Week 21:  Curves
Title:  Once Upon a Time

This may not quite fit the theme insofar as there is really only one curve and not many.  Or, one could argue, I suppose, that there are really two curves - one at the top and another at the bottom that meet at the far right.  Then again, if you look closely, you can see there is a third curve in the form of a jog in the curve on the bottom.  Okay, so maybe this does fit the theme after all.

Week 20:  Contrasting Colours
Title:  Out Standing

It was a beautiful day for a walk in the park.  There was this trail that wandered through this stand of ramrod-strait trees.  The light filtering through the fresh verdant foliage provided this outstanding opportunity to play around a little and capture these fellows standing out in their field.  The contrast of the dark trunks against the light greens and subtle yellows fit the theme I thought.

Week 20: Framed
Title: Aquarium

I visited a auto graveyard today and while exploring around the rusted carcasses of various vehicles, I looked into the back of this dilapidated van.  The windows had obviously been tinted using that applied film that predated the standard feature now applied during the manufacturing process.  With time and weather, the film starts to loosen giving this mottled effect. To me it seemed like I was a fish in an aquarium looking out at the world through the bubbled surface.

Week 19: Clouds and Sky
Title:  Turmoil

It's been very windy (and cold) here lately and the clouds have been racing across the sky.  At times they have poured rain down on us poor dogwalkers, or blessed us with hail or anointed us with ice pellets. It's been a mixed bag and difficult to capture them.  And because I live in a large city, there are no grand vistas where I live (unless I go to the lake's edge, which I couldn't do this week) so I got a snap shot of small portion of the cloudy sky as the many strata merged and converged, broke up and revealed some blue.  No lazy summer skies but a heaven showing unrest and in turmoil.

Title: Pseudo Foodo

No cooking today...only restaurant fare.  So, needing to feed my puppies, I opened the refrigerator and, being short on inspiration, saw my opportunity and grasped the straw.  So here it is, not really food but edible with food and thus the title.

Week 18: Symmetry
Title: Natural Symmetry

Nobody does it better than Mother Nature.  I had no trouble finding symmetry around the house in the form of man-made objects...but they were all pretty boring.  So, I stepped outside the back door and started looking around.  I found lots of symmetry within a few feet and all of it was so artistically arranged.  Each of the flowers on this plant is perfectly natural example of symmetry. Nobody does it better.

Week 18: Speed
Title:  Set to Lo

Two things went into the making of this picture: 1) I was running out of time to get a shot for this theme and 2) the weather had turned warm (finally).  As a result, I was lying in my bed last night, after having turned on the ceiling fan, thinking about how I could get a shot...and soon. I found myself in that state of limbo - not quite awake but not yet asleep either - watching the arms of the fan whir around mesmerizing me to a state of semi-hypnosis.  Somewhere in the midst of all that, it occurred to me that, even if the speed of the fan was set to low, it was still a speed.  So, here you have my submission, "Set to Lo" (spelled, lo, because that is what is on the remote control).

Title: Tea Time

This is my current favourite room only because it was recently redone and is joy to work in or just sit at the table and relax with a cup of tea.  Even when the novelty wears off,  I think I will still enjoy being in this room, working in this room and eating the results of my labor in this room.  If you're in the neighbourhood, drop by for a cup of tea in my favourite room.

Week 17: Night Lights
Title:  Double Take

Long after the household's occupants have started sawing wood and the main lights have been turned off, this little light glows on bravely, in the dark.  Casting its rays into the murk, it's goal is to guide those in a hurry safely to their destination.  It's only in the dark of night that one sees that what it's actually doing is admiring it's own likeness reflected on the surface of the granite counter.  Only in the dark, does this night light do a double take.

Title:  Get in Gear

This is what I consider a hi-tech bicycle street stand.  It may not do a lot but it has been creatively constructed and I thought rather ingeniously, at that. It represents a period of old technology, before solid state transistors and the like,  when gears moved the world rather than electrons.  It is my submission for this week's theme of technology to #weeklyphotoproject2013   +Weekly Photo Project 2013

Title: Huddled

Flowers!  What flowers?  There is snow on the ground and freezing rain with no end in sight!  At a time when we should be seeing crocuses, tulips, daffodils and the like, we have no colour in the garden.  No flowers brave enough to push through the frozen snowy crust are showing their faces.  So, I had to resort to an indoor plant for this week's theme...here's some hydrangea petals huddled together in an effort to stay warm, something to which I can truly relate.

This is one of those plug-in night lights that I have strategically placed about the house for those times when I want to go prowling about in the dark - but not total dark. Title:  Hop on Board

This is the foundation to a mode of transportation that opened up this country of Canada and connected its vast landscapes to each other.  Although it's been eclipsed today by the more popular modes of transportation - cars and planes - trains still hold great appeal to many of us.  These tracks beckoned to me, as they always do, and ignites my wanderlust.  I just want to 'hop on board' and be off.

Week 13:  Look Up
Title:  Standing Proud

Today, I visited a small town nestled in the rolling hills outside of Toronto. This town has many good examples of the architecture from the time when it was founded in the mid-1800's.  Here is an example of the colourful slate roof, ornate wrought iron work and intricate wood details under the eaves that were prevalent in its heyday and which can still be found in abundance here and throughout towns of similar vintage.  This tower sits atop what used to be the town hall and which now serves as an active playhouse and theatre.

Title: The Postman Rings Once in a While

...And today was the day.  Our mailpeople no longer walk a route and pick up their deliveries at a local dropbox.  No, our post office has given them each on of these cute little vans and they carry their day's deliveries in it.  They drive from one destination to the next, choosing to walk maybe a block or two, before they jump in and  drive off to the next area.  Since my neighbour's Tesla was no longer sitting in his driveway, this seemed the next best, albeit less classy, choice.

Title;  Puzzle Pieces

The cycle of freeze and thaw that has brought both rain and snow produced this situation.  The thicker pieces of ice which had formed in a puddle on top of the grass has broken up during a thaw.  Then they got caught in the thinner ice produced by next freeze resulting in this formation reminiscent of the cubist era.

Title: Vestiges of Winter

Here's hoping these 'vestiges' are winter's last and therefore a harbinger of spring.  It wasn't so long ago that this river was frozen over with ice.  Now, all that remains are these fringes of ice that cling tentatively to the shores of the riverbank.  Even though, as I write this, there is talk of a winter storm on it's way through...winter's last hurrah, which means this ice fringe's days are numbered and spring is in the air (and in my step, too).

Title: The Past is Present

Here are two items from my heritage.  The Bible, from my mother's side of the family, has been handed for generations to the oldest girl of the oldest girl in each generation.  It is full of lovely illustrations of biblical events, has brass bindings and brass clasps and weighs a fair bit. Most importantly, it has a family tree which can settle any question about who's related to whom and how.  The other item belonged to my father's mother.  It is a 'travelling' clock and that is it's case to the left of the picture. The clock fits in the case and has a glass front so the time can be told without taking the clock out, or to make the case more secure, there is a second hard panel that can be slid in in front of the glass to more effectively protect the clock in transit. It's spring, and the snow is melting.  There are puddles everywhere.  It was cloudy, overcast and then the clouds started to break-up.  I noticed the clouds galloping across this puddle in the parking lot, so I waited.  I didn't have to wait long before out popped the sun. Title A Winter's Day*

I suppose I could have done an urban landscape since I live in large city but I don't need much of an excuse to leave the city behind and go tramping through one of our many beautiful conservation areas.  I had to get off the beaten path to find any open spaces with any hint of a modulating landscape.  This fence stood out against a very bland background and an extra grey day.  It was shot in colour, believe it or not.

When one's own hands are the only hands available, one casts about for a different meaning of hands.  In addition, most of the clocks in my house are digital now, so when I was out shopping with a friend (whom I was considering asking to let me photograph her hands) I came across a shelf o clocks in household store.  The light went on and voila, here's the result. Title:  At the Hockey Rink

I was despairing of seeing another photog given the fact that this is winter and the weather isn't conducive to most photogs being out and about.  Then the call came in....can you come to your nephew's playoff game?  Well of course I would come.  At the last minute, I decided to take my point'n'shoot just in case there was a zealous parent or two recording for posterity the 'amazing feats' of their offspring. I was barely in the door to the arena when this fellow came in full view.  I followed him as he set up and starting snapping.  I surreptitiously stole this shot of the photographer at the hockey rink.

It was a challenge this past week to coordinate my schedule with the sun's in order to find good shadows.  It finally happened on Saturday where I was out with my camera and the sun broke through the cloud, and so I snapped.  I'm not saying these are good shadows but I do find their simplicity appealing.

Week 7:  Abstract
Title:  Tea Hee

There's clue in the title as to what this is.  Other than that, this object is a lovely deep blue, made of cast iron with beautiful soft lines and provides me with a daily afternoon respite of warming calm.

Week 6: Signs
A Mouse in the House

This could also be titled a "mouse muffin" but I don't want to trigger people's gag reflex. (Please forgive my warped sense of humour.)  I found this sign of his existence in a little used drawer in the second underused kitchen in my house.  The little fella is long gone (I've checked) but the snug and cosy fruits of his labour lives on... in this picture only.  This muffin tin has been relegated to the garbage.  I've evicted my unwanted tenant.

Week 6:  Rule of Thirds
River of Ice

The river had frozen over ...mostly but not completely.  Alternating freezes and thaws had created many interesting patterns in the ice but I loved the effect of what was probably the last thaw/freeze.  It looks like a trough has been sculpted out of the ice by the last of the water to freeze over, embellished by blowing snow crusting on the ice in these lovely flowing patterns.  Nature is so talented.

Week 5:  Eyes
Soulful Lola

Lola spent the weekend with me and my two dogs.  The two girls had a great time together playing tag around the dining room table and expanding the chase to include the hallway and livingroom.  When she was at rest, I often would look up from my task at hand to catch her looking at me with these big, soulful, limpid eyes that I thought I might drown in.  I leave it up to you to interpret that look for yourself.   #weeklyphotoproject2013  +Weekly Photo Project 2013 curated by +Andrew Willard +Iain Harley and +Tiina Niskanen

The Roy Pepper Family

The name of the photo is a clue to the colours that would you would see were this picture in colour.  I always love the look of these peppers in the grocery store.  They are bright and cheerful and have a lovely shape.  It was my luck that I just happened to have some fresh ones in my fridge, as yet uneaten.

Week 4: Up
Look Up!  Look Out!

It was a bitterly cold day (-25 --20 C.), but a slightly overcast bright.  I was checking out a new off-leash park on the lakefront with my ever - present pooches .  I looked up and thought, "oh boy.  here comes the snow they threatened".  Then took the shot before my fingertips could become any more numb. #weeklyphotoproject2013  +Weekly Photo Project 2013 curated by +Andrew Willard +Iain Harley and +Tiina Niskanen

Week 4: Camera
The Leica

This camera belonged to my father.  He acquired it during WWII, as the story goes, for a pack of cigarettes. My father didn't smoke but he had a habit of keeping a pack with him to be able to offer to a cigarette to those who did, so the story is very credible. He used this camera a lot until the viewfinder got so clouded that it was impossible to see the subject clearly through it.  My personal camera is shown in week 2' picture of my self-portrait.  #p52bw13  +Project 52 B&W curated bt +Tisha Craw +Gene Bowker and +David Bowden

Week 1: The New Year
The Resolution

The park was full of activity this year but most, like me, were just out for a stroll in the fresh air to admire the winter scenes.  However,  I did also notice an increase in a certain type of activity - namely, running, jogging, even bicycling.  But this fellow I am certain had made a New Year's Resolution to improve his fitness level, because here he was doing push-ups on the picnic table.  Pretty serious, I'd say.  I wish him luck. #weeklyphotoproject2013 +Weekly Photo Project 2013  curated by by +Andrew Willard , +Iain Harley and +Tiina Niskanen

Week 3: Frozen
Freezing

This picture depicts a scene part of which is already frozen and part of which is in the act of becoming frozen.  The snow left, the temperatures dropped and now the snow has returned.  So it goes in the freeze-thaw-freeze cycle of winter.   #p52bw13  +Project 52 B&W   curated by +Tisha Craw +Gene Bowker and +David Bowden

Week 2:  Self Portrait
A Nose for Photography

Some photographers, maybe most, have an eye for cameraworks.  Then there are others, like me, who have a nose for it. Here is a self-portrait of the artist (if I may be so bold) at work, showing her being at one with the tools of her trade. A difficult subject to shoot but there it is.  #p52bw13 +Project 52 B&W   Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Gene Bowker, and +David Bowden

Ice Cap
I thought it was fitting to 'cap' off this project, and the year, with a little bit of colour as well as a depiction of winter and its effect on common plant life.  This sumach flower is showing a good sense of fashion jauntily wearing this cap of snow.  I thought it brought it all nicely together.  Thus ends an incredible photographic journey for the year 2012.  I learned a lot and hope to carry the lessons forward with me into the oncoming years.  I wish to thank the curators, +Takahiro Yamamoto and +Jeff Matsuya  of this project for throwing out the challenge to us all and my good friend +Ellie Kennard who got me involved in the project. May 2013 bring you all creative and artistic growth.  +Creative 366 Project #creative366project

Snow-lined Trees
Another reflection in a pool of water, but I liked this one because I thought the trees seemed even prettier for being caught in water's reflection.  They somehow were both sharper and softer in the water and were nicely framed by the banks of snow.  #creative366project +Creative 366 Project

All your Geese in a Row
There was a time when the Canada geese used to migrate south to warmer climes, but the like the weather patterns (or maybe cause of the weather patterns), times have changed.  And now these birds stick around Toronto no matter how severe the winter is.  This pic is showing about one third of the number of these birds that are all in a row lining the side of the riverbank, going nowhere fast but showing a remarkable sense of order.  #creative366project +Creative 366 Project

Winter Tufts
Even though the snows have come, there are still reminders of what was there before.  With the snow, everything takes on a fresh and softer aspect.  Here had been a field of tall grasses but now just the tufts remain poking bravely through the cold crust.  I love the contrast they offer in both colour and texture, these winter tufts.  #creative366project +Creative 366 Project

Transformed Overnight
What a difference a few hours can make!  Yesterday, this river was black and dreary and its banks muddy brown.  Then the storm came, blanketing all that dirt in a soft white cover and developing a hard icy shell over the water.  All surfaces became reflective, throwing back the sun's rays and adding sparkles. Long graceful shadows creep across the shiny surfaces. Overnight, my local world became a winter wonderland. #creative366project +Creative 366 Project

The Story
At a family gathering, I love how the older cousins step in to take care of the younger ones.  Amidst all the excitement and the mayhem, this older cousin picked up a book along with the youngest cousin and they indulged in a quiet moment together.  Eventually, some of the younger ones who are just learning to read wandered over and sat down to listen.  The adults were all grateful and impressed with the story and the storyteller. #creative366project +Creative 366 Project

Sculpture by Beaver
Off to a park outside of the city for a mid-afternoon walk and came across the prolific work of a Canadian beaver.  He was living up to his reputation of being 'busy'.  Signs of his industry were everywhere - some were faits accomplis and others, like this grouping, were works in progress. Some logs were felled and waiting to be incorporated into his dam.  I was impressed with the size of the trees he would tackle.  No tree to big to be sculpted and/or used to build a house. #creative366project +Creative 366 Project
