This is a great honor, and an even bigger surprise, as my image here received considerably less views than others I have posted. Got to give thanks to +Jarek Klimek I very much appreciate this one!

Inflating the Colors
http://www.davidshieldphotography.com
There is just something different about this image when comparing it to my previous post, but I cannot quite figure it out.
OK, seriously; I am so much more excited to work with color.
To get this shot, I had to step inside of the balloon, while it was being inflated. I wanted to get as close as possible to the canvas, so I could capture as much of the design and color detail, as possible.
I recently made the decision to try other RAW software programs, and see if I could improve my workflow and output results. This particular image was processed using a 60-day trial version of Capture One Pro 7.
The image was taken during a hot air ballon festival held at Piedmont Park, in Atlanta, Georgia.

City in Motion B&W
Downtown Seattle
I am intrigued with the concept of processing evening and night time city scenes in B&W. I like the way the bright mono toned lights contrast with the dark areas, especially the building lights.
I am currently experimenting with different RAW software programs, and this was the particular processed version I liked best.
This view of the Seattle Skyline was taken from the dirt road behind Jose Rizal Park, located in Beacon Hill.

St. Mary Falls
Glacier National Park
Montana
This was taken several years ago, around the time I first realized what effect long exposures could have in a waterfall scene. I was still learning technique (obviously), and have to laugh at myself now. For, as you can see; I went a little overboard on the exposure. As I used a polarizer for this image, and set my aperture to f/22, the resulting shutter speed was 8 seconds. A good deal of the water in this image is noticeably hot (over-exposed). As part of my personal shooting style is to produce fairly high contrast impact images, I thought it would be a good time to present this shot.

Rat Island

This is a very rare B&W processed image, for me. I decided to process it this way, because I was not happy with the color version; however I wanted to post it as I liked the composition. I used a long exposure to smooth out the waves. I confess that I have a lot to learn when it comes to B&W; however color is by far my personal preference. Besides, there are many extremely talented B&W photographers to admire, here on Google+.
I will return to this location in the very near future, and attempt to capture a good color version of this scene.

Mt. Banner & Mt. Ritter
Ediza Lake
Ansel Adams Wilderness
A little further into the wilderness than my previous post, and the scenery becomes even more prestine. I began this hike at the Agnew Meadows trailhead, located in Mammoth Lakes. The hike follows the Shadow Lake Drainage up to Shadow Lake. From here, hikers must decide which one of the much sought after destinations to continue to. While both Garnet and 1000 Island Lakes are just as popular, I chose one of my favorite spots in all of the Eastern Sierras. Ediza Lake is 6.5 miles from the trailhead.
The great thing being here on this morning was having the lake all to myself, as I was the only person who got up at sunrise to photograph the stillness. The bad thing was while I was the only human at the edge of the Lake, I was joined by about a million fun-loving hungry mosquitoes who clearly wanted to get to know... more »

Sierra Wilderness Sunrise
North Peak and Shamrock Lake
Hiking into the 20 Lakes Basin area, was my very first overnight backpacking trip to the Eastern Sierras. This trail is a great way to get into backpacking the Sierras, as it is one of the less difficult hikes, yet leads to many beautiful scenic lakes. Shamrock Lake is about 3.5 miles from the trailhead. The trailhead is located just 2 miles from the entrance of Yosemite National Park, on it's eastern boundary.

NEW: In The Spotlight –– Announcement Post
It's time to show your fellow Google+ photographers some appreciation folks –– and I will provide you with the forum for exactly that; the brand new In The Spotlight circle.
What's the In The Spotlight circle?
It's a circle for my favorite photographers as well as yourself and your favorite people (it could be people you know or people you admire but never interacted with). It's the hottest circle yet here on Google+, a circle you definitely want to be a part of.
Who can participate?
Anybody. As long as the main focus lies on photography. It's neither a pro circle, nor an amateur dito. It's a circle for great and active people loving the art of photography.
How can I be a part of this?
It's very simple. Jus... more »

Swoosh
Mt. Rainier National Park
Whenever I look at this image, I think of a question that I cannot seem to answer the same way twice in a row...
Am I happier to capture a shot that has taken careful pre-planning, or a scene that presents itself, completely out of the blue?
On this occasion, I was in Mt. Rainier NP, to shoot icy waterfalls and winter abstracts. I think I shot one waterfall abstract, before I noticed this scene developing. The next few hours were spent finding a composition, waiting and shooting.
I ended up with very cold hands and feet, and no clearer answer to my big question. However, I definitely didn't have any complaints.

Announcing the Winners of Best Mountain Photos Contest | March 2013 and Sharing the Circle of Best Mountain Photos Contest Photographers
Thank you everyone for your participation and for your plusses (votes). We had another breathtaking event with a lot of awesome mountain photos coming in from across the globe. We also had a chance of knowing a lot of new mountain photographers. About 120 entries run for the best mountain photos of the month and unfortunatelly several entries had to be removed due to failing to follow the rules.
Note: The Best Mountain Photos Contests starts on the first Wednesday of each month and the event details are announced publicly beforehand on the page stream of +Mountain Photos. The contest theme for the next best mountain photos contest will be mountains with reflection.

Spiraling
Mechanics Library - San Francisco
http://www.davidshieldphotography.com
This second post, captured during my recent interior shoot, was taken from one landing lower than my previous post. For this shot, I specifically wanted to show as much detail of the lower railing as possible. As there is one main area of wall in this shot, I decided to also do some extra post-processing, and add some punch to the yellow tone. For this, I used two Photoshop layers; one for Color Balance, and one for Hue/Saturation.
As I experienced surprising success with my ‘Lighting the Past’ Berkeley Pier shot, both through my website and especially Flickr, I wanted to share my latest blog to what was for me the secret to reviving that particular image.

This Spiral Coil
Mechanic’s Library – San Francisco
http://www.davidshieldphotography.com
I felt very privileged to be granted access to photograph this beautiful old spiral staircase, located in Downtown San Francisco’s Mechanic’s Library. For me, this is a very rare interior shoot; however I had a great time.
Getting shots of this scene is totally about concentration. What did I want to include in the images I took from here, and what did I want to exclude from the scene?
IN: A pleasing composition, exposed correctly throughout as much of the image as possible and with sufficient sharpness from back to front, or in this case; top to bottom. Being able to use a tripod makes achieving this, a lot easier.
OUT: Camera strap, tripod feet, and even my own feet. If you have attempted to photograph something like this with a wide-angle lens, you will k... more »

Lighting the Past
Old Berkeley Pier – Berkeley – California
http://www.davidshieldphotography.com/
This image was taken in April, last year. I had initially decided not to even process shots from this first visit to Berkeley Pier, due to the plain sky. I have since returned to this spot, and posted an image featuring some nice cloud cover. When reviewing this image a second time, I decided that I did like the overall light in the scene, and therefore, just recently processed this and added it to my website.
I used a long 173 second exposure, to give the rough waves a more silky smooth appearance.

Rugged Dusy Basin - Kings Canyon National Park
Left to Right: Mt. Agassiz, Mt. Winchell, Thunderbolt Peak, Starlight Peak, North Palisade, Isosceles Peak
NOTE: My small green/grey tent is just to the right of center, behind the bush.
After an extended absence, I am so looking forward to shooting again this week! I will be catching up beginning today.
This image was captured during a memorable backpacking trip into the deep Sierra wilderness. However, this hike was so memorable for another magical reason.
That sunset was followed by a very unexpected wonder, as a lone coyote appeared to serenade the dozen or so campers almost throughout the entire night. Or perhaps; just as any living creature that lives in this magical place may rightfully do; the coyote was sounding out a friendly reminder..."This is my home, and I will defend it."
