I asked +Jake Johnson for a photography assignment . Talk about everything falling apart. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.
The Boston Marathon, the fertilizer factory in Texas, and then my computer was infected with malware & 17 viruses.
I had much bigger plans for this picture, but I am letting it go ,as is.
Thanks everyone.

Just wanted to share this. I do not know these people, but I wanted to help. If you could help, I am sure that they would greatly appreciate it very much.
Thank you.

HELLO G+! I was hoping to call on my G+ friends and family for a little help for our daughter Miriam.

http://goo.gl/4ORlS

Many years ago we found out about a procedure that could help our now 8 year old blind/autistic daughter Miriam see for the first time in her life. (Some of you have come to know her on G+ as the little girl with a BIG hard to come by photo smile.) The revolutionary procedure has been had by many people we know with much success but it is still in testing and not available in our country (though they say soon) which means it is costly and not covered by insurance. We have friends with blind children who can now see and we so very much want that for our daughter. We raised about $1400 many years ago but we suffered a very emotional miscarriage and had to postpone fundraising.  We have now decided that it is time to start once again adding to the savings we have built up to go. We are not big on asking anyone for help and would give anything if we could afford it on our own but unfortunately we cannot. Obviously nobody plans for things like this, we were told she would never see and that was that. We now know it is possible and hope we can grant Miriam's wish  to be able to do so. For more information and/or to donate please visit Miriam's fund me page. There you will find a link about the procedure and to the KVUE news report done on Miriam. The procedure and living expenses have gone up since we last tried fundraising so we know this is going to be tough but we figure tough we can handle if it means our daughter getting to see the twinkling lights at Christmas or the faces of the people she loves.

We would love any support you can give, even if it is only a +up or a share.

From the bottom of my heart, ALL of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Here is the link for more info and/or to donate: http://goo.gl/4ORlS

Robin Hadder is an excellent photographer who is needing a little feed back. If she is not in your circles, you might also consider adding her. I am locking comments here. Please comment on her post. Thanks

Friends, fans and fellow photographers:

If you have a few minutes, I would very much appreciate your opinion/critique on something.  I usually don't put much effort into contests, but Digital Photo Pro is having a contest called "Emerging Pro Photographer of the Year," which is is people who have been pro less than 5 years. One of the categories is “Photojournalism and Sports."  I have gotten a lot of experience with sports photography in the last couple of years and have gotten a lot of encouragement from everyone.  I am told that what separates me from my peers is a photo-journalistic style that is uncommon to sports photography. I think this is a good time to try to win something like this one. Yet we are each our own worst critic!  To win a contest the photos have to reach out and grab judges that are looking through thousands of photos. They have to be well composed, technically well photographed and have emotional appeal. I have a personal "short list," but they may or not be the best choices, they might be good or  may be lacking, or there may be other ones that have more "universal appeal." If you are reading this and have the time, I would love your opinions and critique. (be horribly brutal if you wish. haha) If there are other shots that I have posted here or on my website at robinhadder.com that you think I should have considered instead, let me know. Win or lose, your comments may make me a better photographer. So thank you!

Here are a few I would consider and why:

- The selective focus pic of Sharon Day going over the hurdles. I personally think it is as good of a photo as that shot that was a Sports Illustrated centerfold, earlier this year, taken at the same angle. (Much respect goes to my colleague Bill Frakes though - he is one of the greatest sports photographers ever.) When people look at my website, that is almost always the first one that they tell me that they like. It has great color and her body position is perfect. You can clearly read "US Olympic Team Trials" on the first hurdle and "TEAMUSA.ORG" on the second, and the rest of the hurdles are perfectly blurred.  The sunglasses reflection is pretty darn cool as well.  http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I0000xnbE1iRUF4g

- Justin Gatlin and two other finishers at the end of the 100m. It has the blue sky and lines of clouds radiating out, right behind his head. (...rare sun for that meet of near constant rain!) He is pointing up and forward, like saying "On to London!" and he is just lined up with the time clock that says 9.79 seconds. (That is the same time he got at the Olympics which earned him a bronze. The other two guys were 4th and 5th.) Those 3 in the photo were 3/4 of the relay team that got a silver in the 4x100 at the Olympics, with a time that was a US record. No one else (that I have seen) has a photo that looks quite like this. Everyone was shooting and publishing that "tape break" kind of shot with a massive lens. They could not pull back their focus to get a shot like this, because of the type of lens they were using, nor could they switch cameras in time to catch this moment.  People told me they loved it. http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I0000KJ9SjBuMo7g

- Ashton Eaton in the starting blocks at the beginning of the 400m portion of the Olympic Trials decathlon, where he set a world record - in the pouring rain. It has the gun up, the lights and crowd and you can see the individual drops of rain.  The wide crop gives a good "sense of place." Its one that I laid in a puddle, with the end of my lens on the edge of lane 8 to capture.  From both Ashton and my photographer point of view, its that frozen moment, that seems to last forever before a race.  Neither of us were going to get a bit of good ole Oregon rain get in the way. http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I00002nXozQiJDOE

- The Boise Ironman 70.3 photo-finish http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I00008ANypSwUc0o Its amazing to have that long of a race and for them to be stride-for-stride about to hit the tape. In fact, it has never happened before in an Ironman Triathlon race. It was the first time they ever declared a tie. Their legs are in the same position and their foot is the same distance from the ground, with a nicely formed shadow under each of them on the "Ironman" labelled carpet. There is good crowd reaction behind them. I might have to do some more editing to make it a technically good looking photo. Its with my old camera and to get a high shutter speed it was grainy, yet light was glaring off the white objects in the background, like the tents. (its worth the editing effort) I am usually not a "tape break" kind of photographers, but this is one of the most dramatic ties ever.

- The aerial shot of Hayward Field with the huge crowd at the Olympic Trials. http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I0000PhsxShRckTg Who else in the contest would have anything like that? Some of my fellow photographers asked how I was so lucky or connected to get to go up in a plane with the Nike photographer. The truth is, I just was the only one who asked! (And he and I had become friends over the ten day event) But it just shows that it pays to ask!

- Kenyan, Silas Kiplagat holding up the glass trophy in Madison Square Garden after winning the mile. (over his much more famous rival Bernard Lagat) The lighting is simply gorgeous. Its a triumphant moment, but the low close-up angle that I got shows a very intimate view of the expression on his face.  Few people would know who the IAAF guy is, who just gave him the trophy, but its a smiling individual congratulations that is in contrast to what the viewer must imagine is the large audience in the stadium and on TV that is also cheering for him. It has layers of the microcosm and macrocosm. It is one of those photos that people tell me that I have a talent for seeing what others don't see and making them "feel like they were there."  http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I0000ZCkpijHEoKw

- Anna Coburn in the Steeplechase - http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Sports-Portfolio/G0000uyEQRnxjsmo/I0000y5RJGb7RkNA - She is so calm and in control of her race, while those following her are struggling in the pushing, shoving and splashing. The water is nicely frozen and the focus is really good. You can clearly see the "United States Olympic Team" logo on the barrier, so it gives a good sense of place. However, the USATF people really liked this "walking on water" photo of her, where she is going so fast that she left her own splash far behind her. http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/2012-US-Olympic-Trials-Eugene-Oregon/G0000RIDdq1Q4O4Q/I0000LuioGS13SwQ/C0000Z0Y9FvuzC5M

-  Pro Rodeo Bareback Rider http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Professional-Rodeo-Caldwell-Night-Rodeo-Idaho/G0000B.kUOlciHFE/I0000ipPzmFNG1D8/C0000Z0Y9FvuzC5M -  This was a "right place - right time" photo to fortunate enough to get to photograph from the press box and to have my finger on the trigger when the rider was at a good angle and distance in this perfect moment. The arch of man and horse is one continuous pleasing shape, as if they are connected. If anyone that sees this has ever watched bareback bronco riding they know how fast it is and how violent the movements look, yet the rider looks graceful. The physical strength and stresses can be seen in his face and his clenched teeth and reddened face. (all the blood was rushing to his head)  You can see the golden light of sunset on rider and horse, which is nice, but the ground and horse are all "earth tones." That makes his pink and blue clothing really stand out. That makes one remember, "Its all about the rider. This is a serious sport and it is seriously hard."

- Kristin Armstrong - Shattered Olympic Dream - http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Womens-Pro-Cycling-Exergy-Tour-Boise-ID/G0000SpOjRV15DYM/I0000r9FOAuasx1Y/C0000Z0Y9FvuzC5M This is the photo from the pro cycling "Exergy Tour" that was published in the Idaho Statesmen Newspaper.  In the last Olympic qualifying race, she wrecked and shattered her collarbone. As the team medic is looking her over, she is holding her broken collarbone. Her tears are not just from pain, they are because she thought she wasn't going to make the US Olympic Team. She was a fighter. After she wrecked, she got back up and kept riding. She was down for 10 seconds, but finished only 8 seconds behind the leader, in a short 2 mile time-trial race. She had surgery the next day and that evening was at the race to support her teammates and spoke in an interview for the broadcast. As it turns out, the committee let her be on the Olympic Team after all. She won the gold medal in London.  This photo is a quintessential "agony of defeat" shot.  This was such an emotionally painful moment that it was actually emotionally painful to take the photo. I thought about the thousands of miles of riding that she did to train for the Olympics and the all friends, family and fans that she felt she was letting down.  You can see that huge upwelling of feeling in her face. The medic's arms and blue surgical gloves are around her like a frame. I am not sure that the average viewer would understand who she is or what is happening in the photo. Its full context might be lost.

- Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Team Shot - http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/NFL-on-CBS-Thanksgiving-Day-Dallas-Cowboys-w-Cheerleaders-and-Enrique-Iglasias/G0000eMYKF3gsN0o/I000019vGxe0UdAk/C0000Z0Y9FvuzC5M - Everyone loves NFL Cheerleaders and they are the most famous of all time. There is even a reality TV show about the girls going through the tryout process to make the squad.  Anyone who has ever tried to take a "team photo" of any group knows how many takes it can take to get everyone looking "just right." (It took the Oakland Raiders cheerleaders about a half hour to take a team shot when I was there last year. hahaha) In this shot they all look beautiful and the afternoon light streaming through the high windows in Texas Stadium is just stunning. After I posted this photo, I know of a few people who liked this photo enough that they made this their desktop wallpaper on their computers.

- Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Halftime Show Dancing - http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/NFL-on-CBS-Thanksgiving-Day-Dallas-Cowboys-w-Cheerleaders-and-Enrique-Iglasias/G0000eMYKF3gsN0o/I0000pIgmLf8GDdM/C0000Z0Y9FvuzC5M  The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders have a very consistent "look" to them. They are consistently great dancers and consistently sexy.  The women may have different color hair  or style, be of any skin color or nationality, but in that blue and white starred uniform, you know exactly who they represent.  This shot was from the the big Thanksgiving Day game half-time show, where they performed with Enrique Iglasias and the rapper Pitt Bull. The depth of focus and lighting are technically good, but that is only important because of who the models are in the shot. You can only see the full view of one girl, but its a "line of sexiness," and they are the real stars of the show on a stage viewed by millions.

- Tim Tebow's Shining Moment - http://robinhadder.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/NFL-on-CBS-Denver-Broncos-Playoffs-vs-Steelers/G00001B1ra2zO6H4/I0000G5Ps5Djjj5A/C0000Z0Y9FvuzC5M - Here is the Denver Bronco's Tim Tebow being interviewed immediately after the exciting overtime NFL playoff win, in which he threw a game-winning touchdown pass at the very beginning of the overtime. Under the new "sudden death" overtime rules, it was an instant "game over" and the Broncos won. Among the throng of players, photographers and reporters that rushed the field after the game, this was a hard shot to get.  I managed to get a shot where they were both not lost in severe back-lighting. The depth of focus and twinkling stadium lights show the "big stage" where he is the star for that "shining moment."  The low angle is very intimate and makes you feel like you where there and close enough to really see what that moment meant to him.

Your critique and opinions will be appreciated. Thank you friends!___Robin Hadder is an excellent photographer who is needing a little feed back. If she is not in your circles, you might also consider adding her. I am locking comments here. Please comment on her post. Thanks

I had to do a little work on this one. After I got home I noticed that there was red reflected on this plane, from another plane nearby. I think Lightroom did a good clean up job.

Most of the planes were Military training planes. I don't know enough about them to tell any details about year they were made or the manufacture. But there were some awesome colors.

Private airshow near my house this morning. The owner was very nice and gave me permission to take pictures. Be warned, my stream will be filled with airplanes the next few days. :)

Saturday I left all of my responsibilities and unfinished projects behind and did some hiking. Here is something I found on the trail. A non poisonous snake. Not sure what its official name is, but it looks like what we call a chicken snake.

I have a new friend in the garden. I almost walked thru the web. I would have probably screamed like a girl if I had.
