There's a lot in this HBR piece, but something that jumped out at me:
Increasingly, the CIO and IT must be seen less as developing and deploying technology, and more as a source of innovation and transformation that delivers business value, leveraging technology instead of directly delivering it.

I don't trust Zuckerberg enough to even have a Facebook account, let alone give Facebook the personal data so well described in this GigaOm piece.
Excerpt:
The phone’s GPS can send constant information back to the Facebook servers, telling it your whereabouts at any time. So if your phone doesn’t move from a single location between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. for say a week or so, Facebook can quickly deduce the location of your home. Facebook will be able to pinpoint on a map where your home is, whether you share your personal address with the site or not. It can start to build a bigger and better profile of you on its servers. It can start to correlate all of your relationships, all of the places you shop, all of the restaurants you dine in and other such data.

A lot of good things in this article. I think it's clear that the prez has to go for this thing to see closure and for Rutgers to restore their honor.
After Pernetti revealed Barchi had seen the Rice footage, the president made it clear he'd only seen it Tuesday -- the day ESPN's "Outside the Lines" broadcast the footage -- and not when his AD saw it in the fall. So Barchi admitted he was told months ago there was video of one of his most visible employees abusing multiple students, multiple times, and he never asked to see that video.
"I can't imagine the president not even taking five minutes to watch it," Sperber said.
"Barchi either knew exactly what was going on and didn't do anything about it, in which case he should be fired," Dowling said. "Or he didn't know about it and is incompetent, in which case he... more »

Couldn't have said it better.
So, Rutgers, it’s time to do the right thing, even if it’s belated. Fire Mike Rice for treating his players as less than human. While a coach needn’t coddle his players, no coach should be able to get away with the exact opposite, of bullying his players to the point that at least three transferred and, according to Murdock, even more lost interest in basketball.
And for good measure, fire the man whose slap-on-the-wrist, protect-the-institution mentality made the entire university complicit in one coach’s anger management issues. It would be a good statement for the NCAA to hear, that the players are, in fact, more important than the machine,

Industry reports for the most recent quarter (4Q12) show that while overall server revenue is only growing at 3.1 percent year-over-year; Linux experienced 12.7 percent year-over-year growth for the quarter while Windows only increased 3.2 percent
Management’s perception of Linux remains increasingly positive with 95 percent viewing Linux as equally or more strategic to the organization than in prior years. Specific concerns have plummeted with one exception. Rapid growth is contributing to growing concerns about finding trained Linux talent.

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS
Stolen from a Facebook post, but science is science and G+ loves.... science.
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon:
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
**Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder... more »

On Unity:
Canonical dropped the ball on this one big time. I know it's an old issue at this point but I wanted to wait a bit before saying anything to see if they would remove it in a future release. Looks like it's here to stay and so I'm gone from Ubuntu. I cannot recommend a system that, by design, violates privacy.
Don't get me wrong, I still really like Ubuntu and I'm not abandoning everything about it. Instead, I'm abandoning everything to do with the Unity Desktop Environment (of which lens are a part).

Well said!
But this group [of power users], though small, are some of the web’s most engaged users. They are the people building its pieces and underpinnings, and filling it with content. As The Guardian aptly put it today, killing Reader is like killing the bees. The damage to the ecosystem extends beyond the hundreds of thousands, or millions rather, impacted directly by Google Reader’s death.

Agree with the author that Ubuntu has done a great job putting Linux on more desktops. Hope they keep on pushing on.

So perhaps the time is approaching when the question should be asked: is it worth considering energy storage? Is it cost effective? Should householders go it alone, or in a community group? And what are the implications for other network users? Already, network operators and generators are bleeding because every solar panel that is added reduces demand and eats away at their centralised generation model. Batteries would only accelerate that change.

Professor Kaner is now in the process of seeking funding for mass production of the graphene micro supercapacitors. If realized, this could be the first step to a revolution in the marriage of renewable energy methods and energy capture. It will be very interesting to see how this nascent technology is implemented.

As a Linux user and Mint guy I wish Shuttleworth and Ubuntu great success.
Shuttleworth is in a bit of a hurry. Since its founding in March 2004, Canonical has made a big splash in terms of visibility. But the break-even point is still not in sight. The founder reportedly had a billion dollars in his pocket when he started out, but some of that has now gone down the drain. One can't run a company of this size on love and fresh air.

#Ubuntu Mir: Is This the Future of Linux Everywhere?
Ubuntu — possibly the most popular distribution of the open source Linux operating system — is striking out on its own. Canonical, the commercial company that oversees Ubuntu, has made a habit of building new Linux components from scratch, moving away from tools built and used by the larger open source community. That’s rubbing many Linux developers and users the wrong way, and now Canonical may have finally alienated these hard-core open sourcers.
The company is building its own platform for running a Windows-like interface on #Linux, and many are up-in-arms. This sort of Linux world controversy often means little to the rest of the planet. But #Canonical’s user-interface strategy could help decide the future of Linux on #desktops, smartphones, and tablets.
