Stars Like Rain. Here's a fun night sky image from the trip to the Alvord Desert the other week. I liked the idea of the stars reflecting in the wet playa surface, but the Milky Way wasn't quite in the right location. I shot that part of the sky separately and did some crafty blending work to get it to merge correctly with the sky and reflection. Certainly more of a conceptual piece than straight photography, but I'm more interested in visual concepts then reality anyway.

This was a real grab shot. I'd been doing some long exposure shots of this windmill and was just packing away when this couple walked over the brow of the hill and into shot. I quickly unscrewed my ND filter and recomposed but forgot I had it on bulb mode so had to flip the power off to cancel the shot, set to AV and try again. I just got this shot before they got too close to the Mill. Phew!

Apologies to those of you that may have seen this from my previous blog link but I'm all 'a bit smiley' over this image taken just after dawn yesterday and so am sharing it for #wildlifewednesday
I also have to tip my hat to +Ben Canales for this shot. Ben's an amazing astrophotographer and I read his post a day before this was taken to say how sometimes he struggled to get out of bed in the middle of the night to get images but was always glad he did once out. That was also true of me when my alarm went off at 4:30am knowing that I had to start work for 8am and do a 10 hour day in the office and I thought of Ben's comments then. I wrestled with whether it was worth getting up so early given that I would only have a couple of hours in the woods but went anyway-my mantra at such times being "if you don't go, you'll never know".

One of my favourite dog walks. This flood meadow makes for great insect macros, wildflowers, fox, kingfisher and barn owl shots. There is also this one viewpoint for landscape images. All it needs is a great sky. I was lucky to get a couple of grazing horses as well!

BEST VIEWED LARGE
This is Warwick Castle. They helpfully light the walls each evening which makes for nice twilight images but doesn't help for night shots. I had to use two ND grads to balance exposure to get the stars to come through. I stayed up till 1:00am to get this shot as the local Council turn off many of the street lights then so I hoped that the noise pollution was lessened. Luckily it was a still night so I got a nice reflection in the river.

A shot from earlier this year. This is Willow, my Collie/lab cross watching with interest as red grouse fly up vertically out of the heather in a courtship dance. A shot from yesterday evening. I had almost given up hope of a kingfisher landing on this branch-he flew past several times but never stopped. Then as the light really started to fade he took a break and gave me this shot.

I used a bird identification app with birdsongl MP3's to get this wren to come closer. He thought my phone was another wren in his territory and so challenged him to a singing competition. Whilst he did so I got this shot-taken just a few minutes after sunrise. Listening to him sing with the first rays of sun touching the treetops was the perfect start to the day :)

Up at 4:30am this morning to get a sunrise shot of Chesterton Windmill. I've shot the Mill many times at sunset but never dawn. And what a dawn it was! A few pink tinged clouds in an otherwise blue sky then BAM the sun rose over the trees and the world around me changed. It's amazing how the same place can change so much within 15 minutes of sunrise/set. This is the first of several Mill posts you'll have to endure over the next few days. This one was a 3 shot bracket merged in Photomatix 4 to ensure I retained some detail in that lovely Cotswold stone.

Moonrise over the Mill
The trouble with shooting this mill is that the sails are turned occasionally into the prevailing wind to prevent damage to the mechanism. This means sometimes you don't get the background sky you'd like. On this occasion behind me was the most amazing sunset but I wanted to be able to see all the sails not have them poking out from behind so chose this viewpoint. Luckily the moon rose at twilight and rimlit the clouds beneath.

Sunset at Durdle Dor.
The natural rock arch of Durdle Dor is the main attraction but sometimes it pays to turn around and see whats happening behind you. That was the case from this shot. I'd been shooting the setting sun falling on the rock arch then turned and noticed this beautiful post sunset glow.

Yay, we have flowers again!! I took my camera to the woods this morning and they are full of celandine, wild violet and wood anenomes. I should have enough images to keep me in #floralfriday posts until the bluebells arrive in a few weeks.

I thought I'd better get this one posted as the snowstorm of a few weeks ago is already a cold memory here. This pair were lucky. I read yesterday that in Northern Ireland 15,000 lambs died-suffocated under the heavy snows.

For want of sails
I took my sons for a bit of fresh air this afternoon. There was a lot of it about with a strong wind racing clouds across the sky. Chesterton Windmill is a 5 minute drive from me and I've shot it so many times but this is a new angle for me and one I'll explore again soon.

We had a short family break in the Thetford Forest this week and I was lucky enough to see this muntjac hind and very young fawn. The image quality isn't marvelous as it was shortly before dark so this was taken at iso3200 and handheld but to be honest getting the photo was secondary to seeing this lovely and intimate sight
