just gone.

The re-focus on communities and collections is going to keep some of the embers going -- maybe even for a few years. Those islands won't equal growth, though, and eventually they'll migrate somewhere else or just peter out. Without the core "social" part of the network there isn't any fuel to power the growth of the rest of the product.

I look forward to Google's next attempt at social. I think they came close on G+ to breaking out of the box, but it just didn't happen this time. I'm not leaving, but you might have noticed that I'm posting less here than I used to. I'll be around at least a little bit until they turn the lights out, which is inevitably what will happen here.

In the meantime, I'll see you around here from time to time and on the other big networks. I hope that someone somewhere builds something better than Twitter and Facebook and manages to win people away from them.

I think I've figured out what I dislike about G+ collections: they aren't "light weight". A "light weight" collection should be trivial to create -- I should be able to create a new collection when I am writing a post by just naming it.

A collection really should be a souped-up hashtag, not a big "thing". Communities can be heavy-weight things with lots of options, but there's just not enough reward to justify organizing stuff in collections given the current number of steps to create and manage them.
