Adding sounds to the Google Effects app in Hangouts
Thanks to the Google Effects app, people have added reindeer antlers, and pirate hats, and moustaches to their live video feeds in Hangouts :-) Today we're updating the app with a new source of entertainment: sound effects.
Now you can cue the applause when someone's being awesome, gong them when their time's up, or play a laugh track when you're feeling funny. There's a dozen different sound effects to choose from, so hang out and have some fun!
Developers can also include sound effects in their own hangout apps with v1.2 of the Hangouts API (http://goo.gl/3WBo7).

You don't need to work in cancer medicine to help think about these issues and how to best overcome them.
Here are the challenges we face in treating cancer, as I see them:
1. Resistance to treatment (initial and acquired)
2. Need for personalized treatment (for the general public, and duh we need to try it earlier in treatment...waiting until stage IV is late late late)
3. Intratumor and intertumor heterogeneity
4. Lack of development of cancer stem cell research...and therefore lack of cancer stem cell work in the clinical setting)
5. Insurance coverage (sigh)

Super Science Circle - August 2012 Edition
It's time again for the latest edition of my Super Science Circle. If your stream is stale, import this shared circle and never want for knowledge again. And if anyone ever tells you Google+ is a ghost town, point them at this circle and demand they import it.

A friend of mine that had a huge impact on my life died this last Sunday. God please bless his soul.
He loved good conversation with interesting people, he loved all things beautiful (especially women, heh), he was a peaceful person. He loved music (kind of a music snob :) ) and he loved his momma. <3
I am glad to have known him and wish I could have had more time with him. There are things I wish I'd done differently.
So hey Matt, I want you to hear me when I say this to you for the millionth time: Sup daddy. ;)

Helping a Cagemate in Need
Calling altruistic behavior "empathy" doesn't make this a new idea.
Also, yes rats are social animals so the reward to freeing a trapped cagemate is that the rescuer gets to interact with the freed rat. Duh.

Speaking of Mexican artists, this is my great Aunt Tillie.
I last ran into her just before Christmas shopping at Marshall's. She was hanging out with a friend and looking for cute shoes/Christmas presents. It was random to see her there, but I'm glad I did!

Anyone on G+ doing genetics in their spare time? I guess this is no different than people spending hours on OpenMap or other community efforts that they find fun and rewarding. It's great to see genetics fall into this category, at least for some people.
