#MEG
@Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging.
A picture of a model of the first MEG system, of the first MEG measurement ever, an ECG, and of the first MEG measurement of brain activity, alpha rhythm.
I find it personally amusing that these "firsts" are actually what often decreases the power of our analyses and gets thrown away through either ICA (ECG) or averaging (ECG - unless you are very unlucky - and stimulus-unrelated alpha).

We are surrounded by largely different sound-producing "objects": a thunder rumbling, a baby crying, a fly buzzing. How do brains represent them? In this study, we show that rather fine-grained spatial variations in cortical activity contain a great deal of information about naturalistic sounds. Spatial activity patterns not only contain information about low-level sound properties (e.g., loudness), but appear to go beyond low-level analyses by representing abstractly whether sound-producing objects are living, or involve the activity of a human agent.

Mathematical Model of the Brain Developed
Taking complex systems such as the Internet and social networks as examples, a group of experts at the University of Cambridge was able to create a mathematical model of the brain. Though simple, their tool provides a surprisingly complete statistical account of how different regions interact.

It began with a frustrated blogpost by a distinguished mathematician. Tim Gowers and his colleagues had been grumbling among themselves for several years about the rising costs of academic journals.
They, like many other academics, were upset that the work produced by their peers, and funded largely by taxpayers, sat behind the paywalls of private publishing houses that charged UK universities hundreds of millions of pounds a year for the privilege of access.
There had been talk last year that a major scientific body might come out in public to highlight the problem and rally scientists to speak out against the publishing companies, but nothing was happening fast.
So, in January this year, Gowers wrote an article on his blog declaring that he would henceforth decline to submit to or review papers for any academic journal published by Elsevier, the largest publisher of... more »

Interactive 3D model of the human brain
The Brain Surface and Tractography Viewer was developed by Dan Ginsburg and +Rudolph Pienaar. The different colours represent the different directions of the neural tracks. Inferior/superior are blue, lateral/medial are red, and anterior/posterior are green.
Take a look: goo.gl/dx6qI - (requires Google Chrome)
The imagery is not as detailed as the static pictures posted by +Owen Phillips earlier this week. But it's nice to be able to interact with it, to rotate and explore the inner connectivity of the brain. Note, this requires a WebGL enabled browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

Too good to be true: Publication bias in two prominent studies from experimental psychology
A nice paper by Bloesch et al.: Publication bias is observed when the rate of null hypothesis rejections in a set of studies exceeds what expected based on a power analysis. Might this be a good metric to measure the scientific soundness of a scientist, or of a scientific journal?
