Prop C Wins: LA Voters Send Strong Message Against Supreme Court's Citizens United Ruling
In a blow against the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, the second-largest city in the U.S. sent a strong, if symbolic, message against corporate personhood and unlimited corporate spending on political campaigns.
Los Angeles voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition C, a resolution that instructed local and state officials to promote the overturning of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. With 100 percent of precincts reporting by 3:16 a.m. Wednesday, Prop C had won 76.6 percent of the vote, according to the LA City Clerk's unofficial results.

CA Senate approves bill to regulate medical marijuana shops
The California Senate passed a bill today that would shield pot shops following state guidelines for dispensing medical marijuana from prosecution for marijuana possession or sale.
Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg said the goal of his Senate Bill 439 is to keep criminals out of the medical marijuana business and clarify confusion between state and federal law. Federal authorities have gone after some dispensaries in California because while they are legal under California's Proposition 215, they are forbidden under federal law.
The Legislature can't change federal law, but Steinberg said his bill would make clear that marijuana collectives, dispensaries and other business entities may pay employees and provide benefits as long as they comply with guidelines the Attorney General wrote in... more »

Scientists have made a long-awaited breakthrough in human cloning, by using human skin cells to create early-stage embryos.
In what is being described as a "significant milestone" for medicine, the team from Oregon Health and Science University successfully used a technique which utilised a human skin cell and a woman's egg to produce an embryo which was a genetic copy of the original skin cell.
The resulting embryos were then used as a source of stem cells, which can be used to create specialised tissue cells for transplant operations.

The state of California tracks how many inmates move from local jails to state hospitals each year, a possible measure of which jails are doing a poorer job of treating their mentally ill. But a county-by-county comparison of these transfers is complicated by variables difficult to tease out. These variables include county size, jail population and the different reasons why mentally ill inmates seek such transfers.
Even so, when compared to counties of similar population size, Fresno County ranks near the top in the number of inmates it transfers to state hospitals. Over the past five years, state figures show, Fresno County has sent 386 inmates to Atascadero, Metro and Patton state hospitals.
