This is a great honor, and an even bigger surprise, as my image here received considerably less views than others I have posted. Got to give thanks to +Jarek Klimek I very much appreciate this one!

Inflating the Colors

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

There is just something different about this image when comparing it to my previous post, but I cannot quite figure it out.

OK, seriously; I am so much more excited to work with color.

To get this shot, I had to step inside of the balloon, while it was being inflated. I wanted to get as close as possible to the canvas, so I could capture as much of the design and color detail, as possible.

I recently made the decision to try other RAW software programs, and see if I could improve my workflow and output results. This particular image was processed using a 60-day trial version of Capture One Pro 7.

The image was taken during a hot air ballon festival held at Piedmont Park, in Atlanta, Georgia.

City in Motion B&W
Downtown Seattle

I am intrigued with the concept of processing evening and night time city scenes in B&W. I like the way the bright mono toned lights contrast with the dark areas, especially the building lights.

I am currently experimenting with different RAW software programs, and this was the particular processed version I liked best.

This view of the Seattle Skyline was taken from the dirt road behind Jose Rizal Park, located in Beacon Hill.

St. Mary Falls
Glacier National Park
Montana

This was taken several years ago, around the time I first realized what effect long exposures could have in a waterfall scene. I was still learning technique (obviously), and have to laugh at myself now. For, as you can see; I went a little overboard on the exposure. As I used a polarizer for this image, and set my aperture to f/22, the resulting shutter speed was 8 seconds. A good deal of the water in this image is noticeably hot (over-exposed). As part of my personal shooting style is to produce fairly high contrast impact images, I thought it would be a good time to present this shot.

Rat Island
China Camp State Park
California

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

This is a very rare B&W processed image, for me. I decided to process it this way, because I was not happy with the color version; however I wanted to post it as I liked the composition. I used a long exposure to smooth out the waves. I confess that I have a lot to learn when it comes to B&W; however color is by far my personal preference. Besides, there are many extremely talented B&W photographers to admire, here on Google+.

I will return to this location in the very near future, and attempt to capture a good color version of this scene.

Mt. Banner & Mt. Ritter
Ediza Lake
Ansel Adams Wilderness

A little further into the wilderness than my previous post, and the scenery becomes even more prestine. I began this hike at the Agnew Meadows trailhead, located in Mammoth Lakes. The hike follows the Shadow Lake Drainage up to Shadow Lake. From here, hikers must decide which one of the much sought after destinations to continue to. While both Garnet and 1000 Island Lakes are just as popular, I chose one of my favorite spots in all of the Eastern Sierras. Ediza Lake is 6.5 miles from the trailhead.

The great thing being here on this morning was having the lake all to myself, as I was the only person who got up at sunrise to photograph the stillness. The bad thing was while I was the only human at the edge of the Lake, I was joined by about a million fun-loving hungry mosquitoes who clearly wanted to get toknow... more »

Sierra Wilderness Sunrise
North Peak and Shamrock Lake

Hiking into the 20 Lakes Basin area, was my very first overnight backpacking trip to the Eastern Sierras. This trail is a great way to get into backpacking the Sierras, as it is one of the less difficult hikes, yet leads to many beautiful scenic lakes. Shamrock Lake is about 3.5 miles from the trailhead. The trailhead is located just 2 miles from the entrance of Yosemite National Park, on it's eastern boundary.

NEW: In The Spotlight –– Announcement Post

It's time to show your fellow Google+ photographers some appreciation folks –– and I will provide you with the forum for exactly that; the brand new In The Spotlight circle.

What's the In The Spotlight circle?

It's a circle for my favorite photographers as well as yourself and your favorite people (it could be people you know or people you admire but never interacted with). It's the hottest circle yet here on Google+, a circle you definitely want to be a part of.

Who can participate?

Anybody. As long as the main focus lies on photography. It's neither a pro circle, nor an amateur dito. It's a circle for great and active people loving the art of photography.

How can I be a part of this?

It's verysimple. Jus... more »

Swoosh
Mt. Rainier National Park

Whenever I look at this image, I think of a question that I cannot seem to answer the same way twice in a row...
Am I happier to capture a shot that has taken careful pre-planning, or a scene that presents itself, completely out of the blue?

On this occasion, I was in Mt. Rainier NP, to shoot icy waterfalls and winter abstracts. I think I shot one waterfall abstract, before I noticed this scene developing. The next few hours were spent finding a composition, waiting and shooting.

I ended up with very cold hands and feet, and no clearer answer to my big question. However, I definitely didn't have any complaints.

Spiraling
Mechanics Library - San Francisco

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

This second post, captured during my recent interior shoot, was taken from one landing lower than my previous post. For this shot, I specifically wanted to show as much detail of the lower railing as possible. As there is one main area of wall in this shot, I decided to also do some extra post-processing, and add some punch to the yellow tone. For this, I used two Photoshop layers; one for Color Balance, and one for Hue/Saturation.

As I experienced surprising success with my ‘Lighting the Past’ Berkeley Pier shot, both through my website and especially Flickr, I wanted to share my latest blog to what was for me the secret to reviving that particular image.

This Spiral Coil
Mechanic’s Library – San Francisco

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

I felt very privileged to be granted access to photograph this beautiful old spiral staircase, located in Downtown San Francisco’s Mechanic’s Library. For me, this is a very rare interior shoot; however I had a great time.

Getting shots of this scene is totally about concentration. What did I want to include in the images I took from here, and what did I want to exclude from the scene?

IN: A pleasing composition, exposed correctly throughout as much of the image as possible and with sufficient sharpness from back to front, or in this case; top to bottom. Being able to use a tripod makes achieving this, a lot easier.

OUT: Camera strap, tripod feet, and even my own feet. If you have attempted to photograph something like this with a wide-angle lens, you will k... more »

Lighting the Past
Old Berkeley Pier – Berkeley – California

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

This image was taken in April, last year. I had initially decided not to even process shots from this first visit to Berkeley Pier, due to the plain sky. I have since returned to this spot, and posted an image featuring some nice cloud cover. When reviewing this image a second time, I decided that I did like the overall light in the scene, and therefore, just recently processed this and added it to my website.

I used a long 173 second exposure, to give the rough waves a more silky smooth appearance.

Rugged Dusy Basin - Kings Canyon National Park
Left to Right: Mt. Agassiz, Mt. Winchell, Thunderbolt Peak, Starlight Peak, North Palisade, Isosceles Peak

NOTE: My small green/grey tent is just to the right of center, behind the bush.

After an extended absence, I am so looking forward to shooting again this week! I will be catching up beginning today.

This image was captured during a memorable backpacking trip into the deep Sierra wilderness. However, this hike was so memorable for another magical reason.

That sunset was followed by a very unexpected wonder, as a lone coyote appeared to serenade the dozen or so campers almost throughout the entire night. Or perhaps; just as any living creature that lives in this magical place may rightfully do; the coyote was sounding out a friendly reminder..."This is my home, and I will defend it."

Close to the main entrance of the park and just off the road, is this impressive view, captured during an autumn sunrise. Another American icon; this image is one of my personal favorites.

Iconic Peace
Schwabacher's Landing - Grand Teton National Park - Wyoming

I wanted to begin 2013, with an image that contains both meaning and emotion. On December 19, 2012, I became a United States Citizen, so I knew that I wanted to post an image of one of America's most iconic views. However, I felt even more emotion after the tragedies that recently took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

My thought was to name this image 'Iconic Peace' wishing that one day peace will become as iconic as the beauty of nature we have become so happily use to.

On this cold morning, there were no clouds in the sky to dramatize the scene. As I could not settle on a less photographed composition, I decided to wait until a good part of the mountain peaks were bathed in sunlight. I attached a polarizing filter to my lens, and turned it until the color was at its most... more »

This is Victoria. She died a hero yesterday. She hid her first graders in the cabinets and closets after hearing the gunfire. When the shooter came to her classroom, she told him that her students were in the gym. He then gunned her down and moved on. She saved the lives of all of her students. Please pass this on if you see it. She deserves to be remembered for her bravery.

Painted Ladies City Twilight
San Francisco, California

This is a famous, much photographed view of a row of houses called The Painted Ladies. A view greatly enhanced by it's city skyline backdrop. Photographing this scene made me think of a couple of important differences between shooting well known cityscapes versus landscape views.

When shooting a much photographed landscape scene, you can still have a sense of accomplishment, knowing that you were able to make it somewhere that has required a level of extra effort.

The second point I found myself thinking about was; how many times have I made it to a less accessible scenic landscape area, only to be greeted by a port-o-potty? (As in this instance; bottom right of image)  :-))

I will be checking out other latest posts as much as possible; however since this is probably my last post untilafter Chr... more »

Netherlands - Zeeland – Westkapelle – Sunset on Shores of North Sea

Zeeland, also called Zealand in English, is the westernmost province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, consists of a number of islands and a strip bordering Belgium. Dutch Zeeland is the province of water not only by its name. Its land is cut by the North Sea bays and the delta of big rivers with many bridges, dams, ferries, under water road tunnels which a visitor is obliged to take during the simplest tour. Large parts of Zeeland are below the sea level. This reminds you about the task the Dutch took upon themselves through many centuries. Instead of attacking the neighbor countries, they decided to expand through struggle with the sea, to obtain  the land by limiting the forces of nature.

Blue Lake Dawn

This is sunrise at Blue Lake, located in the rugged and picturesque Sabrina Basin of the High Eastern Sierras. The hike to reach this is moderate, but not particularly strenuous. Roughly 2.5 miles into the wilderness will get you to beauty and solitude.

While this image may not be dramatic; for me it conveys a sense of peace and tranquility.

This was the very first image I captured using a Singh-Ray filter. A growing selection of these invaluable filters have been part of my camera kit ever since.

Where Land Meets Sky
Lake Champlain - Vermont

It was great to find this slide of a colorful sunset I captured while in Burlington, Vermont. The bad thing was that the slide was very dusty, so I cleaned it up the best I could, before having it scanned onto a disc.

I am 99.99% sure that I used a Nikon F100 camera and Fujichrome Velvia film, to capture this moment.

Packing up your gear after a couple of hard days shooting and scouting, then beginning the drive back home doesn’t always mean that there will be no more photo opportunities. I noticed a few scenes similar to this one, while driving this stretch of road. As this particular scene immediately evoked a workable composition, I pulled to the side of the road and set-up.

Winter's Solitude
Deschutes National Forest - Oregon

It was a stretch to post this week; however I really want to remain as active as possible. I started leading workshops again last month; one to Mono Lake and the other to Sand Harbor. The workshops were small; 8 and 4 participants, but they were both lots of fun. I am planning to get back into the workshop business slowly and am looking forward to making it part of my routine again.

This image of winter's cold solitude was taken at sunset. The mountains bathed in alpenglow are South Sister, Middle Sister, North Sister and Broken Top. The Three Sisters of Central Oregon are part of the Cascade Range, and are also known as Faith, Hope and Charity.

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

I thought that I would change it up a little, and post an urban landscape. The Palace of Fine Arts is located in the Marina District, close to Golden Gate Bridge.

While I prefer to capture scenes like this after suset, for better exposure calculation, this pre-dawn exposure of 30 seconds turned out OK. One of my favorite color combinations in any landscape scene is blue and gold.

Firstly, apologies for not commenting as actively as I would like. I will be catching up beginning today!

Kirkjufellsfoss - Iceland
http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/
If only I could turn back time! Soon after touching down in Reykjavik, I began the 4-hour drive to Grundarfjordur, to photograph highly picturesque Kirkjufellsfoss.

Upon arrival I quickly located this view; one of which I planned to photograph in this area. I decided to scout the area first; however feeling very tired after my travels I decided to check-in to a motel and get some rest before shooting throughout that evening and night.  The next thing I remember was waking up realizing that I had slept through both sunset and sunrise…What a lightweight!

Fade into Pink and Blue
Natural Arches State Park - Santa Cruz

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

It's not the easiest thing to post an image and say that I can do better than this. The fact is I had planned something different for this shot. However, since I was presented with just these clear cloudless conditions, I decided to go ahead and make the most of it.

I shot this 7-image panorama, in an attempt to highlight wave motion detail. I waited for the tide to sweep back into the ocean, befor releasing the shutter for each shot. Panorama stitching was performed in Kolor Autopano Pro.

I will definitely return here in the future, and attempt to capture the shot I had originally envisioned.

Mono Lake Morning Glow
South Tufa Area - Mono Lake

This was from the calm after the previous evening’s storm. While this image does not have the more colorful sky found in my Mono Lake Symphony image, I appreciated being part of a tranquil late summer sunrise here. Once again, I used a 10-stop grad to enhance color and light. Using this grad also allowed me to shoot an 81-second exposure. This added some drama to the scene by showing cloud movement, which adds a sense of dimension, while contrasting quite well with what one might perceive to be a calm and peaceful scene.

Rodeo Starlight Twilight

I took this image last year, while visiting popular Rodeo Beach, located in the Marin Headlands. I continued shooting at this spot for at least two hours, which ended up being a good thing. The sky was clear until about 9:00pm, when a thin veil of cloud cover passed over the monolith rocks. I used a 77 second exposure to show some movement in the clouds, while also sucking up the fading light to enhance the color. A very wide aperture was selected to also obtain star detail.

Sunset Curtain Call at Seljalandsfoss

This image inspired my latest blog post for two reasons. First, due to the nature of the conditions here, I did not expect to get this shot. You have to wonder why out of about 50 photographers, only me and two other people were set up behind the falls. A soaking spray from the waterfall made it extremely difficult to avoid getting water droplets on the lens. I set my aperture to f/8, to allow for a shorter exposure and less chance for droplets, and quickly placed the lens cap over the lens in-between each exposure.

The main reason for the blog was to present a Photoshop Tutorial. The way I processed this image is nothing new; however if you have not tried this processing technique, I can tell you that it is one of my favorite, and once you get through the small learning curve you may not need or want to go back to alternate techniques. Mono Lake Symphony

Being a Landscape Photographer is not just about standing around for hours taking pictures. It’s about standing around for hours waiting for a moment.

Two hours earlier: There I was again, wondering if all my planning and scene envisioning was going to come to nothing. On this occasion, I was standing in the pouring rain at Mono Lake, looking up to the sky trying to decide whether to laugh or cry. I just stood there for probably 30 minutes, when all of a sudden my attention was drawn to the western skies. For it was there that I could see the storm was coming from, and it was from the West that I could now see some patches of blue beginning to form.

As sunset drew closer, I determined which area of the sky would provide the best chance for drama and color, and then set up my tripod and camera so I could capture the unfolding moments.

Precious Life
Skógafoss – Iceland

Visiting this waterfall was not part of my original itinerary; however I was just about to drive past it when it appeared rain was about to settle in for the rest of my trip. I decided to stop here as this would probably be my last chance for a shoot.

As it was very overcast, I waited for the crowds of onlookers to dissipate until there was eventually just one person at the base of the falls gazing up at its enormous power and beauty.

Check out an excellent B&W version of this image by +Kurt Harvey  He is also very passionate about his work, as is clearly reflected in his images.
