Why +Amira Elgan likes the iPad Pro

She's a leftie. And when she writes or draws anything using ink, it's hard to not smear the ink because she's writing from left to write, but her hand is to the left of where she's writing. On a pen-based system like the iPad Pro, which can ignore all touch input other than the pen, she can rest her hand on the tablet while she writes.

The Grammys are next week. And this year they've made a modification to the trophy. It's called the "Grammycam." A tiny video camera that will be streaming live from the award itself.

Cuba can't afford pesticides, so their bees are healthy and honey organic.

Honey has become one of Cuba's top exports, and foodies all over the world are clamoring to get some.

Why? Because Cuba is so poor that the nation has been unable to afford pesticides since the early 1990s.

All the honey in Cuba is therefore organic.

And there's no colony collapse disorder, which is hammering the bee industry all over the world.

Because Cuba is an authoritarian communist country, all bee farmers must sell to the government based on the price they set. Then the Cuban government sells the honey abroad.

The government buys at a price that's linked to the global market prices. But then they sell at a premium because Cuban honey is superior in quality.

This is what everybody misses about invisible payments

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/YFqn5H )

Everybody's talking about invisible payments. But there's more to this particular form of "friction-free capitalism" than meets, or doesn't meet, the eye.

Here's what makes invisible payments really work:

My prediction was right! The Super Bowl destroyed the previous stadium data record!

I predicted in my eWeek column last week that Super Bowl 50 would more than double the previous record for fan use of data at a sports event.

http://www.eweek.com/mobile/super-bowl-50-sure-to-crush-data-use-records-at-levis-stadium.html

The previous record was set at last year's super bowl -- 6.2 terabytes. I predicted that this year it would exceed 15 terabytes.

As +Chris Preimesberger demonstrates in this column, it did in fact blow past the 15 terabyte mark.

http://www.eweek.com/mobile/no-surprise-super-bowl-50-obliterates-data-usage-records.html

Chris also has a lot of other interesting data information from the game.

Is Google+ being taken over by spam?

I sometimes feel like I spend one-third of my time on Google+ blocking spammers, and another third un-blocking the people in comments Google has falsely flagged as spammers.

I'd like to spend a lot less time doing both these things. What's the solution?

"Ghosts" aren't the real issue at Google+. Zombies are.

I don't know what the answer is here, or if there even is an easy answer, but man -- the G+ spam/random-gibberish comment problem is getting seriously out of control. Seeing my posts taken over by this crap and then going on a massive block-and-report rampage has become a consistent morning ritual for me (with ongoing smaller block-and-report runs continuing all throughout the day).

I hope someone can figure out a solution to this -- and fast. Most people aren't going to be so patient and persistent about actively dealing with this kind of thing, and seeing this level of nonsense and noise really makes G+ look like a cesspool.

Given how much genuinely fantastic sharing and discussion actually goes on here, I hate to imagine folks peeking in and then turning right back around because of the small but all-too-present minority of virtual graffiti vandals. One way or another, something's gotta give.___Is Google+ being taken over by spam?

A short reminder:
As a lot of you probably know, CircleCount is developed by just a few people on a voluntary basis so far. Since the cost for running the site is steadily increasing and our ad revenue is decreasing we need another revenue stream.

We calculated that we need 100 paying customers in order to keep the service running for a long time to come. With your money we will be able to pay the server costs and be able to keep developing new CircleCount services. So please spread the word.

Thank you very much for your support and the trust in us!___I'm being made an example of! Nice!

This is why Amazon will open physical bookstores

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/52I5GR )

Opening physical bookstores is the best idea Amazon has had since the creation of Amazon Prime.

But wait, you say! Wasn't the report that Amazon is even planning a store retracted? And wasn't Amazon created as an efficient alternative to brick-and-mortar stores? Aren't all the bookstores going out of business partly because of Amazon?

Confusion on all this abounds. Here's what you need to know about Amazon's brilliant plan to launch a chain of physical bookstores:

New fighter jet with no tail will probably be unveiled in a Super Bowl commercial tomorrow

It's a 30-second commercial hawking Northrop Grumman as a defense contractor. The plane in question is a concept, and should evolve over the years into a stealth fighter that shoots "lasers."

Two completely different approaches to information overload

Thank you, +Allen Firstenberg!

INFO OVER LOAD are Four Letter Words

The Note to Self podcast on +WNYC Public Radio ran a special this week called #InfoMagical. I found it anything but "magic".

It tried to provide some solutions to Information Overload, and while it had some reasonable ideas, I think it did a very poor job in discussing and delivering those ideas. Overall, their approach was almost missing the core of the problem.

On the other hand, +Mike Elgan did a great job at providing some suggestions to handle the same problem. And I think his tools (and some suggestions from a +Google for Work post the other month) were far more on the mark.

But read what I have to say... tell me what you think. What causes your Information Overload and how do you reduce it?

(cc: +WNYC and +Guy Kawasaki)___Two completely different approaches to information overload

Thank you, +Allen Firstenberg!

McDonald's kale salad has more calories, salt, and fat than a Double Big Mac

Only McDonald's could turn kale into junk food.

The kale salad with Asiago Caesar dressing and chicken has 730 calories, 53 grams of fat and 1,400 milligrams of salt.

Feeling information overload? Here's how to cure it!

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/6GJ3NG )

We tend to think information overload is just the natural response to the fact that there is too much information. The unexamined assumption that we must learn all this information is a remnant or cultural habit from the pre-Internet age, from education and from what we were told growing up.

The cure for information overload is to shift our efforts away from the action needed to learn a fact and toward the skill of storing and retrieving information.

The ability to find the answers is not only as good as the ability to have the answers—it's better.

Here's why that's true, and also how to do it:

IBM Watson helps create beer that tastes like "joy and optimism"

A brewery called High Peak Brew Co used IBM's Watson supercomputer system to create a beer that "tastes of joy and optimism." (Don't all tasty beers taste like joy and optimism?)

The customer engagement agency Havas helia partnered with IBM to capture America's "mood" on social media during the New Year's Even party season. (There's a season? Isn't New Year's Eve an eve?)

After deciding that social media was filled with optimism and joy (wait, what social network is that again?), Havas helia then categorized 2,800 existing beer recipes according to various human attributes.

Is a "virtual assistant" a person or a cloud application?

The phrase "virtual assistant" is used to mean two completely different things:

1. A personal assistant who works in a different location, either from home or from a cubicle, call center type office.

2. A cloud application like Siri, Google Now, Cortana, M or Alexa, which is automated or mostly automated.

The fact that we used the same phrase to refer to both is confusing and unclear and has to end.

So what's the solution? Any thoughts?

Why your staff of virtual assistants will need a virtual manager

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/PNhP4T )

The day is coming when some people have so many virtual assistants they will need a virtual manager to direct their "virtual staff." But how many virtual assistants are too many?

The availability and use of digital virtual assistants—software-based artificial intelligence services that do things for you—is about to explode.

Today, we think of the all-purpose assistants like Google Now, Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, Facebook's M and Amazon's Alexa. To some degree, we feel compelled to choose which we'll use.

What startups are doing in ever increasing numbers is launching specialized virtual assistants that function in a more limited way or deal with a narrow category of information.

What startups are doing in ever increasing numbers is launching specialized virtual assistants that function in a more limited way or deal with a narrow category of information.

At the current rate of development, we can expect to see several specialized virtual assistant products or services each for banking, insurance, health care, law enforcement, law and other professions.

In fact, we'll have so many it will be hard to keep track of them all.

Virtual assistants: They're made out of people!

When users first try virtual assistants (like Siri, Google Now, Cortana, M or Alexa), they're struck by the idea that they're talking to a computer, rather than a person.

That much sounds obvious. In reality, however, the responses from virtual assistants are far more human than most people assume. In fact, every response is carefully crafted by a person or a team of people.

In the U.S., there are eight full-time writers chugging away every day on choosing what Cortana will say. These writers are novelists, screenwriters, playwrights and essayists. They start each morning with a meeting that lasts an hour or so. In that meeting, they pore over information about what people are asking or saying to Cortana, looking for problems that can be solved with better replies.

In that meeting, they pore over information about what people are asking or saying to Cortana, looking for problems that can be solved with better replies.

In fact, the writing done for Cortana (and Siri, Alexa and other virtual assistants that have personalities) is a lot like novel writing. There's no story or plot, but there is one character, which has a gender, an age, an educational level, a particular sense of humor and more. That human-created character or personality has to remain consistent across queries and contexts. When the writing staff crafts canned replies, it's essentially dialogue based on the character they've developed.

Cortana even holds what some might consider religious or political views.

And she won't take any crap from you either. Here's why:

Why +Amira Elgan likes the iPad Pro

She's a leftie. And when she writes or draws anything using ink, it's hard to not smear the ink because she's writing from left to write, but her hand is to the left of where she's writing. On a pen-based system like the iPad Pro, which can ignore all touch input other than the pen, she can rest her hand on the tablet while she writes.

My latest podcast: "Photographic Memory Machine"

Lifelogging? You’re soaking in it!

All our Facebook oversharing (all those selfies and food photos and vacation snapshots and status updates) collectively form a kind of lifelog.

A lifelogging camera takes that behavior – that accidental lifelogging we’re already doing – and makes it more competent, more complete, and more honest.

Social media posts tend to be theater. We share our lives not as they are, but as we want others to believe they are. Or, we share only the events we believe are important enough. The result is that everybody’s posts skew fabulous or wonderful, even as our lives are inevitably filled with the mundane or negative moments we never share.

I’ve been fascinated by Narrative and their tiny camera ever since they launched in 2012. And it was great speaking with Narrative co-founder Oskar Kalmaru about why they got into this business in the first place, and how they think about everything you can do with their product.

Amazon has taken down costumes for kids from its German and Italian sites.

The costumes depict 1940s-era WWII refugees, not modern ones.

Are these costumes offensive? Or are they acceptable historical fancy dress?

The road to Camembert - going into the "cheese cave"

My "cheese cave" is a small wine fridge set at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In about two months this should magically transform into Camembert.

Apple's employee #4 told us never-before revealed details about Steve Jobs

+Leo Laporte and I interviewed Bill Fernandez today on TWiT's Triangulation: https://goo.gl/bCFSgD

Bill introduced Steve Wozniak to Steve Jobs, grew up with both of them and worked on the Apple I, Apple II and the Macintosh.

Steve Jobs was his best friend.

You'll hear things about Steve Jobs in this interview that have never appeared in any book, article or movie.

Don't miss this one: https://goo.gl/bCFSgD

Google Play Games no longer requires Google+

In "the coming months," Google will allow Google Play Games users to use an ID that's just for Google Play Games and not associated with Google+.

Best of all, players will be able to sign in once per account, rather than each time they play a game.

Photographic memory made easy

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/CFCfVr )

Lifelogging is fricken awesome.

The purpose of lifelogging with photos is, quite literally, to use technology to give ourselves a photographic memory. The pictures are prosthetic memory. We're outsourcing part of the job of remembering to cameras and computer storage devices. We're massively upgrading our capacity to remember our own lives and experiences and correcting for the human flaw of false memory.

Naysayers have worried that the privacy of the people captured by lifelogging cameras may be violated. But I believe we each have the right to remember our own experiences.

Lifelogging used to be an obscure hobby or research project by MIT geeks. But while nobody was paying attention, lifelogging has become something of a banality.

It's a common practice -- either you or people you know are doing it every day. But you're doing it wrong.

Here's how to do it right. (And it's super easy, too!)

The road to Camembert - salting the cheese

After draining and forming these cheeses for 24 hours, I salted them. The salt will draw out more moisture over the next 24 hours.

Yes well, making naturally fermented bread, cheese and olives might not be "street" ... but that's how I roll, motherfucker.

I've done a lot of fermentation stuff today. All I need now is to make beer and/or wine and I'll have the foundations of Western Civilization.

Apologies to +The New Yorker cartoon I paraphrased.
