My research assistant, Dipendra, is from Nepal. His family back home, including his older parents with chronic health conditions, and young nieces and nephews, has been devastated by the recent earthquake. His wife's family has fared a bit better, but her sister was seriously injured (her parent's house, however, is still standing). If you have a few bucks to spare, I've set up a youcaring site for donations here: http://bit.ly/1DQ9b6B It would be greatly appreciated.

Recent interview!

+Tara C. Smith is an epidemiologist of epic proportions! She’s an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Iowa, Co-Director at the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, and blogger at ScienceBlogs.com.  She’s also an esteemed member of the Zombie Research Society advisory board! We talk about what epidemiology is, how a person becomes an epidemiologist, and even how to differentiate between media hype and reality. We talk about pandemic viruses, hospital and community spread viruses, and of course how the Zombie Apocalypse fits into this.  A very interesting discussion!

I have my first article up at Slate magazine. Ignore the headline (I don't get to choose that)--topic is really "where do new infectious diseases come from?" http://slate.me/YvOuhR
