PHP??? I would have thought javascript would have made more sense.It seems like Google is just reacting to requests from 4 years ago. The App Engine has mades some decisions that seem to be contradictory. At one end, they drastically increased their prices and sent a signal the GAE was an enterprise-focused platform. Now, they're releasing PHP so people can host blogs on it. Really? You want to compete with $5-6/month wordpress hosting solutions.

A lesson in shortcuts.
Long ago, as the design of the Unix file system was being worked out, the entries . and .. appeared, to make navigation easier. I'm not sure but I believe .. went in during the Version 2 rewrite, when the file system became hierarchical (it had a very different structure early on). When one typed ls, however, these files appeared, so either Ken or Dennis added a simple test to the program. It was in assembler then, but the code in question was equivalent to something like this:
if (name[0] == '.') continue;
This statement was a little shorter than what it should have been, which is
if (strcmp(name, ".") == 0 || strcmp(name, "..") == 0) continue;
but hey, it was easy.
Two things resulted.

Went to the Google TV hackathon this weekend. Wrote code for 36 consecutive hours. We won both the judges vote and the popular vote with an amazing application. Then +David Cao takes away our prizes even though we didn't break any rules. I love +Google, +Google TV and the developer relations team, but this is just plain wrong. Everyone on our team worked extremely hard on this app and they deserved to go to I/O this year, which was the prize that was taken away from us. (side note - I already have an I/O ticket, but my teammates don't)
How are we going to get more developers to attend these events if this is how things are run? Aren't we supposed to be supporting a team environment where everyone gets involved?

As the result I'm now forced to pretty much shutdown the site.

My GAE (Google App Engine) http://f8daily.com hosted site has increased 400-500% in pricing after google implemented a new pricing scheme.
This is an extortion of sort. We've spent so much time building around GAE expecting a similar pricing structure, or if there would be changes it would be in the order of 5-20% percent range. Not, 400-500% price increase!
How is this different than a bait and switch scheme? They baited lots of us with one pricing and now made such a switch.
This pricing is forcing me shut down my site!
I've spent over a year gradually building it and customizing it around GAE which make it not easy to relocate now. Google guaranteed a 2 year window if they chose to shutdown GAE, this price increase is a de facto shutdown and it's killing my site.

Lytro will fail and here is why:
1 - P&S camera market is under pressure from mobile camera.
2 - p&s cameras at similar price point, offer better ergonomic, more features, larger image, etc.
3 - consumer want simplicity, Lytro is cool, but not sure if provides simplicity.
4- Hard to share! Part of the explosion of digital photos is the ease of share via facebook, email, twitter, etc. Lytro's photos sharing process adds extra friction to the process.
5 - what problem is Lytro solving for consumers? Out of focus photos. Basically they want people to take photos that are good. Well... I think most bad photos from P&S cameras suffer more from bad lighting and camera shake blur than being out of focus. Lytro's form factor seem to add more camera shake than anything. Just try holding something in one hand, and try clicking the shutter button and... more »
