This work illustrates the use of HITS-CLIP to identify sparse information in ncRNA http://shar.es/C26cX ... the result:  identification of otherwise invisible exons that cause transcripts to degrade, regulating protein levels.  This regulation happens in the brain after seizure, and many of the transcripts affected may mediate compensatory responses to epilepsy.

I rejected the idea idea of having +New York Genome Center "Seek Answers in Genome of Gunman" http://nyti.ms/12AP11b ... I believe this is a mistake for +UConn to be involved in ...short term publicity will have a good chance of yielding here to stigmatizion without answers...finding genetic causes of disease in well defined families and phenotypes remains extremely difficult, and the effort here seems as misleading as it is questionable.

Mika Brzezinski, co-host of “Morning Joe” discusses the ramifications of the disturbing news that Romney lied during the debate about the “binders of women”.

Mika also pointed out that Romney’s portrayal of women’s work needs seemed reflective of an archaic and demeaning perception of women and went on to note that women should be concerned about Romney, particularly if they combine all that with the assumption that Romney does not support the Lilly Ledbetter Act which guarantees equal pay for women.

The panel includes economic analyst Steve Rattner and Time’s Mark Halperin, who analyze comments Mitt Romney made during Tuesday’s presidential debate at Hofstra University, and in particular that his “binders full of women” for staff positions when he was governor of Massachusetts.

My decoding of the ENCODE project.  (a mixture of lay and technical comments).

This was a massive compilation of information.  It used many different techniques, each of which has various strengths/flaws.  A great tool for going through the data is present here: http://www.nature.com/encode/

The main goal was to look at the regulation of how DNA is transcribed into RNA.  As some have put it, it is a Google road map of DNA regulation.  It is a massive amount of information.  But a Google map is only useful if you have someplace to go or to think about that is interesting.  This is not as accessible or immediately revolutionary a dataset as the first sequence of the human or even mouse genome.  In some ways, it is most informative for its highlighting what we don't know--much of the mapping elements are missing--as below, think of a map where streetlamps and houses arenoted, s... more »

A key NY Times Op-Ed article unmasking problems with Romney's failing to reveal tax records...by a tax expert.  Re: disclosure requested: the Senate typically requires more for confirmation to a subcabinet post.    Romney also has an  I.R.A. account of $20 million to $101 million..."quite a trick to turn contributions that are limited to $30,000 to $50,000" to many millions...raising suspicion in my mind (it would take ~1,000 years, and/or a return which would seem implausible).  Romney transferred $100 million to his sons, & would owe $29-$44M in taxes, but there is no comment on this.  "If he did not file any gift tax return, he would still be liable for the tax, plus interest and penalties...every good tax professional knows that gift tax returns are rarely audited"

News from NINDS workshop "Optimizing the predictive value of preclinical research" to discuss ways to improve the rigor of research...basically discussion was of whether/how to set a minimum set of standards by which this research should be conducted/held to.  Broad consensus that such minima would be worthwhile to at least have investigators report on (biologic replicates/reproducibility, for animal studies randomization, blinding, power calculations) and presumably adhere to unless there were specific reasons not to.  The big issue is that preclinical studies are used as the rationale for large clinical studies, and that currently the quality of preclinical studies seems inadequate.  Interesting and important discussions/topic.

The tomato genome (Heinz ketchup!  strain Heinz 1706) has been sequenced, and it is more complex than ours!  At least in terms of traditional protein coding genes, >31,760 vs our (human) measly 23,000.  I don't know what that tells one (OK, they had a diversification strategy that we didn't use), other than--protein coding genes is not where it is at...a conclusion obvious from looking at C Elegans, the worm with 300+ neurons and ~the same number of protein coding genes as humans.  Where is the complexity--back to the beginning...RNA!

Wonderful clear article, graphs documenting global warming data, written as a rebuttal to Wall Street Journal article written by 16 skeptics--I'm embarrassed to say including one from Rockefeller University--thoroughly discredited for being sloppy in thinking and abusive in tone in the attached rebuttal. It's hard to understand the denial of data except in terms of naiveté at best, or economic corruption at worst. http://tinyurl.com/7aq9ct5.

Congratulations to Bill Nordhaus from Yale, who wrote the rebuttal. I'd love to see others chime in in support of rational science here.
