Can scientists appreciate beauty? Over 30 years ago, physicist Richard Feynman claimed that a scientist can see more beauty in a flower than an artist. Since then, science and art have combined to bring the meaning of his words to life.

Since Feynman was interviewed in 1981, the field of digital photomicrography has flourished. The "beauty at smaller dimensions" that Feynman spoke about has now been illuminated by high magnification images which enhance both scientific understanding and are often works of art in themselves. Such images and techniques have provided a rich source of inspiration for artists. Sanders says: "I have always loved the minutiae of things. Macro photography has inspired my work."

Pictures by Rosie Sanders, an artist with a particular interest in flowers.

Maze Dweller

A goby fish peeks out of the coral it lives in. Goby fish are good housekeepers--they may remove algae from the coral that would otherwise smother it, undergraduate Chhaya Werner explained. Werner took this photo while doing field work in Panama. (Chhaya Werner '14, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology)

Gobies sometimes form symbiotic relationships with other species, such as with burrowing shrimps. The shrimp maintains a burrow in the sand in which both the shrimp and the goby live. The shrimp has poor eyesight compared to the goby, but if it sees or feels the goby suddenly swim into the burrow, it will follow. The goby and shrimp keep in contact with each other, the shrimp using its antennae, and the goby flicking the shrimp with its tail when alarmed. These gobies are thus sometimes known as watchmen or prawn gobies. Each party gains from this... more »

Wind Funnel

Please note, the company claims are unverified, so I am treating this as a design concept

SheerWind Inc. of Chaska, Minnesota is claiming in a press release that its newly developed funnel-based wind turbine system is capable of producing 600 percent more power than conventional wind turbines. The new design uses funnels to channel wind to a ground-based turbine.

The idea behind the INVELOX system is to capture wind using wide mouthed funnels and channel it via ducts to a turbine sitting at ground level. The wind picks up speed as it is concentrated through a series of nozzle and pipes before it is delivered to a turbine, which produces electricity. SheerWind claims in its announcement that the system is capable of producing electricity with wind speeds as low as 1mph. As an example, they say that tests have demonstrated that the system operating in... more »

Neanderthal cousins may be Assimilated in us

Neanderthals were humans who went extinct between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago. Though there is some debate about who these people were, there is no question that there are none left. Around 40,000 years ago, humans had spread in waves across most of the world, from Africa to Europe, Asia, and even Australia. But these humans were not all perfectly alike. When some groups of H. sapiens poured out of Africa, they walked north, then west. In this thickly forested land, they came face-to-face with other humans, stockier and lighter skinned than themselves, who had been living for thousands of years in the cold wilds of Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. Today we call these humans Neanderthals.

A few decades ago, most scientists would have answered that it was a nightmare, a extinction of a people, a holocaust. Today, however, there is a... more »

Using Cornstarch to mine Gold

_ Northwestern University scientists have struck gold in the laboratory. They have discovered an inexpensive and environmentally benign method that uses simple cornstarch—instead of cyanide—to isolate gold from raw materials in a selective manner. _

This green method extracts gold from crude sources and leaves behind other metals that are often found mixed together with the crude gold. The new process also can be used to extract gold from consumer electronic waste.

Current methods for gold recovery involve the use of highly poisonous cyanides, often leading to contamination of the environment. Nearly all gold-mining companies use this toxic gold leaching process to sequester the precious metal.

He found that it was alpha-cyclodextrin, a cyclic starch fragment composed of six glucose units, that isolates gold best ofall... more »

Saturn's egg moon Methone is made of fluff

Out among Saturn's menagerie of moons, a shiny white egg rests in a nest of ice crystals. Named Methone, this small, oval moon was seen in close-up for the first time last year by NASA's Cassini spacecraft. Methone is utterly unlike the other small balls of ice and rock that dot the solar system, which are deeply scarred by impacts. Instead it is smooth, with not a hill or pockmark in sight. Now astronomers may have a clue as to why: Methone is made of lightweight fluff.

In fact, this 5-kilometre-wide moon is one of a clutch of space eggs, all orbiting Saturn in the same region between the larger moons Mimas and Enceladus. None of its siblings have been imaged as closely as Methone, but from a distance two – Pallene and Aegaeon – appear to be fairly smooth as well.

Material at Methone's surface could beeve... more »

Birds and the feather did not evolve together

There were hints of a revolution 150 years ago when part-dinosaur, part-bird archaeopteryx was discovered. Recently, discoveries in China have pulled back the curtain to reveal a varied cast of feathered dinosaurs, and we've found it wasn't just the direct ancestors of birds that were sporting down coats.

These discoveries have made the question of evolutionary origins even more interesting. At one point, you could have wondered whether feathers—which are basically made of the same stuff as scales— arose directly to aid flight or had been co-opted for the purpose from some other function. The prevalence of feathers and feather-like structures in flightless organisms points to the latter. So when did they first appear, and what were these other functions?

So when did feathers first evolve? We still don’t know, but f... more »

Amazing Sea Butterflies

The chemistry of the ocean is changing. Most climate change discussion focuses on the warmth of the air, but around one-quarter of the carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere dissolves into the ocean. Dissolved carbon dioxide makes seawater more acidic—a process called ocean acidification—and its effects have already been observed: the shells of sea butterflies, also known as pteropods, have begun dissolving in the Antarctic.

Tiny sea butterflies are related to snails, but use their muscular foot to swim in the water instead of creep along a surface. Many species have thin, hard shells made of calcium carbonate that are especially sensitive to changes in the ocean’s acidity. Their sensitivity and cosmopolitan nature make them an alluring study group for scientists who want to better understand how acidification will affect ocean organisms. Butsome ... more »

Rubens' tube

A Steampunk science experiment

A Rubens' tube, also known as a standing wave flame tube, or simply flame tube, is an antique physics apparatus for demonstrating acoustic standing waves in a tube. Invented by German physicist Heinrich Rubens in 1905, it graphically shows the relationship between sound waves and sound pressure, like a primitive oscilloscope.

A tube is perforated with a row of evenly-spaced, evenly-sized holes at the top, and covered with a flexible membrane at both ends. Gas is pumped into the tube, and speakers are put at either end. When the gas is lit (along the holes at the top) there should be an even row of little jets of flame. Their height depends on the size of the holes and the pressure of the gas from within the tube. When the speakers start pouring out sound, the flames should arrange themselves into standing... more »

Blueprints of Flowers

The worlds of architecture and scientific illustration collided when Macoto Murayama was studying at Miyagi University in Japan. In a project he calls “Inorganic flora,” the 29-year-old Japanese artist diagrams flowers. He buys his specimens—sweetpeas (Lathyrus odoratus L. , Asiatic dayflowers (Commelina communis L.) and sulfur cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus Cav.), to name a few—from flower stands or collects them from the roadside.

Murayama carefully dissects each flower, removing its petals, anther, stigma and ovaries with a scalpel. He studies the separate parts of the flower under a magnifying glass and then sketches and photographs them.

Using 3D computer graphics software, the artist then creates models of the full blossom as well as of the stigma, sepals and other parts of the bloom. He cleans up his composition in Photoshop and addsmeasureme... more »

Story of Dog

Evolution shaped genes in humans and dogs that correspond to diet, behavior, and disease, according to a new study.

The bond between dogs and humans is ancient and enduring. Dogs snuggle up to us at night, gambol by our side during daily walks, and flop adoringly at our feet when we crash on our couches. But new research shows that the connection runs deeper than you might think. It is embedded in our genes.

Researchers from the University of Chicago and several international institutions found that several groups of genes in humans and dogs—including those related to diet and digestion, neurological processes, and disease—have been evolving in parallel for thousands of years.

For example, living in crowded conditions with humans may have conferred an advantage on less aggressive dogs, leading to more submissive canines andeve... more »

Wind-Current hybrid turbine

We may be closer to harnessing the power of the sea and air. The world's first hybrid wind-current power generation system will be installed off the coast of Japan later this year. The Savonius Keel & Wind Turbine Darrieus (SKWID) power generation system being developed by Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company (MODEC) is a floating system that shares a vertical floating axis. On the company's website, MODEC says the concept will generate double or more power from the same sea surface area as a conventional wind turbine.

The wind turbine will be 47 meters above sea level and the tidal turbine will have a diameter of 15 meters. The two sections will be connected by a power generator. The turbine will be tested in the fall. Once operational, the turbine could generate enough energy to power about 300 households, the news agency... more »

GROVER

Unlike its famous cousin Curiosity, unheralded GROVER, the NASA rover takes on Greenland ice sheet.

Like its cousin Curiosity, currently busy exploring Mars this NASA rover is exploring a cold and inhospitable land. It hasn't had to travel so far to get there, though. The Goddard Remotely Operated Vehicle for Exploration and Research, or GROVER, is trundling across Greenland to measure changes in the ice sheet with ground-penetrating radar. This should help researchers to better understand the effects of climate change.

The tank-like GROVER prototype stands six feet tall, including its solar panels. It weighs about 800 pounds and traverses the ice on two repurposed snowmobile tracks. The robot is powered entirely by solar energy, so it can operate in pristine polar environments without adding to air pollution. The panels are mounted... more »

3D Printed Moon base

The European Space Agency (ESA) is looking to build a lunar base with 3D printing using local materials on the moon. The 3D structures are built layer-by-layer. The lunar material would be combined with magnesium oxide, which turns it into a "paper" to be printed with. Then, for the "ink," a binding salt is added to transform the material into a solid. The architects are trying to create a structure that can handle the harsh weather and environment that the moon can have. “3D printing offers a potential means of facilitating lunar settlement with reduced logistics from Earth,” said Scott Hovland of ESA’s human spaceflight team.

The Semaphore Frog

The Panamanian golden frog communicates with other frogs by semaphore in the form of gentle hand waves. It has evolved the mechanism to signal to rivals and mates above the noise of mountain streams. Shortly after filming for the BBC One series Life In Cold Blood, the frogs had to be rescued from the wild, due to the threat of chytrid fungus. Hilary Jeffkins, senior producer of Life In Cold Blood, said the semaphoring behaviour of the Panamanian golden frog was very unusual. "Normally, frogs would croak to get their message across but it's too noisy," she said. "An extra mechanism they've evolved is to wave to each other."

The method spray-coats a photovoltaic active layer by an air based process—similar to spraying regular paint from a can—to develop a cheaper technique which can be mass produced.

Plasma Device Could Revolutionize Energy Generation and Storage

Scientists at the University of Missouri have devised a new way to create and control plasma that could transform American energy generation and storage. Randy Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering, and his team developed a device that launches a ring of plasma at distances of up to two feet. Although the plasma reaches a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, it doesn’t emit radiation.

"Launching plasma in open air is the 'Holy Grail' in the field of physics," said Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the University of Missouri's College of Engineering. Starburst Jewel

Like a July 4 fireworks display, a young, glittering collection of stars looks like an aerial burst. The cluster is surrounded by clouds of interstellar gas and dust—the raw material for new star formation. The nebula, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina, contains a central cluster of huge, hot stars, called NGC 3603. This environment is not as peaceful as it looks. Ultraviolet radiation and violent stellar winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the gas and dust enveloping the cluster, providing an unobstructed view of the cluster.

Most of the stars in the cluster were born around the same time but differ in size, mass, temperature, and color. The course of a star's life is determined by its mass, so a cluster of a given age will contain stars in various stages of their lives, giving an opportunity for detailed analyses ofs... more »

To Sail beyond the Sunset

Two new sails are being looked at as possible variants to the solar sail...(the title is taken from a book by Robert A Heinlein).

New satellite sail is propelled by solar protons

A tiny new satellite is propelled by repulsion. ESTCube-1, which went into orbit recently, will put proton-powered electric solar sails to the test for the first time. It could pave the way for speedy trips through the solar system.  Regular solar sails have large, thin mirrors that reflect photons from the sun to push the spacecraft forward. The new electric sail, harnesses solar protons instead. Wires with a positive charge will extend from the craft and repel protons – also positively charged – to propel the tiny satellite.

Waimanu, the first penguin

(That we know of)

Waimanu is currently the oldest known penguin, and it is an ancient taxon indeed.  The rocks containing the Waimanu manneringi holotype skeleton are an astounding 61.6 million years old, far and away the oldest to produce penguin bones. To put this in perspective, these penguins lived just 4-5 million years after the mass extinction that killed off the dinosaurs (except for birds of course).

These early penguins inherited a world in which a reset button had been firmly pressed. It was warm, rather homogenous in temperature across most of the latitudinal gradient, and most importantly, nearly every major niche was hung generously with “help wanted” signs.

Waimanu is both amazingly penguin-like and amazingly primitive.  Waimanu manneringi was a healthy size, about halfway between a King Penguin and anEmpero... more »

How The CIA Tried To Turn A Cat Into A Cyborg Spy

Misadventure though it was, the agency's Operation Acoustic Kitty was a visionary idea 50 years ahead of its time.

n the 1960s, the Central Intelligence Agency recruited an unusual field agent: a cat. In an hour-long procedure, a veterinary surgeon transformed the furry feline into an elite spy, implanting a microphone in her ear canal and a small radio transmitter at the base of her skull, and weaving a thin wire antenna into her long gray-and-white fur. This was Operation Acoustic Kitty, a top-secret plan to turn a cat into a living, walking surveillance machine. The leaders of the project hoped that by training the feline to go sit near foreign officials, they could eavesdrop on private conversations.

The problem was that cats are not especially trainable—they don’t have the same deep-seated desire tople... more »

Heart on fire: Our galaxy's black hole is set to blow

The dark monster at the centre of the Milky Way has been a gentle giant – but that could change this year as it gets its first meal for centuries. The centre of our galaxy is a place of extremes. "It has the highest density of stars, the fastest-moving stars, the most concentrated reservoir of gas and the strongest magnetic fields in the galaxy," says Mark Morris, an astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles. And lurking at its very heart is the most enigmatic object of all: our galaxy's very own supermassive black hole.

Known as Sagittarius A* – SgrA* for short – this dark presence whirls stars around at speeds approaching 20 million kilometres per hour, and is as massive as 4 million suns. Yet it is a docile monster. It merely snacks on the tenuous interstellar gas, which emits afaint... more »

Physicists Show Time Flows Asymmetrically at the Electron Level

[This article originally appeared in print as "Time Asymmetry Finally Found."]

At the level of tiny particles, the laws of physics are symmetrical in time. A reaction that proceeds in one direction (such as particle A transforming into particle B) is just as likely to occur in the reverse direction (particle B transforming into A).

Yet experiments since the 1960s have suggested there should be exceptions to this rule — special cases of so-called “time-reversal violation.”  Scientists studied the collisions of electrons and positrons (the antimatter equivalent of electrons), which produce particles called B mesons. The experiment ran from 1999 to 2008, but scientists continue to make new findings — including this one — five years later by combing through the copious data.

Bats tongue

(Please let me know if you wish to be notified since I am moving most of my posts to notification circles).

Nectar-feeding bats have the highest metabolism among mammals, burning half their body fat every day, and therefore they must eat pretty much all the time. To sip their food efficiently, the bats have evolved special tongue-hairs that help them grab as much sweet nectar as they can with every lick. This finding, made possible with high-speed video, could lead to potential new designs for medical equipment.

Harper used a Phantom v10 high-speed camera to film the bats feeding at 500 frames per second. Slowed down, the video clearly shows the tongue fibers--they’re called papillae--stretching out perpendicular to the rest of the muscle. It happens whether or not the bats actually stick their tongues in the nectar, which shows it’s not a passiveres... more »

Amazing DNA

DNA: the 'smartest' molecule in existence?

DNA is structured like a ladder, opens and closes like a zip, codes data like Morse code and coils tightly

_DNA is the molecule that contains and passes on our genetic information. The publication of its structure on the 25th of April 1953 was vital to understanding how it achieves this task with such startling efficiency.
In fact, it's hard to think of another molecule that performs so many intelligent functions so effortlessly._

For such a huge molecule, DNA is very stable so if it's kept in cold, dry and dark conditions, it can last for a very, very long time. The Phoenix Project

DARPA has invented a lot of things, but it has also blown a lot of cash on dead-end projects. It’s the nature of its blue-sky mandate, of course, and must simply be accepted as the cost of doing its very, very awesome business. Still, the uncertainty associated with the military’s advanced research arm makes it difficult to get too excited about its plans early on, especially when there are nothing but concepts and pre-visualizations to back them up. Such has been the case for DARPA’s Project Phoenix, the would-be satellite scavenger program that for the past year has relied on animations to outline a plan, but avoided the topic of whether all stages of that plan were technologically possible. Now DARPA hopes to put at least some of these doubts to rest with a detailed breakdown of the real-world technologies that could make Project Phoenix a reality.

Beer Drones

Drones That Deliver Beer

This August, drones will drop payloads all over South Africa's OppiKoppi music festival, and there's a good chance no one will mind. Probably because the payload is beer.

Customers thirsty for beer will order beer with their phones, then someone will attach a parachute to a beer, load that beer into an octorotor, and the octorotor will fly overhead, release the beer, and the beer parachutes to the person who ordered it (hopefully). For test flights, the drone is remotely piloted, but the goal is to make the process far more autonomous, with drones flying themselves to coordinates on a GPS delivery grid.

Seahorse's Armor Gives Engineers Insight Into Robotics Design

The tail of a seahorse can be compressed to about half its size before permanent damage occurs, engineers at the University of California, San Diego, have found. The tail's exceptional flexibility is due to its structure, made up of bony, armored plates, which slide past each other. Researchers are hoping to use a similar structure to create a flexible robotic arm equipped with muscles made out of polymer, which could be used in medical devices, underwater exploration and unmanned bomb detection and detonation. UC San Diego engineers, led by materials science professors Joanna McKittrick and Marc Meyers, detailed their findings in the March 2013 issue of the journal Acta Biomaterialia.

McKittrick and Meyers had sought bioinsipiration by examining the armor of many other animals, including armadillo, alligators... more »

Astronauts to get helping hand from soccer ball shaped robots

FLOATING robots the size of soccer balls, with cellphones for brains, may soon be flying through space. The goal is to free up astronauts for more demanding jobs.

Tiny New Compound Camera Is Built Like a Bug’s Eye

Scientists have built a digital camera inspired by the compound eyes of insects like bees and flies. The camera’s hemispherical array of 180 microlenses gives it a 160 degree field of view and the ability to focus simultaneously on objects at different depths.

Human eyes, and virtually all cameras, use a single lens to focus light onto a light-sensitive tissue or material. Ultrasonic popping sounds from Trees

When drought hits, trees can suffer—a process that makes sounds. Now, scientists may have found the key to understanding these cries for help. In the lab, a team of French scientists has captured the ultrasonic noise made by bubbles forming inside water-stressed trees. Because trees also make noises that aren't related to drought impacts, scientists hadn't before been able to discern which sounds are most worrisome.

The noise comes from air bubbles rising up and then disappearing, a process called cavitation. As leaves on a tree collect carbon dioxide, they open their pores, leaving them vulnerable to losing water. To counteract this, trees collect water from the ground through their root system. The effort of trying to pull this moisture in from the ground creates the air bubbles. 'We can track the articulation of bubbles, andw... more »

This is how Science Works

This original announcement was really exciting

In 2009, NASA announced that it had found an Arsenic based life form - We could be witnessing the first signs of a "shadow biosphere" – a parallel form of life on Earth with a different biochemistry to all others. Bacteria that grow without phosphorus, one of the six chemical elements thought to be essential for life, have been isolated from California's Mono Lake. Instead of phosphorus, the bacteria substitute the deadly poison arsenic.

Science published some further findings - Following a series of critiques last May, Science has now published two papers, one by Rosie Redfield at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and another by Tobias Erb at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, debunking the claim that the Mono Lake bacterium can incorporate arsenic into itsD... more »

Preserved body of art

* Making art from stripped-down dead animals*

"SOMETIMES I go to pet shops and ask whether I can receive dead creatures."

And then 29-year-old Iori Tomita, from Yokohama, Japan, does incredible things to them. Taking up to a year, he gently rinses the animals with enzymes that break down soft tissue and protein. What is left is what he calls the transparent specimen: cartilage, which he dyes blue, and bone, dyed purple. "People are attracted by the beauty of creatures," he says. "Formalin specimens look grotesque."

Most of the material that Tomita uses in his art comes from fishermen – he used to be one until he was 25 – discarded dead crabs, squid, unsold deep-sea fish, unwanted tiddlers. And then there are the macabre packages from pet shops. There is a moral dimension to the work, too.He ... more »

A Sprinkling of Smart Dust

Thousands of tiny computers that scavenge power from their surroundings could one day be used to monitor your world. Such tiny computers, nicknamed smart dust; would work much like their larger cousins, says Prabal Dutta at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. They will have tiny CPUs that run programs on a skeleton operating system and be able to access equally small banks of RAM and flash memory. The plan is for such sensor-packed machines to be embedded in buildings and objects in their hundreds or even thousands, providing constant updates on the world around us.

But how do you charge something so small? "The vision of blanketing the world with smart sensors is very compelling," says Joshua Smith, head of the Sensor Systems Laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle. "But a lot of sensor networks researchers found... more »

Sarcosuchus, the Super Croc

From the blistering sands of the Sahara, a paleontologist pulled an incredible find: the nearly complete remains of Sarcosuchus imperator, one of the largest crocodilians to ever walk the Earth. As long as a city bus, and weighing in at about ten tons, “SuperCroc” lives up to its nickname.

Sarcosuchus imperator, or “flesh crocodile emperor,” lived roughly 110 million years ago, when rivers coursed over what is now sub-Saharan Africa. Sarcosuchus prowled the rivers’ banks, crushing prey in its massive jaws.

The first remains were discovered during several expeditions lead by the French paleontologist Albert-Félix de Lapparent, spanning from 1946 to 1959 in the Sahara Desert, they were fragments of the skull, vertebrae, teeth and scutes, subsequently in 1964 an almost complete skull was found in Niger by the French CEA but itwasn't... more »

Floralis Generica

The captivating Floralis Generica at the Plaza de las Naciones Unidas in Buenos Aires stands 20 meters high. The structure is an amazing piece of art, which has been crafted from 18 tons of aluminum and stainless steel and is controlled with the help of a hydraulic system as well as photocells. The nicely shaped petals that are 13 meter long have been attuned in a way that they open at 8 in the morning and close when dusk sets in. All this is controlled by the presence of a hydraulic system and photocells.

The presence of photocells in the design gives the sumptuous creation an eco friendly trait, which is worth noticing. These capture solar energy that provides energy for the functioning of the artful creation. The magnificent creation stands amidst a pond full of water and measures 40 meters in diameter when it blooms, leaving people mesmerized. The ultra... more »

When will wireless power reach the tipping point?

If you’re waiting to see when wireless power will hit the mass market, then you’re not alone. Delivering power wirelessly is perhaps one of the most hyped, long anticipated changes to the way we design and use products and machinery since the invention of electricity itself. But if you’ve been watching this space, you’ll know these solutions have been slow in coming to market and are anything but commonplace.

Why is that? What’s it going to take for this technology to hit the mainstream? Over the past two years we have witnessed first generation implementations of wireless power, mostly in the smartphone after-market. These come in the form of sleeves and charging pads but are rarely sighted amongst early adopters. Each claims to be supporting the best technology — the one that will lead the world in becomingcompletely u... more »

Wireless charging is the future

Every time you leave the house you take an armful of cables, chargers and just-in-case batteries to fuel a camera, smartphone, tablet and laptop to amuse you between a constant hunt for the next recharge, the next top-up. What a terrible way to travel.

Luckily, some clever innovations are afoot including wireless charging and power-efficient displays that could help us at last enter an era of ubiquitous computing.

One example which caught my eye...
The Qimini Charger won't instantly strike you as a compact electronic contraption, but just turn it onto its fine edge and you'll see that it measures a mere 9 millimeters in depth. This is the sort of device that you can easily slip into the pocket of a computer bag, a backpack or even into your coat.

The disk-like shape of the gadget contains a... more »

Rebooting Manufacturing

Smarter, safer robots could be the first step for expanding automation to new areas of production and help manufacturers gain a competitive edge against competition which uses low-cost labor.

Designed to work side by side with technicians and researchers without safety cages, the Baxter Research Robot is available for $22,000, which includes a service plan plus built in sensors such as cameras, force, sonar and rangefinder. The Research Robot’s extremely low price point will allow Baxter to become an integral part of robotics labs in higher education institutions and manufacturers’ research centers.

_ One robot methodically moves widget after widget onto a conveyor belt, the animated face on its LCD screen displaying an expression of quiet concentration. The task is mundane, but the robot is not: This is Baxter, the culmination of nearlyfiv... more »
