Mia Voss26,814This week on +The Mia Connect Power Chat, we are going to completely mix it up and talk with Animal Sanctuaries & Rescue Organizations around the country.  +The Wild Animal Sanctuary (right here in Colorado) will join us to talk about their amazing facility and the efforts they are making to care for exotic animals that have been rescued from deplorable situations or were abandoned: TWAS has been rescuing exotic wildlife and endangered species since 1980, and is currently home to more than 290 Lions, Tigers, Bears, Jaguars, Leopards, Mountain Lions, Lynx, Bobcats, Servals, Wolves, and other wildlife. These animals were abandoned, abused, illegally kept, or came from other terrible situations. The vast majority of the animals were so-called “pets” - and were confiscated by law enforcement officials - usually within the first six months of their lives. The sanctuary also provides a permanent refuge to surplus animals from zoos and other wildlife facilities, where they face euthanasia due to over-breedingFounder #KathyNobles  of #GoingHomeAnimalRescue :Going Home partners with small municipal shelters and rescue groups, mainly in rural areas that do not have the resources or adoption pools metropolitan areas do, and transport dogs and some cats to receiving rescues in areas of the country where there is a need for adoptable companion animals. Presently we are partners with about 30 shelters and rescues throughout Oklahoma and the northwestern part of Arkansas. In addition, Going Home arranges 4 to 5 major transports a month to receiving rescues in Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesotahttp://bit.ly/GHART+Leila Martin from +Jim Burwell's Petiquette will also join the panel! Charles Lupica66,743          Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: J to ZThis  is the second of two circles,  The first was shaerd on 16 May here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103236949470535942612/posts/FPsHj9E2QEo.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers and shared at different times to help keep down the stream saturation. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of  +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Katy Houlne and +Margaret Tompkins   They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount. I would to thank each for their help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script was provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result.   Keyword world a personal viewpointIf you don't use the word photographer to describe yourself how do you expect people to find you in a search. "Searcher of cute pixels", "Creative spirit that makes art out of light"; these might be poetic, they might touch your soul but the world looks for content based on keyword searches.  SEO is going to do the same. Consider carefully the words sou use to describe yourself if you want people to find you using search technology. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities o2013-05-18 13:17:2050114186132CC G+

Maki Silberberg0FOOD PHOTOGRAPHERS CIRCLE!A little while ago +Isabelle Fortin asked the G+ World if anyone knew of any food photographers she could circle.  Any mention of "Food" and "photography" in one sentence gets my attention so I decided to help her out with what she started.  Lo and behold, 270 people later, we have a circle.  And I have lots of new friends :DSpecial thanks to +Mary Helen Leonard and +Gabriel Bucataru who both had significant food photography circles in progress and shared it with usIf you're interested in food and/or photography, this is the circle to add!  If you're hungry, make sure to go get something to eat before checking out these people's delicious photographs ;)  You've been warned! 2012-11-30 20:41:1827018512CC G+

What a beautiful orchid. :-)

Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis)

One of the most popular orchids in trade, the moth orchid’s scientific name is probably a reference to the genus Phalaena, which was given to a large group of moths. And it’s not difficult to see why it got its name – some of the species closely resemble moths in flight.

I love +Randy Hume's beautiful sunflower shot. Full of Flower Power! :-)

Sunflowers   On a beautiful day
To grow best, sunflowers need full sun. They grow best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with heavy mulch. In commercial planting, seeds are planted 45 cm (1.5 ft.) apart and 2.5 cm (1 in) deep. Sunflower "whole seed" (fruit) are sold as a snack food, raw or after roasting in ovens, with or without salt and/or seasonings added. Sunflowers can be processed into a peanut butter alternative, sunflower butter. In Germany, it is mixed with rye flour to make Sonnenblumenkernbrot (literally: sunflower whole seed bread), which is quite popular in German-speaking Europe. It is also sold as food for birds and can be used directly in cooking and salads. American Indians had multiple uses for sunflowers in the past, such as in bread, medical ointments, dyes and body paints.

Sunflower oil, extracted from the seeds, is used for cooking, as a carrier oil and to produce margarine and biodiesel, as it is cheaper than olive oil. A range of sunflower varieties exist with differing fatty acid compositions; some 'high oleic' types contain a higher level of monounsaturated fats in their oil than even olive oil.

The cake remaining after the seeds have been processed for oil is used as a livestock feed. Some recently developed cultivars have drooping heads. These cultivars are less attractive to gardeners growing the flowers as ornamental plants, but appeal to farmers, because they reduce bird damage and losses from some plant diseases. Sunflowers also produce latex, and are the subject of experiments to improve their suitability as an alternative crop for producing nonallergenic rubber.

Traditionally, several Native American groups planted sunflowers on the north edges of their gardens as a "fourth sister" to the better known three sisters combination of corn, beans, and squash.Annual species are often planted for their allelopathic properties.

However, for commercial farmers growing commodity crops, the sunflower, like any other unwanted plant, is often considered a weed. Especially in the Midwestern US, wild (perennial) species are often found in corn and soybean fields and can have a negative impact on yields.

Sunflowers can be used in phytoremediation to extract toxic ingredients from soil, such as lead, arsenic and uranium, and used in rhizofiltration to neutralize radionuclides and other toxic ingredients and harmful bacteria from water. They were used to remove caesium-137 and strontium-90 from a nearby pond after the Chernobyl disaster, and a similar campaign was mounted in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

Come and Meet Our Panel...

+Shawna Coronado  - A full-time writer and photographer, an on-camera spokesperson, professional speaker, and green lifestyle evangelist. Her goal is to promote a better way of living which inspires and encourages a healthier lifestyle. It includes green lifestyle living, eco-travel, organic home gardening, and fresh culinary ideas to help make a difference in community. She now spends her days learning about sustainable ideas and trying to inspire others to find their socially good selves. Sometimes she gets to make television appearances and speak at cool gigs like at TEDxWomen and Google discussing the benefits of green living for community. Find Shawna at www.shawnacoronado.com

+Kristin Canty  - Director/Producer of Farmageddon; The Unseen War on American Family Farms.  She is a first-time film maker, small farm advocate, fresh milk drinker and a mom.  One of her children was ridden with multiple allergies and asthma as a pre-schooler, and when medications couldn’t help him, she found that raw milk helped him recover.  Since then, she has tried to buy most of her family’s food directly from local, organic farms. When Kristin learned that farmers and co-ops all over the country were increasingly getting raided by the government, she set out to  make a film about it. She hopes that when people see it, it can change the tide of public pressure so that our government stops harassing and adding costly burdens to our small, organic farmers. Kristin lives in Concord, Massachusetts with her husband, four children, two dogs , two cats and 11 chickens.

+Wayne Meador  - Wayne Meador is a visionary and entrepreneur. He’s the creator of AWorld4ChangeTV, and on a mission to make a difference and change the world around him. Before AWorld4ChangeTV, he was working as a small business sales consultant, has been to nursing school, worked as an EMT, a volunteer firefighter, supervised heavy equipment crews at jobsites, been a sheep farmer, and restored his first car by the time he was 16. He’s a dedicated, single father on a mission to build a better world, by helping each one of us learn how to become more sustainable and self-reliant in our daily lives.

When he’s not glued to the computer screen and sharing his mission, he enjoys building food security through gardening, aquaponics, and hydroponics. On any given day, you’ll find him experimenting with different growing techniques or building his next time and labor saving contraption. As a part of his “change the world” movement, he designed the Seed Savers and Pay-it-Forward communities on Google Plus and is actively addressing these topics through many different forums.. His personal desire to make healthy food and clean water available to the developing world, has driven him to push forward with his mission, to build a build a better home for generations to come

+Stephanie Beitzel - In entrepreneurial circles, I'm known as "The Niche Navigator". This  means I help PURPOSE-DRIVEN people discover their IDEAL Niche, so they can make a difference in the world through their own Niche business.

How does Niche Business fit in with Sustainability? As Richard Branson says: "If everyone can find their Niche in the world, where they can make a difference, I believe we can solve the world's problems." So although I help people work work out their purpose, and fulfil it through Niche business, what I am REALLY doing is help ordinary people solve the world's problems through their own profitable businesses. In my view, this is the definition of Sustainability. And it's a double win when their Purpose itself is also about saving the planet.

I believe everyone has one TRUE purpose in life. Whether it's empowering young people, being a speaker of truth, saving the planet, or any other single cause, few people spend their lives looking for their purpose, while the rest spend their lives ignoring it, or being freaked out by it. But for those ready to step up and make a difference, being a purpose-driven Nichepreneur is the best way to achieve this.

So, if a client rocks up to me, and we discover their Purpose is to create a sustainable world, be part of the solution, not the problem - then we get cracking looking at how they can turn this into a sustainable business, be a leader.

When I'm not navigating Niches, I am passionate about ecology and sustainability... and am convinced this can be done on a budget - because I do it every single day. From recycling, to avoiding dodgy foods, and minimising fuel consumption, I do my best to do my bit. And lead others to do the same in my house and circle. Can I do more? Of course.... and I'm on the case.... but it's great to be in a position to be a leader in this area, and shrug off the inclination to play small, just do my bit, but leave the leadership to others.  GULP!

So, that's me. And I look forward to being part of the conversation, and being inspired and empowered by the more established sustainability leaders, whilst also doing my bit in my own world, and in the world at large. ___Today is the first Sustainability In the Modern World discussion and I'm the lucky gal that gets to be a part of it. While the garden looks good when you stand at a distance from it, my favorite thing to do is to get right up on the flowers and stand there really quiet-like. Then the butterflies come and do their thing and you're all mesmerized by their wonderfulness and decide right then and there that you're definitely dressing like Mother Nature for Halloween, because that bitch rocks.
