Chris Mallory17,861Just 150 PeopleBecause it's saturday, here's a random circle share that consists of most of my favorite people on G+. In here are people of all sorts: people whom I personally enjoy engaging with, people whose content I believe to be interesting, people whom I can call friends, and people that don't know that I exist but make interesting posts anyway. It is certain that I've probably accidentally excluded some people - if so, my apologies! I've also purposefully excluded a handful of people such as real life friends, as well as +Miss M since she doesn't like being in my circles. Thanks for being cool, guys :)2012-12-08 22:45:1915029017CC G+
Michael Earley9,005We added a few more sweet souls yesterday and saw some colorful, delicious foods from all around the world. Please join us next week and add these sugar coated people to your circles. Thanks to everyone for sharing.2012-04-02 06:46:22100121216CC G+

Michael Earley8,445+Sumit Sen recently made a great post referencing the fact that pretty much everyone only have about 100 true followers irregardless of the number that is next to their name. True followers that is. Well if that being the case, you can keep 5 of your old followers and dump the rest and add this circle and be done with it. You will have the best time, see some awesome images from all over the world, you get get your entire google plus experience in one day and have six more days to shoot without having to check in. Well now your dilemma is solved. Less time, more quality time on the computer and more time to shoot. Oh by the way.. this circle is a bunch of the sweetest folks on google+ #SweetsSunday Take a look at the thread and you will know what I mean.2012-03-19 15:25:2995561117CC G+
Michael Earley8,048This week we only grew in numbers by a few, but the amount of comments grew by more than a hundred. We were teased by wonderful images of fantastic sweetness, we had sisters teased and we teased each other. I think this is one of the most active conversation themes I have seen. It is a nice way to pass your sunday with a group of freinds that is getting more fun each week. And oh yea.... we have good looking food as well... mostly sweets at #sweetssunday please join us and please download and share the circle.2012-03-12 08:17:3385634CC G+
Michael Earley6,784Added a few more hearty souls to this self rising circle. If you have posted in #sweetssunday and I missed you let me know. If you would like to be included in this fun circle, just pick out a cool shot of something sweet and have it ready to share next Sunday. The cool thing about this circle and theme is that for the most part, it is not just post and run, but a fun way to poke your nose in through out the day and have a few laughs on Sundays. Please check out the tread from yesterday and see some of the wonderful images shared this week. Please share this so we can continue to grow.2012-02-27 10:33:05727814CC G+

I always love these. I especially love this one though because it was made with video clips instead of photos and the girl's personality really shines through. So cute. It almost made me cry. I can only hope to have children of my own someday so I can do something like this. :)

"On April 13, Frazier Glenn Miller opened fire outside of a Jewish Community Center in Kansas City, killing 3. The word terrorism hasn’t been used and the term ‘hate crime’ has been tentatively applied. Would it have been different if the attack involved bombs that he learned to make in an online magazine? What about if he shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ rather than ‘Heil Hitler?'"

I like this. I can't stand it when parents make their small children do things that they obviously aren't comfortable with. I always want to say something, but I figure it's not my place.

I just know that whenever someone tries to make a child give me a hug or kiss and it's clear that they don't want to, I always say, "It's all right; s/he doesn't want to," and that's usually the end of it.

Yep...I like this. Whenever I come upon a skirt or dress that happens to have pockets, I buy it (so long as it's in my price range and fits well). Also, I now realize my love and need for cargo pants. I had a couple pairs when I was a kid. They were great for collecting rocks.

So, I learned about waterbears today (otherwise known as [more formally] tardigrades or [my favorite] moss piglets). They live in water and have four sets of legs. Basically, THEY ARE REALLY COOL. They can survive (and actually live comfortably) in conditions that most organisms on Earth cannot, which classifies them as extremophiles. There are over 1,000 species and they all reproduce a little differently. Even though you can find males and females in most species, some reproduce asexually. And all species are oviparous (meaning they lay eggs). Most commonly, the eggs are fertilized externally.

According to a short snippet on Tumblr, "Waterbears can go without food or water for more than a decade. They can survive temperatures from zero to above the boiling point of water, pressure six times stronger than the deepest ocean trench, radiation hundreds of times higher than the fatal... more »

Ugh. I really hate the new +Google search page design. I can't really even put my finger on what's changed. It just looks awful and I feel like I can't see as much content. The text looks huge. And did they change the line height/spacing? WHY?! I HATE SCROLLING. I realize I can just zoom out to 90% and it looks a lot better, but I don't want to have to do that. Whatever! Also, I didn't realize it really bothered me so much until I started writing. Oh well. Guess I'll get used to it! And by "I'll get used to it," I mean I'm gonna be Ctrl + [minus]-ing forever.

My god. I don't think I've ever been so close to magic.
I suppose Dessa is a rapper, but she doesn't rap in all of her songs. I think I'd more comfortably label her a 'lyricist', though I honestly don't believe there is one word for what she does. And I really couldn't settle on which song to share, so I chose one that had a video.

Here's "Alibi" from Dessa's album A Badly Broken Code (2010). Man, I'd love to see her live. I hope she keeps creating.

I enjoyed reading this chat very much. Her is one of the best films I have seen in a very long time (years). And for so many reasons. I think that upon watching the film, the viewer will either "get it" or not... It is difficult for me to put into words why this movie made me feel so much. But...I thought it was beautiful. Every now and then, a scene from the movie will just kind of flicker in my memory and it always makes me smile. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see Her in theaters.

Dance of the Peacock Spider

Doing the Y: Only 4 mm in size, the Australian male peacock spider (Maratus volans) puts on an impressive courtship display, rivaling the Village People in Peacock Spider Dances to YMCA . Described by researchers as multi-modal, the dance includes 3rd leg waves, synchronized unfurling of colorful belly flaps, abdominal bobbing and pedipalp flickers. As if these visual displays were not enough, the spider generates bursts of ultrasonic vibrations carried through the ground to signal his passion for his lady love.

Darwin's Dilemma: Is there an selective advantage to such complexity? How did it evolve? As the rituals get more elaborate, there may be diminishing returns given the limitations of biological cost and sensory perception. Translation: is it a waste of time? :) But studies show that redundant signalsallo... more »

“For the series 'Alone Time,' Levine recreated and photographed typical domestic environments that play with gender stereotypes. As a twist, he used only one model to play both the male and female characters in the image. The result, Levine said, 'challenges the normative idea that gender presentation is stable or constant. Rather, gender expression can be fluid and multiple.'”

For the past several days, I have been on a mission–to clean up and organize my computer's many folders and files and clear up as much space as possible. So far, I've deleted 1000+ songs and moved nearly 7,000 photos to Flickr. And in doing so, I have freed up 90 GB! :D

I came upon this incredibly interesting post today (in link) in which the author has shared select photos of artwork and descriptions from Anthropometamorphosis: Man Transform’d, or The Artificial Changeling, what is believed to be one of the earliest comparative social commentaries on body modification.

The 17th century book, written by John Bulwer (b.1606; d. 1656), is a nearly 600-page exploration of every kind of body modification imaginable, from piercings and tattoos to eyebrow alteration and makeup application.

I so wish I could learn more about this book, but it is very rare and information is scarce. I did find some additional photos of the book's artwork: http://bit.ly/19QO7nZ

#Anthrolit Recommendation/Reflection: "Shakespeare in the Bush"

I stumbled upon this essay today and after doing the tiniest bit of research, I was surprised that I had not heard of it before. "Shakespeare in the Bush" by Laura Bohannan (found here: http://bit.ly/1htvSrw) is apparently a very popular and well-known essay that is used in many high schools and colleges. And it relates very well to the post I shared yesterday (how language shapes worldviews).

The author and narrator, Bohannan, tells her experience of visiting the Tiv (an ethnic group and nation) in West Africa. Before her journey begins, a friend gives her a copy of Shakespeare's Hamlet in hopes that she will study (and come to the correct interpretation of) the famous tragedy while she is in the bush (rural, undeveloped land) in Africa.

Bohannan describes her... more »

The most thought-provoking piece of prose poetry I've read in awhile...

Who taught me to suck in my stomach,

or my cheeks?

Who told me to stand with my legs apart

and my hips thrust back

to create the illusion of a gap

between my thighs?

Who made me believe that the most beautiful part of me

is my negative space?

HA. This is awesome. Not sure why people don't seem to get that there is a huge difference between looking and gawking at another person. Simply looking at or acknowledging someone else is completely innocent and generally unavoidable. Gawking is incredibly intrusive, makes most gawkees feel very uncomfortable, and is completely avoidable (with the exception of places/situations where one is "supposed" to gawk [e. g. strip clubs]).
