Emerald Bay – Lake Tahoe – California

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

I have been to Lake Tahoe many times; however I had never photographed the Emerald Bay view, seen here. This particular visit was not primarily for photography; however after getting up early and seeing the good cloud cover, I got dressed and set out for Emerald Bay.

I arrived just as the light was good, so I quickly set up at a pullout overlooking this view. I took several images, using Singh-Ray grads, as well as my 10-stop filter. This was the first image I chose to process. For this image, I panned right to include as much sunrise light and color as possible.

I recently received some exciting and unexpected news. I have teamed up with a well-known photographic company, who has asked me to write a review for one of their products. I hope to have the review completed in the nextfew ... more »

Garrapata State Park – Monterey Peninsula

Being in the right place at exactly the right time is so awesome…This was not one of those times.

This was something I realized as soon as I arrived at this location. Photographers were everywhere trying to find the right composition. Unfortunately, the lilies were past peak, which meant that many of them had unattractive brown features. I finally chose this composition, and waited. The good thing was the sky was so boring, many of the photographers decided to pack up and leave…The bad thing was the sky was so boring.

I focused in on this composition as tightly as I could, just to eliminate the remaining people from the image.

When I returned home and viewed my images, I concluded that even though the conditions had resulted in me capturing a fairly uninteresting shot, I thought the composition was OK.Therefore... more »

Last week I experienced some of the most beautiful scenes I have witnessed, during a photo shoot in Lake Tahoe. However, even with the excitement of bringing home new images, I could not ignore the sadness I felt after being here.

Not that long ago, this particular view could not be experienced. The recent record-low snow pack has resulted in a dramatic drop in the lake’s water level. Because of this, both locals and visitors now had the opportunity to experience the immense beauty of an area once completely under water.

Standing in the middle of all this, taking in the breathtaking show, my goal was to photograph the beauty. However, my biggest hope is that next winter produces a large enough snow pack to return Lake Tahoe to a healthier level.

I arrived at Mono Lake’s South Tufa Area, hoping to find a composition to photograph with the Milky Way. I walked around for about an hour, but nothing inspired me. I was certainly not inspired to photograph a fire burning at nearby Yosemite National Park; however my attention shifted after looking across the lake toward the park’s Eastern border. The smoke from the fire had taken on an interesting shape, especially as it reflected in the water. The sun was also beginning to set, which added an element of color to the flumes of smoke. I chose a couple of compositions to photograph this event, deciding not to use any filters for this first image.

My thoughts are with all of the brave firefighters, law enforcement, and everyone affected by wild fires.

I had been planning this shot for a while, although I did not know if my final image would be a vertical or horizontal composition. In the end, neither worked on this occasion; however after sitting by the lake all night long, I wanted to preserve something that spoke of what I had envisioned. For this, I blended a shot of the pier pilings taken at sunset, with one shot of the night sky photographed at about 1:30 a.m. Originally, I wanted to include a foreground featuring a longer exposure, so I waited until just before sunrise to photograph the pier again. Unfortunately, both predawn and early morning light was very flat.

*Images like this are so hard to look at, but I have signed the petition and also wanted to re-share the post. These are our pets and sometimes our very best friends.*

To my friends here on G+; I am asking for your help.
It only takes a second to sign this petition, and it could mean the end of horrendous dog torture in at least one country; China.  Please, it really helps and you would be doing a good, good thing. Then, if you would share this post further, that would be great!
Will you? Please?
Thank you, on behalf of all the dogs in China.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the major federation of kennel clubs, hosts the World Dog Show every year. 10,000 dogs enter the competition, which has been called the "world's most important dog show."

10,000 is also the number of dogs eaten each year at the Yulin dog-meat eating festival in China - where FCI is planning to host the 2019 World Dog Show.

As long as the government of China has not stopped the horrific Yulin Dog Meat Eating Festival, it is not acceptable that the largest worldwide dog organization will support and arrange its biggest annual dog competition in such a country.

Other petition targets are the Chinese authorities. With this petition, we want to send your opinion to the government and the dog organization FCI. We will not support and participate in the WDS2019 as long as China accepts the Yulin Dog Meat Eating Festival, and therefore we ask FCI to move the WDS2019 to another country with a more humane view on animal welfare until China stop this horrible tradition. I took this shot about 30 minutes after my previous post. Even though the sky was not too cloudy it seemed to take forever for the sun to break through, and this was the main shot I was going for. The breeze made it difficult to use the aperture needed to capture a defined sunburst, so I decided to blend two shots in Zerene Stacker software, in an attempt to at least allow me to work with an acceptably sharp final image. The biggest thrill of this shoot was that I had never seen lupines look as good as this. I was lucky to be here during prime wildflower peak time, as I stood amongst lupines that were over five feet tall.

Bullfrog Lake – Kings Canyon National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

I would say that photographing this view was one of my top three reasons for moving to Northern California. The entire experience including the hike, camping under the stars and capturing this shot was definitely a highlight during my time here.

This image is published in the July 2015 issue of Outdoor Photographer Magazine, as part of the National Parks Pro Guide. If you read the article, it may make sense to know that I was originally asked to provide two images, of which one would be chosen for the piece. Yes, the other image was a scene photographed in Dusy Basin. :-))

I hesitated to post an image that I did not envision this way; but this trip was if nothing else, very memorable. I planned to do some night photography during this trip, but man-made light seemed to be present at every location I chose. I arrived at Convict Lake just after midnight. As I was driving into the parking area, two mountain lions approached my vehicle, one on each side. I stopped and put the car in park, and watched both lions until they disappeared into the brush. That was the first time I got to see mountain lions in the wild.

As for this shot, I was shooting toward the west-southwest. The sky to the east featured an amazing thunderstorm, while beautiful sunset color filled the northwestern sky. I thought that someone shooting at nearby Mono Lake this evening had an opportunity to photograph something very special. Two sayings speak to this shot. First, the one about a picture can’t do a scene justice. Standing there in the driving hail, witnessing multiple lightning bolts was quite the experience, but as hard as I tried I could not capture one bolt. The main part of the storm cleared right at sunset, so I was disappointed by the lack of color in the sky; however I was happy to come away with one shot from this quick but memorable trip.

My decision to shoot at Lake Tahoe was based purely on the storm in the forecast, and the chance of it clearing at sunset. This brings me to the second saying that came to mind. Be careful what you wish for…Yea, right!

This is my third image from a dramatic winter sunrise in Santa Cruz, California. For this version of the scene, I composed a little outside of my comfort zone. Ignoring the standard rule of thirds composition, I decided to tilt the camera up to include more of the colorful sky. I kept the lens at a wide enough setting and waited for the tide to recede enough so I could also capture the reflected glow in the foreground.

One positive to bending the rules of composition, is it can allow you to capture more versions of a scene, and for this particular scene I wanted to make sure that I preserved the moments.

Mesquite Dunes – Death Valley National Park

The first thing I thought about while planning this trip was how much I was looking forward to photographing the “pristine” Mesquite Dunes. However, when I arrived there for my first sunset shoot, I was somewhat horrified to find so many people on the dunes. While I agree without question that anyone else has the right to be in one of these areas, my issue was with the way this area was being treated. On this particular occasion there were about a hundred school kids on the dunes, being allowed to treat the area like a playground. I thought hard about this trying to find the appropriate answer.

My question is this. Is it OK for people to treat National Parks and scenic areas like a playground?

Outdoor Photographer Magazine March 2015

My first camera was a point-and-shoot model that cost me about $50.00. All I wanted to do with this camera was capture colorful city scenes in Atlanta and New Orleans. Wanting to improve my shooting technique, I decided to go to the book store and buy a photo magazine to study from; (a book was too much effort back then). While browsing magazines, I was in absolute awe of the crisp colorful landscape images printed in Outdoor Photographer Magazine, especially images from my first favorite photographer, Galen Rowell. This was the magazine that sparked a great passion, so it is definitely a big thrill being published within the pages where the journey began.

Sol Duc Forest – Olympic National Park

Although photographed at least ten years ago, this image remains one of my personal favorite captures. While I continually seek out landscapes to photograph that can potentially produce dramatic color and light, this scene always reminds me that it was the simple peace and tranquility found in nature that originally fueled my passion for landscape photography.

For this image, I used a polarizer and a long exposure to blur the water. My intention was to convey no drama, but instead the feeling of ethereal calm I experienced during my visit here.

This month I visited Death Valley for the first time. I was not immediately wowed by this National Park, as much as all of the other parks I have visited. I could tell that visiting this area would typically take some extra care and planning, especially for photography.

When I arrived at Badwater Basin for my planned sunset shoot, I was immediately disappointed to find that the salt flats were much more of a muddy tone that the clean white photographic tone I was hoping for. I was however, excited to see this fairly dramatic and colorful sunset sky.

Although I left Death Valley with only a few acceptable images, I had definitely begun to warm up to this enchanting place.

"Rush Hour"
Alternate Definition: Photographing a rocky coast between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, when the tide and surf are rushing in both directions.

This was the image I took at sunset, during my last trip. While waiting to take the shot, I realized that high tide was between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, so I attempted to capture the moment when the tide came in crashing over the rocks, at the same time as the surf swept back into the ocean. The resulting image was one of those "Rush Hour" ocean moments.

Breast Cancer Awareness*Reach Out

I wanted to do something a little different, and share a story with my latest image.

Just over a year ago a mother moved to the U.S. to be closer to her son. For years and for various reasons she had not taken the time to make any medical appointments. Now in the U.S. she was encouraged to take better care of herself and sign up for a medical plan. This led to her having a routine mammogram followed by a biopsy, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Learning that she had breast cancer was a shock and very scary; however in this case the fortunate thing was the cancer was detected early, at stage one. The oncology doctor scheduled the woman for the necessary lumpectomy surgery, and after some recovery time and tests it was confirmed that the woman had beaten breast cancer.

This is so important and means a lot to me. Cancer is a very hard word to hear, but if caught early, the chances of survival can increase enough to save many lives.

Natural Bridges State Beach – Santa Cruz

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

I set out while it was still dark to photograph the sunrise part of this overnight trip. Knowing that the tide would be high at this location, my original plan was to capture a wide-angle vertical image featuring a big surf-action foreground. After looking up and seeing the cloud cover I hurried down to the beach to find a spot to set up. The tide was so high I had to set-up far from the arch, and using a 16-35mm
wide-angle lens resulted in my field of view being too wide. Wanting to capture a tighter composition of this scene, I realized that I needed to move closer and stand in part of the surf. Every so often waves came crashing in above my knees, causing my tripod to shift in the sand frequently. However, I was able to re-adjust the composition between wave surges and keep my tripod steady enought... more »

Photographing fall color from Luther Pass was not the main focus of this trip. I was returning home from Convict Lake, where Mother Nature had just provided some of the craziest conditions I have witnessed. Still, I realized that so many other people have gone through far, far worse. This then led me to my current conclusion; for all of nature’s wonder and beauty, nature can be cruel more often than it can be beautiful. I will however, always appreciate its beauty.

On the way home I traveled over Monitor Pass and Carson Pass, before reaching this view from Luther Pass. After shooting from several different vantage points, I chose this 3-shot pano to be my one saving grace from this trip.

As photography has taken a backseat for the last six weeks, and I have not been on a photo shoot since South Carolina, I decided to look at some old files and choose a shot to post. I have often looked at this particular image which I took back at the beginning of the year, but always decided to pass it up. What was different this time was I thought of a title for the image first and decided that was a good enough reason to process this shot for posting.

I remember being excited that morning when I noticed this sky developing. Unfortunately, due to the darkness I could not find a good spot to capture this scene from. After hiking around for about an hour, I hurried back to the road with only enough time to quickly set up and take a few exposures before the color in the sky started to disappear. Botany Bay - Edisto Island - ACE Basin - South Carolina

This was a very memorable trip! Apart from a thousand mosquito bites, everything else went exactly as planned. Even though I wanted to get to this location as soon as possible, it was a good thing that I took the time to do some quick last minute planning before heading out. The enchanting half-mile stretch of beach where the dead trees are located is not exactly a walk up to location. I planned for sunrise photography at this location, but still drove down to the area from Charleston on the afternoon I arrived, so I would not have trouble finding the beach in the dark. If you go, be careful driving down Hwy 17 while it’s dark, as there is lots of wildlife by the side of the road. Young deer sometimes wander onto the highway, during the quiet early morning hours.

Once you arrive at the entrance to the well hidden WMA, there is an electronic gate which is usually programmed to open between half an hour and one hour before sunrise. Once you arrive at the dirt parking lot, you will then walk about a half-mile to the beach. The walk is flat, but the green wetlands are very beautiful in their own right. While walking on the boardwalk in the dark, be careful not to step on any crabs, and I would recommend not petting any of the gators.

My one small regret is not photographing other compositions, especially isolating the small tree on the right in this image. These three trees are a favorite composition, and I thought the footprint detail and photographer on the left side of this scene added interesting elements to the shot. The photographer kept fairly still during this 210 second exposure, reinforcing my feeling that it is easy to become mesmerized by a composition here.

"Now I am Free"

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

A very busy summer schedule has kept me away from social media for a while, so it feels good to be able to post a new image again.

I came across this place completely by accident while trying to decide on a future international trip, and immediately knew that no matter where this place was located, I just had to photograph here. Now, this beautiful and unusual beach has instantly been added to my favorite places list. This is one of those locations I could easily photograph every day, for at least a month.

I will include all the details about this magical place in my next post.

I took this image in the spring of 2013. The lupine display was nicer last year, at least in terms of fuller displays, and fewer bare patches. The problem last year was the sky was completely uninteresting, during my visit. Seeing this, I decided not to wait around a couple of hours for sunset, but instead just take in the view before driving home.

Before leaving, I took a shot of the scene to help me plan for a return trip this year. As the wind was mostly calm, I chose a ten second exposure, to obtain enhanced color and smoothness in the water. It took a while for me to add this image to my website and post it here, because the shot felt a bit random. However, even if not overly interesting, I used Capture One software to help me process my image and get the most out of this pretty field of lupines; one of many that lined the banks of Folsom Lake, during the spring of 2013.

At the end of my journey to the other side, I stuck around to photograph the sunrise. However, even though it was now seven hours since I photographed the Milky Way, this was still very much part of that same journey.

I stitched three separate shots of the sun rising behind Half Dome to create this image. The three shots used to create this image were also the same three shots used in the making of my previous post. “Journey to the Other Side” was made using a total of eleven shots.

I could easily include a very large narrative with this image, describing technical information and the journey it took to be able to complete this shot. While far from technically great, I am very happy that I captured this image during my first attempt to photograph the Milky Way.

I have admired this form of photography for a long time, and am now very excited to make this part of my passion. Whether you put little or great effort in to this kind of photography, the adventure and results can be memorable.

I decided that I wanted to put great effort into my first shot. After a night and sunrise of shooting, it took about two hours of post-processing to complete an image which came pretty close to what I had envisioned.

This is the third image I have made using Zerene Stacker software. After improving my technique, I hope to use this software to produce better and more dynamic images. This particular shot was taken during the time I had before getting in to the main reason for this trip, which was more of a scouting and learning mission for a new project.

Spring Lupines – Folsom Lake Recreation Area

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/
I photographed this location last year, but due to the completely blank sky I chose not to post any of the images I captured. The sky was not much more interesting on this occasion, but not wanting to go away empty handed I attempted to get a little creative with the available light by composing the scene to include the sun setting behind a background tree.

I have just posted a new product review on my website. The review is for software that I do not believe is well known in the landscape photography community. Depending on what kind of subject you photograph, this software could be a great addition to your creative workflow. The software was used to process the lupine sunset image.

Merced River - Yosemite National Park

Posting an image of this scene next to one of Hanalei Bay, makes me realize how lucky I am to live in a country that contains such a beautiful and diverse landscape. Just like many places in our world, stress and sadness can be common when experiencing the hassles of modern day life, and knowing of the many tragedies and suffering that occur around the world.

I took this shot last December, and more than anything else, I can remember the absolute peace I felt while witnessing the serene stillness. However, a peek over a shoulder every now and then to make sure there were no restless hungry bears around still seemed to be a good idea at the time.

Hanalei Bay – Kauai

This is my third image to post of beautiful Hanalei Bay. This shot was taken from the east side of Hanalei Pier, to include more of the rugged Na Pali Coast cliffs. I wanted to capture the long exposure effects this scene so often allows for, including the streaking clouds after a fast passing storm, and the reflected light enhanced in the moving tide.

If photographing beach and island scenes is your thing, then I cannot recommend this area enough. Kauai features amazing and diverse scenery, but just the area between Princeville and Ke’e Beach can provide countless photographic opportunities and memorable experiences.

I took this shot during sunrise. Once again it was raining just before dawn; however the storm was now passing, leaving painterly skies over the north shore of Kauai.

Wanting to fill the frame; I stood at the edge of the water where the tide was coming in so I could include the foreground surf in the image.

When I returned home and viewed my images, I concluded that even though the conditions had resulted in me capturing a fairly uninteresting shot, I thought the composition was OK. Therefore, I racked my brain trying to think of a way to breathe life into the shot. Enter the rainbow! Not part of the original scene, the rainbow was created in Photoshop. This is something I would very rarely even think of doing, but once completed I was still able to look at my finished image as a form of artistic expression.

Hanalei Bay – Kauai – Hawaii

Even though this was not a photography shooting trip, I was able to find time to go out and shoot during sunrise. The amazingly cool thing was the beach house I was staying at was literally just steps from here, so I would get up early each morning and walk across the rain-soaked lawn to the beach.

My intention is to attempt to convey each scene I photograph as originally as possible, so I chose this particular morning to shoot a series of images at thirty seconds each to use for a panorama. The light at Hanalei Bay can be magical, as it was on this particular morning and I wanted to present an image that showcased as much of that light as possible.

I chose the canyon featured in this image to hike because it is well known for vibrant fall color. However, due to last year’s long warmer summer most of the leaves in the canyon had not yet changed. Not wanting to give up, I hiked deeper into the canyon until I found this colorful display.

I waited for the sun to dip below the high canyon walls, so the scene could be photographed in even light.

I will be traveling during the next few weeks, exploring options for new workshop locations. I will also be working on another software product review. This is a product that very few of my contacts, (if any) have used. It is especially rare to use this software for landscape photography, so I am both excited and curious to see the results of my tests.

Photographing this view including city lights was not the only image I wanted to capture. Panorama and long exposure photography was also part of the plan. Due to the orientation of the sun, I knew that I would have a better chance of good light during the early morning hours. After shooting a few long exposures just before sunrise, it was now time for the sun to light up part of the city, and I could concentrate my efforts on a panorama image. I waited for different parts of the scene to become illuminated, and then took fourteen separate exposures. Pre-visualizing the shot, I had already attached a Singh-Ray Blue-Gold Intensifying filter to my lens. This was the extra ingredient needed to help enhance the areas of bright sunlight.

I have wanted to photograph this view for about three years. This January I was given a great opportunity to finally capture this view, so I did as much as possible to make the most of my opportunity.

This image was taken from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. While it would have been ideal to photograph from a rooftop location, I decided that I would be content with setting up for the shot from my room. I used various techniques that are recommended when photographing from behind a glass window. I found the results of these techniques can vary dramatically in different conditions. I would suggest not relying solely on every technical recommendation when shooting in the field, but to perform tests first before determining what works best for your particular shooting situation.

Ice Spiders at Pohono Bridge

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

Thousands of Sierra ice spiders march across the frozen Merced River. The rare ice spiders can only be seen every twelve years, and make the march just once during that winter. According to legend, a single bite from one of the spiders will turn any living thing to ice.

This is one of the shots I took on the morning after my Valley View moonlight image. During that morning, I photographed winter scenes from both sides of Pohono Bridge.

The funny thing about photographing Yosemite during winter is it can sure bring out a wild and vivid imagination from a visitor! The ice spiders were actually formed after snow has partly melted, then frozen and crystalized on top of the ice.

Excellent photographer +pal Borsting has shared a great circle!

♥♥♥ Thank you circle no.1 containing Photo enthusiasts!  ♥♥♥
☀☀ ☀To let my plussers know that I appreciate the plussones. ☀☀☀
☀☀☀ All of them handpicked by me. This is the real thing :-) ☀☀☀
♥♥ And of course the resharers and commenters are here too. ♥♥

Last time I got problems with google blocking me for plus mentioning too many so this time I will roll out the four circles gradually.

Reshare if you like! Please plus to tell me you have seen it! *There is no need to thank me, this is me thanking you! *

In this circle you will find both photographers and their followers. What they have in common is a passion for photos they like.

This circle consists of the exceptional people who time and time again reshares, plusses and write nice comments on my photo posts. All of them are real active people, some have been active since I began sharing my photos and still are and some I have seen only for a shorter time.
I have separated my Thank you circle into four circles. There is no difference between them except for different people to say thank you to.

I already work on the next "Thank you circle"  So if you are missing here, you will be in it if you are active from this week. I do not expect you to like all my photos, so please only plus the ones you like! If I see you twice in a months time I will add you.

The four circles is collected from middle of November until now. In parallel I am building a new circle that I started a month ago. In a months time the people in the new circle will be shared. The old one will be kept as reference to add people that return after a longer break.  I use #Circloscope premium to help me manage, but the rotation from the old circle to the new is the only way people gets kicked out. http://www.circloscope.com/2013/04/google-plus-circle-management-tool.html +Circloscope

A bit of caution here, I do NOT check the quality of what my engagers share. They are here since they are appreciating my photos. You have to do your own selection after importing the circles.

Please let me know if you somehow slipped through my masks. I am doing this in a combined automatic and manual way and I am old enough too know there might be errors. And there have been errors I have discovered. That is really the only thing that bothers me with this circles........

This image is the result of a very memorable and enjoyable seven hours on Yerba Buena Island. From the moment I parked my car, I started to make new friends. At about 7:00pm, we found one of the popular viewpoints to photograph this scene. By the time the fireworks started there must have been a hundred photographers up on the hill where we stood high above Bay Bridge. The five hours waiting for the fireworks to start passed by quickly as we all spent the time discussing photography techniques.

I was anxious to review the images I had captured when I returned home the following day. I looked at several images while trying to decide which one of them I would process. Eventually, I chose four of the images and blended elements from each to create one master image file.

Valley View - Yosemite National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

I visited Yosemite in winter for the first time this month. I have wanted to photograph this scene with snow covered foreground boulders from the moment I saw it, and now after experiencing it, I can say for sure that Yosemite Valley becomes a truly magical place in winter.

I knew going in that the forecast called for clear blue skies which was almost a reason for not making the trip. However, one of the shots I envisioned was this scene lit by moonlight, and the moon was a couple of days away from being full.

After about three hours of shooting here, I chose this composition to photograph. Valley View was now illuminated by moonlight only. When I finally picked my head up from behind the camera viewfinder, I noticed it was now dark and I was the only one around. It was hard toleav... more »

The third image I am posting of Twin Lakes Falls is this horizontal composition taken at sunrise. Even though this was an ideal scene for vertical orientation, I prefer this horizontal shot which includes water cascading over a large rock slab.

Looking at the similar composition I posted in June gives a great example of how the same scene can be photographed in very different ways. That particular composition was photographed on the previous afternoon, using a 10-stop ND filter.

I have resisted posting this image for a long time. This shot was scanned from an 8x10 print, as I have not been able to find the original transparency. The result was a picture with an excessive amount of grain and noise. The only processing completed for this image was attempting to eliminate as much noise as possible. For this, I used both Photoshop and Capture One.

I first attempted to capture this scene at twilight; however I cut my leg badly on a barb-wire fence while setting up my tripod. When I returned to my hotel the girl at the front desk made me sit down in the lobby while she carefully applied first-aid to my leg. At that moment I knew she would be the girl for me.

The next morning I made another attempt to capture this scene. It was several years ago, so all I remember for sure was that I took this shot with a Pentax 645 camera and Fujichrome Velvia film. Exposure was either four or eight-seconds, using an aperture of f/8 or f/11.

After that evening, I never saw the front desk girl again.

REVIEW JUST POSTED! I will add it to Google+ next!

I was both surprised and honored when Phase One offered to send me their RAW processing software in exchange for a product review. I do not have negative comments about any of the other popular image processing software programs, currently on the market. However, after testing similar processing software, I concluded that Capture One Pro 7 would give me the chance to present the best possible final image. I hope this first review of Capture One will be helpful to anyone currently considering software processing options.

This image was taken about 30 minutes later than my previous post. For this shot I replaced the two grad filters with a 10-stop filter. With good cloud cover and available light present, I panned my camera to the left, so the scene was centered and shot a long exposure to create the streaking cloud effect.  ... more »

I hope to have the review completed in the nextfew ... more »

Hidden Lake and Bearhat Mountain – Glacier National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

This is the image I was most satisfied with taken during my Glacier NP trip. This is because the shot turned out very close to the way I planned it. I wanted to fuse both panorama and long exposure techniques to present this sweeping view, while keeping the light as even as possible throughout the scene. The sky is not perfect; however the final image is very close to the way I witnessed it.

After attaching my B+W 10-stop filter, I could not see through the viewfinder, presenting a challenge to compose each shot properly. Choosing to shoot horizontally while over-compensating for image overlap resulted in a technically sound panorama. Shooting vertically would not only have been more challenging, but would have also resulted in a noticeably bowed image.

Swiftcurrent Lake - Glacier National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

This is the second of three images shot at Swiftcurrent Lake, that I am adding to my website. I am used to being satisfied with being able to take home just one shot of a particular scene; however lately I have been trying harder to capture multiple shots of the same view. My intention is to capture images that portray the same scene in a completely different way. To do this, I attempt different styles of photography, which include panorama format, long exposure photography and a standard single exposure. Of course, time and conditions do not always allow for multiple captures; however on this occasion, shooting this scene at sunset and sunrise allowed me to use each technique.

I have heard people say that it is better to find one photography technique you like; learn it, be good at it and stick with it. Instead, I prefer to keep an open mind, and always seek out new ways to present nature as I see it. Thinking about it another way; as digital photography has become so popular, the challenge to capture images that look a little different can keep the passion burning forever.

Swiftcurrent Lake - Glacier National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com

The Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park is one of my favorite areas in the Park. I could easily spend a week there hiking the trails, being wowed by the grizzlies and enjoying some of the comforts available at the grand Many Glacier Hotel.

On this particular morning one of those comforts cost me. I camped down the road from the hotel, and woke up early to shoot sunrise at Swiftcurrent Lake. The sky was completely grey and overcast, which probably explained why I was the only photographer at the lake on a weekend morning, in August.

A little after sunrise (if there would have been one) I decided to walk to the hotel and buy a cappuccino. As I began to take a sip of my sweet warm beverage, I looked out the Great Room window. To my amazement, the sun had broken through the... more »

To my amazement, the sun had broken through the clouds, lighting the surrounding peaks. I quickly returned to the spot where I wanted to set up, and began to shoot. Keeping to my plan, I shot several long exposures for this panorama.

Hidden Lake and Bearhat Mountain - Glacier National Park

http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/

This summer I completed eight fantastic weeks leading workshops for students, at the Parks & Rec. Department. I have been doing this since 2006, starting in Bend, Oregon. Thanks to digital, increasingly more teens are becoming interested in photography. Since that first year, the focus has gone from pop bands and love-life, to wanting to learn about photography.

The downside is I have completed just one photo shoot this entire year. Therefore, I decided to head out to Glacier National Park for a few days. Although it was an amazing time, I was generally disappointed with the images I captured. However, there is one image that came out as planned, which I will post later.

I will try to comment catch-up as quickly as I can.

Slow Motion Falls
Twin Lakes - Mammoth Lakes - Eastern Sierras

Even though I was just scouting this view at the time, I could not leave here without taking a shot.  I envisioned vertical orientation for this scene; however a horizontal composition would include more of the top of the falls. Therefore, I decided to attach my B&W 110 filter, and attempt a long exposure. My intention was to add a surreal effect to this daytime capture, by turning the waterfall into slow motion mist.
