How did a Ph.D. student (me!) living in the Midwest come to be hugged by a man who once led Iraq's nuclear program?
Here's a fascinating account that explains how our meeting could even be possible:

Found myself needing a bit of inspiration to keep me moving tonight. Re-reading Robert Krulwich's commencement speech to the 2011 Berkeley School of Journalism grads did the trick.
This is me...not waiting.

"In the end, the question is one of risk. No one has died from radioactive contamination as a result of the Fukushima meltdowns, at least not yet. And it may prove impossible to disentangle any extra cancers due to Fukushima's radiation from those that happen as a result of all the other carcinogenic factors a person is exposed to in the modern worldfrom diet to smoke."

Interesting. I'd not given much thought to the potential for emotional distress of those affected specifically by nuclear accidents. Tragic oversight by most, for sure.
I wonder if there have been studies of the emotional states of nuclear workers, in general, not in cases of catastrophe.
Anyone know?

Photos of recycling around the world. I suspect the real story is a little less about art and a lot more about abject poverty...but the photos are nice anyway.

Dear Google+ers:
I still find you active and worthwhile even if the Atlantic doesn't. Maybe they should associate with different circles. Like the science people. We've got this. :)
