Arkansas: when you go from 64 in May to 82, I have no time to acclimate and my run time jumps up by 90s/mi.
Please stop.

G+ Thinkers & Creators - I don't do it often, but when I do share circles, it's 'cause I think the people in them are worth sharing with you all, because they make me think, or share things of beauty and originality, whether it be music, photography, food, history, cool articles, humor, etc.
Some of these are the usual suspects you've seen around the G+osphere already, some are probably new to you. But all of them post in my top streams of folks I interact with (or at least read) daily.
They also happen to be some of the NICEST people on here, that I've found. I know, because I've even met some of them in person! Enjoy ;)

I like this new Pope. I'm not even Catholic.
"The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace. If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: we need that so much. We must meet one another doing good. ‘But I don’t believe, Father, I am an atheist!’ But do good: we will meet one another there.”

Is the Star Trek Tricorder about to become a reality ?
#sciencesunday #startrek #futuretech #euromaestro
Scanadu is about to release this Star Trek tricorder like device called Scout. The company is based at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.
The device works simply by holding it up to your forehead for 10 seconds.
Simply place the Scanadu Scout™ on your forehead for 10 seconds and in a snap, your stats are displayed on your smartphone.
The device can then track and monitor your vital signs.
It can track temperature, ECG, heart rate, oximetry and stress.
Read more in the Wired article.

Amazon Announces Kindle Worlds - Legal FanFic Publications?
In it's attempts to conquer the entire publishing world, Amazon has now cut deals with Warner Brothers to enable authors to legally write and publish (and sell) fan fiction.
In part perhaps because of licensing costs the royalty rates are different. For works over 10,000 words you'll get 35% and for shorter works 5,000 to 10,000 you'll get 20%
Keep an eye on those rates there have been rumors that Amazon would like to deprecate the short stories so we could see something similar happening for the rest of KDP.

I so called this 2 years ago. SPORTS IS A BUBBLE, it was growing way too fast at the same time reverse diversificating, the big 4 sports (NASCAR, not Hockey) were consuming all the oxygen in room at an exponentially growing pace and was bound to burn itself out.
Humans are getting to intelligent to buy the fixed farce that is sports today, and sports has zero interest in (sports phrase) playing small ball by working the angles our grand fathers gravitated to sports to (Loyalty, Values, Role Models).
It makes me sad, but sports are about to implode, it makes me unsad because MAYBE we can back to when sports were awesome, when I would just as likely be watching barrel racing, horse jumping, sky slalom, track and field, or bowling with my father on a Saturday afternoon, as I would football or baseball.

11.4% of Tumblr's 200,000 most visited domains are adult; 16.6 percent of Tumblr traffic happens on adult blogs; and 22.37% of referral traffic from external sites comes from adult websites, according to a study by the SimilarGroup.
The real problem is that much of that adult material gets shared and reposted into oblivion--easy reblogging is one of Tumblr's greatest selling points and the fabric of many of its communities. But porn, unlike pretentious food ... is strictly regulated. By federal law, anyone who creates adult content must maintain a detailed database of records proving that everyone appearing in the project is above the age of 18 (a set of regulations commonly referred to as 2257 regulations). But the law doesn't just apply to people who shoot adult content (also referred to as "primary producers"), it also applies to people who upload and distribute adult... more »

Collaboration Circle
Earlier this month, I put forth the next big circle project that I was brewing; but I explained it very poorly. So, let me attempt this again.
You should all be familiar with my highly vetted circle, The Three Hundred (described here: http://goo.gl/kqE8h) in which I take great pride in declaring as being my creme de crop of Google Plus. However, it only stands to reason that other people have their own circles that they vette (based on their own criteria) and promote.
What would happen if we combined all of the vetted circles together into one super circle?
This is the result of the first few weeks of effort. I've taken several circle shares from people like +Euro Maestro +Dede Craig King +Armando Lioss +Cesare Riccardo +Mike Elgan +Brad Leclerc and +Kate Savage and combined the common people (present in three or more in... more »

Many, many people have shared this on my stream today, both on G+ and FB. Nevertheless, it deserves signal boost, and I'm going to pass it along. Good article for both readers and writers. Good article for both historians and non-historians. Good article for both people and female people. ;) :P
"I had been nurtured in the U.S. school system on a steady diet of the Great Men theory of history. History was full of Great Men. I had to take separate Women’s History courses just to learn about what women were doing while all the men were killing each other. It turned out many of them were governing countries and figuring out rather effective methods of birth control that had sweeping ramifications on the makeup of particular states, especially Greece and Rome."

What if a Tesla could fully recharge in minutes?
"Eesha Khare -- an 18 year old high-school student from Saratoga, California -- created an energy storage project that won her the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award of $50,000 at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair."
"Eesha developed a tiny supercapacitor that is small enough to fit inside a cellphone battery and charge it fully within 30 seconds. Besides just smartphones and tablets, this technology could also be applied to even higher capacity batteries like those found in automobiles."
What's the biggest hurdle for electric cars like the Tesla? Okay, fair enough, their price is pretty ridiculous. What's the other biggest hurdle? Charging speeds. The $60,000 (base model) version of the new Tesla sedan takes a whopping fifteen to twenty hours to fully charge, and with... more »

Oh My Gaaaaawd. I was just snacking and watching National Geographic, when they did a program on the Apache Gunship's manufacture. In just the 10 minutes I could watch, here's what I learned about this monster:
:> The fuselage is coated with a bullet resistant resin on the inside.
:> This is topped with a layer of Kevlar (5 times tougher than equivalent steel).
:> Then the fuel tanks are added inside. These look like moleskin water containers, made of a special rubber that self seals! Which means that if a bullet makes it through the fuselage armor, and breaks through this rubber, the rubber seals itself before the fuel can catch fire!
:> The engines each output 320bhp, and they are commonly used in tanks, ships and trains!
:> If one engine goes down, the other acts as backup, allowing the pilot to fly for 30 minutes home.
:> The apache... more »

Look, loveys, I understand the site of terrible storm damage looks simply awful. Powerful acts of nature tend to do that.
But can we (pretty, pretty, please) come up with a different descriptive phrase than "like a war zone"?
War zones tend to have burnt bomb craters and scattered shell casings and bodies that have evidence of being raped, stabbed, mutilated, shot, and affected by all other manner of human caused atrocities.
Damage from the ice storm that tore up my Dad's place in 2011 looked much more like damage from an ice storm than a 'war zone'. Trees were left twisted, torn, and shredded. Homes were bombarded with debris. Power lines were yanked free of their tethers.
Storm damage from Katrina looked much more like severe hurrican damage than a 'war zone'. It was soggy, debris-covered, drowned.
These places... more »

Biking as an Adult
An idea that I have been toying with for a few weeks now is picking up biking as a hobbyist (once a week) to add something to my cardio routine other than 1.5 - 3mi runs and 2-3mi rows. However, I haven't been on a bike since I was about eleven.
What do I need to know?
What do I need to buy?

People are indeed placing human waste in Portland’s recycling bins — in the form of baby diapers — but not because they are recycling nuts. They just want to get rid of it, but the city has made trash pickup less frequent:
“It started when the city went to every other week garbage pickup,” said Far West Fibers President Keith Ristau. “Prior to that you’d get a dirty diaper maybe once a month. Now we get 60 pounds per shift. It’s not pretty.”

"The question is do we use a carrot or a stick to change behavior?"
"Plastic shopping bags are an enormous problem for New York City," said Ron Gonen, the deputy commissioner of sanitation for recycling and wast reduction, noting that the city pays $10 million annually to send 100,000 tons of plastic bags that are tossed in the general trash to landfills in South Carolina, Ohio and Pennyslvania."
"All across the country, plastic bags are teh bane of recycling programs. When carelessly placed into recycling bins for general plastic -- which they often are -- the bags jam and damage expensive sorting machines, which cost huge amounts to repair."
"We have to get people to start carrying reusable bags," Mr Gonen said. "We're going to do what we can to start moving the needle."

One Today
Thirty Day Review
It should come as no surprise to many of you that Google's new social app, #OneToday has been an app that I've following closely since I learned about it in mid-April.
After about a month of use, I've come to a gradual realization. While don't donate to the daily project(s) every day, I've noticed that with the common occurrence of donating $1, donating has become less of an "event."
Previously, after my very intermittent donations to charities or individuals, I would ride the selfish endorphic high that followed for several hours and grant myself a "douchebag deficit" for a few days after.
Interesting side note: 'douchebag deficit' is actually a social phenomenon with people who donate, recycle, or drive hybrids.
However, as donating insignificant amounts of mo... more »

Unpaid Internships Indentured Servitude
In today's expensive collegiate climate, the most rewarding degrees (Technology, Business, etc) are the careers that often require years of experience and a degree to make it past Human Resources. So how to you get that experience?
Luck, military service, or internships. As a recent graduate, I am well aware of the seeming 'attractive' internships that college students are bombarded with on a routine basis. Companies surround universities like vultures offering unpaid opportunities for "real world" experience, paid internships for $8 - 11/hr, and full time employment for seniors at around $20,000/yr.
These were the offers that came across my e-mail on a weekly basis as an Information Technology graduate. The scandalous love affair between college administrators (who are praised for being &qu... more »

This Isn't the Onion
But then again, this isn't satire.
"According to the General Mills letter, if everyone in the US started eating healthfully, it would cost us $503 billion per year! That might affect our ability to pay CEOs like General Mills' Ken Powell annual compensations of more than $12 million."
"But revamping the food environment will also cost you money. The General Mills letter stated 'a shift by the average american to the IWG diet would conservatively increase the individual's annual food spending by $1,632.' Sure, we've heard talk about costs to the individual that arise from being obese. One 2010 paper from the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services estimated that the annual costs to an individual for being obese can be upwards of $8,000. We like to think of this as a smal... more »
